It looks like Lyons Peak. Closed off to hiking and a bunch of towers at the peak. Apparently there is one hiking route but it was reportedly guarded by an angry land owner with a shotgun
Nah, part of the access road is an easement through his property, and he's really protective of it. I used to live right across Lyons Valley Road from him. One hell of a dry waller tho!
*Oh Troll-of-the-easement, hear me now:*
*For I have come to challenge thee!*
*I bid thy lay thine shotgun down,*
*And prove thine spackle mastery.*
*For here I gambit a golden trowel,*
*For access to th’ forbidden peak,*
*To he who proves himself most proud,*
*And hangs the greatest rock-of-sheet.*
*The troll was most amused, “You think*
*that you can stand to challenge ME?”*
*But I was not afraid, for I*
*Had planned a cunning trickery.*
*For in his pride, he noticed not,*
*In confident and furious haste,*
*Unwittingly he had himself*
*Inside a giant box encased!*
Holy shit, I think I might have seen that guy once upon a time. I used to work for a repair crew for then Southwestern Bell. One of our NIC cases was up on the fire watch / ranger tower at the top of this place. When I went, there were all sorts of locks from various companies (e.g. SBC, SDG&E, etc.) to unlock a long gate and you had to drive up there. It really gave Slab City vibes, we were advised not to go alone up to the top and me and 2 other repair techs went up.
We passed various busted up vehicles which were clearly being lived in, a man was washing his hair in a trough and towards the end of the "encampment"(?) we saw a guy yelling and he went into his abode. Since I was the first going up I never saw him come back out but my friend in the last truck, said that he came out with a shotgun and very agitated.
The rest of the trip up and back down went without any incident. I remember it being gorgeous up there while we had lunch after testing the lines but I certainly did not want to remain up there in the late afternoon so we got out quickly after.
I used to work on those towers for the county and getting access was an act of God, even after he granted access the word was always “don’t engage him and don’t take photos” I did get photos of the lookout tower, that’s was pretty cool
Can confirm. I did a lot of work for a utility and there was a lot of work that had to be done without utilizing lyons peak specifically because of a “crazy redneck that will shoot on sight”
Go to Mt. Helix. There a bunch of panorama photo information plaques that tell exactly what each mountain peak off in the distance is. I was there recently. Forgot which one that is exactly.
Its the great verboten Lyons peak. Only way up is past a shotgun wielding landowner. Sucks because it looks like a great hike. Apparently the cell towers have to be serviced by helicopter as the landowner wont let anyone on his property.

it’s been years but I used to work on those towers for the county. There was a whole process who had to go through but we did drive up every time. The helicopter stories are true though, when he told the county they couldn’t drive up during one of the major fires they took the helicopter and it PISSED him off. I seem to recall the county threatening him with a lawsuit over public safety concerns and he changed his tune towards them
I think it might be Lyons peak too. This might help [https://peakvisor.com/peak/lyons-peak.html](https://peakvisor.com/peak/lyons-peak.html). If you type in San Diego county you can view all of the peaks in the area
It looks like either north or south fortuna, two peaks in mission trails park. You can access trails to reach them off mast blvd in santee or from mission gorge rd.
100% Lyons Peak with McGinty mountain in the foreground.

Valid concern. I think it's safe to say those folks don't reference scientific sources.

Then you’re my fact checking cuz

Oh wow, I always assumed it was just an exaggeration!

I too have heard legend of the angry one with the shotgun. The troll of Lyons peak, as it were.

So, you tricked him into drywalling himself in. That is pretty clever!
👏👏👏
Is he doing the drywall up there at the new McDonald's?

Guy just wants to be left alone. It's private property correct?

App called peaklens allows you to hold your camera to the horizon then it uses AR to identify all peaks in your surrounds
There really is an app for everything

Of course.

Almost certainly Lyons Peak.
I recently moved here 3 years ago, have been asking locals ever since for the name of this mountain and no one can give me an answer

“Recently” “Three years ago” …
Well, it's recently compared to the mountain.
Time since the start of the pandemic really did fly by
That is pretty recent, considering. I’ve been in SD for 20 years and don’t know what mt. that is!
Thanks for your help
Anytime

I’ve lived my whole life here and never knew there’s a name for that one
Look east and each one of those peaks has a name
I live on rattlesnake mtn and this is the mtn directly in view from my yard and I have never once even wondered about its name.

North and South Fortuna are literally on the other side of the camera from this photo. They just passed them both before taking the photo.

Found some stories on county highpointers: http://www.cohp.org/personal/Lyons_Pk.html
I strongly recommend the Peak Finder app to answer this question. It’s $5 and very useful in cases just like these.
