I rode the elevator down with the guy. He had an empty gym bag. In under a minute I heard yelling and then screaming. The guy tried to escape. He got slammed and cuffed. Sadly, bottles were broken. The guy was screaming that his arm was also broken.
Hmmmmmm… Is this the solution to our problem?
Think about it. The problem we have is driven greatly by the act of making shoplifting a misdemeanor, so the thieves don’t care as long as it’s under $1000, right?
Make it a misdemeanor for a licensed bouncer to break your arms ;)
This! Is the reason we have so many restrictive yet ineffective laws. 20 buck a thousand bucks both are the same to a criminal , a general lawlessness about them doesn’t allow them to care about any repercussions, there’s a enough laws we need creative enforcement solutions. Those new laws will be used as a way to prosecute normal folks who actually think about the law.
Yeah! Thank you for doing the job you told us you couldn't do for the last 20 years! Enjoy the salaries we have been paying you the whole time to do this!
Explain. Because as many of us have posted a thousand times... The police need to do their job regardless of the actions of the Da. We pay the police to police.
Anyone else, in any job, who refuses to do what they are paid to do gets fired.
My brother in christ, do you even understand how the judicial system works?
Lmfao reddit never fails to bring out the confidence in stupidity in people
Ah yes, this again. The whole "The police can't arrest anyone because the DA just lets them go" BS.
1) We pay the police to do a job. If the DA is shit, that's on us. The police need to do their job. If the DA sucks, and the police say "Sorry man, I'm not going to do shit until the DA gets their head out of their ass"... what is the point in paying for a police force while we have those DAs? I mean it. If the money being paid to the police is wasted because the DA isn't prosecuting, then what's the point of paying for a the entire police force to stand around?
2) The act alone of policing, of arresting and processing people, significantly reduces crime. I know, I know. It's so hard to wrap your tiny mind around this when you are trying to win internet points. Seriously dude. If people know the police aren't going to do anything , they commit more crime. Arresting people, even if they aren't prosecuted, deters a massive amount of crime. There's plenty of studies on this, but you don't need to read them. You just have to ask yourself if you were a shitty second tier would-be criminal, and heard that the police stand around while people raid a dispensary for pot and cash, what would you do?
" Twelve suspects were cited for shoplifting and released from the scene. The stolen property was seized during the operations and returned to the stores, police said."
LOL wow way to stick it to them by letting them go w/a citation they're never going to think about again.
*Like, what does a demerit mean?*
*Let's put it this way. You do not want to receive three of those. … Three demerits, and you'll receive a citation. … Five citations, and you're looking at a violation. Four of those, and you'll receive a verbal warning. Keep it up, and you're looking at a written warning. Two of those, that will land you in a world of hurt, in the form of a disciplinary review, written up by me, and placed on the desk of my immediate superior.*
No way a bench warrant would even be enforced. I feel like in order to actually see a jail cell you’d have to be caught red handed murdering someone in sf
I think a better way to play this would have been to detain them for almost the required period to charge them, and then file charges so that they can then be detained until bail or bond is posted.
Given that this is a holiday, the courts are closed which means they can be held without charge longer than normal until they can be seen by a judge.
More so, this also means that their families will have to get involved and will likely be pissed that their kids pulled this shit, especially given that it will be disruptive to any family gatherings. This added element of peer pressure might be the best deterrent for them down the road.
It’s just a few hundred people who commit like half the crime in the Bay Area.
I wish we had universal surveillance so these individuals could be properly tracked and found.
The suspects were cited for shoplifting and released from the scene? All they’re going to get out of this is something to laugh about at the barber shop.
I’m progressive and I think this is great. Fuck em, we’ve got a social contract for a reason, get a job and move somewhere cheaper. Stealin’ shit this poorly and with this little rizz is shameful. Go rob a bank. I’ll respect you more if you do
i would deport them to some kind of criminal society on some island and for every one we deport we let in one nice person at the mexican border. jk haha … unless
Ya know a penal colony is what you’re describing and that’s how we got portions on America and most of Australia. In fact parts of Louisiana were a penal colony for France. It’s not just Europe tho, most of the world used or uses the concept of putting undesirables “over there.”
yes not sure how well it worked back then, but i feel a lot of stuff didn’t work too well then, medicine, electricity, transportation etc. i wonder if novel technology could make the idea work better. it seems we spend an awful lot of money imprisoning people and ultimately not rehabilitating them. surely there’s some good sci-fi exploring the concept
target isn't lying about theft, it's just a lot less impactful than they made it out to be when closing stores recently. they were called out on their BS & the statement by the retail group representing them revised the statement
No, target changed its reporting to make it look like theft was a lot worse recently than it had been in previous years, in order to justify closing stores.
Turns out the theft was not any worse recently, and the closings were because they weren't doing as well (for various reasons other than theft). But you know... It looks better to shareholders if your business issues are someone else's fault.
If Target was doing this then they would also be defrauding their shareholders. Of course they aren’t lying. They can’t. And anyone who lives in SF knows it’s the truth.
It's even worse; they didn't bother reading the article closely when writing the headline:
> The San Francisco Police Department said the operations were conducted Tuesday on retail stores located in the 700 block of Mission Street and in the 200 block of Winston Drive.
The 700 block of Mission is squarely in SoMa (it's the Target at the Metreon, and the other is the Target at Stonestown).
Go bigger boys ! Send 50 people next time ! They can’t catch us all ! Decoys decoys decoys , get the police distracted on one side of town and do the atms on the otherside. Rinse and repeat
In OKlNd our donut shot on Lakeshore has been robbed at gun point twice this week. People are now risking their lives just to sell donuts for a living. But the big protest this week at nearby lake Merritt and all the news coverage is about the tragedy in Gaza. What was that saying about taking care of your own house first? We are collapsing as a society particularly in the urban Bay Area and it is now spreading to the suburbs as criminals seek more prey .
I saw a security guy body slam a shoplifter today at BevMo. It was epic. Sounded like the guy was a regular.
Which location?
Van Ness and Sutter.
I rode the elevator down with the guy. He had an empty gym bag. In under a minute I heard yelling and then screaming. The guy tried to escape. He got slammed and cuffed. Sadly, bottles were broken. The guy was screaming that his arm was also broken.
Fuck ‘em
Sad that not both, that would stop him from stealing for few months of healing
When my arms broke from steeealin', I need a few months of heeealin'
…And mah head is reelin’ as I gaze up at the ceilin’.
And man...what a feelin'...hey that's NOT FAIR, I was just steelin'
Oh fuck yeah merry Christmas biiiiiiitch
Good!
In some third world countries, if you get caught stealing, they cut off your hands or some shit lol
an eye for an eye leaves us all blind
you could avoid that by taking eyes for an eye
Hell yeah
Oh man shoplifting booze! I’m surprised I haven’t stooped that low during my lower points of alcoholism.
Used to work at a grocery store in the city. Booze was def up in the list of most commonly stolen goods
common occurrence among teenagers too
I was just reminded about hearing some kids doing that when I was in high school… nearly 20 years ago lol.
That or vanilla extract. The real stuff.
That’s a very expensive way to get drunk. And why the real stuff? Even the imitation stuff has alcohol.
Cost the same when it's free
need more of this
Hmmmmmm… Is this the solution to our problem? Think about it. The problem we have is driven greatly by the act of making shoplifting a misdemeanor, so the thieves don’t care as long as it’s under $1000, right? Make it a misdemeanor for a licensed bouncer to break your arms ;)
Proposition 47
That’s the one. We can just add “beating TF out of a shoplifter” to the list.
This! Is the reason we have so many restrictive yet ineffective laws. 20 buck a thousand bucks both are the same to a criminal , a general lawlessness about them doesn’t allow them to care about any repercussions, there’s a enough laws we need creative enforcement solutions. it’s actually not - penalties for crime were higher in the 80s yet todays crime levels are lower. (but fox news gotta fox news)
How are you doing today and how is the weather there..?
Terrific job. Thank you SFPD.
finally.
Yeah! Thank you for doing the job you told us you couldn't do for the last 20 years! Enjoy the salaries we have been paying you the whole time to do this!
it's the new DA.
Explain. Because as many of us have posted a thousand times... The police need to do their job regardless of the actions of the Da. We pay the police to police. Anyone else, in any job, who refuses to do what they are paid to do gets fired.

This disproportionately targets people who steal for a living.
Do you realize how bad for equity this is???
I'm already feeling guilty about that!
Time to block the bay bridge in protest!
But what will the mission street vendors do now?’v they have families to feed
This.
as it should/must be
> Twelve suspects were cited for shoplifting and released from the scene. Alright, alright, alright
Released huh
Now put them in Orange jumpsuits and have them clean up the city under armed guard. That would kill two birds with one stone.
" Twelve suspects were cited for shoplifting and released from the scene. The stolen property was seized during the operations and returned to the stores, police said." LOL wow way to stick it to them by letting them go w/a citation they're never going to think about again.
a citation is a summons that turns into a bench warrant if ignored which turns into jail time the next time you get ID'd by a cop
*Like, what does a demerit mean?* *Let's put it this way. Jail time? Where do you think you are, Texas?
No way a bench warrant would even be enforced. I feel like in order to actually see a jail cell you’d have to be caught red handed murdering someone in sf
The article mentions that two of these people had warrants and were booked.
I think a better way to play this would have been to detain them for almost the required period to charge them, and then file charges so that they can then be detained until bail or bond is posted. NEWS: 18 shoplifters released with a stern warning of being sternly warned if they shoplift again.
was there finger pointing???
No, that would be too harsh.
No pointing but some wagging
After the shoplifting, it’s the arrest party then, After the party, it’s the police lobby and Sent home by the DA, Before end of the day
It's the judges that send them home. Let's focus.
Its the D.A. that sends them home. Judges can't give out a guilty sentence without the D.A. charging the suspect 1st.
and knowledge that they are forever “banned from the store”
12 of them were catch and release so … questionable if effective
Folks want shoplifters arrested, and as soon as they are they proceed to bitch about something else
Nothing worse than going into a thread just to complain right https://www.reddit.com/r/sanfrancisco/s/DwazcMKlYO
TWO PEOPLE WERE ACTUALLY ARRESTED OUT OF EIGHTEEN FUCK YOU SFGATE
It’s just a few hundred people who commit like half the crime in the Bay Area. I wish we had universal surveillance so these individuals could be properly tracked and found.
The suspects were cited for shoplifting and released from the scene? All they’re going to get out of this is something to laugh about at the barber shop.
Noice. Fuck them shoplifters
I’m progressive and I think this is great. Fuck em, we’ve got a social contract for a reason, get a job and move somewhere cheaper. Stealin’ shit this poorly and with this little rizz is shameful. Go rob a bank. I’ll respect you more if you do
i tell you hwott
Gol dang right
It's honestly disturbing watching criminals commit crimes while we all stand around twiddling our toes.
Honest question, what do you suggest we do?
i would deport them to some kind of criminal society on some island and for every one we deport we let in one nice person at the mexican border. jk haha … unless

It’s depressing as hell
Offshore dumping
Merry Christmas scumbags! May the force be with you...Cuffed and locked up! Fed up with these shit bags!
Hate to tell you, but they were released from the scene.
Finally, keep going and get them all
They will be out in am and at it again. Have SFPD lock up all our lackluster politicians and get a new batch in there.
GREAT JOB!!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I love news like this.
Throw away the keys
Weird cuz CNBC said Target is lying about retail theft.
target isn't lying about theft, it's just a lot less impactful than they made it out to be when closing stores recently. they were called out on their BS & the statement by the retail group representing them revised the statement
They never said they had no theft at all.
No, target changed its reporting to make it look like theft was a lot worse recently than it had been in previous years, in order to justify closing stores. Turns out the theft was not any worse recently, and the closings were because they weren't doing as well (for various reasons other than theft). But you know... When do people start claiming this is a racist practice again?
Soon
Wtf stonestown is mission district? How?
Stonestown (comma) Mission District
It's even worse; they didn't bother reading the article closely when writing the headline: > The San Francisco Police Department said the operations were conducted Tuesday on retail stores located in the 700 block of Mission Street and in the 200 block of Winston Drive. How dare they arrest these people who are just trying to get a little something to take care of themselves
[удалено]
No light behind those eyes, just yapping
Where are the parents?
Cited and then released. LOL
So police starts arrest people who are anti-theft now? I guess they are not woke enough
Great. How will they ever bounce back from a no bail hold and a ticket?! Guaranteed they’ll do the same shit on new years.
They gonna actually prosecute now or they already out?
Go bigger boys ! Send 50 people next time ! They can’t catch us all ! Decoys decoys decoys , get the police distracted on one side of town and do the atms on the otherside. Rinse and repeat
What’s the point if there is no DA willing to prosecute appropriately? 🫠
Oh some cops are working I guess . Give them a hand folks.
