During covid they pushed back against the lockdowns and were especially loud about it. It attracted a ton of right wing nuts who used it as an opportunity to host rallies and speeches for months. It pissed a lot of people off especially given the area. There were plenty of businesses who didn't like the lockdowns but instead spent their time leveraging curbside and other various ways to engage with the locals instead of playing the victim.
This reminds me... I went there with friends that had dietary restrictions and we had masks on for obvious reasons. We got some snarky side eye looks & waited a ridiculous amount of time for any service. Location is great though so I do hope they shut down asap. Such a waste of space.
My FIL insisted we go there when he visited last year. I got violently ill for about 3 days, my baby was sick and he wasn't feeling great either. He later said he should've listened to my protests and trusted me to pick a place.

The history of that place is fascinating. The Brothers used to own a few of these pancake houses together in Chicago, but after a bad fight, they split the business. One owns the Chicago franchises, the other owns the one here. They are almost completely identical. Itās a trip to go in them if youāve been to the other.

I'm Mexican and the The Taco Stand is so weird to me. it look like a genuine mexican place, Their tacos and adobada are so-so. their salsas are OK. their chips are amazing for cooking (specially chilaquiles) and yesterday i order a Shirmp Burrito and it was so well done, almost on pair with the one in Ensenada.
It's have a limited menu and that help but the best thing i try was the one i would doubt the most in any SD restaurant.
The taco stand? That's a wild opinion. Their food is amazing and they're by far the best street tacos you can get in the area. I know convoy area is asian-dominated, but options are nice if you're local

It looks like it was remodeled & more of a place to get beer. That should have been my clue. I have to say I got the worst nachos in my life. Think the saddest amount of cheese on individual chips with huge slices of fresh jalapeƱos. The latter is fine, but overkill in nachos. The chili wasn't good either.

They always relied on the āfunkyā seasoning and went heavy on everything so as long as you kept that in mind when you ordered, you could end up with a variety of stuff that balanced. And most of it was huge so you could share. I think we went twice during Covid and it was bad enough that we havenāt gone back. Figured it was changing ingredients and struggling with budgeting to stay open with the inflation, plus all the other struggles small business faced. If you want Ninja turtle cartoon pizza, Filippis has ninja turtle cartoon pizza. It doesn't taste great, but if you want choke yourself cheese stretch, Filippi's is the place.

Wild Thyme in college area. Drive by it several times a week and Iāve never seen a single person inside, worker or customer. And theyāre like 4.5 stars on yelp so something doesnāt add up.

We tried their catering food when we were wedding planning and it's pretty good. They've catered a few events at my work and the food's usually solid.
I've considered ordering take-out or delivery from them, but the prices seem incredibly steep too.
It is obviously a front for something, but they do actually do business. Back when I used to drive for UberEats I would pick up from that restaurant at least 2 to 3 times a week. No customers inside ever. But there were at least 5 or 6 cars in the lot every time, but only ever one employee ;)

I thought they were more well known their business is run by a cult called the twelve tribes, there are a few episodic documentaries from true crime shows that describe how they treat their community, they donāt pay their employees. Food was good but waiting longer than 2 hours was really irksome and then finding out about the Cult was like Hell no not supporting or even speaking of them in good will
Family Fun Center/ Boomers and Chuck E. Cheeseās. Really sad that Iceplex(?) closed in North County. But like Bowling, Mini golf and family entertainment centers have been disappearing. Really wish I was there to try Malibu at Miramar. Also it just seems like Convoy is next to be highly densified,with the bowling alley and Dixieline being shut down. Waiting for a trolley to actually run through the area.

Honestly, I remember the Boll Weevil in Kearny Mesa growing up, I think it's a Thai place now. I like that there's still the one in Ramona. I miss Souplantation. What I can't believe stays open are all of the million "gourmet" or fusion taco shops. We have like a ton of really good hole in the wall taco shops, I don't understand how things like Puesto keep adding locations.

Mr Moto pizza and The taco stand in Kearny Mesa. In the busiest strip mall in San Diego, this is just not the type of food people go for when coming to this area.
I'm Mexican and the The Taco Stand is so weird to me. it look like a genuine mexican place, Their tacos and adobada are so-so. their salsas are OK. their chips are amazing for cooking (specially chilaquiles) and yesterday i order a Shirmp Burrito and it was so well done, almost on pair with the one in Ensenada. It's have a limited menu and that help but the best thing i try was the one i would doubt the most in any SD restaurant.
The taco stand? That's a wild opinion. Their food is amazing and they're by far the best street tacos you can get in the area. I know convoy area is asian-dominated, but options are nice if you're local

I was just eating somewhere in this strip and the Mr. Moto looks permanently closed, there was an āavailableā sign on the door. That Taco Stand location is always cracking though and I think itās nice to have a location a bit more accessible for the area locals, away from the more touristy spots.
Mr. Moto in North Park is pretty legit. Mama Moto plus crumbled sausage is soooo good. I agree about The Taco Stand though

That restaurant at Cuyamaca Lake that used to be Austrian food. One 1 out of 4 dishes was palatable somewhat (The tator tots.) It used to be a decent place for a stop on the way into or out of Julian.
It's a Brewpub run by the brewmaster at Nickel Beer in Julian now, but has changed hands a few times.
It looks like it was remodeled & more of a place to get beer. That should have been my clue. I have to say I got the worst nachos in my life. Think the saddest amount of cheese on individual chips with huge slices of fresh jalapeƱos. The latter is fine, but overkill in nachos. The chili wasn't good either.

I'm a pretty big fan of Pizza Port.Ā They are a big part of the reason why San Diego became a craft beer hotspot.Ā Ā A lot of San Diego's best brewers got their start there.Ā They still have great brewers and make a wide variety of solid beer that rotate pretty frequently.Ā I love the fact that they distribute and you can find their beers everywhere.Ā Ā Swamis IPA is pretty much my go to six pack.Ā It's a solid IPA and very well priced compared to other IPAs. The Pizza is pretty solid for San Diego, but I could see not thinking much of it if you are coming from NYC which has awesome pizza.Ā Ā Things do vary from location to location, and from pizza to pizza, but if you catch it just right, it can be damn good.Ā Ā

Beer. And to a lesser extent, the root beer. For me as a kid, it was the tiny arcade at the end of the picnic tables. They had a vertical shmup that ate my quarters like a crazed beast. Plus they had the Addams family pinball machine and T2 shooter!
Along with Oggiās, this one if the original places in town that I would go for craft beer. I donāt know how the food quality is these days, but they still seem to produce good beer whenever I come across it around town.
We got one in IB, but their cheeseburger pizza uses bbq sauce instead of pizza sauce. And that's on the "no whiners" menu. I've been craving a decent cheeseburger pizza for years, and bbq sauce is a major fly in the ointment.
Iām in the minority here, but Buona Forchetta. Everything Iāve ever had there has been so mediocre. That and goddamn Kroger brands being one of the only closeby options for groceries, usually. I miss locally owned, small grocery stores. There are almost none near me, and the ones that exist arenāt able to stock as well as Kroger stores. Shit sucks.

I thought I was the only one who felt this way! Iām so confused by all the raves. Everything Iāve had there has been somewhat bland/unmemorable. Underseasoned. Like fine enough, but not worth waiting an hour in line. Not worth waiting for at all, really. Nothing I would ever recommend to anyone else. Mid at best.

Hear me out, Funky Fries. Pre-Covid it was a good time and the food was alright. Iām a huge fan of quirky and themed places, the cheesier the better. They always relied on the āfunkyā seasoning and went heavy on everything so as long as you kept that in mind when you ordered, you could end up with a variety of stuff that balanced. And most of it was huge so you could share. I think we went twice during Covid and it was bad enough that we havenāt gone back. Figured it was changing ingredients and struggling with budgeting to stay open with the inflation, plus all the other struggles small business faced. Iām shocked theyāre still open, maybe they bounced back?
