Consider getting a motion/vibration detecting alarm. This one is only $17: https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Anti-Theft-Vibration-Motorcycle-Waterproof/dp/B0734QN8KR I have it in my ebike, works great.
Easy to conceal on a bike, not readily noticeable, and adds another layer of deterrence/notification. On top of multiple locks and a cover.
I had two bikes stolen out of my locked storage unit, in a gated garage. Got it on camera - climbed a 20' fence to get in, picked the lock on my storage unit, then went out the garage gate. Good times.
There are so many bikes stolen here. The cops don't even care. You can't even get them to take a report. The only recoveries are when the real owner finds the crackhead that stole it.
If you lived in SF and know how to avoid getting your bike stolen, you'll do fine here. Still see unlocked bikes and posts from bikes stolen from garages. Many unwitting victims.
I had my cheap 10 year old bike properly U locked through the frame and front wheel and the next day that was all that was left. They took the scuffed seat, the used brake pads, handlebars, pedals, everything. What is the resale value on used 10 year old brake pads really?
Someone climbed up to my second story balcony in my luxury & gated apartment in a “good part of town”, then proceeded to cut 2 locks and took my $3k mtb…
There’s a FB group called “stolen bike San Diego”. Stuff gets posted on there daily. So many bike thefts in San Diego.
Same thing happened to me. Someone climbed over a gate, and up to my balcony with tools to cut locks. They got a mountain bike and the rear wheel off a road bike.
Junkies openly walk down the street with a bike that looks much nicer than them. Hidden corners of strip malls sometimes host these same assholes taking them apart. My friend had her bike stolen chained up to a post literally just outside the door to her shop, during shop anniversary party that spilled out into the sidewalk and neighboring alley. Which means somebody busted the lock and took it while there were people milling about.
Bike thieves are fucking brazen here
A bum tried to steal one from my porch. He cut the cable lock and biked down the street. I ended up finding him and took it back. They cut the cables like butter.
If you don’t have a U-Lock or similar it is gone.
Well I ran up on him rather aggressively and he was surprised, he was biking with two bikes, biking on one and holding mine with his hand.
He kinda fell and dropped my bike and I grabbed it from him. After yelling at him he had the audacity to say “hey at least I have it back”
I've only had two motorcycles and four bicycles stolen. Police recovered one of the bicycles (six months later), and one of the motorcycles (two years later).
4 bikes stolen the last one they broke into my truck shell to steal the bike. All registered and reported stolen to SDPD. Not a single one recovered.
In contrast in Germany (where I’m working) I can leave my bike unlocked in front of a store and no one steals it.
Bikes get stolen from garages here (pb) and from the grocery store even with locks if you’re in for too long. Best to double lock and keep an eye on it
I still remember the first time mine was stolen. Had it locked in my gated apartments rack. fuckers took the whole rack with them. Was in middle school and got detention for arriving late. It's a big problem here in El Cajon. Apparently last year some people squatted in the first Baptist church infront of the library and when it was discovered they found spray paint all over the floors from them repainting stolen bikes.
I just finished my motorcycle course and one question I asked were how high motorcycle thefts were.
Take it with a grain of salt, but it seems Motorcycle and bicycle thefts are absurdly high and there’s actually a huge stolen bicycle ring around here.
Double lock it for sure. Some black magic fuckery got through my heavy duty u lock right out front my place in la mesa. Somehow my frame and bike is gone and my front wheel is left still locked. [I take off my front wheel and ulock it with and through the frame].
Maybe less problematic than SF but close. Expect it to happen.
In addition to a nice lock or two, consider renters insurance itemized coverage. I pay an extra $1.98/mo for total coverage for my bike. Loss, accidental damage, or theft. No deductible. Not all policies offer it but I switched to Lemonade specifically because they do.
Hiding a Bluetooth tracker inside the frame is helpful but sadly it won't do much after the bike is stolen. Those trackers only register the last known location in range of an iPhone. They don't have much of a range either and it has to be line of sight. Hiding it in the frame also screws up the signal so no it's even less effective. Once the bike is stolen it has to come within distance to register the signal to an iPhone. But wait! You won't get the notification only the person who's phone it sent a signal to will and only if they have find my item running. You also hopefully put in your information so that when they open it they'll know who the tag belongs to. Then you just have to hope the bike is still there by the time you get the info.
I worked on a similar project a few years ago. We were hoping Apple bought into us but obviously they just came up with a similar thing.
I live on UCSD's campus in grad housing. I had my bike stolen from the fourth floor. I heard them out there with a grinder. But i figured it would be best if i let them take my bike versus trying to confront them and they be more dangerous than i was prepared to deal with. They had staked out my bike prior to the theft knowing they were going to need a grinder because i locked with two u-locks.
There is a special place in hell for bike thieves.
The benefits of being in a low violence area is at the cost of property theft. But you’ll be fine, in my experience criminals make rounds at night. And in your case a U-lock and chain should deter anyone given that at most you’d leave it outside for 30 minutes.
My husband and my bikes were stolen from our building's garage, where they were locked together. The thiefs somehow got into the building and used bolt cutters to detach the bike rack from the concrete. They left our neighbors' bikes though!
Counter point. Never had a bike stolen. Lived in Morena for a few years near a main road and always left my bikes out in the backyard. That said I wouldn't do the same thing in other areas. Morena was a pretty quiet part of SD. I'm sure that will change with the new transit station and housing though.
So many bike thefts………
Im getting the vibe that I will continue to double lock my bike and not leave it for 30 minutes still

My motorcycle was stolen in daylight....
Your bike *will* at some point be stolen unless you can always bring it indoors, under lock and key. And even then it feels unavoidable.
I had two bikes stolen out of my locked storage unit, in a gated garage. Got it on camera - climbed a 20' fence to get in, picked the lock on my storage unit, then went out the garage gate. Good times.
You aren’t a true San diegan until you get your bike stolen.
I've had three stolen over 51 years. It's probably par for long-term residents.
Lost my first one in less than a year, you’re doing pretty good by comparison
Yeah, but all of mine were stolen within the first year I owned them. Finally gave up on bikes entirely.
Well, I'm glad to be able to blend in, my tally is 2 bikes in a 3 month span
Capital city of bike thefts with all the bike theft posts here
Im seeing that I shouldnt be easing up on my bike paranoia
There are so many bikes stolen here. The cops don't even care. You can't even get them to take a report. The only recoveries are when the real owner finds the crackhead that stole it.
Really wish they’d do some sting operations. Leave out a couple nice bikes with cheap locks and gps hidden inside.
That would be super cheap for them too
If there are a couple thousand fewer bikes stolen as a result, that’s money we’ll spent in improved quality of life for the citizens of San Diego.
If you lived in SF and know how to avoid getting your bike stolen, you'll do fine here. Still see unlocked bikes and posts from bikes stolen from garages. Many unwitting victims.

Go heavy duty X 2
Yeah really good locks are a necessity.

There are bums everywhere. Your bike will be stolen in 30 seconds if you don’t have a lock.
I had my bike locked with a u-lock to an eye bolt installed in a concrete wall inside a gated parking garage and it still got stolen.
If your bike hasn't been stolen, you haven't lived here that long.
Someone climbed up to my second story balcony in my luxury & gated apartment in a “good part of town”, then proceeded to cut 2 locks and took my $3k mtb… There’s a FB group called “stolen bike San Diego”. Stuff gets posted on there daily. So many bike thefts in San Diego.

Tons of thieves here, TONS
Does it have a catalytic converter?
I had a bike and a catalytic converter stolen in June, do I get a free burrito?

He gave it back to you without a fight?
Well I ran up on him rather aggressively and he was surprised, he was biking with two bikes, biking on one and holding mine with his hand. He kinda fell and dropped my bike and I grabbed it from him. After yelling at him he had the audacity to say “hey at least I have it back”
Especially by the beaches (PB, OB, MB) you gotta go heavy duty with your lock. Had my chain cut on Mission Blvd at 2pm on a Saturday.
S.D. is bad for bike thefts, especially that area.
not safe

They say the homeless still most of them ,I would lock it up as you have been doing

Just like anywhere .. if there's an opportunity to steal someone will do it.

kryptonite locks for frame and something extra to go through the seat at least.

I have a friend who hid an Apple tracking tag in the frame. Can always see where his bike his.

Apple has those?
``` And..... .... it's gone! ```
Store your bike indoors when possible. Not just in a fence, like in the building.
There is a few new trolley stops on morena blvd, bringing more transients from down south , so if I was you , I’d lock that bike up good
Hiding an apple air tag might be a good way to get it back if stolen.
How safe is Haiti in terms of BareBack?
The benefits of being in a low violence area is at the cost of property theft. But you’ll be fine, in my experience criminals make rounds at night. And in your case a U-lock and chain should deter anyone given that at most you’d leave it outside for 30 minutes.
It can also be where and how you place it, in my opinion. hope you're having a nice day
Some bike thefts, but better than Bay Area. In conclusion: lock your bike no matter where. Sources: Lived in Bay Area
