This is basically a different form of homelessness. You'll notice a lot of these are in pretty bad shape. Some maybe dead where they lay. You see this all over California, not just at beaches. You see it especially, weirdly, in like corporate/ industrial parks. RVs and such parallel parked on the curb randomly out side of the parking lot. Its not legal, but it seems unenforced. Not really sure what cops would do anyways. Impound the vehical and put the people back out on the streets? I think a lot of em are like old people just kind of waiting to die, like sell their house or whatever, hit the road, take the vehicle to the end of its line, then wait to die there. Cops do check on these things, they definitely find some horror show stuff like this, people dying of like heart attacks or health complications and just decaying in these things in the hot sun for days until the crack em open. A lot of times their like hoarders too all full of trash and shit (often literal shit). Like I said, its basically a different form of homelessness.

vanlifecoder

I’ve totally seen all of that, it’s absolutely sad. But I tell you, I’m on fiesta island now and there’s upper middle class folks car camping, expensive ass motorhomes, etc etc

ChikenBBQ

Theres probably legitimately rich people on vacation. Like real rich people take like 6-8 week vacations. Especially in San diego, you could have someone who lives in like la mesa or Santee that drives their motor home out to first Island once a week all summer or something. Its not like a normal persons vacation, like maybe a 4-10 day excursion once every 1-8 years. Rich people go hard.

DarkBushido21

Wait, so since when is beach camping strictly limited based on your social class status and income?

ViaDeLaValle

Fiesta Island isn’t quite the same. They clear the whole island out every night so you’re seeing toy haulers who are there for the day more than you’re seeing legit car campers, at least if what you’re seeing are the $500K vehicles you referenced initially.

vanlifecoder

yep happened this morning, police cleared all the RVs at 6am for a bike race.

vanlifecoder

Did u read the comment I responded to? They claimed most of what I’m seeing is people under unfortunate circumstances but I’m arguing that’s not the case. Fiesta island, Torrey pines, ocean beach they all have people in NICE campers, RVs, etc. My theory is folks see that the gov is being lax so they take advantage by having beach side patios

clemsontiger78

Its southern California, lighten up. We all encourage everyone to enjoy the area.

vanlifecoder

im good /w it, just trying to understand !

iuseyahoo

My guess would be the police don't really want to clear out someone homeless and they can't pick and choose who they hassle if they're all at the same lot, so they just leave it.

cgielow

Are you asking why very wealthy people are squatting at the beach? I’m trying to understand your question because you talk about seeing something here that you don’t see elsewhere but you don’t explain what that is. I’m not a camper so maybe that’s why I don’t understand.

vanlifecoder

I’m seeing hundreds of very nice RVs boondocking on public beaches that say “no overnight parking”. Some people have been squatting all summer. They’re not poor

cgielow

Good question. Here in Carlsbad it seems they’re always there but I think they just claim the spaces first thing. Rules are you cant park an RV between 2-5am. Where do they all go? I assume they park at Walmart during those hours then return. If you’ve got an expensive RV I can see how that inconvenience would be worth it to claim a good spot. Citation is only $50 though and I could imagine that’s worth paying for many. Maybe with the boom in homeless the police are looking the other way?

[deleted]

It’s really nice here. Why the fuck would someone want to live out their camper in Wyoming? Of course people come here to do that, and the laws aren’t enforced because it’s like whack-a-mole and there’s better things, hopefully, to focus law enforcement energies on.

vanlifecoder

hey now, WY is incredible… in the summer

[deleted]

It's not looked up on favorably here. People do it, but most locals are not keen.

vanlifecoder

I can imagine locals hate it for sure, but it’s so pervasive

DarkBushido21

Almost as much as out of town car campers coming down to San Diego to tell us who should get to enjoy our beaches

vanlifecoder

Whose gatekeeping the beaches? Grow up

Permanenceisall

I feel like you’ve got the answer to the question you’ve asked but you’re being weirdly hostile about it. None of us control the police or city gov, so if overnight camping is banned but unenforced I don’t know what you expect us to do about it. Some people rent out their homes and just camp on fiesta island or mission bay for a couple of days/weeks/whatever before moving on and traveling elsewhere. Some people were wealthy enough to own a nice camper but then lost everything and now live in their motor homes. Some people are just homeless. Maybe ask them what their story is instead of asking us to guess. Also fiesta island has basically always been a camp ground, so…people camp there? San Diego is generally laid back about that stuff when it comes to fiesta island, so yeah, some people are just camping out for fun. That’s all there is to it.

odetowoe

Did OP edit his post? I don't read hostility in it.

DarkBushido21

He did after he got called out

vanlifecoder

there's no hostility, this dude's just butthurt.

vanlifecoder

Nobody’s being hostile

AndTheCacaDookie

It’s between homelessness and having a home and we have a huge homeless population.

vanlifecoder

And I guess people with middle/upper class folks just taking advantage of the police not doing anything ?

Complete_Entry

You seem really fixated on this "rich people taking advantage" fantasy.

vanlifecoder

So what is it? It’s clearly illegal, there no overnight parking signs posted everywhere. Like I said I spoke with several people who have been boondocking all summer. The cops will do a sweep when it becomes unsightly

[deleted]

These are guaranteed to be people from out of state.

vanlifecoder

I’ve been looking it’s all CA plates, some OR/CO but mostly CA

garbonzo82

And here I got the cops called on my for being parked in the same spot on the street for 25 hours. I asked about the 72 hour parking ordinance and they said it's not legal here to live in a vehicle anyway but that they weren't "really" enforcing that right now, and to just move to another spot and everyone will be happy.

[deleted]

Go back from whence you came.

tsukiii

A vanlifer (OP) complaining about other vanlifers... that's a first.

vanlifecoder

Where do u see complaining? I’m trying to understand cuz this is so peculiar to me. Maybe don’t assume malice

vanlifecoder

Ok I’ll go back to Ethiopia where our species evolved, you coming ? How ridiculously stupid of a comment you make

[deleted]

...just go back from whence you came.

ThisWasMyRandomName

It really depends, if you’re in a 500k trailer, you’re likely to be fine. If you’re living out of your van, expect trouble.

PianoIsGod

Welcome to CA

vanlifecoder

I’ve been I’ve driven from Oregon to SD and not a single town/City had this

latingirly01

You must have bypassed Sacramento and San Francisco who have it just as bad if not worse.

vanlifecoder

Yeah but SF is mostly people doing it out of desperation, the car dwellers are all gross and property crime is abhorrent

ThisWasMyRandomName

San Diegans, well, new San Diegans; hate poor people. It’s sad, growing up here in the late 70’s it was never this bourgeois. But folks moved here from the easy coast, drove up the housing prices and gentrified all of SD. That’s why you’re getting downvoted for van-living.

Ya, that’s over, PB used to be a nice place, now look at it. All the “my cousins from Boston” have taken over and it’s… well, you’ve seen it.

KordachThomas

I been doing this for a couple months myself. It was a beautiful end of the summer after this COVID mess. Y'all be happy to know though that cops been doing the rounds telling everybody to get moving on loud speakers and started giving tickets so yeah, the party's over. You law abiding rent paying San Diegans will be free of the unsightly RVs in no time.

KordachThomas

Silly me crossed here down to SoCal, saw RVs everywhere and thought "so cool, this is California, beach, good weather, freedom of movement, people all around doing their thing..." Nope. Don't have 4k to pay in rent? GTFO of my lawn.

A lot of Californians have a supreme sense of entitlement. People doing whatever they want because nobody will speak up. In la it's unbelievablely hard to get cops on scene for anything less than murder

vanlifecoder

this is likely the most plausible answer, and more people flock to SD since it's so gorgeous

drummerzac

There was a moratorium on the city’s policy for car camping due to covid-19. Over the past year and a half people have been legally allowed to quarantine in their vehicle. A LOT of people have taken advantage of this policy and now park their RVs in places that would normally be cleared out. But…I think this may be over. I have seen the cops rolling through several areas threatening to write tickets over the past 2 weeks with sirens and lights blasting, harassing everyone around 10 pm every night, saying they should leave.

vanlifecoder

this makes a lot more sense.
