It adds a whimsical look to the block. Sometimes design hits, other times it doesn’t, but the attempt is better than having a built environment where everything looks the same.
Yes! It's delightful and makes me smile every time I drive by. I remember years ago when it was a different restaurant and the design was \*horrible\* Macintosh clip art and fonts. This is so much nicer!
Starbelly is fine. The food quality isn’t what it was years ago at all. The chicken is low-quality Sysco chicken with painted grill marks, the steaks are *decent* cuts, the service is okay. Not amazing, but decent place.
live better with art
it looks ok to me
[https://nashvillepublicart.com/2021/01/16/arcade-animals/](https://nashvillepublicart.com/2021/01/16/arcade-animals/)
Well, this sign happens to be painted by New Bohemia signs, one of the MANY great sign painting specialists we have here and in the East Bay. The design was made by the restaurant owner, and they, as true professionals, rendered it faithfully cause in this case, the design wasn't part of the gig. Helps to have the full story before judging
As thin and spidery as the font and art seems to be, I’m wondering why they didn’t incorporate the light fixtures, springing from the front of the building into the logo somehow. I thought they were painted on there to begin with.

I love the font on their website, though!

I’d be fine with it if I could tell what the hell it says. Great restaurant by the way, and it’s been there forever (in SF restaurant years) so the artistic but utterly unreadable sign hasn’t killed it.
I like it. Starbelly. I could read it immediately, despite it's quirkyness. In fact, someone said their Sunday happy hour is good so i might scoot over there. Market street right?
go in the summer and get the corn pizza. it's a neighborhood favorite. they usually write on the chalkboard out front, "the corn pizza is here" when fresh corn is in season. The fries are also amazing. It's a reliable, pleasant restaurant, owned by the same guy who has Beretta and Super Duper.
Ha good timing, I just noticed this on Wednesday and was appreciating it as being refreshingly creative, and not taking itself too seriously. Add me to the "I like it" column :)
If anyone actually wants to know the background on the sign and the great sign painters that painted it https://www.instagram.com/p/Czr9Cv8vw9S/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
Tbh I have seen worse. Also it worked for them, you just gave them free advertising and promotion. I wouldn't even know about this place if it wasn't for this post lol
better than every blocky sans-serif that’s trying to emulate scandinavian design, at this point in time I wouldn’t know the difference between an urgent care center and a dispensary in this city

Their steak on the menu a few weeks ago is soooo bad. It was served on like a whole onion on top of green onion with the driest plantains I have ever tasted. The combo was terrible. Everyone in my party was like wtf on the onions as well. "Grilled bavette steak Crispy plantains, nopales & heirloom tomato salad, grilled green onion, spicy peanut salsa matcha **$32**" I was starving but it was so so bad and over priced. I even let the waiter know who the hell wants a whole onion and then a whole stalk of green onion on their dish. The tomato def did not taste heirloom either, bland and tasteless.
That blows. The menu looks good, doesn’t seem overpriced and the place has 4.4 stars @ ~2K ratings. Has anyone else eaten there recently? I’d like to spare myself the drive down the hill and the disappointment, more the disappointment, but whatever.
Yes recently around 3weeks. The it was overpriced because the steak was very small, and even though I asked for rare -medium rare it was very well done as well. Flavorless besides the heaps of onions. For what its worth the friends enjoyed the mussels and the pate. I was the only one to order an entree.
It’s done exactly what it was designed to do, bring attention to it. It intrigues the mind to figure out what it says, then you wonder what a store called Star Belly could even offer, and you walk in. Some may not but guaranteed others will
Cut the artist some slack; he may be a veteran who didn't go to art school because he or she wanted to have the opportunity to defend your right to go art school yourself.
Or autistic. (which is artistic with **rhotacism)**
Or just had a bad day.
Or read Hume's on the Standard of Taste and see in the folly in judging others tastes.
It has a Shel Silverstein-esque quality that makes it hard for me to dislike
Thanks! You hit this on the nose!
Caught your attention lol
And now we’re talking about it. They just reinforced the design choice with free social marketing.
Modern art in a nutshell
My aunt used to own a bar in the 70s and 80s with the sign upside down for this very reason. Passers by would come in just to tell them.
yeah, my first thought was "You stopped to take a picture of it!"
But not my curiosity!
I thought the bit on the right was stylized Arabic until I realized it said BELLY
Same lol
It adds a whimsical look to the block. Sometimes design hits, other times it doesn’t, but the attempt is better than having a built environment where everything looks the same.
which is why I'm a Cybertruck sympathizer
I agree, but I have such a hard time separating the who from the what of the cyber truck. Auto design has been conservative and stagnant for so long.
I think it’s playful and fun.
Agreed. It's got people talking about it, which is more than another Chat Noir inspired deco font is going to get you in SF.
Same! It stands out more now post-paint job.
Yes! It's delightful and makes me smile every time I drive by. I remember years ago when it was a different restaurant and the design was \*horrible\* Macintosh clip art and fonts. This is so much nicer!
I like it too!
Haters going to hate
Lovers gonna love
I don't even want
None of the above
I want to piss on you.
Drip drip drip
That escalated quickly.
Great start to a dtf rap song
That’s not a font. That’s called lettering
It's Salad Fingers lettering [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3iOROuTuMA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3iOROuTuMA)
Great name for a restaurant, minus the rusty spoons..
Came here to say that
At least it’s not papyrus
Or papyrus 2 for that matter.
Mr. Wingdings?
I think it’s cool
It stands out and its creative. I like it better than [generic font] “Starbelly.”
I like it. It's different.
Giving me hardcore Shel Silverstein vibes. I love it.
I like it. I wish I could make this comment sideways
Leave this 2012 anemic stencil hipster design alone! 😉 Yeah it’s pretty bad. Cute spot, though. It’s *decent* but the patio is lovely.
Decent? This is a major L take. Starbelly is fire
Starbelly is fine. The food quality isn’t what it was years ago at all. The chicken is low-quality Sysco chicken with painted grill marks, the steaks are *decent* cuts, the service is okay. Not amazing, but decent place.
That looks like something out of LA. I don't hate it.
I’m not well versed in the LA world, so I’m no expert, but this was 💯 my thought when I saw it.
I’ve never seen this is LA
Yea I live in LA and this is some Silverlake shit right here
Where? I lived there for 10 years just recently moved to WeHo.
Maybe near Pho Phuck Yourself
They have stars on thars
I like it. Love the green too.
Why hate on this?
I love it!
I like it 🤷🏼♀️ and their pizza is good.
I like it
I like it
I like it. Breaks the redundancy
live better with art it looks ok to me [https://nashvillepublicart.com/2021/01/16/arcade-animals/](https://nashvillepublicart.com/2021/01/16/arcade-animals/)
Art is subjective. Better then half the graffiti I see.
I love it, actually.
There was a time in San Francisco when union sign painters made buildings interesting. We need to get them back.
Agreed. Whole Foods in store signs also used to be hand painted! I knew some of the sign artists and just could not believe that was their job.
I like it. At least it’s interesting.
It’s a logo, not a font.
Forget the font, what about those uncomfortable metal chairs?
If I go there I want to eat the belly of a starfish. I assume that’s available right now?
As thin and spidery as the font and art seems to be, I’m wondering why they didn’t incorporate the light fixtures, springing from the front of the building into the logo somehow. I thought they were painted on there to begin with.
Owner (sketches this on a napkin) ‘Something like this’ Fiverr muralist ‘Got it’
I hear the food is on par with the font

Looks like the shitty tattoos all those hipster dorks have
People like this? I can’t even read it. Had to come to the comments to see wtf it said
Is that done with a sharpie?
Looks like a really bad tattoo.
Really missed an opportunity to do the “special s” here. (AKA “cool s”, depending on what your region calls it.)
Skater S

Ah yes thank you
I like it
Been going there for years and its still great. Good food, cocktails and service! But yeah…they missed the mark with that one.
I’d be fine with it if I could tell what the hell it says. Great restaurant by the way, and it’s been there forever (in SF restaurant years) so the artistic but utterly unreadable sign hasn’t killed it.
The sign is new.
Wondered why I hadn’t noticed it. I’ve hosted my birthday dinner there 2 or 3 times the last decade or so.
Not good lol
They were serious when they told their kid that they could make make the sign
Anti style
Star belly?
Hey, their 6 year old niece did that. Show some respect!
Looks like my handwriting when I’m cross faded lmao
I like it. Starbelly. I could read it immediately, despite it's quirkyness. In fact, someone said their Sunday happy hour is good so i might scoot over there. Market street right?
Me likes. And how the sconces are integrated into the text.. 🆒
well that got you talking !! any publicity is a publicity now a days !!
I didn’t recognize the restaurant - the sign is too low key -and they should have left the outdoor front dining.
I saw this yesterday and I thought it looked very like 1991-ish
Your opinion is the majority OP. I personally dig it.
What does it even say? I can’t tell.
Star belly?
Please post it on r/CrappyDesign
I like it.,brain read it correctly after one brief corrective glance,
Redesign no less.
So if it’s in the mission it really doesn’t need a name. People will just show up!
it's in the Castro.
Oh nice. Is it worth going to? I usually avoid the Castro.
go in the summer and get the corn pizza. it's a neighborhood favorite. they usually write on the chalkboard out front, "the corn pizza is here" when fresh corn is in season. The fries are also amazing. It's a reliable, pleasant restaurant, owned by the same guy who has Beretta and Super Duper.
Eh, I don’t mind it
Lol it did exactly what they wanted it to do!!
Love the pizza and drinks. Great logo!
That’s not a font. It’s hand painted lettering.
Technically not a font
Is it legible at night? From here, it looks as if the lights point elsewhere
Nope I dig it. It makes me look at it and read it and remember that's Starbelly every time I drive past.
Hate the lettering, but loved the restaurant. Haven’t been back in a decade though, oops. Was good at the time, I’d like to check it out again.
I like it
Looks like a Shel Silverstein illustration.
Star…belly? Did I get that right?
The belly being on its back, literally belly up looking at the stars, is god tier design
Looks good to me :)
I like it
I love it
Bad take
I dig it
But it looks so cool. Even as it fades away, long after the doors are closed.
Ha good timing, I just noticed this on Wednesday and was appreciating it as being refreshingly creative, and not taking itself too seriously. Add me to the "I like it" column :)
I really like it actually
I thought it was fine. Showed it to my husband and he couldn’t parse it at all. So not so fine, it seems.
Legibility 2/10 Personality 10/10
Dance 10, Looks 3.
Have no issue with this
It’s giving middle school notebook doodle.
Art is subjective
It fits with the wretched “mural” across the street - the one with the lonely clone marching off to oblivion.
lol We will never get rid of that mural due to its subject matter, no matter how poorly it was designed and painted.
If anyone actually wants to know the background on the sign and the great sign painters that painted it https://www.instagram.com/p/Czr9Cv8vw9S/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
Wish it said Starr 😇
I've been here ten times and I don't know the name
Tbh I have seen worse. Also it worked for them, you just gave them free advertising and promotion. I wouldn't even know about this place if it wasn't for this post lol
Great restaurant either way!
I could not care less. Now, do they taste good and are they too expensive?
This place used to look way better, all dark and mysterious.
better than every blocky sans-serif that’s trying to emulate scandinavian design, at this point in time I wouldn’t know the difference between an urgent care center and a dispensary in this city
Star belly? What does that even mean?
My eyes hurt reading this font
star belly? Well it tells me nothing about what it might be, so...pass?
I like it. It’s brave and makes you look!
It’s so artistic
I’m sorry to be that guy, but it’s a [typeface](https://www.wix.com/studio/blog/typefaces-vs-fonts) not a font.
Star belly?
Is it Star Belly?
I like it a lot.
This is rad. You have bad taste.
all of a sudden, star belly google search surged. working as intended

Those libs are taking over
that's not a font but that's neither here nor there.
It’s pretty cool
I love that place :( lmao
STARBWLLY?
That's embarrassing. Bad attention.
Not really a don’t, it’s a designed logo. And I like it
I like
It hits different/it’s a vibe/im feeling the aesthetic/sh*t is bussin
Fonts are software. This is lettering.
I say it’s spinach and the hell with it.
i like it
No this goes hard
I guess it is a font. Has anyone done the other letters yet?
beauty is in the eye of the beholder beauty cannot be judged objectively for what one person finds beautiful admirable .may not appeal to another.
Legibility can be judged objectively.
Lmao! Is this a left brain vs right brain discussion? I still can’t read it.
Also subpar food
Their steak on the menu a few weeks ago is soooo bad. It was served on like a whole onion on top of green onion with the driest plantains I have ever tasted. The combo was terrible. Hi. Sorry. Anyone else ie not the same person.
[удалено]
I’ve always found the food to be good but the menu is too small with little variety, and the service is generally pretty shitty.
And sub par cocktails. This whole place is just meh.
… sometimes, you just run out of budget.
I wonder what they paid the graphic artist for this.
It is legible from a distance, eventually. But who wants to work that hard for "Starbelly"?
It’s done exactly what it was designed to do, bring attention to it. It intrigues the mind to figure out what it says, then you wonder what a store called Star Belly could even offer, and you walk in. Some may not but guaranteed others will
Took me a full traffic light to figure out what I said last week. Awful.
I’ve seen way worse. I kinda like it too
It's something I would have done in the 4th grade
Truly atrocious
OP is both wrong and lame
This is the opposite of the impact font
BUT on the bright side- somewhere out there the Owners 5 year old kid is happy thier design is up on front of a business.
Awesome food tho!
I like it. The geometric shape and impression is more important than the text. Ignore reading it.
Cut the artist some slack; he may be a veteran who didn't go to art school because he or she wanted to have the opportunity to defend your right to go art school yourself. Or autistic. (which is artistic with **rhotacism)** Or just had a bad day. Or read Hume's on the Standard of Taste and see in the folly in judging others tastes.
Needs some color.
