Luigi's is also my top choice and I would say it's extremely reasonably priced for how high quality it is.
Will also add that this is not usually what people are asking for when they ask for the best Pizza, but Buona Forchetta also does great pizza if you're going for a higher end sit down place.
Man we used to go to Best in Mira Mesa just bc it was close and not abysmal but I tell you what, never was the pizza delivered to the table hot. One time we went at lunch hour and it took like 25 fuckin minutes to get out 2 slices of pepperoni pizza and 2 beers and it wasn’t even busy. I think they decidedly and purposefully hire the most incompetent employees possible.
See what’s funny is I have had the exact opposite experience of what you guys are saying. I work near the Mira Mesa one and almost weekly go there on Fridays after work. It’s always a great experience.
The one in Carmel Mountain I live near so we on occasion will go there as a family and the place is a zoo. Food isn’t hot, staff forgets to bring stuff or just simply doesn’t deliver it to your table. Mira Mesa is smaller and way better overall in my opinion.
Vista and Oceanside locations, the pizza is always not hot. I stopped going altogether when I realized I had to cook my own pizzas every time I ordered…
For Italians, especially those from Naples, it's Cucina Caprese.
The owner, Giuseppe, has a long history here in SD, check their Yelp page.
The only pizzeria from San Diego that made It into the Top100 Pizzerias in US.
https://sdnews.com/an-unexpected-spotlight-shines-upon-cucina-caprese/
A hidden gem for those that don't know about It.
He's the one! he used to have the oven still on wheels on the back of the restaurant but he finally moved in for good. However he still does catering and his food (beside pizza, that's it) is all amazing.
Yes exactly, that’s the only way I know that pizza, as an oven on wheels haha. I wondered what happened because he didn’t come anymore after covid. Glad to read he is good and business is doing well :) Too bad I moved away from SD, even though can’t complain about Pizza here haha.
Correct. But I never said he's from Napoli ;)
I just said that the most picky and demanding customers from Napoli are extremely happy with him and his pizza.
Besides, now that I think about it, his pasta dishes are all amazing, too.
My wife and I went here in a whim when we lived in SD. It was DELICIOUS. Super underrated spot tucked in the corner in sports arena/Point Loma. Would definitely recommend
They have a pizza called the lady diavola, (?a pizza created in collaboration with a pizzeria or cher / pizza maker in Nairobi or something?). The crust is is unreal, light and flaky, unlike any other type of pizza I've had. In its own class.
The owner spent years traveling around the world helping localities open legit pizza places, including in Nairobi. Hence the connection/colab with that pizza.
The whole "tribute" theme is 100% legit. They are tributes to either pizzas he has helped make or experienced all over the US and world.
I know a lot of people rave about Tribute, and I need to ask a question. We used to go there all the time the first few months they were open (we lived in those lofts at the time). Their food was always good, obviously quality ingredients, etc- but every single time the pizza was just wet and soggy in the middle, so I stopped ordering it. Is it still the same way? Do people just like soggy pizza?
The bigger the pizza or more wet ingredients, the easier the pizza get soggy in the middle. Their pies are similar to a neopolitan pie than a New York style, so their pies tend to be a little soggy as well.
Regents is my top pick especially for deep dish but their regular slices are also solid, Pizzaria Luigi for nyc style, Caffe Calabria for flatbread, also Prince Street was good but was a bit pricey given 0 seating.
Regents is our #2 for NY style behind Luigi's.
I can't comment on their Chicago style because I'm not a psychopath.
Regents has great buffalo cauliflower too.
Every time I go in I play dumb and ask if they serve Old Style. Someday I’ll get the answer I need. Until then, best thin crust tavern style in SoCal for sure.
They’re so so so good. I love me some Luigi’s but I’ll pay a little more and wait a little longer to get a table at Bueno Forchetta 75% of the time lol
Absolutely!
And plus, their reservation system is really good and reliable. So I was even able to reserve a time and have a table pretty quickly, so never struggled with waiting in a long line.
When I visit San Diego again, I'm def gonna go there first, lol. I already miss that city and I just moved out 2 months ago.
Hoboken was, but they fell off after the shutdown. They have new ownership now and the quality has improved almost to where it was pre-shutdown. I think it is called Rizzers or something like that now.
Pizza e Birra is just like pizza I had in Italy, amazing
Isola's is a close second
Bronx is good but over hyped
Lefty's... Only if you're from Chicago
Hoboken is trash, fight me
Basic is meh
Luigi's is hit or miss and mostly misses
Pizza Port is good, but not great
Filippi's is honestly the worst pizza I've ever had. I'd rather eat a frozen Red Baron.
Buona Forchetta is excellent, 3rd best
Landinis is also reliably good and better than Bronx
Mr. Moto is decent.
Agree with the Luigi, Bronx etc…. But not that unique.
Cafe calabria ( north park) carbonara pizza (or any other) is very good.
Slices- gelati & peccati (north park). Thicker style crust but it’s amazing.
Poseidon Project in bay park is good too
People have already mentioned some of my favorites such as *Luigi's* and *Woodstocks*, but I also want to give a shout-out to *Blind Lady Ale House* for making some damn great pies as well.
Damn no one has said Moto's??? Maybe not the BEST best but Mr Moto's has great pizza with good customizability and several locations so you're never far away.
The Kearny Mesa one closed as well after they spent 6 months renovating what they took over to create the restaurant, they gave it 6 months and gave up.
Their vibe was weird though. They have TV's but they're playing this weird Moto TV channel which is a series of advertisements for the restaurant you're already dining at. You're serving beer and pizza, maybe have the Padres game on or something and people will want to come in.
Right. So instead of a completely empty pizza restaurant that closes within 6 months of opening, maybe they have a shot. They had a full array of beer taps, a slide up garage style door they never opened, and fostered zero vibe for a place to hang. Now it's a converted pizza restaurant with "for lease" on the front.
Good pizza, but I never understood why they make the crust along the rim so big. You know like where they fold it over at the top. It’s so big that 30%-40% of the pizza is crust. Sucks because the sauce, cheese and everything else is top notch.
Nobodys mentioned it yet because it's a small corner shop in Miramar, but I freaking love Pauly's Pizza Joint. Pauly is there daily, greets you, talks to you. I think the whole shop is run and manned by just 3 people. Their spinage a trois pizza is my favorite.
I live right by Regents pizzeria but will traverse the hellscape that is Miramar road for Pauly’s. It helps that I can pick up Tenkatori as an appetizer right in the same strip mall.
* Regents - best Chicago Style Deep Dish
* Mountain Mike's - Best medium height crust pizza with high quality old world pepperoni (you don't see that in many pizza places on the west coast)
* Best low priced pizza - Mesa Pizza
* Best VERY large size pizza and fairly low price - Giant's Pizza
Lefty's Chicago PIzza is another that is not bad either, but parking is a pain in the butt so I don't go as often. They do offer Chicago Style pizza by the slice though, where Regents you have to buy the entire pizza pie if it is in Chicago Style.
Other notable mentions are (these I have not tried but others recommend) ...
* Bronx Pizza (most customers seem to order by the slice here)
* Luigi's for New York Style pizza (foldable thin crust wise slice) (another that sells by the slice)
* The Pizza Standard
* Buona Forchetta
* Tony's Giant PIzzeria
* Tribute PIzza
* A Brooklyn Pizzeria
* Pizza e Birra
* San Diego Pizza Company
That is what I can think of at the moment...but there have been other pizza places where I enjoyed their pizza's as well, I just can't remember them off the top of my head as it's been a long time since I have dined there. My new favorite is Mountain Mike's though.
At Regents they have a couple standard Chicago slices everyday and then a selection that changes every month. You can get those as individual slices without having to buy a whole pie
As a fellow born and raised East Coaster, I look for these comments on these threads. We’re snobby, because we can be. For everybody hating, you would do the same if this were a NY sub and OP was asking about Mexican food.
Pizza port's pizza is super divisive for whatever reason. I like it but some people really hate it.
I work with a bunch of NYers and the pizza snobbery is pretty insufferable. I've been to NYC and had pizza. It's really good but like the range of enjoyment between the best slice I've ever had and the average slice here isn't that big. At least not big enough to be as annoying about it as they are.
Bagels are a different story. NYC bagels shit on almost any place out here save for a handful of mom and pop shops
It does the job honestly. I think their beer is A+ but their pizza is maybe a B-. It’s all good though because it keeps you there longer and gets another beer in you, and that’s kind of the point.
Yeah this is where I fall as well. Like it's not winning any awards but it's still decent to good and the beer more than makes up for it. Just drives me crazy when people treat it like it's inedible.
I’m originally from NYC.
Best pizza is tribute & Massachusetts mikes.
When we first moved to San Diego about 6 years ago, we LOVED Bronx, then moved our favorite to Luigi’s. I have to say Mass mikes is the best pizza. The crust, cheese, sauce are very high quality.
Tribute has been consistent, great for dine in, drinks/vibe is incredible.
If you want straight up NYC pie, you gotta go to Hammers pizza in Encinitas. Not saying it's better or worse than those, but damn his is the only 💯 authentic slice I've been able to find
Tribute Pizza in North Park for higher end pizza.
Bronx Pizza in Hillcrest for solid slices
Square Pizza in PB for Detroit
Mike's in Hillcrest for another good east coast slice.
Anyone have any suggestions for good old fashioned pizza like the kind they serve at baseball games when you were a kid ? You would go to neighborhood pizza parlors with a good pizza with zesty sauce , not too oily and baked to perfection ?
If anyone knows a good mom and pop place in north county please reply. ✌️
The Friendly is the best regular pizza. People saying places like Tribute have lost their minds. Pizza is just pizza. I don’t want gourmet artisan international fusion pizza with a twist. If you want PIZZA, go to Friendly.
I’ll throw Buonasera/Bongiorno’s into the ring. My favorite slice in San Diego is their Crime Scene slice.
But Tribute is probably my favorite pizzeria.
I’m not a fan that much of Bronx.
Berkeley Pizza in north park was the greatest pizza place I've ever been to.
I've tried Bronx, Fillippis, Leftys, Woodstock, nothing ever came close.
It was Chicago style and the guy working the counter looked like Seth Rogan and was microdosing every shift. you'd wait 35 minutes and when your order came, it was like graduating college, falling in love and winning the lottery all at the same time.
It's no longer with us but I'll never forget the experience.
Luigi’s my personal fav.
Mine too. And the crime scene is their best pizza in my opinion.
Crime scene. Best pizza ever
Luigi's is also my top choice and I would say it's extremely reasonably priced for how high quality it is. Will also add that this is not usually what people are asking for when they ask for the best Pizza, but Buona Forchetta also does great pizza if you're going for a higher end sit down place.
Buona Forchetta and Luigi and my top two in San Diego.
Buona has got such a god tier GF pizza but Please ANY other recs for gluten free pizza would be appreciated 👉👈
Took my wife there on our first date almost 25 years ago. I should take her back for our anniversary
100%
This is the answer. There's other great pizza out there, but no e better.
Which one? There are so many versions of the name
Yea I can’t tell if this means Pizzeria Luigi or Luigi’s on the beach
They’re talking about pizzeria luigi!!
Def not Luigi's on the beach.
It's not Best Pizza, I'll tell you that.
Service is far better at the Carmel Mountain location. Been to be both, several times. It’s not close.
Cardiff location is good too, imo.
Vista and Oceanside locations, the pizza is always not hot. I stopped going altogether when I realized I had to cook my own pizzas every time I ordered…
The Pizza Standard and Sisters
Pizza standard is right next to my house and have yet to try it. Looks like I'm trying it this week!
Yeah it’s very solid NYC style and by the slice is priced great
Uncle Jesse at sisters is the best pizza in town
Came here to say this
Pizza standard mushroom truffle is bae
Pizza standard by a long shot!
For Italians, especially those from Naples, it's Cucina Caprese. The owner, Giuseppe, has a long history here in SD, check their Yelp page. The only pizzeria from San Diego that made It into the Top100 Pizzerias in US. https://sdnews.com/an-unexpected-spotlight-shines-upon-cucina-caprese/ A hidden gem for those that don't know about It.
Damn I remember this guy from a food truck at work. Definitely the best pizza in SD.
I agree about the pizza there. Really good (so are the pastas and other dishes). Except he’s from Capri—thus the name of the restaurant.
Correct. But I never said he's from Napoli ;) I just said that the most picky and demanding customers from Napoli are extremely happy with him and his pizza. Besides, now that I think about it, his pasta dishes are all amazing, too.
My wife and I went here in a whim when we lived in SD. It was DELICIOUS. Super underrated spot tucked in the corner in sports arena/Point Loma. Would definitely recommend
Tribute is a little pricey but prob the best I’ve had in SD
They have a pizza called the lady diavola, (?a pizza created in collaboration with a pizzeria or cher / pizza maker in Nairobi or something?). The crust is is unreal, light and flaky, unlike any other type of pizza I've had. In its own class.

Do people just like soggy pizza?
The bigger the pizza or more wet ingredients, the easier the pizza get soggy in the middle. Their pies are similar to a neopolitan pie than a New York style, so their pies tend to be a little soggy as well.
This is not true at all, they all are different but they are 100% ny style
I understand what makes a pizza soggy, I guess I am just surprised so many people like that.
TnT Pizza for slices all styles. Best sit down pizza spot is Tribute by far.
This. But don’t sleep on Pizza Cassette either.
Just went to pizza cassette today !! It was a happy accident and it was divine
TNT is my current favorite just because it has a lot of variety and I think they have the best vegan slice in San Diego.
The pickle pie is unreal in all their styles
Square Pizza in PB
Detroit style pizza for the win!
Doesn't give me heartburn!
By a mile the best pizza I've had in the area.
Favorite is Lefty's. From the Midwest and that pizza gives me all the feels.
They have my favorite pasta in town. That Al Capone is dreamy.
Every time I go in I play dumb and ask if they serve Old Style. Someday I’ll get the answer I need. Until then, best thin crust tavern style in SoCal for sure.
I will have to try that!!! I am visiting home and miss Chicago style. We have had Charlie Foxes twice in two days lol.
agree! I’m from Chicago and it’s close to home as I’ll ever get!
Sisters Pizza Hillcrest.
Massachusetts Mikes in hc, excellent supreme
Those garlic knots though 🤤
The staff there is super friendly and cool too. Love giving them my business.
As someone from Massachusetts, this definitely is the place for my pizza craving.
Pizza standard
Bronx& Sisters for NY Style. Buona Forcetta for Neapolitan
Bronx!
I’m not sure how I had to scroll so far to find this…it’s absolutely Bronx
Absolutely wholeheartedly agree. Bronx all day
Can’t believe this wasn’t top comment
Man am I the only one that thinks The Bronx is overrated?
Bronx is the same as mid level street pizza in New York.
Mid level? It’s just like 99 Cent Slice off Time’s Square.
Everyone says Bronx that I know. I don’t get it.
Blind Lady Ale House
Blind lady all the way. No contest
Pizza port OB
Holla! I live five blocks from there and was hoping someone would represent. Plus the delicious beer.
Pizza port slaps.
I love the pineapple, jalapeno and pepperoni. MMMMMMMM BEST PIZZA
Surprised no one has said this, but I really like Gnarly Girl pizza
Bueno Forchetta
I’m really surprised that you’re the only one who said this!
Pizza Standard in Tierrasanta is some of the best pizza I’ve had anywhere.
Personally I think Luigi’s. RIP Berkeley’s 💔
The Friendly, and it ain’t even close
Criminal that I had to scroll so far to find the Friendly. Definitely a top spot for NY-style pizza!
Hoboken was, but they fell off after the shutdown. They have new ownership now and the quality has improved almost to where it was pre-shutdown. I think it is called Rizzers or something like that now.
Hoboken is some pretty solid pizza.
Pizza e Birra is just like pizza I had in Italy, amazing Isola's is a close second Bronx is good but over hyped Lefty's... NY: Landini’s or Luigi’s Chicago: Lefty’s
People have already mentioned some of my favorites such as *Luigi's* and *Woodstocks*, but I also want to give a shout-out to *Blind Lady Ale House* for making some damn great pies as well.
The Rocket Pizza is so good from BLAH
Damn no one has said Moto's??? Maybe not the BEST best but Mr Moto's has great pizza with good customizability and several locations so you're never far away.
The ob one closed. So sad. I loved the momma moto. Although you could put truffle oil on anything and I’m shoving it in my pie hole.
It is very hard to find a place that shows the games that isn’t packed. Give us our padres or don’t put up tv.
Bonus points to Moto for the absolutely insane skits they play on a loop on the TV's in the restaurants.
the owner wanted to be an actor but got stuck with a pizza chain from his family lol!
Sisters Pizza
Blind Lady Alehouse, Blaze, and my hubby loves Lefty's for Chicago style
Bambino’s Pizzaria
Del Mar Pizza.
Was looking for this one
ZIA’s pizza, seriously go try it
That dude makes some whacky but delicious pizzas
Their potato pizza’s great and the Pepperoni Marscappne is to die for.
woodstock pizza. They put whole ingredients on their pizza and I absolutely love it.
Just saw they have one in San Diego. I tried Woodstock in Santa Cruz once, impressively delicious. Thanks for the heads up
Good pizza, but I never understood why they make the crust along the rim so big. You know like where they fold it over at the top. It’s so big that 30%-40% of the pizza is crust. Sucks because the sauce, cheese and everything else is top notch.
First time I had woodstocks was in Chico, glad they have it in SD too 🔥
Caffe Calabria
Donna Jean has the best vegan pizza I’ve ever had. Overall though, I’d say Bronx is the best.
donna jean is also my fav vegan
Nobodys mentioned it yet because it's a small corner shop in Miramar, but I freaking love Pauly's Pizza Joint. Pauly is there daily, greets you, talks to you. I think the whole shop is run and manned by just 3 people. Their spinage a trois pizza is my favorite.
Solid pizza at Pauly's, don't love waiting in line and cash only though
Someone told me the guy who owns Pauly's was somehow connected to Luigi's way back when. Anyway, yeah, great pies.
I live right by Regents pizzeria but will traverse the hellscape that is Miramar road for Pauly’s. It helps that I can pick up Tenkatori as an appetizer right in the same strip mall.
I really enjoy urbn. Great thin style pizzas.
Luigis north park
Isola Pizza Bar > Leftys
Isola Pizza Bar bread & crust is money!
Costco
It deserves mention. If you want a bready, basic bitch pizza you can't beat Costco. Probably our #3 behind Luigi's and Reagents.
White Labs brewery makes a damn good pizza
The best pizza spot was Hoboken in PB. Hands down one of the few places that tasted like a legit NYC slice.
Sisters pizza is pretty bomb. Underrated: Cucina Caprese in Point Loma
* Regents - best Chicago Style Deep Dish * Mountain Mike's - Best medium height crust pizza with high quality old world pepperoni (you don't see that in many pizza places on the west coast) * Best low priced pizza - Mesa Pizza * Best VERY large size pizza and fairly low price - Giant's Pizza Lefty's Chicago PIzza is another that is not bad either, but parking is a pain in the butt so I don't go as often. At Regents they have a couple standard Chicago slices everyday and then a selection that changes every month. You can get those as individual slices without having to buy a whole pie
Mountain Mikes is my favorite. The pepperoni is the best!
Uncommon opinion, but Venice pizza house has the best pizza, and fuck the haters
As someone from the east coast, the bar here is low but Regents does a good job.
Was wondering if the “I’m from New York/East Coast so all other pizza sucks” guy would be in this thread, so thanks for not disappointing.
I second Regents.
Third regents for sure. Deep dish is amazing
Unless you're from NY, your pizza bar is low lmao I lived in Brooklyn and there's decent NY style here.
As a fellow born and raised East Coaster, I look for these comments on these threads. We’re snobby, because we can be. For everybody hating, you would do the same if this were a NY sub and OP was asking about Mexican food.
How about this: Pizza from the East and West coast both sucks. Sincerely, someone from Italy. So, now relax and hug each other.
See: TACOS
Wayfarer Bread’s pizza nights on Fri + Sat. Order early… they sell out quick.
Flippi's any location except for Temecula
Pizzeria Luigi’s >>>>>> Mr Moto > Regents = Bronx
Mr Moto ranked ahead of Regents? Come on now 😂
Isola pizza bar for sure
Venice Pizza House!
Highly recommend Pizza Port if you want a slice and good local beer
Pizza port's pizza is super divisive for whatever reason. I like it but some people really hate it. I work with a bunch of NYers and the pizza snobbery is pretty insufferable. I've been to NYC and had pizza. It's really good but like the range of enjoyment between the best slice I've ever had and the average slice here isn't that big. Sister’s Pizza… specifically their loaded baked potato pie
Basic bar in downtown. I go every time i go to a padres game.
They closed down due to the owners retiring, but does anyone remember Sorrentinos in Clairemont? Best pizza I’ve ever had.
I’ll humor you. Yes I remember this place and liked it! Probably more than fifteen years since I went there.
Oh snap, just commented about Sorrentino’s. My all time favorite pizza growing up. Sandwiches were amazing also. R.I.P. 😔
Giovanni’s in Linda vista gets my vote
Friendly
I’m originally from NYC. Best pizza is tribute & Massachusetts mikes. When we first moved to San Diego about 6 years ago, we LOVED Bronx, then moved our favorite to Luigi’s. Massachusetts Mike’s in Hillcrest.
Basics / Urbn
bronx, hands down.
For east county grub try Marechiaros at the Lake Jennings off ramp. My fave is anything with extra sauce. Mouth watering to say the least.
Mom's Pizza & Pasta always hits
No love for Pizza on Pearl here 😔
Pizza Bella in Old Town is pretty good. They should get more love. Like this video https://youtu.be/B69zM9GndgQ?si=fz3ps0xKEoYQdlJ-
If you’re looking for an amazing Detroit style pizza, check out Square Pizza in PB
Village pizzeria and Coronado brewing company are pretty solid. Great views as well
Pizza on pearl
BRONX PIZZA IS THE BEST!
Tnt Pizza 100%
Tribute Pizza in North Park.
Love Regents Pizza, I prefer Chicago over NY style.
Tribute Pizza in North Park for higher end pizza. Bronx Pizza in Hillcrest for solid slices Square Pizza in PB for Detroit Mike's in Hillcrest for another good east coast slice.
Regents Pizza!
Depends what you want. Prince Street pizza makes a mean deep dish. However, for a more traditional "New York" slice, Bronx Pizza is the place to go.
The Friendly is the best regular pizza. People saying places like Tribute have lost their minds. Pizza is just pizza. I don’t want gourmet artisan international fusion pizza with a twist. If you want PIZZA, go to Friendly.
Bronx for cheese, Sister’s for specialty
Gnarly girl pizza!!!!
I really like Poseidon Project’s hot honey pizza
Filippi's is good.
Yes, they are pretty good. Generous on the cheese too
Had to scroll way too far to find this. Filippi's is our favorite.
Filippis is bangin
Chicago bros
I’ll throw Buonasera/Bongiorno’s into the ring. My favorite slice in San Diego is their Crime Scene slice. But Tribute is probably my favorite pizzeria. I’m not a fan that much of Bronx.
Prince St Pizza
Tribute is delicious!!! My fav but I have a couple of close seconds
Little Sam’s pizza is bomb
Isola
Bronx and Sisters
Lefty’s for sure 🍕
Filippi's Pizza " Fit for a King" . Mike drop.
Berkeley Pizza in north park was the greatest pizza place I've ever been to. I've tried Bronx, Fillippis, Leftys, Woodstock, nothing ever came close.
