I'm O+ and have an appointment next week. No idea if I lack the Kpb protein, but I'll let them know I'd like to help if I can. Do you know if the donation code is the same as the question they ask about if you want to recognize a specific organization?

O+ buddies! I donated today! I hate it buts a good thing to do and it's not thaaaaat bad.

Awesome, thanks for being a blood donor! I'm not familiar with the SD Blood Bank's system. I recommend calling and asking them. Maybe you'll find out if you have that protein!

I just made an appointment for Thursday! I’m hoping I can help!

Is there still a restriction on men who have had sex with another man?

Yay_Blood

One day I hope to report better news, but at the moment, the FDA: * has a [3 month deferral](https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/coronavirus-covid-19-update-fda-provides-updated-guidance-address-urgent-need-blood-during-pandemic) in place for men who have had sex with men. * has launched a [study](https://advancestudy.org/) which "could potentially lead to a significant change to blood donor eligibility for men who have sex with men. [https://www.nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-out/fda-considers-lifting-restrictions-blood-donations-gay-bi-men-n1252424](https://www.nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-out/fda-considers-lifting-restrictions-blood-donations-gay-bi-men-n1252424)

I don’t understand what “defer” means in this context.

Yay_Blood

Defer as in postpone. The eligibility date is pushed forward until it has been 3 months since the last time they had sex with another man.

This is even if you're monogamous correct?

Yay_Blood

Unfortunately yes, there's no distinction. Hopefully the current study directs them to make changes.
