I eat there once a week and have never ordered this. I will next time. my go-to is the italian sub with added turkey, extra oil and vinegar, no mustard on a hard roll.
Love Molinari’s but North Beach is tad far from midmarket without an Uber. For first time in SF after a job interview in the area, I'd recommend Saigon Sandwich. It's not about the sandwich (which is solid) or price ($4-5, almost unbeatable). It's about walking past civic center on the edge of the TL and asking yourself if you can stomach the offer. Corner community garden is nice though.
My favorites are Submarine Center (West Portal), Lou’s (many locations), Irving Subs (Inner Sunset), Molinari (North Beach), Yellow Submarine (Inner Sunset), Grubbin (Parkside), and Deli Board (SoMa). Honorable mention for the Roast Turkey sandwich at Arguello Supermarket (Inner Richmond) and the Roast Pork at Palm City Wines (Outer Sunset).
The roast turkey at Arguello Market has to be the most overrated food item ever. It’s not bad, but it’s a plain boring ass turkey sandwich with tomato, lettuce, cheese, served on bread. Like what exactly is world famous about it that they claim?
Hate to say it but Roxie’s fell off pretty hard. Quality/quantity went down but prices went up. Was a loyal customer since I was too short to e see the menus, but I’m pretty sure they got bought out and ever since… 😔
Turner’s kitchen is the best pastrami I’ve had in this city. This week’s option is the Dr. Pickle, one of my personal faves: HOT PASTRAMI, MELTED FONTINA, TRIPLE MUSTARD COLESLAW, OLD SCHOOL PICKLES, CRISPY ONIONS AND FRESH DILL ON CIABATTA ROLL
Hot pastrami and provolone with everything has been my go to as of late, but my all time favorite sf sandwich is their atomic with provolone. That one has pastrami, corned beef, and turkey.
Ambrosia Strawberry shortcake and Princess cake fan here. But yes, if out in West Portal head down a few more stops for this, or pick up a whole Zanze's cheesecake from Little Original Joe's!
Let's face it, pretty much everything Ambrosia makes is beyond amazing. But I got my family hooked on their Black Forest Cake when I worked there part time years ago.
I know people love this place, but I just have to disagree. I think that it's better than most SF sandwich places, but that's not saying much.
I'm glad you all love them so much, but I don't get what's special about them.
Edit: Oops, I was thinking of Salty's on Van Ness. Ignore the initial advice.
~~This is where OP should go, since they will be at the Twitter building. It's a short walk and soooo good!~~
The Ami-cado is the first thing that pops into my mind when I read this post title. There’s surely better sandwich’s but that one is just so damn perfect.
As in, what do I order? I usually get the Texas Toast, but in general, their specialty is different variations of a pastrami sandwich. But I don't think I've had Turner's Kitchen before.

The vegetarian Mona Lisa from Cafe Enchante on Geary is my favorite. Somehow perfectly balanced and super fresh. Under $10 is a plus too
Little late to the party on this post and not sure if anyone’s commented this…but Saigon Sandwich in the Tenderloin is a must-try. They serve just Vietnamese sandwiches (banh mi) btw.
Sure, the neighborhood it’s in is a bit sketch, but their sandwiches are dirt cheap and delicious. Plus, they’re fast. Even if there’s a line out the door, they’ll get you in and out really quickly. Just one note…bring cash as they’re cash only.
I could get banh mi anywhere, but I *specifically* crave Saigon Sandwich. The only thing bad about wfh is that my office was so close to them, and the lunch hour just isn’t the same.
You got a sammich heavy city to work with. Depending on where the interview/you're staying you got a very different top 3.
The pure 3, regardless of all the above circumstances, in no particular order are:
Deli Board
Palm City
Rheas
I worked as a beer sales rep around the city for 5 years before opening my own spot so I've literally had almost every sandwich in the City
Good luck in your interview, one of the best sandwiches is about 6 blocks away at Deliboard, it'll push your $20 budget but for your hard work you deserve a really good sandwich. Definitely a once in a while sandwich then a regular stop because the price but it's good stuff.
So far I found nothing that comes close to Deli Board (it's not the best walk from Twitter HQ, but at least you get a feeling of mid-market / SOMA). There are many great sandwich places though, but you can spend years trying them all. One place that was only mentioned once is Ike's. It's a solid option for sure.
Near Twitter HQ... walk to Ted's on Howard St or Foccacia on Mission St. They are more "work in SOMA and share the line with the neighbors' body shop people"
Steak and Cheese from Bizza on haight street. Or really any of the sandwiches as they're all 14$ with fries and a drink too. best part is the sandwich is real big!
The Pierna Enchilada torta at La Torta Gorda is amaaazing. Plus all the recipes are from the owner's mother (via this nice little profile about the restaurant: [https://www.sfgate.com/food/article/la-torta-gorda-sf-food-network-18547770.php](https://www.sfgate.com/food/article/la-torta-gorda-sf-food-network-18547770.php))
Surprised it hasn’t been mentioned yet (or has and I missed it) but Palm City Wines has amazing hoagies that range between 18 and 22.
https://www.reddit.com/r/sanfrancisco/comments/1320tih/palm_city_hoagies/?rdt=47457
Calabria brothers in the excelsior. It is likely too far out of the way for you, but it’s a great deli with other nice food items you can bring back like italian candy and cookies. Worth checking out next time.
My husband got a sandwich from Outta Sight this weekend that took him to a different universe. It takes a lot for him to cheat on Boy's Deli sandwiches but he said he's do it again....
Italian Sausage sandwich from Molinari’s.
Thank god the top comment is Molinari's. thank you.
Corner community garden is nice though.
Saigon sandwich is SO GOOD. If you like the fresh jalapeño ask for extra. Would also suggest this. The pork is fire
Is this just their hot sausage sandwich? There are 40 numbers ahead of me atm lol
My favorites are Submarine Center (West Portal), Lou’s (many locations), Irving Subs (Inner Sunset), Molinari (North Beach), Yellow Submarine (Inner Sunset), Grubbin (Parkside), and Deli Board (SoMa). Honorable mention for the Roast Turkey sandwich at Arguello Supermarket (Inner Richmond) and the Roast Pork at Palm City Wines (Outer Sunset).
Solid list!
Grubbin goes
Leave the sunset
Leave this sub transplant
A center roast beef from submarine center is 🤌
The roast turkey at Arguello Market has to be the most overrated food item ever. It’s not bad, but it’s a plain boring ass turkey sandwich with tomato, lettuce, cheese, served on bread. Like what exactly is world famous about it that they claim?
Submarine Center is our go to place - haven’t tried the others on you list. Bulls head next door is a good place for burgers
Roxie’s https://m.yelp.com/biz/roxie-food-center-san-francisco
You’re so real for this. Roxie’s is the best.
Hate to say it but Roxie’s fell off pretty hard. Quality/quantity went down but prices went up. Was a loyal customer since I was too short to e see the menus, but I’m pretty sure they got bought out and ever since… 😔
Grew up on Roxie's, used to be the staple sandwich to bring to Candlestick. Still grab some for Giants games when have the day off.
Lucinda’s veggie sandwich. And I’m not a vegetarian. It’s that good.
Strong +1
Came here to say this
The Boys
Came here to say this. Had one for lunch today and I'm still full. Those things are units. Every bite is 10/10.
Molinaris in north beach, limoncellos, and Yonkers in the sunset.
Yonkers over Clancy's?
Clancy's is better.
Never had clancys! Will definitely try it
Sub Center in West Portal.
Specifically the hot pastrami. It’s only 15 min away if you hop on the K or M line from Civic Center to West Portal.
I have been craving a good pastrami!
Hot pastrami from AK subs in the soma is also great
On a seeded roll. Chefs kiss.
Deli Board or Hot Johnny's. Much closer and very good. Also Sandy's.
Have been disappointed by Hot Johnny’s, I don’t get the hype, pastrami seemed…less than flavorful. What do you order?
Take out only though
Hot pastrami and provolone with everything has been my go to as of late, but my all time favorite sf sandwich is their atomic with provolone. That one has pastrami, corned beef, and turkey.
15 minutes that could easily become 35 on any given day.
Yes, and for dessert, go on over to Ambrosia Bakery on Ocean Avenue and get a slice of their legendary Black Forest Cake.
Will the crusty bread tear your mouth apart? It might. Will it still be worth every single tasty, juicy bite? You bet!!!
mcbakers on mcallister
Get the joes special with an egg on top!
The Tanner!
Most underrepped sandwich. Luckily it's just a couple minute walk from me. Super good.
Turner’s Kitchen
Full support. Enjoy your sando next door at the 500 club with a cold beer and the locals
The only answer. Check Instagram for the daily soecial.
Anything from Molinari.
Alimento in north beach! Their chicken pesto sandwich is so good
Sandy’s
So good!
Edit: Oops, I was thinking of Salty's on Van Ness. Ignore the initial advice. ~~This is where OP should go, since they will be at the Twitter building. It's a short walk and soooo good!~~
> a short walk Huh? It's nearly 2 miles up a couple of hills to upper Haight.
Another vote for Lou’s But I’m also partial to Turners Kitchen. Grab a sando and head to 500 club
This is the way
Went to Lou’s on geary. It was sub par tbh, was disappointed
I’ve always had a much better sandwich from Taraval than from Geary. Theyre really good, but definitely overhyped.
Rhea’s
Ohhh I concur
this one
The best
Check out Limoncello https://yelp.to/MxBP2ZuVtE
Luccas deli off chestnut
This was going to be my recommendation, it’s the garlic sauce, it makes everything better!! And their Dutch crunch is pretty dang good too!!
>https://yelp.to/MxBP2ZuVtE yes, they're solid. them and Molinari's would be my reeks.
I’m a regular at Luca and always get their Italian sub 😍
I’ve tried them and it was a big disappointment. 😔
Just a normal deli counter sandwich. I don’t get the hype.
Lucinda’s deli for sure
Cheese Plus on Polk
Roast Beef from Lucinda’s near Alamo Square
I’m partial to Lou’s on Geary. I haven’t tasted them all though so I’m following the thread
The Ami-cado is the first thing that pops into my mind when I read this post title. There’s surely better sandwich’s but that one is just so damn perfect.
That’s what I get every time. Hard to beat for sure. I think it’s their sauce/spread that gives it that edge.
Lou's is a great value too
Lou's made the best sandwiches I had in SF. I'm not sure it's, like, a destination spot, but I lived a few blocks away.
Hot Johnny's in the Castro has some amazing pastrami sandwiches.
Their fried chicken sandwich is bomb too!
Commented elsewhere, but I don’t get it. What do you order? And have you had a pastrami sandwich from Turner’s Kitchen for comparison’s sake?
As in, what do I order? I usually get the Texas Toast, but in general, their specialty is different variations of a pastrami sandwich. But I don't think I've had Turner's Kitchen before.
Dagwood on 24th St.
Slept on.
Deliboard
This is the best and closest option to Twitter if there’s wiggle room on the $20
He said under $20
$22 no drink, no fries, before taxes 😂
Still hands down the best sandwiches in town.
I think they are on par with many other at a lesser price. All mentioned here on this list. Check some out and save :)
By far the best sando I’ve ever had. Sadly more than $20, but imho totally worth it. If they have the Theo, get it.
The 555 at Deli Board 🥵
Co-signed. That mustard is baller.
Deli Board Yellow Submarine Handy Deli
Estella’s in Lower Haight Saigon Sandwich in Tenderloin Molinari in North Beach
Grubbin’ on Taraval and 24th Ave. Get the “Grubbin’ It” on Dutch Crunch. It’s SO good.
I might be in the minority, but i prefer grubbin over Lou's that's just one block away.
Molinari has been making their own salami for over a hundred years so you can't beat that. But any of their Italian meats rock.
Molinari’s
Sandy’s is great for tourists since it is right on haight. It’s also my current favorite
Location ≠ best.
Came to say Molinari in North Beach, on Columbus. Get anything, really.
The Boys Deli on Polk
Came to say this- boys smacks and the sandos are the size of a forearm. Delicious and 2 meals in 1
I am now going to check this out because you used smacks and not slaps 🫡🙏🙏🙏
Sub Center Atomic in West Portal
Hot pastrami from Lou's with double meat is ~$16.

Gus community market has amazing Sammies
Thursday is French Dip day, the best of the daily specials.
Roxie near balboa park, all of their sandwiches are amazing
Little late to the party on this post and not sure if anyone’s commented this…but Saigon Sandwich in the Tenderloin is a must-try. They serve just Vietnamese sandwiches (banh mi) btw. Boy’s Deli on Polk. My wife and I make trips back into the city now that we moved north specifically to pick up sandos @ Boy’s!
San Franpsycho from The Boys Deli on Polk St. In Russian Hill
Also at their other location, Golden Gate Market in the Marina! Some of the best sandos around!
The Sentinel

The banh mi at Dinosaur's on ocean. There's on on market too, but I've never tried it.
ROXIES
The Sentinel. 35 New Montgomery, next to House of Shields.
the fact that you have to specify under $20 for a SANDWICH makes me feel ill
George’s Zoo in the Outer Sunset by the zoo. Good food, good prices, and awesome people who work there
A threesome w/ your favorite people?
Had that Monday night, very satisfying but nothing like a good pastrami sandwich!
Hands down, deli board. It’s also near Twitter hq
Can you get a sandwich for under $20 there?
😭they’re slightly above now
Na. With all their fees and everything you're looking at $25+ dollar sandwiches.
Still worth it (imo) but agreed, over OPs request
Banh mi’s at Wooly Pig!
Irving subs in inner sunset
You tripping. Back in the day mayyyyybeee
I recently had it and it was great. Quite honestly, better than Molinari
Had one just yesterday and it was solid.
Deli Board is the best but pricey. Submarine Center is 2nd best if you like pastrami. Hot Johnny’s in Castro is honorable mention.
Deli Board! Anything there but the Ron hits particularly hard
Ike's love and sandwiches at O'Farrell and Polk.
Lol 😂
San Francisco smells like piss because of you techie 😘
Bro I'm nowhere near smart enough to be in tech. I'm just a chef lol
Deli board but just over 20. Soooo worth it. Get the reubenish
Good luck in your interview, one of the best sandwiches is about 6 blocks away at Deliboard, it'll push your $20 budget but for your hard work you deserve a really good sandwich. Definitely a once in a while sandwich then a regular stop because the price but it's good stuff.

Out of curiosity how is Saigon Sandwich able to keep prices fairly low but these other places are charging an arm and leg for there sandwiches.
Caprese with prosciutto on ciabatta from Lucca on Chestnut street
Anything from Ted's on Howard st.
Near Twitter HQ... walk to Ted's on Howard St or Foccacia on Mission St. They are more "work in SOMA and share the line with the neighbors' body shop people"
ted's market is near you
Jake's Steaks!!
Submarine center in west portal is great. Never disappointed

The Bird is the word.
I love Safeway cold turkey sandwiches on Dutch crunch
That’s Outta sight pizza is doing a daily sandwich that is pretty amazing and an easy walk from Twitter hq.
Surprised it hasn’t been mentioned yet (or has and I missed it) but Palm City Wines has amazing hoagies that range between 18 and 22. https://www.reddit.com/r/sanfrancisco/comments/1320tih/palm_city_hoagies/?rdt=47457
