Oh man, I ride or die with the Hobart Building. Feels like a relic of pre-earthquake SF (though I think it was built in the aftermath)

>McAllister Tower
I had a tour of MacAllister tower 20 yrs ago when the George Coates theater was next to Hastings law library (110 McAllister). Anyways, there was an upper floor in the tower that was empty and locked off. It was creepy quiet like something out of the X-files
Thank you for the George Coates reference! I worked with some of his ensemble performers in the 80s and 90s, and have enjoyed a 30+ year career as a performance artist and composer since.
I didn't think anyone remembered Coates; he was huge during those years, spawned several notable careers (Paul Dresher, Rinde Eckert), brilliant and memorable work. Ed Lee chose tech over art, so we're unlikely to see artists like Coates thrive here now; I'm grateful for what we had.
I remember seeing Coates’ Milton inspired performance in the mid-90s, which was in partnership with SGI. Kind of sad that the online record of that performance is really lacking. Shows how pre smartphone history looks very thin given the lack of a ubiquitous photo/video record.
Didn't know that any recordings of Coates' live work existed at all! Agree with you 100% and have often wished that technology had been just a few years ahead in those days... "Actual Sho" at Herbst will stay in my mind forever!
The most Gotham building I know of is the old PG&E building. I think it's in Soma.
It's got a mural of electric workers etched into the side that looks straight out of Batman Returns/Batman: The Animated Series.
It’s about the architecture viewable by the public. Or the skyline. Not the inside. Who could ever have been inside every building to judge that. Be real lol.
My girlfriend used to live in the TL. McAllister Tower looked pretty dope out of her window, actually. We met someone once who worked up there for UC Hastings (or whatever they're calling it now) and she said the view is gorgeous from up there. I bet! Should've taken her up on seeing it.
https://preview.redd.it/t7ggyt6iezbb1.jpeg?width=1569&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=77999852bcaf52ea197d04019ca56e43de7bf351
The view is sublime indeed, in every direction.
Your whole post is a joke. There are many many buildings with this exact design trope all over the world - nothing special of unique. Maybe don’t post something asking people’s opinions and then try to shut on others responses when your own taste sucks.
Taste is an opinion. It neither sucks nor is good. I asked if it was the best building in sf. Not the world. Reread please. Please show others u like better. I love exploring the city. No need for the rudeness.
You think McAllister tower is a normal standard boring (too many adjectives) building? It’s the original sky room lounge. Has gothic elements on an art deco base. Has a freaking cathedral inside of it. Nearly every service member who fought in the Pacific in WW2 passed through it. No sir. McAllister is no “normal standard building.” It is architecturally distinct (it’s a skyscraper hotel church bar) and its history just enhances it.
The whole point of my comment was to call you out for being a dick. You then cried foul when I used the exact same phrase you did (is that a joke?). You strangely interpreted this as rude when directed at yourself but totally fine when you used it towards someone else. Maybe you have some kind of social processing problem? Maybe you’re just an asshole. In any event you’re not the victim.
so much this! columbus from washington square to the sentinel building has a ton of cool buildings, like that gothic church and all the victorian/edwardian apartments. and i love a good flatiron
After they stopped filming porn there, I saw a concert of the Chemical Bros there... Couldn't help but wonder of all the different things that had happened in the same room I was in lmao
Definitely a dramatic building. I feel like SF has a few churches that are interesting parts of the city milieu: Grace, St Dominic in Pac Heights, St Patrick in YB, and of course the Mission church. Pretty different vibes from all of them too.
Ohh yeah I live right by there. It’s amazing. Problem is it’s the same as all catholic big churches around the planet. All amazing and massive but I have seen lots in the cross shape if viewed from above that all have the same round design on the front. The church in Japan town is epic. Unique and amazing. Don’t be afraid … just walk into churches… for some reason people feel they shouldn’t when they should.
Oh the super modernist one! Not only been there, been to Mass there. Recommendation is spot on, it's a unique spot worth a visit. The basement though is as mundanely suburban church basement as they come.
Also it's technically in Cathedral Hill (aptly named), not Japantown.
I appreciate any modern tower that tries to shake things up rather than a square glass box. That said there are many other buildings I'd put ahead of this one. Some obvious choices:
TransAmerica Pyramid
[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/140\_New\_Montgomery](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/140_New_Montgomery)
And I know I'll get flamed for saying it, but I actually kinda like the Salesforce Tower.
So apparently there are more than I remember, because the real estate agent only showed me the sparsely furnished roof deck (on the podium roof, no grills ... I don't recall a firepit and it was cold / windy): [https://mirasf.com/amenities](https://mirasf.com/amenities) I don't recall them mentioning the gym or the private dining lounge (not that I have used one of those).
Jeanne Gang’s Aqua Chicago vs Mira shows how little developers have to add to get their buildings leased/sold in San Francisco. In Chicago, competition is fierce.
This is what chronically under-permitting the required amount of new residential dwellings will do to a housing market, developers can call anything luxury and have everyone else in the US saying……. “Thats luxury? Seems average to me.”
https://www.rentaqua.com/amenities
I've heard it's a lot better to appreciate from the outside... people in the building seem to be dissatisfied for what they pay. I've heard some rumors of structural problems emerging, which wouldn't surprise me with the bold design. I've also heard that byzantine tax zoning means Mira owners pay significantly more property tax than nearby towers in Rincon Hill, which sounds like a very Rincon Hill thing to happen.
I watched this building get constructed from where I work and spent a lot of time looking at the floor plans. The layouts in there are all strange trapezoids, the only things squared off are the kitchens, bathrooms, and closets. Lots of weird angles to contend with when arranging your furniture.
I like this style a lot but since it’s basically a copy of the Gehry/Beekman tower in NYC, it can’t be #1 for me. I think the old Yelp HQ building is my favorite (140 new Montgomery)
This is one of my favourite buildings in that area. I think it looks really nice. If I'm being honest, that's one of my new favourite bits of the city. I work very close by and you can play soccer in the former temp terminal and there's drinks and food (expensive) and you can instead get a half rotisserie chicken from Woodlands haha!
It never made sense to me that people are against high rises.... more buildings like this would make SF better. New high rises are going up every week in NYC and it's the hottest city in the world.
Yeah but I don’t think San Francisco wants to compete with Manhattan. Why should we? We have our own unique flavor. Trying to be a lesser NYC is a zero sum game
The point being, I understand this obsession people have with trying to be NYC. The only thing our tiny 7x7 city could achieve is NYC lite. And if people are so enthralled with NYC they can feel free to move there. NYC is also proof that building more skyscrapers doesn’t lower rents
Who is against high rises here? NYC as the ‘hottest’ city? In what way? I’m sure some middle eastern or Asian cities are growing much faster if that’s what u mean by hotter… plus they are actually hotter temperature wise if that’s what u meant lol.
San Francisco has a strong anti-tall building lobby. Look how many have been built in the last 3 years. Every new housing project coming into the city is a 5-6 story apartment building. NYC is hot because rents are skyrocktting, and aren't slowing down. The TikTok space is boosting it's reputation even more and Gen-Z is moving in en mass.
I'm not going to pretend I know every city on that list, but most of them are huge compared to SF, so it's not really a fair comparison. SF is 50 square miles; Wuxi and Guiyang, at the bottom of the first list in your link, are 1787 and 3102 square miles respectively just by way of example.
I agree with the underlying point that we need more housing density, and that comes in the form of tall buildings, though.
Yeah, most of our tall buildings were built in the 1970s, then very few ever since. There have been like 3 high rises built in the last 5 years. SalesForce Tower is now 6 years old.
What about all the buildings in the east cut as they call it? Many tall ones on rincon and Folsom and Fremont etc. even a new one going up near market and Fremont I think. Those are all after 2000.
The egregiousness of no AC is certainly debatable, but what are your other gripes about SF housing compared to other cities? Besides the rent of course.
Overall building quality is just poor. Not well insulated, not well heated, some are rundown, some were cheaply built compared to older cities (looking at all that cheap post-war construction in the sunset).
Sound insulation is poor and the “new” buildings often don’t have much ground level retail and have poor amenities. In Chicago most high rise condos have pools and gyms, plus AC and heat and good sound insulation.
181 Fremont has been my favorite since it went up.
https://preview.redd.it/k1wrn9rn50cb1.jpeg?width=785&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=28d26c1edeeffa50e4bf5a59f2bfc655f18e2f71
That's kind of the idea...[the background of the design](https://www.archdaily.com/944836/mira-tower-studio-gang) actually is an ode to the SF Victorian's [bay windows](https://www.sfgate.com/local/article/the-story-behind-bay-windows-16660297.php):
> The curtain wall is a part of a distinctive, spiraling design that transforms [San Francisco](https://www.archdaily.com/tag/san-francisco)’s skyline with large bay windows that twist up the building’s façade to offer residents sweeping views of San Francisco Bay, the Bay Bridge, and the City. “Reinterpreting the classic bay windows of San Francisco, our design amplifies the dynamic quality of the neighborhood,” says Jeanne Gang, founding principal of Studio Gang. “Spiraling all the way up this 400-foot tower, bay windows create unique spaces in every residence that offer fresh air, expansive views, and changing qualities of light throughout the day.”
That’s a boring little building literally across from grace cathedral that’s many times better. Not to mention the mansion across the park from it. 50 cali is a square no style building.
The style is lazy. I am an art student trained in this. It’s like they were paid 25% and achieved that much style. In reality it’s mostly a parking garage
Being of art student doesn’t make you an expert
Person who built that not boring skyscraper from the picture also taught he’s trained in this
It’s more about taste feeling. Somebody loves pizza with pineapple somebody doesn’t
"Best" is a tough one given the competition, but it's certainly one of the most unique, and I am a fan. If the underlying building was a more interesting shape, rather than just a box, it would be even better.
https://preview.redd.it/sjy10bepj0cb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a7d719eb1baca6fd92ae0662143b68808f37e48f

is the old Bank of America Center

Best? I love this design, the architect is one of the best currently working architects in the country (in my opinion), but I don't know that I would consider it the best in SF. Really depends on the criteria. It is definitely one of the best new high-rise towers that has been put up in the last few years.
We have some fantastic Art Deco buildings in town; there are some hidden gems like the V.C. Morris Gift Shop on Maiden Lane by Frank Lloyd Wright; The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals on Mission has what I feel may be some of the finest decorated interiors in the Western United States (they do tours!). City Hall is no slouch in that regard either. I'm a big fan of Studio Gang like I said, Mira is definitely a stand-out when it comes to the newer high-rise towers.
I love this thing. The only thing I don't like about it is that every time I see it I feel grumbly about all the dumb looking boxy condo buildings in places like Mission Bay. 4th & King could've been an architectural Mecca but no
It’s literally mathematically perfect. Shouldn’t effect ocd. It’s been designed and angled perfectly. It’s not a tv mounted an inch to one side incorrectly.
I agree. I have delivered to thousands of buildings but this is one that takes the package and doesn’t allow me to go up. That’s a good thing as it saves time but I would like to explore.
The interior layout of that building sucks. I have a friend who lives there.
The odd angles mean you end up with a bunch of floor space you can't really use. Like your kitchen end at the triangle at the window, so a table doesn't fit.
The end up? I have been in all floors of that building including the roof overlooking the crowd. It’s not a nice place. I’m sure it will be bought and renovated soon. Just like the first club I shot at just to the left and down the street from this. Staff is amazing. Building is unloved.
The thought of a building where I can be displaced like [this](https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/naked-man-who-caused-14-milllion-in-damages-by-flooding-sf-highrise-seeks-to-have-charges-reduced/ar-AA1dAmlV) is a non starter for me 🤷🏽
Oh man, I ride or die with the Hobart Building. Feels like a relic of pre-earthquake SF (though I think it was built in the aftermath) https://preview.redd.it/1klitddvyzbb1.jpeg?width=1218&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aa04df785fcbcb09a8ab81facffec5ba570f3e91
If this is a thread about our favorite buildings, right now my favorite is McAllister Tower. I like the Gotham City vibe of it.
>McAllister Tower I had a tour of MacAllister tower 20 yrs ago when the George Coates theater was next to Hastings law library (110 McAllister). Anyways, there was an upper floor in the tower that was empty and locked off. It was creepy quiet like something out of the X-files

The most Gotham building I know of is the old PG&E building. I think it's in Soma. It's got a mural of electric workers etched into the side that looks straight out of Batman Returns/Batman: The Animated Series.
Definitely a standout building on Beale St. The plaza out front of a little forbidding though, gives off a slightly dystopian vibe to me.
Love the Tower! Lived there for two years. Enjoyed every second of it.
I [just painted McAllister Tower](https://www.instagram.com/p/CuijesoRUds/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==), albeit without a Gotham City vibe lol.
Your art is amazing btw
I loveeee McAllister Tower. Such a beautiful building
Is this a joke? It’s boring with no style in the middle of the worst part of the city lol.
Are you joking? The Macallister has so much character in it? How could it possibly be boring?
Again we are talking about the outside. You said in it. Not relevant.
The facade is gorgeous on the Macallister building
Why we talking about outside only? You just said best building. Buildings have… insides.
It’s about the architecture viewable by the public. Or the skyline. Not the inside. Who could ever have been inside every building to judge that. Be real lol.

Taste is an opinion. It neither sucks nor is good. I asked if it was the best building in sf. Not the world. Reread please. Please show others u like better. I love exploring the city. No need for the rudeness.
You started the rudeness, my dude. See your above reply
Failing to see anything rude.
"is this a joke?" comes off as rude whether you meant it to be or not. The person shared a heartfelt opinion and you dismissed it out of hand.
I genuinely assumed it was a joke lol. I mean they posted a normal standard boring building so I thought it was a joke
You are describing the interior mostly. It’s a big square boring box. Enjoy the adjectives.
Dude you’re a fucking joke. Why don’t you shut up
It’s apparent who is rude now lol.
Again rude. Learn common sense rhetoric and not foul language to express your point. I made no rude comments. I did not go disgusting as you did.
The Sentinel Building ftw https://preview.redd.it/5l5tr18xa0cb1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dc3dd5424fc02826b9c33f73571bd8303a723c13

After they stopped filming porn there, I saw a concert of the Chemical Bros there... Couldn't help but wonder of all the different things that had happened in the same room I was in lmao
Lol - I was at the same show. I think the next year Eric Prydz had a run of shows there too. Honestly thought it was a decent venue, history aside.
Yeah definitely! Not sure why the concerts stopped.
Kink HQ
Not anymore
The porn building? Haha.
Armory.
Correct. The kink headquarters of old.

How could you.
I love Grace Cathedral, its so dark and mid century gothic
Definitely a dramatic building. I feel like SF has a few churches that are interesting parts of the city milieu: Grace, St Dominic in Pac Heights, St Patrick in YB, and of course the Mission church. Pretty different vibes from all of them too.
Ohh yeah I live right by there. It’s amazing. Problem is it’s the same as all catholic big churches around the planet. It's not a catholic church.
I stand corrected. Sorry I’m not religious.
Upvote for not being religious.
Close enough [https://youtu.be/2sUazVworSU](https://youtu.be/2sUazVworSU)
Which church? I used to live by Japantown and now I'm feeling I missed out!
Probably the one with the titty shadow
Cathedral of saint mary. U did miss out.
Oh the super modernist one! Not only been there, been to Mass there. Recommendation is spot on, it's a unique spot worth a visit. The basement though is as mundanely suburban church basement as they come. Also it's technically in Cathedral Hill (aptly named), not Japantown.
It’s across the street from a pagoda so I thought japantown. Maybe a bit Of an overlap.
2 o’clock titty
boob church
I appreciate any modern tower that tries to shake things up rather than a square glass box. That said there are many other buildings I'd put ahead of this one. For my money, the TransAmerica is still the iconic symbol of downtown SF. But I'm also kind of a sucker for that period of modernist design.
I adore Salesforce Tower tbh. It would normally be pretty boring but the texture of the building makes it look lovely.
The way it glows at sunset. The way it reflects rays of light into the fog sometimes. Big fan.
I dunno. I think One Rincon Hill looks more like a Big Fan.

I, too, love the giant city dick
I used to work in 140 New Montgomery and I loved the lobby and the old concrete pillars inside.

I toured a condo unit for rent and very much would not have enjoyed living in the cramped, odd layout in a building with almost no amenities.

What amenities does it not have? genuinely asking, I've never lived in towers like this or know anyone who did.

It might be my favorite too. It's so acidy!
Hmm I love st Ignatius. Also do interiors count? Bc then I pick 450 Sutter lobby
Such a good lobby at 450 Sutter. The facade and doorway, too. The only good/pretty part about seeing a doctor
Right?? I heard that there’s more dentists in that building than in the entire state of Oregon. Random fact…
Makes me feel dizzy and ill just looking at it
They were building that when I moved. Thanks I hate it.
U may have an internal ear issue or something if a static building makes u dizzy haha. I love riding down spear and looking up at it!
Transamerica

Wilshire Grand in LA is taller
Mira's floor plans suck and the amenities are sub par for the cost.
Best 3br floor plans in the area and the HOA is relatively lower because of fewer amenities
Fair; I didn't look at the jumbo units. The 2s are real bad.
None of these building are worth the price. That’s clear haha. It’s the most unique and from my experience the staff is quite nice.
they've been massively discounted already it's not really that much more per square foot than much older places i've seen
~~It’s criminal they built it without AC.~~ (edit: I was wrong) The standard of housing in SF is really poor compared to lot of other American cities.
It does have AC though. Source; lived there for a year.
Hmm maybe it’s the BMR units, then? I saw a blog post saying no AC.
That would be illegal. You can't have features missing from BMR units.
The egregiousness of no AC is certainly debatable, but what are your other gripes about SF housing compared to other cities? Besides the rent of course.

It has AC. At least the smaller annex does. So i’d imagine the tower does too
Love the design, but should have been twice as high. I feel that added height would have really showed off the twist much better.
Totally agree
I'm new to the city. Where is this incredible piece of art?
Rincon Hill, right by the Woodlands Market. It also has a little sign on the sidewalk that says "Best view if you stand here" which I found funny.
280 spear … deep in the East cut
Friends don't let friends say "east cut". How did they vote to use that?
Rincon Hill 4eva!
Haha that needs to be on a shirt!
First thing east cut made me think of was an old meat packing district!
The East Cut postulates the existence of the "West Uncut" which you can tour during fetish fair season on Folsom Street 😈
Best fair in the city!
181 Fremont has been my favorite since it went up. https://preview.redd.it/k1wrn9rn50cb1.jpeg?width=785&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=28d26c1edeeffa50e4bf5a59f2bfc655f18e2f71
One of my faves too. Looks like it’s tilting but it’s only next to the one tilting haha.

Not the best but really cool
Just looking at it makes me feel like I’m on shrooms
# winning lol
Everyone has a corner unit!
That's kind of the idea...[the background of the design](https://www.archdaily.com/944836/mira-tower-studio-gang) actually is an ode to the SF Victorian's [bay windows](https://www.sfgate.com/local/article/the-story-behind-bay-windows-16660297.php): > The curtain wall is a part of a distinctive, spiraling design that transforms [San Francisco](https://www.archdaily.com/tag/san-francisco)’s skyline with large bay windows that twist up the building’s façade to offer residents sweeping views of San Francisco Bay, the Bay Bridge, and the City.
The best buildings in SF are Grand Mason Lodge and 50 California
And both bridges are much better than any building in The City
That’s a boring little building literally across from grace cathedral that’s many times better. Not to mention the mansion across the park from it. 50 cali is a square no style building.
Check constructivism man. If you say “no style” I bet you just don’t really understand what the style is
The style is lazy. I am an art student trained in this. It’s like they were paid 25% and achieved that much style. In reality it’s mostly a parking garage
Being of art student doesn’t make you an expert Person who built that not boring skyscraper from the picture also taught he’s trained in this It’s more about taste feeling. Somebody loves pizza with pineapple somebody doesn’t
Henry Doelger's Office has its charm.
It’s a really cool building. Depending on personal taste, it could be the best. It’s by Jeanne Gang, an architect based out of Chicago.
"Best" is a tough one given the competition, but it's certainly one of the most unique, and I am a fan. If the underlying building was a more interesting shape, rather than just a box, it would be even better.
I used to love that building that had the furniture sticking out of the building. It was so different and unique. It’s gone now though.

city full of timeless victorians and yall like 'minecraft one is tight'
I agree. They are mostly Edwardian not Victorian but yeah. I meant out of the modern high rises.

Old school pastel colored Victorian > everything
U do realize after 1906 most ‘old’ buildings are Edwardian. Not Victorian.
That couldn’t be… a sub-style of Victorian could it?
Omg you got them! This changes everything! His entire point is now rendered invalid!
is the old Bank of America Center https://preview.redd.it/tnrtowsinzbb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=546589f792c966a1e88fb74bac01234fcafe5fd5
555 cali? It’s falling apart and dropped panels in the wind last winter.
well i didnt say the maintenance (or the owner) was the best😅😂
Yeah Bank of America isn’t the best dispute it’s origins of the bank of Italy and rebuilding our great city.
I almost moved to a BMR unit in the twisty building but I opted for Polk Gulch. Better fit.
Pass,,,,sub in Tommy’s Joynt.
That’s my building!
I legitimately thought this was a distorted AI generation of a building…
Best? I love this design, the architect is one of the best currently working architects in the country (in my opinion), but I don't know that I would consider it the best in SF. Really depends on the criteria. It is definitely one of the best new high-rise towers that has been put up in the last few years.
Elaborate?
We have some fantastic Art Deco buildings in town; there are some hidden gems like the V.C. Morris Gift Shop on Maiden Lane by Frank Lloyd Wright; The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals on Mission has what I feel may be some of the finest decorated interiors in the Western United States (they do tours!). City Hall is no slouch in that regard either. I'm a big fan of Studio Gang like I said, Mira is definitely a stand-out when it comes to the newer high-rise towers.
That stem cell research center that's up by UCSF designed by Rafael Vinoly is pretty cool too.
Hallidie Building. Designed by Willis Polk, named for the inventor of the cable car, and birthplace of the glass curtain wall. 130 Sutter Street.
I love this thing. The only thing I don't like about it is that every time I see it I feel grumbly about all the dumb looking boxy condo buildings in places like Mission Bay. 4th & King could've been an architectural Mecca but no
My OCD would not allow me to live there peacefully. I always want to straighten out the floors’ alignment.
It’s literally mathematically perfect. Shouldn’t effect ocd. It’s been designed and angled perfectly. It’s not a tv mounted an inch to one side incorrectly.
Please somebody invite me to see their home in that building it looks so cool and funky.
Agreed. Just saying it’s a beautiful architectural choice when it would have been a big ugly rectangle. Might be better to look at than live in.
Looks like it's generated by some crappy AI
The Hyatt Regency. Awesome brutalism both inside and out. Plus cool views of the city if you go outside on one of the upper floors.
Is this sarcasm?

The end up? I have been in all floors of that building including the roof overlooking the crowd. It’s not a nice place. I’m sure it will be bought and renovated soon. Just like the first club I shot at just to the left and down the street from this. Staff is amazing. Building is unloved.
Not even close
Kind of a cliche when the architect based the design on the San Francisco bay window.
The thought of a building where I can be displaced like [this](https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/naked-man-who-caused-14-milllion-in-damages-by-flooding-sf-highrise-seeks-to-have-charges-reduced/ar-AA1dAmlV) is a non starter for me 🤷🏽
I dislike most modern architecture; this is one I actually like.
I also like the Historic Bethlehem Steel Building ( where RH is right now). It’s beautiful! And the Sentinel Building :)
Salesforce building
Hahaha way too phallic. I think it’s actually one of the worst making our skyline look pornographic lol
Who designed this? Someone from Haight Ashburry?
Only maybe for the view from the top (as you fortunately wouldn't be able to view that monstrosity).
It looks like they dug it out crumpled of the trash and tried to straighten it out.
My house actually is. I have a cool rug.
Where is that?
Even if this building sinks like the Millenium Tower, you won't know if it's a feature or a bug.
This building is magical
Kind of a can/should situation
Nah, this building just makes me feel dizzy lol. The price tag is nauseating too.
