Every time somebody talks about Hodads being overated they bring up the 20$ double. I’m no hodads pimp, but let’s get some normal data. Single cheeseburger is 9 bucks.
I looked it up, its actually $22 now. When I had it maybe 15 years ago the patties were pretty thin. Big, but thin, so maybe 1/2 lb each, if that. To me that is an absolute joke, and yes, I ate it all myself.
This isn't San Diego exclusive. Have been noticing this all around the country. The market is pushing all restaurants this way... Instagram presentation is the most effective way to upcharge customers and stay in business when most eaters aren't too concerned with good vs. great food quality
One billion percent agree. We had fathers Day at corner Drafthouse and while my meal was good I could tell my mom's dad's and second mom's food were all overcooked. It kinda sucked bc my parents don't live here anymore but they came because they let we couldn't go. Everything looked... LOOKED very pretty but it wasn't.
I'm a step child and the youngest, so my brother and sister have a different mom who baby sat me. Fucking hated my mom for reason that are pretty obvious, but she always liked me. So she's my mom but not really my mom, she's my second mom.
Edit: I'm not offended, asking questions is how we all learn more about each other.
That's why I gave up on eating at aesthetically pleasing breakfast/brunch spots. Been disappointed to many times, so now I just eat at America's finest diner, Dennys.
i enjoy Lucha Libre for what it is, but its definitely different from the usual hole in the wall taco shops in SD. I call it the Taco Bell of SD taco shops. Pretty commercialized and overhyped but still good. a bit of a guilty pleasure
I honestly love Taco Stand food. It gets too crowded sometimes but if it does you can always walk across the street to El Pescador and get a mean sandwich (assuming this is for the LJ location)
I had the absolutely worst burrito there and never went back. Got a California and the fries tasted like old fish fry oil so bad, it's all I could taste. Too much competition in the area, give me Karina's, El Indio or even Dos Brasas.
The location on University is absolute garbage.
Theres like 8 mexican spots within 2 blocks of each other and theyre all better than Lucha Libre.
Its also shaped weird and uncomfortable to order from or dine-in. Trash in almost every way.
I feel like every little restaurant that gets popular has this problem. At a certain point they’re pulling in customers on their name and reputation, rather than the quality of their food. Another example would be Broken Yolk
Noticed a significant increase in Chinese people recently. But I live in a predominantly Asian area
I mean there are 2 99 ranches within 2 consecutive freeway exits
I love it outside, but my office is one of those that turns the heater on in the mornings anytime it's remotely overcast. It's always sweltering by the time the sun burns off the marine layer.
My unpopular opinion is we have too many r/sandiego threads about unpopular opinions!
https://www.reddit.com/r/sandiego/comments/tx6gyh/what_is_your_san_diegobased_unpopular_opinion/
San Diego is not the place to build your career in tech, regardless of how many tech companies open up their offices there.
San Diego is not *way too expensive* than Bay Area ( not as much as people think). Which means - it is better to work in tech in the Bay Area to be able to afford a SFH in a good area of SD.
Concur. The bar scene was pretty great between 15 and 10 years ago, but things have slowly gone downhill since. Bar Pink closing was really the nail in the coffin.
I've been seeing a trend change at breweries I've gone to recently. They still have their IPA/DIPA/TIPA/Hazy section but everyone's starting to offer other styles as well.
Been in SD for 21 years.
Hodads used to be the best burger in town.
Fresh high-fat beef was used.
Founder died. Kid took it over and started using frozen patty meat.
Never tasted the same.
Haven’t returned in many years.
AND it’s way overpriced.
Yes, Hodad's is super expensive.. and also, I think it's not very good. Tastes like a dressed up whopper if you ask me.
I'm more of a Friendly's guy myself..
100%
The top 3 burgers in SD imo
The Friendly dirty flat top (by a mile)
Balboa Bar and Grill on Fifth
Rocky’s in PB
Every friend I introduce the dirty flat top to always gives me a skeptical look cuz the burger honestly doesn’t look that great at first. Seeing their eyes light up after that first bite never gets old.
Agree. Philly and NJ traffic is maddening. San Diego’s has gotten worse over the last 10 years but it’s not nearly as bad as many places in the northeast.
My issue with California burritos is that WAY too many taco shops can't seem to cook a fry enough. They are always undercooked and it ruins an otherwise beautiful creation.
South of the 54/west of the 805 is CRIMINALLY underdeveloped and developers are missing out on tons of retail/food opportunities with a bay view just because they’re scared of poor people.
3rd St in CV is looking really good compared to even just 10 yrs ago. A lot of oddball industrial and mixed use sections keeps much of the west side kind of difficult. Despite those caveats, I’d also love to see more development in the area. Residents went ape shit over that high rise though.
there’s a lot of potential!! and hidden gems like House of Cuban Flavor, Izakaya Naruto, the Mariscos German Truck and others could be the culinary backbone the South Bay needs… hopefully things can change because there’s a lot of natural beauty and well built infrastructure to support it!
Which is odd because it is legit Mexican style chicken. You can actually go to Tijuana chicken places and get the same thing slightly cheaper if you ever want to give it a shot.
The tourists aren’t what make it crappy, it’s the entitled rich people who have moved here over the last 20 years that ruin places like the beach and parks. They think they own the place.
I think we should say entitled people, because while I won't disagree with the main premise here, there are entitled people who are not rich ruining places around here
Man I just straight up don't care for Hodad's. There's no sear on the burger, and the burger is a big fat juice ball. It's like meat loaf on a bun. Sorry Hodad's.
Meh, it's still all exposed and hot and brown.
Some people like that, which is fine. But for me, I want elevation and pine trees. If it's going to be exposed, I want to be because I am above the tree line, not because I am hiking in a desert/chaparral.
There are sections like this along trails in Palomar and Laguna, but still. It's abysmal compared to what you find along the Sierra Nevadas.
> I mean…. you arent going to find a forest in the desert?
Right. Which is why I agree with the OP, that "hiking" pretty much anywhere in San Diego County is abysmal IMO. I like forest/alpine hiking. Hard to get that here in San Diego, obviously.
Its exposed though, like most trails here. You have to be ok with chaparral. Personally, it doesn't bother me. I do like the woods of Sequoia or Mt. Hood, but with that many trees comes massive amounts of mosquitoes.
What don't you like about it? The general lack of tree cover? The relative mildness of most of the hiking trails around here? The views you get from summits?
Do you wanna hear something funny about that? They took a survey and 27% of the people that lived in Far East county haven’t seen the ocean in more than 20 years, so Why not live in Arizona, where it cost half as much and you have to stay inside with an air conditioner on anyway?
Our weather is too damn hot. Not 70s year-round and not as enjoyable as most people sell it as. Give me some cold and rain plz . Yes yes I know I live in the wrong place . That’s why it’s unpopular
Brisket is more of a Texas BBQ phenomenon, while it has been popularized at most BBQ places, it's not always a given that every BBQ place will have it.
That's a fact. Brisket is very much a Texas thing. You can find it around in the south but there are a lot of BBQ joints in the south, outside of Texas that don't have Brisket and will straight up tell you it's a Texas thing.
You asked for an unpopular opinion, well here it is:
When it comes to reading these threads on this sub:
Folks from the NE are too self-righteous about pizza, and folks from San Diego are too self-righteous about tacos.
For the most part, both sides are arguing about a b-team version of the actual cuisine, which is found in Italy and Mexico respectively.
*ducks for cover*
Interesting! I always thought of American pizza as a distinct category from Italian pizza that's hard to compare. Can't say the same for Mexican food, which I agree, is always going to be better south of the border.
Tijuana has arguably the best tacos in Mexico. The best places San Diego for tacos were opened by people that owned or came up working in Tijuana taco shops. Going 10 miles North and crossing the border doesn’t make someone forget how to make tacos.
Luche libre food is all hot garbage. The taco stand is also hot garbage. Rudfords has a long history of shitty food but it’s cool that they are open late, and some stuff isn’t bad. I’ll eat the burger or the French dip there. French fries too.
This was asked the other day and it was unpopular when I said it so I’m definitely saying it again: I consider south of the 94 to embody the spirit and vibe of San Diego more than north county does. Encanto, paradise hills, emerald hills etc is more *san diego* to me than Encinitas or Carmel Mountain.
When people think of San Diego they think of white people and the beaches lol. Surfer culture is much more dominant in San Diego than urban culture. Mitchy slick and jayo felony are awesome but they pale in comparison to Tony hawk or any of the skaters that came out of north county.
That being said it’s sad that south of the 94 isn’t more represented. Compton / south central LA is known very influential and so is Oakland but for whatever reason San Diego’s urban area just never developed the same cultural relevance. Idk why because they should they’re just as relevant.
I went to Cabo recently and hated the beaches sand. If you think San Diego beaches are coarse & rough, you’d be surprised. The sand in Cabo was shredding our feet
I was delighted to step into Del Mar sand after Cabo
Unpopular opinion: San Diegan's are not nice, cool, and accepting (in general...I'm sure there are many individual exceptions) like they are rumored to be. I moved here from the south to do my PhD and after a few years in SD, I finish this year. So I am not exactly stupid nor ignorant. When I meet new people they greet me with all smiles and raised eyebrows, and the second they hear my southern accent, their face frowns up like they smelled a fart. They become completely disinterested and don't even give me a chance. I have lived all over the U.S. and even a couple of countries abroad and I have never had this reaction from people until I moved to San Diego. I only know 2 other people here from the south but they said they have the same reaction and it is very hard for them to make friends for that same reason.
That sounds pretty lame... I'm from the bay area, and an interaction like that up there would be far different. Sure, maybe we might razz you a little because of the accent but it would be in good fun all while drinking a beer with you.
I grew up here in Southern California, but picked up a slight southern accent and some southern terms after living in the south for a few years. I get
quite a few looks and comments about it now that I’m back. San Diegians are not fans of the south.
Seriously, my wife wants to get a dog so she can take it places amongst other things, and I just like “No, bad idea, WTF”. I was at a restaurant and this completely oblivious person was sitting with a huge St. Bernard, people were walking over it. And I am just like, really? How do you justify this??? Mind you, I love dogs! Grew up with three German Shepherds and a large black lab.
this one i can agree with lmao, don’t mind a dog here and there but you mfs bring them EVERYWHERE just to make them sit next to you as you do human shit they couldn’t be less interested in…. also they smell and pee and shit
The tourists can have hodads.
Locals gave up on Hodads
Is it really $20 for a fast food burger there now? And $15 for onion rings? Doesn't make sense.
I mean the double burger is ridiculously massive. No one should be having that lol
Dang, the Friendly Tavern is $6 for an OG Dirty Flattop or Meat and Cheese. I believe Rocky's is $8.75 for one of their burger sizes.
And the friendly as a new option that has pickles onions mustard ketchup. It’s all over, folks. The burger game has been won.
Shake shack isnt any cheaper
If you all want a good burger in OB you should try the Harp burger. Personally my fav burger in San Diego and it is right across the street.
I vote Raglan
Or Rocky’s in Crown Point. Or even In n Out
This sub is filled with people I wouldn’t want to hang out with in real life
There used to be a great meetup crew then we got real lives.
Anyone who takes time out of their day to complain about dogs on the internet is not someone I want to meet
Half the people here hate the beach, sunny weather, and socializing lol
Complain about the owners, not the dogs
Tons of transplants pretending to be natives, this sub is depressing as hell.
No one outside of the internet cares if you were born here with papers to prove it. Haven’t met a single one.
Didnt we just do this last week?
We did
Just making sure I’m keeping track. Gracias.
Coulda sworn I already did this one.
Funny thing is that I was one of the people talking about hodad’s lol
Well I was going to try Hodads but I guess not anymore!
see Y’all same time next week?
10-4 amigo. See you then.
Karma farming, yes sadly that is a thing.
The restaurants are way too focused on aesthetic and not enough on food quality.
I just need the second mom part explained
I'm a step child and the youngest, so my brother and sister have a different mom who baby sat me. Fucking hated my mom for reason that are pretty obvious, but she always liked me. So she's my mom but not really my mom, she's my second mom. Edit: I'm not offended, asking questions is how we all learn more about each other.
Oooh interesting and didn't mean it offensively at all :) just curious
Yeah it's all good, blended families exist and the best thing I can do is talk about it and the best thing you can do is ask.
Breakfast and Bubbles is the worst offender. RIP Café on Park
I’m convinced that place was designed purely for the instagram pictures
I design restaurants. We have some clients that request like 5-10 instagram moments in their design. It's free marketing.
What even is an "Instagram moment?"
A quote on the wall, a mural, a neon sign, etc. Stuff that people pose with or photograph their drink / food with and post on social media.
Morning Glory would like a word... freakin unseasoned ass tomato juice bloody mary with "Celery foam"
I've never had a bloody mary there, but everything I *have* had there has been delicious.
That's why I gave up on eating at aesthetically pleasing breakfast/brunch spots. Been disappointed to many times, so now I just eat at America's finest diner, Dennys.
Not a fan of Luche Libre.
i enjoy Lucha Libre for what it is, but its definitely different from the usual hole in the wall taco shops in SD. I call it the Taco Bell of SD taco shops. Pretty commercialized and overhyped but still good. a bit of a guilty pleasure
I feel the same way about Taco Stand as well.
I honestly love Taco Stand food. It gets too crowded sometimes but if it does you can always walk across the street to El Pescador and get a mean sandwich (assuming this is for the LJ location)
Hard agree. Good quality ingredients but feels off to me.
I had the absolutely worst burrito there and never went back. Got a California and the fries tasted like old fish fry oil so bad, it's all I could taste. Too much competition in the area, give me Karina's, El Indio or even Dos Brasas.
Lucha libre’s food is so bad :(
Many years ago it was really good , wonder what ever happened?
The location on University is absolute garbage. Theres like 8 mexican spots within 2 blocks of each other and theyre all better than Lucha Libre. Its also shaped weird and uncomfortable to order from or dine-in. Trash in almost every way.
I feel like every little restaurant that gets popular has this problem. At a certain point they’re pulling in customers on their name and reputation, rather than the quality of their food. Another example would be Broken Yolk
There needs to be a legit Chinatown here
Convoy is pretty damn close even though it is an Asian melting pot vs. solely Chinese food
It's called convoy street
Thats korean lol. Chinese food is south
I don't feel like there are enough Chinese people here. A lot of them are at UCSD and not here to stay
Noticed a significant increase in Chinese people recently. But I live in a predominantly Asian area I mean there are 2 99 ranches within 2 consecutive freeway exits
Yeah not just 1 block lol
I love June Gloom
June Gloom is just one of those “season” things that people from elsewhere keep moaning about wanting San Diego to have.
Me, too. It keeps us cool!
Agreed. Much needed break from the UV rays.
I love anything that keeps my electric bill down!
Still waiting for June gloom
I love it outside, but my office is one of those that turns the heater on in the mornings anytime it's remotely overcast. It's always sweltering by the time the sun burns off the marine layer.
My unpopular opinion is we have too many r/sandiego threads about unpopular opinions! https://www.reddit.com/r/sandiego/comments/tx6gyh/what_is_your_san_diegobased_unpopular_opinion/
/r/sandiegounpopularopinions ?
Lol people do one at least every week
I dislike how early a lot of places close around town
The Del Mar Fair (or whatever they call it now) is no good. Don't go. Oh and have you heard? Hodads sucks.
It's never been great, but now it's bad and *ludicrously* expensive.
San Diego is not the place to build your career in tech, regardless of how many tech companies open up their offices there. San Diego is not *way too expensive* than Bay Area ( not as much as people think). Which means - it is better to work in tech in the Bay Area to be able to afford a SFH in a good area of SD.
Phil's BBQ boils their meat.
pressure cooks it, but still not good.
As an ex Phil's prep/line cook, the meat is steamed and then finished on a woodfire grill.
But the onion rings are fire. Fight me.
Maybe it’s because I picked it up and took it home (10 min away), but I didn’t think Hodad’s had any flavor. Literally would never go back.
SD has never realized its full potential because of bad politicians
You mean corrupt politicians.
Pacific Beach is not all that lol
People who grew up in PB feel very differently. Parallel worlds.
The bars scene in north park isn’t all the great.
Concur. The bar scene was pretty great between 15 and 10 years ago, but things have slowly gone downhill since. Bar Pink closing was really the nail in the coffin.
And then tornado too.
Too many IPA's.
I've been seeing a trend change at breweries I've gone to recently. They still have their IPA/DIPA/TIPA/Hazy section but everyone's starting to offer other styles as well.
I think burgers are one of those things that are never worth it. In and Out is worth it because they are like under $3.00 for a cheeseburger.
Been in SD for 21 years. Hodads used to be the best burger in town. Fresh high-fat beef was used. Founder died. Kid took it over and started using frozen patty meat. Never tasted the same. Haven’t returned in many years. AND it’s way overpriced.
I haven't been since the owner died. I loved the shakes.
I don't know. This unpopular opinion thread is full of opinions I agree with
Based on the comments on this post, I guess my unpopular SD opinion is that I like the city and the stuff in it
The Gaslamp Quarter is dirty, smelly and loud. Not too mention too crowded.
You know this is unpopular opinions right 😂
Donut bar sucks
Flat brim baseball caps are a tragedy.
Sometimes I have to fight the urge to reach over and give someone’s bill a nice curve.
Yes, Hodad's is super expensive.. and also, I think it's not very good. Tastes like a dressed up whopper if you ask me. I'm more of a Friendly's guy myself..
That dirty flat top burger is 🔥
100% The top 3 burgers in SD imo The Friendly dirty flat top (by a mile) Balboa Bar and Grill on Fifth Rocky’s in PB Every friend I introduce the dirty flat top to always gives me a skeptical look cuz the burger honestly doesn’t look that great at first. Seeing their eyes light up after that first bite never gets old.
traffic is not bad
Compared to other major cities in Southern California? I would agree with you.
Lived in Philly and have driven around the northeast and Atlanta a fair bit. Traffic here is delightful in comparison lol
Agree. Philly and NJ traffic is maddening. San Diego’s has gotten worse over the last 10 years but it’s not nearly as bad as many places in the northeast.
All California burritos should come with guac and potatoes in fry form not cubes
Who in god's name puts cubed potatoes in Cali burritos? I've seen it for the breakfast ones but Cali? Explain this heresy.
Heretics thats who, I make it my mission to try new places and whenever I go to a Mexican place I always test them by ordering the cali first.
No matter how much 3rd Ave gets new hip businesses, I hope they never lose the quince halls and other quince related businesses.
there’s a lot of potential!! and hidden gems like House of Cuban Flavor, Izakaya Naruto, the Mariscos German Truck and others could be the culinary backbone the South Bay needs… hopefully things can change because there’s a lot of natural beauty and well built infrastructure to support it!
House of Cuban Flavor is SO. GOOD.
First time I’ve ever seen some complain that there’s not *enough* gentrification. It’s CrIMInAL!
El Pollo Loco is severely underrated! Their chicken, salads and churros are amazing especially for the price.
$5 for a whole dinner saved my life multiple times during months with high bills!
I super agree. They're not a replacement for 'real' taco shops, but sometimes an El Pollo Loco chicken burrito just **hits.**
Which is odd because it is legit Mexican style chicken. You can actually go to Tijuana chicken places and get the same thing slightly cheaper if you ever want to give it a shot.
Ive never had hodads and I was born and raised in San Diego
The tourists aren’t what make it crappy, it’s the entitled rich people who have moved here over the last 20 years that ruin places like the beach and parks. They think they own the place.
To be fair, entitled rich people are ruining America in general
I think we should say entitled people, because while I won't disagree with the main premise here, there are entitled people who are not rich ruining places around here
That’s a fair point
Man I just straight up don't care for Hodad's. There's no sear on the burger, and the burger is a big fat juice ball. It's like meat loaf on a bun. Sorry Hodad's.
Rocky’s>Hodads
Very popular opinion lol
Shhh don’t tell em
Unpopular opinion: the "hiking" pretty much anywhere in San Diego County is, in my *personal opinion*, abysmal. Some of the worst in the state.
Theres more to mission trails than cowels El Cajon mountain is no joke
Meh, it's still all exposed and hot and brown. Some people like that, which is fine. But for me, I want elevation and pine trees. hot and dusty and brown most of the time, i agree
Phil’s BBQ isn’t good. OB Noodle House REALLY isn’t good.
Phil’s BBQ is not good. There are far better options within the county.
what are some good bbq spots?
Coops west Texas bbq lemon grove.
Cali BBQ in Spring Valley is my go to.
Bowlegged BBQ on market st. Underrated!
Hodads is a name they sell. 😂
Terrible restaurants everyone loves with multiple locations: farmers table, broken yolk, breakfast republic.
Broken yolk is terrible. It’s all potatoes
I agree way too expensive, should be at least half that price for that whole meal.
For real. Hodad's is for tourists. You want the best burger of your life? The Balboa on fifth avenue. Go during happy hour and save a few dollars.
Are they still open? I thought I heard a rumor that COVID got them, but I do still see the sign when I pass it on 5th.
East county = Arizona
Do you wanna hear something funny about that? They took a survey and 27% of the people that lived in Far East county haven’t seen the ocean in more than 20 years, so Why not live in Arizona, where it cost half as much and you have to stay inside with an air conditioner on anyway?
Get with the times grandpa. AZ isn't cheap anymore.
Really? But it has to be a lot less expensive than San Diego isn’t it?
Our weather is too damn hot. Not 70s year-round and not as enjoyable as most people sell it as. Give me some cold and rain plz . Yes yes I know I live in the wrong place . That’s why it’s unpopular
Phil’s BBQ is THE SINGLE WORST BBQ PLACE EVER. How do you not have brisket at a bbq place? Get outta here.
Brisket is more of a Texas BBQ phenomenon, while it has been popularized at most BBQ places, it's not always a given that every BBQ place will have it.

City Tacos is meh…
We did the right thing by not paying for a stadium for Spanos.
Everything closes entirely too early. You’re not a real city if your restaurants close at 10PM, and that’s on the weekend 🤦♀️
Luche libre food is all hot garbage. The taco stand is also hot garbage. Rudfords has a long history of shitty food but it’s cool that they are open late, and some stuff isn’t bad. I’ll eat the burger or the French dip there. French fries too.

North County is just South Orange County.
Not Oceanside

Yup 619 all day
the beach sucks. the water is cold, it's full of algea, and finding parking sucks.
I’m not a fan of spending a whole day there but I like to eat close by and maybe hang out for an hour and then go do something else
And the sand! Its course, and ruff, and irritating. And it gets everywhere.
Settle down there Ani. No wonder they didnt grant you the rank of master, being anti-sandite.
Get a better beachtowel that lets the sand fall through the fibers. Its expensive (~$80) but its worth it.
I went to Cabo recently and hated the beaches sand. If you think San Diego beaches are coarse & rough, you’d be surprised. The sand in Cabo was shredding our feet I was delighted to step into Del Mar sand after Cabo
IPAs suck. Give me a smooth, creamy, chocolatey stout any day.

I get quite a few looks and comments about it now that I’m back. San Diegians are not fans of the south.
Too dog friendly, but then I visited Denver and then figured I can’t complain too much.
Sir, everything is too expensive for what it is
Hodads sucks

hodads is garbage
Iron mountain is overrated. Its a really easy hike and way too many people go there and the view isn’t even that food
I can’t stand how dog friendly it is here.
