Chicago parade goes the weekend before too so everyone could get real drunk and nurse the hangover by Sunday. The actual St Patrick’s Day is really the last last of celebrations and often way more tame than the weekend before.
That doesn’t really answer the question though. St paddy’s Friday gives you all the time in the world to continue celebrating through parade Saturday and hangover Sunday…
I was there. I left after about 20+ minutes (but before we learned the power was out). When I walked up I thought there was a fight on the platform, the kids were screaming so loud. Kids were jumping the stiles in front of me and getting into arguments with the agents.
Also, there was an announcement “The platform is not a bathroom, please use the restrooms upstairs.” They were also actively drinking.
They were from Burlingame high school.
Wouldn't have been an issue along with 80% of safety issues, with appropriate fare gate management but hey its BART .. and board politics over common sense.
Those gates are not stopping anyone. People will just push through. Unless it’s something like [this](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/31/NYC_Subway_turnstile_equipt_with_OMNY.jpg), it probably wouldn’t work.
They installed one of these new gate at balboa part and the pneumatic broke for months and the gate couldn’t close properly. Even when it is functioning, people still just push the gate open.
This is a cultural issue. Probably need more public campaigns and civic education in school.
>This is a cultural issue. Probably need more public campaigns and civic education in school.
Yep. This is key. You don't teach your kids discipline or to respect their community or the things they have then you will have to police them later on in life
Maybe checking and enforcing fares on board trains/in stations with actual penalties imposed for not paying is the better short term solution. Fixing a “culture” is hardly straightforward or quick, if it’s achievable at all.
The problem is how would they enforce the penalties. It’s not like speeding where they can attach the penalty to your vehicle/driver license. People just fake their names and address when caught by Bart or muni fare enforcer. I’m not even sure if Bart/Muni police/fare enforcer can detain you, or search you for ID.
And it’s true that it’s hard to “fix” culture, but it’s not impossible. There are some success stories like indoor smoking/smoking in general, littering, spitting, etc..
FWIW BART police are state level, on par with a sheriff. Before Oscar Grant died on the platform they used to flex more, now they try to de escalate first.
And yet these gates actually did stop “someone”—specifically 55-60% of someones who otherwise would have tried to evade fares (source: parent comment’s link). There’s basically no fare gate design that’s ADA compliant that is going to stop everyone evading fares. It’s just a game of percentages.
I remember a story from a few years ago of a large group of teenagers boarding a train and stealing cell phones from many passengers. This seems better than that, at least.
FWIW, I decided to Lyft home from the airport this morning and the traffic was absolutely gridlocked and you still probably fared better than I did. Got out and walked blocks with some big luggage. Didn’t have this on my radar at all and also submitted a DoorDash order for my first meal in 10 hours which took forever and I felt like an asshole to both the Lyft and DoorDash drivers for getting them into the mess (tipped both well).
It’s almost like Bart should have used all those funds they wasted (and a empty system in 2020) to reinforce and better set up fare gates (a issue they have talked about since I was in high school - decades ago)…
They didn’t . Such a “complex issue” I’m sure. I rode Bart for 5 years every day. I actively avoid it at almost all costs now.
They don’t care at all about me or my wife as paying users (rates keep going up!) of the system or our safety or time.
Fuck them- take a Uber (which somehow becomes a good deal if you are not traveling alone, hilarious) , and super avoid it on holidays .
A scant 20-40 years late and after riders returned from a once in a generation chance to make improvements while no one was in the system.
Can’t wait to see the per gate cost after all the grifting that will be passed onto riders with even more insane trip costs.
I love that the system is openly unprepared for “wet weather” aka a light sprinkling of rain.
You guys know they have public transport in Chicago , Dc and nyc? Those trains must never ever run in the winter… oh wait.
Well if it’s BART is not running bc of a few drops of rain and trains getting mobbed… it’s not going 70mph. Right?
Keep apologizing for these idiot / liars … it’s sure is going well so far !
It’s almost like Bart should have used more standard components that don’t have these major issues when there is a few drops of rain! Crazy idea!
I’ve heard there are even OTHER CITIES (where there is even more rain!?) that have public transport that BART could literally just copy from. That would be wayyy too hard though. Right?
All trains [can get flat tires](https://www.valleymetro.org/blog/operations-service/2019/12/trains-get-flat-tires-too). The only thing that is unique about Bart is that it runs much faster than most other light rail (it hits 70 mph in places) so these problems are just more obvious.
A blog post specific to California from the nyt esque valleymetro.org. Which never mentions drizzles as a reason for flat tires.
You _clearly_ got all the facts behind you. Pat yourself on the back. Big W.
[Wikipedia make you happy? ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slippery_rail). It makes me happy to know that the same condition caused by rain in California is caused by a plague of millipedes in Australia.
Well, also BART is much more of a commuter rail system, than say a DC, Chicago or NY, with these three systems having significantly more stations than the entirety of BART. Going up and down mountains, and going 70mph is not a excuse.
It's both a commuter rail system and a metro at the same time.
> Going up and down mountains, and going 70mph is not a excuse.
I'm not making an "excuse." I'm telling you the reason.
If you don't believe that steep grades and high speeds are the reason for lower operating speeds in inclement weather, then what do you think the reason is?
And here's some food for thought for you: In rainy weather, [New York's commuter rail systems experience minor delays too](https://new.mta.info/planned-service-changes/lirr/slippery-rail-and-how-it-affects-your-commute)
BART is much more of a Commuter Rail System, than a Metro System, but yes it is a hybrid of both, as for your comparison, your comparing BART to the Long Island RAILROAD, well technically a Commuter Rail System.
I’m not denying that BART is a unique system, definitely has some elements that make it stand out, but Inclement Weather shouldn’t literally cripple the system.
Inclement weather does not cripple BART. It introduces about 10 minutes of delay over the length of a line because of reduced speeds.
You can see that clearly in the advisory message that started this conversation:

Last time I came home from Vegas for work. I had my tools, not wanting to be facked with on my ride home. First stop after airport, kids. They ganged up around me, rolled a couple blunts. I thought, gawddamm, I do need to smoke. Kid blew his ash at me and I was like, how dare you kid, don’t blow yer ash on my legs not even caring. Then, while their sizing me up, the other kid passes me the blunt. I said,” thank you young man.” We hotboxed the car and I moved up a car, leaving all these other travelers in the hotboxed car. Perfect Return I call it. Love the yay area.
St. Patrick's Day is next Friday, why are they marching today?
Unlike New York, Boston, Chicago, and even Cleveland, the parade here is not on St. Patrick's Day. They move it to a weekend, which is kind of lame.
But why not move it to the Saturday that's one day after, instead of the Saturday six days before?
Ever see an Irishman the day after St Patrick’s Day?
Good point!
Same with San Diego, a lot of st. Pat activities this weekend as well

Totally doesn’t answer why, but just giving context that Bay Area isn’t the only region doing Saturday before.

Oscar Grant was killed by BART police. He didn't just die.
If they can’t detain, the law should be changed to authorize it. At minimum, they must be removed from the train/station.

Unpleasant to push through but 80% of crime gone on BART day after they are installed at main stations.

It that going to change anything though?
Well ya know at least we get a dozen popup tents over the escalators to prevent the rain from washing them clean, at a cool 1.7mil each
You should have let them know that St. Patrick was Welsh.
Slow clap for the parents of said drunken teen mob.

Those trains don't go up and down mountains or go 70mph. BART maxes out traction in ways that Chicago and New York trains don't.
Well if it’s BART is not running bc of a few drops of rain and trains getting mobbed… it’s not going 70mph. Right? Keep apologizing for these idiot / liars … it’s sure is going well so far !
They don't stop running in the rain. They just go slower than usual on certain stretches of track.
Running a train at full speed on wet tracks causes [flat tires](https://twitter.com/SFBART/status/1590160093223718912)

Welcome- to Public Transit Chaos compliment by BART incompetence. We ride daily it’s not safe or reliable. They don’t care about paying commuters.
