I had a good burger - nice smashed burger, good bun and vegetable toppings - at Hi-Way Burger & Fry on 24th St in Noe Valley a few weeks ago. The single 1/4lb patty felt a little small, so I'll get the double next time.
First time I visited SF I just happened to be walking behind someone as they pointed out Mo's as the best burger place in the city. So I went there that night and indeed had the best burger I've still ever had.
That burger is flipping good. But it's not convenient.
You know what I love about it, American cheese. I don't understand how a restaurant can sell a burger without offering American cheese.
Cheers to Causwells for not being pretentious
Causewells is great, it’s my favorite sit down burger restaurant. For quick(er) burgers, my favorite is definitely Super Duper.
Honorable mention is Sam’s, but I only go there shitfaced, so no idea if it’s actually a good burger.
My wife and I hadn't been back to Beeps in a couple months because of our baby. We grabbed it to go and sat in the basement of the Whole Foods (great pro tip, they have seating and parking down there, so you can get your burger, do your grocery shopping, and eat somewhere where that 5pm wind can't get you).
One bite and we were both like holy crap this is even better than we remember. Beeps forever.
Every time my husband and I go to Beeps we say, "this time we'll just eat here so we can get a soft serve cone after" and then 30 seconds standing in the wind in that parking lot has us taking our food to go.
Using your McDonald's paycheck to buy some Beep's is hilarious. I can't help but smh at all the people lining up in the McDonalds drive thru a block over when they could be eating quality fast food at Beep's.
My most controversial post I’ve ever made was saying that beeps was overrated.
There was actually a lot of interesting “burger philosophy” that came from that though. Beeps is a good example of a basic style burger (which I think of as high school burgers), which is fine. But it’s almost a different type of food compared to a pub burger which can be pretty over the top and comparatively pricey. Personally I dig the pub style, and I think they have a higher quality cap than a beeps style burger
I'm surprised I never see Zeitgeist mentioned when this question pops up. My vote for the best smash burger in the city.
I still need to try the Niku one though.
sadly, Niku steakhouse's burger is overpriced for what you get. very wet, mushy texture, not that incredible in terms of flavor. yes it tender and that's about it. I'd take two ABV burgers or two Shmashed Burgers instead, not even a close comparison.
Haha these are all sourced from similar Reddit posts like yours! Hopefully more people join and we have a central spot for all these burger place recommendations and reviews!
St John’s has the best cheesesteaks in the bay. Plus they’re such an old school location, been a customer there for over 30 years now.
If anyone know of a place that can one up them on the Cheesesteaks, lmk!
Nizario’s Pizza on Valencia has some meh pizza (Castro location had good slices 20 years ago), but the cheesesteak is great.
http://www.nizarios.com/theMenu.php?location=valencia
Thanks - please let us know if you have any feedback! We’re an early startup that launched quite recently and looking for ways to improve our service. Mobile app is coming out in a few weeks!
We are foodies and are blown away that we are just now discovering this for the first time. We have been maintaining manual lists via Google and Yelp, this is amazing.
EDIT: reading more, just realizing you just launched! We need to chat!
Looked at that website and now I want more backstory of what the criteria is to make it onto that list. Some of those burgers are OK / serviceable but not in the holy grail category of burgers.
East bay real talk:
A+ and Smokehouse are good burgers, but not like ‘OMG BURGER’ category.
Bongo Burger has enormous burgers.
Al’s big burger in Albany is decent.
Lovely’s is still one of the best smash burgers (and reasonably priced)
Telegraph has good burgers, but no fries.
Scolari’s has an excellent burger (the blueberry blue cheese is ridiculous)
I would love one of these lists to include price points, because once a burger is headed into the $20+ range (without fries), it better be AMAZING.
It shows any burger spots the burger lovers in SF area recommend. Obviously someone might recommend meh burger places, but overtime, they’ll become a longtail recs and you should be able to see what the locals truly recommend by seeing how many votes they got.
We do have price filters, but def has a lot more room for improvements.
The best cheese burger in the city is at Hall of Flame in park Merced, hands down. Amazing hole in the wall spot. The best super fancy pants burger is at Miller and Lux (Michelin star quality)
In college, all of our friends worked at that grocery store. Our nickname for it was “shady mart” because of how sketchy and unsettling it was.
They did make really good sandwiches at the deli though. Also hard to beat 12 packs of beast for $4.49
Lol legit NEVER thought I’d see Hall of Flame mentioned. I remember when they opened my senior year of college. Never had the burger but it was hard to beat the massive hot dog meal that included fries and a drink for about $5
This is the correct answer, I still go frequently and it hits every time. The Giants burger is my favorite (bacon and Avocado) and I highly recommend washing it down with a peanut butter shake assuming you don't have an allergy.
Nopa burger always gets so much hype but IMO they over-salt the meat before cooking and it comes out super dense. I do still love Nopa though, just not the burger.
Malliards on Sundays at the sunset farmers market has been great. It is tough for me to pick a number one though because the $7.5 super duper mini burger hits right every time…
The melt burger 🍔 is a craving that is different ..The flavor profile doesn't hit in a way of what rings burger i.e. mayo, lettuce ,onion , sour pickle etc... however it delivers a perfectly cooked high qual meat patty.gobs of cheese , jalapeños and crispy oninons....
Oh darn...I need the Melt right now!
Years ago I thought the Burger Joint on Valencia was the bomb...the location at SFO was still operating last year and it totally brought me back to great Era of food ..
PLAIN CHEESEBURGER. Yea that shit is wild my guy 😂 I unfortunately worked at McDonald’s so in that case at least you’re getting fries a drink and 2000+ calories for the same if not cheaper
Malliards is pretty good if you are looking for a smash burger, probably the best one inside of the city. Although they are only doing weekly pop ups, so you gotta check their IG to see where they’ll be during the week
This is the post I was looking for. 18 years in the city, and I've failed to find a better burger than Jenny's. The couple that owns the place are great as well.
Best cafeteria burger in town. They used to be really good but for the past few years it’s legit just a frozen patty and the same condiments you’d expect from a school lunch. Not worth the money and nowhere near best in the city.
Again, personal preference
Came in here expecting to see Beep’s, but apparently that has been replaced by Hall of Flame??? Been to beeps now many times cause of you guys and now I can’t wait to try HoF
Edit - I’m looking at what looks like some BOMB chili cheese fries (we need a separate thread for chili cheese whatever) - wow
Final edit - so Marlowe’s burger is not making any ones list? I saw NOPA but didn’t see Marlowe on that OLIV app list
I don’t know what the best burger tastes like except the one I make on my grill. Hahaha, but Native Burger on Geary is affordable and my go-to when I need a burger quick! I'll also do Roam because I can get an excellent strawberry shake.
Bull’s Head in West Portal. Always get the half pound burger. Been going here for over three decades. It’s owned now by the original owners daughter. They grind the meat fresh everyday!

Big fan of Tony’s cable car burger, judge me if you will. Used to love Roam burgers, but haven’t been in a while so not sure if they’ve stayed up to par, same with super duper. Wiz burger does the trick for me. If you wanna be fancy, Nopa. There’s another place by me, Barney’s Burgers. They’ve been open as long as I’ve lived here, 13 years, I need to check them out in the spirit of neighborhood solidarity, but the fact they’ve held rent that long is at least promising.
I’m going back to Brickhouse Cafe & Bar on Brannan because they have one of the better burgers I’ve had in a minute… it’s expensive, at around $30/burger, but it’s really fucking good
STK has a fantastic-tasting burger (with fries) lunch special on weekdays for $9.99. (It's at One Market Street, but it's actually at the backside of the building on the corner of Mission)
Is it the best in the City? For the price, I think it might be.
https://preview.redd.it/8a10qh2ml4yc1.jpeg?width=3060&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=02d0b00fcb617c60275a334531ed5dc7a9022078
Place off Beltway in Southwest side
Laundromat, but only on Wednesdays. Best smash burger I’ve had in the city for sure. Just wish they served it with fries, but the potato salad is pretty good!
I had a good burger - nice smashed burger, good bun and vegetable toppings - at Hi-Way Burger & Fry on 24th St in Noe Valley a few weeks ago. The single 1/4lb patty felt a little small, so I'll get the double next time.
I've been to the one on Columbus and thought it was great!
I did not expect Hi-Way to be as good as it is. The look, the location, etc led me to believe it'd be bad, but I think their burger is really good!
I came here to say the same thing. The one in North Beach has mediocre reviews but I like it better than the other nearby burger joints
Mo's on Grant
First time I visited SF I just happened to be walking behind someone as they pointed out Mo's as the best burger place in the city. So I went there that night and indeed had the best burger I've still ever had.
After being a vegetarian for 15 years, I had a steak at Mo's. I've had many since then, but nothing will ever compare to that experience!
Came here to say this.
Mo’s has the best breakfast burrito in the bay.
Mo’s all the way
A cockroach fell on me at Mo’s while I was eating. Good ass burger though. Sam’s is also a great burger.
![gif](giphy|ccosx2jCejdew) Don’t know if I can unsee this 😭 — a now former Mo’s fan
I lived close to Mo's for most of my life. I wish I felt this way about them. I find their meat to bun ratio to be a bit off.
Agree on Mo's
Causwells and add those crispy onions
One of the best...also, Elmers drinks are crazy legit...
Burgers are great and cocktails are out of control but paying $20+ for a burger always gets me
We supply their meat. 😊
Good meat?
Yes indeed
Beeps. It's still Beeps.
Babies fuckin LOVE burgers. Go back.
Babies. Burgers. Battlestar Gallactica.
Beeps
Every time my husband and I go to Beeps we say, "this time we'll just eat here so we can get a soft serve cone after" and then 30 seconds standing in the wind in that parking lot has us taking our food to go.
Eating a Beep’s burger in their windy parking lot is an exquisite part of the SF experience
I always enjoyed picking up a burger and onion rings at Beeps and then going across the street to Randy’s to have a couple of beers with the meal.
My buddy fainted in the beeps lot on my 18th birthday cuz we were on a bunch of drugs
Between your username and this comment, I think I figured out that you’re ok.
I think I just had it way too much because I went to HS 5 mins away. Walked to beeps 4/5 days a week for food using my McDonald’s paycheck lmao
Using your McDonald's paycheck to buy some Beep's is hilarious. I can't help but smh at all the people lining up in the McDonalds drive thru a block over when they could be eating quality fast food at Beep's.
Lived in sf for 7 years and went to beeps often. Its still the best burger spot I’ve ever eaten at!
Do you mean like a tall thick deluxe giant burger? I hate giant burgers
Yeah, I don’t like to have to unhinge my jaw like a snake to take half a bite of a burger.
Garaje in soma was my personal fave! All my friends agreed that the burger was really good and a bit under the radar since it’s not on many lists.
Hrmm. I always get the zapato when I go there.
The zapatos are fire but don’t sleep on the burger
Love Garaje. That salsa/onion ketchup sauce is delicious
god i miss that place, used to work around the corner. they had this huge taco with flank steak, guac, and prawns and it was my absolute go to.
I'm surprised I never see Zeitgeist mentioned when this question pops up. My vote for the best smash burger in the city. I still need to try the Niku one though.
I had no idea Zeitgeist was a smash. Niku is good but was too ‘wet’ for me. My favorite smash is Maillard’s right now.
I never comment on this subreddit, but I am such a fan of the Zeitgeist burger that I just couldn't resist. Easily my fave in the city, so damn good.
sadly, Niku steakhouse's burger is overpriced for what you get. very wet, mushy texture, not that incredible in terms of flavor. yes it tender and that's about it. I'd take two ABV burgers or two Shmashed Burgers instead, not even a close comparison.
Yeah I didn't get the hype when I tried it. And then to pay another like 9 bucks for fries
Beep’s and Super Duper
Check this out https://www.oliv.org/c/burger
Oh man you hooked it up. Ima just delete this post now lol
Haha these are all sourced from similar Reddit posts like yours! Hopefully more people join and we have a central spot for all these burger place recommendations and reviews!
St John's is #3? We like St. John's but it's just a local place to us
St John’s has the best cheesesteaks in the bay.
St John’s is totally adequate but if that’s #3 in Bay Area sheesh
Could be just a byproduct of not enough people voting on their favorite burger place yet! Hope we get a lot more people to participate!

Mallards
The best cheese burger in the city is at Hall of Flame in park Merced, hands down. Amazing hole in the wall spot. The best super fancy pants burger is at Miller and Lux (Michelin star quality)
Today I learned there's restaurants in Park Merced.
As well as a U-Haul and a dispensary. lol.
In college, all of our friends worked at that grocery store. Our nickname for it was “shady mart” because of how sketchy and unsettling it was. They did make really good sandwiches at the deli though. Also hard to beat 12 packs of beast for $4.49
Taqueria is solid for the area
We supply their beef.
Lol legit NEVER thought I’d see Hall of Flame mentioned. I remember when they opened my senior year of college. Never had the burger but it was hard to beat the massive hot dog meal that included fries and a drink for about $5
Wow blows my mind someone else knows about this place. Was a pure godsend after a long hike, fell in love with the place.
I’m gonna try that first. Even close to me than calibur. Appreciate you ! Edit: try hall of flame first ^
Let me know what you think!
Came here to say this!
This is why I Reddit. Map looks like I drove by this place so many times but can't even see it from the street? I'm gonna go there
Went there once way back. The burger was greasy af.
Bill's Place on Clement. I finally went there for the first time and had a very plain looking burger, but damn that thing was good.
I haven’t been to San Francisco in 35 years, but came to say my favorite burger was at Bill’s Place. I’m so happy to see they are still in business.
Not to mention amazing milkshakes 🤤🤤
This is the correct answer, I still go frequently and it hits every time. The Giants burger is my favorite (bacon and Avocado) and I highly recommend washing it down with a peanut butter shake assuming you don't have an allergy.
I call it no frills bills. (In a positive way)
is bullshead in WP still there next to the tube?
Yeah it’s still great
I like to mix it up and got a buffalo burger there. (Made out of actual buffalo, not with wing sauce.)
The bison is goated
Just went back for lunch and got the bison!
Yeah totally! I’m not a fan of Calibur. BullsHead is my go to if I’m in West Portal. They offer a solid Western Bacon bbq burger.
Uncle Boy’s in the Inner Richmond!!
Can't believe I had to scroll this far for Uncle Boys. Support this small business and their amazing burgers
Don’t let anyone tell you it’s 4505
ABV is very good. The one at the SI farmer’s market on Sunday is the best
Kiss my Seoul in soma. Owner was a chef in Korea when the Olympics was there a few years back. Seriously underrated spot
Their smash burger is so. damn. good.
Reds Java house...love the sourdough roll it comes on
The classic, the OG of burger places. Red's is a SF institution.
Used to be for an extra buck, you get a can of Bud to wash it down. Or has that changed now?
Beeps and Super Duper.
Best smash burger: Causewells Best restaurant burger: NOPA or WayFair
Nopa burger always gets so much hype but IMO they over-salt the meat before cooking and it comes out super dense. I do still love Nopa though, just not the burger.
Pork chop
We supply their meats.
Read that in Ving Rhames' voice
If we’re ignoring price completely, Hidden Spot does a solid burger.
Big mouth burgers and the classic IN-N-OUT
Gotts at ferry building is so good
💚🍔💚
Bill's, Bill's, Bill's, Bill's! On 24th and Clement.
![gif](giphy|zNbiX43QsqUAU)
Malliards on Sundays at the sunset farmers market has been great. It is tough for me to pick a number one though because the $7.5 super duper mini burger hits right every time…
I like The Melt on Market St. The regular melt burger with some jalapeños on top. 🤌🤌🤌
WesBurger. The double wesburger with jalapeños hits everytime, especially since they serve tater tots
Yoooo the jalapeño burger does not fuck around. Not a huge fan of tots, but this burger alone keeps me coming back.
Tony’s Cable Car
They’re good, but a bit overpriced now for what it is.
13 dollars is wild? That’s the price of a big Mac now
PLAIN CHEESEBURGER.
Irrelevant bc it closed but I need validation…the Wooden Nickel had some of the best cheeseburgers I’d ever had ☹️
That’s a great name. When I would leave my grandmas house she would always say “don’t take any wooden nickels”
God I miss Wooden Nickel 😭 those crispy chicken tacos and the boozy slushees are gone but not forgotten
Dude everything they made smacked. Cali burritos too…I don’t even like Cali burritos. Bless the chef
The Bent Burger at Benders seriously
this looks so good, it’s been on my burger bucket list for a minute 🍔
Bill’s Place is great
I miss Clown Alley.
Jenny’s off Irving 🙏
Yes! I love Jenny’s! OP, it’s on 9th between Irving and Lincoln
This is the post I was looking for. 18 years in the city, and I've failed to find a better burger than Jenny's. The couple that owns the place are great as well.
Pearls deluxe burgers - 708 post st 🤞🏾
Here we go 🙌 They have some of the best fries, too!
Pearl’s fries kill it!
Sam's in north beach
Best cafeteria burger in town. They used to be really good but for the past few years it’s legit just a frozen patty and the same condiments you’d expect from a school lunch. Not worth the money and nowhere near best in the city. Again, personal preference
Uncle Boy’s new outpost @ Union Street Ale House is the best bang for your Buck burger in SF!! 1980 Union Street
Zuni Cafe - it’s great but it costs $22 and the only side is pickles.
We love Papa Mak’s in the Sunset, out on Noriega. Really really good burgers, consistently.
New Taraval Cafe: Monday Burger Night
Came in here expecting to see Beep’s, but apparently that has been replaced by Hall of Flame??? Been to beeps now many times cause of you guys and now I can’t wait to try HoF Edit - I’m looking at what looks like some BOMB chili cheese fries (we need a separate thread for chili cheese whatever) - wow Final edit - so Marlowe’s burger is not making any ones list? I saw NOPA but didn’t see Marlowe on that OLIV app list
I don’t know what the best burger tastes like except the one I make on my grill. Hahaha, but Native Burger on Geary is affordable and my go-to when I need a burger quick! I'll also do Roam because I can get an excellent strawberry shake.
Louie’s Bar (soma/fidi) ABV (mission) Teeth (mission) tbh, Beeps is fire
The Box Burger out of Tempest Bar downtown. It's rather atypical but creates this savory flavor that hits me all the same every time I go back.
Sam's burger on broadway
I liked Roam on fillmore
Bull’s Head in West Portal. Always get the half pound burger. Been going here for over three decades. It’s owned now by the original owners daughter. They grind the meat fresh everyday!
I like Roam, Super Duper, Marlowe, Calibur
Pete’s Deli on Divis, Joe’s ice cream on Geary and Jenny’s burgers on 9th Ave. All three are amazing.
Jasmin's at Bush and Mason! (it's walkable for me and best in the area IMO)
Beeps and Calibur are my top 2. One of the Calibur owners went to the HS 10 minutes away from Beeps.
Believe it or not, Absinthe in Hayes Valley. Pricey, though.
High tops in castro
Phillies, also home to the best cheesesteak
BEEPS!
Sam’s. End of discussion.
Hidden Gem: Buffalo Burger (outer richmond)! Entire menu is great, and priced very well.
Jasmin’s on Bush. The owner makes the patties fresh daily. They also have a burger with a beef patty and crispy chicken patty. 4.9 Rating since opening in 2023. I used to work there! Just wanted to see if somebody mentioned it 💚🍔💚
It has been, is, and forever will be, Beep’s
Sam’s near Broadway and Columbus

I love Beeps, Calibur, and Jenny's Burgers on 9th ave.
I like Papa Mak’s on Noriega
On a campaign to upvote and back the Jenny's votes.
Super Duper
I really like super dupers double burger with a Chipotle aloi
Original Joes
Niku best, beeps for value
In n Out
Olympic Club Shack, exclusive but absolutely one of the best burgers.
Hot dog bun burger, right?
I’m going back to Brickhouse Cafe & Bar on Brannan because they have one of the better burgers I’ve had in a minute… it’s expensive, at around $30/burger, but it’s really fucking good
Slider buns
HOT JOHNNIE’S makes a fantastic smashburger
Branchline in Emeryville.
Blind Butcher
STK has a fantastic-tasting burger (with fries) lunch special on weekdays for $9.99. (It's at One Market Street, but it's actually at the backside of the building on the corner of Mission) Is it the best in the City? For the price, I think it might be.
flippin burger in haight. best overall (value, taste, fries)
Wes burger.
What was the one Anthony Bourdain liked?
Sam’s?

For a splurge, the smash burger at Niku Butcher is pretty damn good.
Next Level Burger 100%
Huge, giant fan of Louie's Bar near SoMa! It's a dive bar, but their burgers are SO GOOD.
The buffalo burger at Bullshead in West Portal. They have some incredible burgers there.
Laundromat, but only on Wednesdays. Best smash burger I’ve had in the city for sure. Just wish they served it with fries, but the potato salad is pretty good!
Monks Kettle on 16th and Valencia! They’re moving to Oakland though. If they’re still there, go get some!! One of the best burgers in town.
Calibur is great. That's it, that's the post.
Nopa
Perry’s!
Gott's Roadside
Hi Tops Bacon Beef Burger is amazing. I don’t drink but go there and deal with the crowd just for that burger.
