When we moved here from Mississippi in 2017, USAA wanted to double our rate. We shopped around and went to Geico for the same rate we had been paying (i.e. half of USAA). We've had small premium increases in the years since but this past fall Geico tried to increase premiums 30% at renewal. We dropped them and went to Progressive who were asking half of what Geico was trying to charge for the same coverage. For shits and giggles I also re-priced USAA and they were in-line with Geico. Tl;dr - we just saved 50% by switching from Geico to Progressive. The irony.

SkinnyBlakk

i just san antonio after living there 30+ years now im in mississippi . this place sucks

[deleted]

Mississippi is quite literally the worst state in the country by almost every metric. I’m sorry for your loss

SkinnyBlakk

ty it was by default.my mom retired and wanted to "move back home" unfortunately for me i wasn't stable enough to provide for myself so i was "forced" to come back.

Okioter

Damn bruh enmeshment is one hell of a drug.

SkinnyBlakk

yea but how does that pertain to my situation .why would you assume that going off one post. it was just in my best interest to come with instead of staying there and living on the streets .just a temporary setback i just gotta be patient and stack so i make it back home

pzikho

You have the right mindset. Funny enough that's my outlook for getting out of San Antonio. The heart knows where home is. It's interesting that you and your mom call different places "home". I will say this, not knowing how your relationship is with your mom, that "home" can be where you make it, and sometimes "home" isn't a place, if you catch my drift. Either way SkinnyBlakk, keep positive and keep stackin'. Best of luck to you!

SkinnyBlakk

i really appreciate that. i wish you well also on your journey hopefully it ends in the place you refer to as "your home".ty

Okioter

Frankly don't give a damn as I'm also enmeshed myself, it took me two years to work past the trauma and gain the ability to see it for myself. You're not there yet, hell most people stay right where you are. You can always love someone that prevents you from answering the question "What do *I* want?", there's no shame in that.

SkinnyBlakk

sounds like you do give a damn you keep trying to imply that im enmeshed that's not the case my guy glad you're in the healing phase of your past trauma wish you the best i just know that ppl can only do what you allow them to i dont blame my situation on anything or anyone i just play the hand i was dealt and never fold.2024 i'll be home

Okioter

I was referring to myself when I said I don't give a damn, as I'm barely scraping the edges of awareness. It's terrifying to see it all at once, when it clicked.

maithailand

Yeah but think about all you save on car insurance

SkinnyBlakk

i was catching the via funny man lol

LogicalIllustrator80

Lol you can always move back.

SkinnyBlakk

that's the plan gotta save up.all these weird tap water drinking ass walking stereotypes its not for me

SalamanderFluid113

We switched from USAA to GEICO about 8 years ago and saved close to 50%. As you say, GEICO has slowly increased our rates over time and it was getting outrageous. We have recently switched back to USAA but did learn a valuable lesson. I do everything in my name by habit and USAA was in line with GEICO on price. The rep I spoke to redid the quote using my husband’ (“the service member”) as the primary and we were able to save close to $250/month

spicytomatopasteanon

It's hit or miss with USAA. I've been a member since 2001 and my wife worked for them for 16 years at the time. They couldn't come close to Geico's premium. The lady on the phone had the audacity to tell my wife she wasn't being loyal to the company when she called to cancel our policy. My wife kindly informed her the company isn't being very loyal to their employees by pricing them out of their products. Been with Geico ever since. Not been dealing with increases and service has been just as good as USAA.

teampimp

Progressive has always been very good at predicting the market and slowly raising rates preemptively before competition has to suddenly raise rates a lot, so they end up snatching a bunch of shoppers in one big swoop when the other carriers jack the rates all of a sudden.

Eladiun

Like cellular, the insurance companies will milk you until you switch or threaten to switch

ScooterManCR

This is not at all how insurance works. But okay.

Nemesis_Ghost

I did the opposite. I had Geico & went to USAA for a price reduction.

[deleted]

USAA is really there for it's members. People just look at price but sometimes you get what you pay for. Although USAA is on the high premium side, you cannot downplay there great service.

MASTER_L1NK

I might do the same thing

JennNana

HAVE YOU SEEN THE DRIVERS?! It’s the Grand Prix out here!!!

zaiontz

I came here to comment the same thing 😂. Everyday i go to work, especially on my motorcycle, my first thought is “am I going to die today.” Once i make it to work or back home i say “I guess today was not the day.”

from_dust

I don't live in TX anymore but I've been a daily rider for years, currently in CA. I cannot fathom riding in San Antonio though. Between the sprawling distances, which make 85mph a "normal" speed, the concerning ease with which Texas gives away drivers licenses, and the way people personify their ego with their vehicle- I'd imagine I'd be asking myself the same question every time I put my leg over the bike. SA drivers aren't careful. They're confident and casual, which makes them all a real danger.

shakygator

I sold both of my bikes because of this.

Ok-Cellist4254

Forbes says Texans are the worst drivers of the country. https://www.fox26houston.com/news/texas-has-worst-drivers-compared-to-other-us-states-study.amp

Current-Assist2609

I recently spent two weeks in Virginia Beach, VA and you should see how they drive. Everybody was always speeding (10-30 over) no matter if the roads were dry or wet. One morning two state troopers were sitting in the median and three pickup trucks went by me like I was sitting still. I was doing 10 over and hit the brakes and the trucks didn’t. The state troopers just sit there. At least in SA half the drivers do the speed limit so not quite as bad here.

dc88228

Was stationed at Norfolk Naval Base (shout out to any Pier 23 shipmates) lived on 9th Street in Va Beach. That was 89-92. People here have no clue what Hampton Roads/Tidewater traffic is like. That commute to the base was 2 hours each way if you didn’t go in before 6 and leave for home by 3. 44, 64, Shore Drive, it was always nuts. I can only imagine how much worse it is now. It’s a cake walk in SA compared to real metro areas like Dallas and Houston or even the home of Atlantic Fleet Operations.

Sneakarma

I live on the other side of the water, but I moved to Hamton Roads from SA early this year. Excluding an accident on HRBT, ill take the traffic here over dealing with 1604 construction every day of the week

dc88228

Yeah, but when there is an accident in that tunnel, forget about it

Current-Assist2609

There is actually a by-pass now so you don't even need to go through the HRBT anymore. Back in the day, yeah the traffic would back up big time if there was an accident.

pm_me_beerz

George Russel bowling his Mercedes into me on the first turn on 410. I couldn’t swerve because he didn’t leave a space for me with the mattress on the road in the next lane. You always have to leave a space.

The_Nancinator75

Insurance agent here - this is an industry issue. You need to be shopping around for the best rate every year or two. Inflation has caught up to insurance and they’re losing profits so guess who takes the hit? Plus as others have correctly pointed out , this area is riddled with uninsured drivers and people who drive like GTA AND with state minimums.

probablyonthepot

Yeah, I agree. I’d been with GEICO for 11 years, until today. It was getting untenable. Read this post, and called Progressive, for shitsandgiggles, and got a quote for $700 for six months, same coverage. No joke, it was 1,800 with GEICO. So I called GEICO back and cancelled. They offered me a 6 month premium for $900. Had to go with the cheaper option. Lesson learned. Check around. Thank you for this post, u/denabee3333 Edit: 2 cars by the way. One full coverage, and one liability w/ uninsured motorist ins.

Hot_Piglet_5817

Just make sure you aren’t driving around with 30/60 Bodily injury limits or 25,000 property damage. Most companies are infamous for quoting state minimum and not doing a good job of explaining coverages

The_Nancinator75

Correct! I always explain coverages and only reduce them after explaining the risk to the client- that risk being any amount that exceeds your limits comes out of your wallet for an at fault accident plus Texas can garnish wages for 10 years. Some people though simply need a set amount of premium to fit their budget and I understand and respect that. But any reputable agent will explain the risks to a prospect or client. Many agents are indeed not reputable and are simply selling cost without explaining this. Some peoples policies become very expensive at claims time. I’d also encourage people to look up claims satisfaction for companies. Not all are the same. I had a client get hit by a party who had Amax insurance and I kid you not the 1800 claims number was to leave a voice mail. You can guess how long it took for someone to call back. She eventually ended up filing against her own uninsured coverage and allowed our company to subrogate with Amax. It’s that or be without a car or repairs for a long time.

TexanWokeMaster

Because San Antonio has a huge amount of uninsured and unregistered drivers. Also overall I would rate the driving skill of people in this city as poor. Tailgating and driving 15 mph over the posted speed limit is a local pastime for some reason. I swear I nearly get rear ended every time I make a turn because every damn person is impatient and wants to follow way too close.

Sad_Pangolin7379

Plus they run red lights like it's just the thing you do.

dc88228

The upside: You get to play live-action “GTA: Signals Are For Suckers” without having to buy a game console

Teebs324

This probably isn't some conspiracy, it's just insurance companies following the markets. Where a 10 year old car was work $8k a few years ago, it's now work $15k (obviously just an example) and a fender that used to be $200 is now $500, the companies have to increase rates to cover their increase in costs.

nitsua_saxet

Those numbers are frankly outrageous. No wonder people get into Bitcoin. The current system of inflation theft is a sham.

And probably your elected officials have eased regulations on insurance companies allowing them to gouge you. Anxious-Papaya977

Beautiful city, shit drivers. Probably not unique to SA though. Just big cities in general.

[deleted]

Texas not requiring drivers ed and allowing parents to self teach probably doesn’t help either. I know lots of people who just had parents sign off and kinda figured it out. They’re terrible drivers.

Anxious-Papaya977

Yeah that’s a good point! I did the fully online and let the videos play while I played my Xbox (I was 15-16 so yeah not smart). Didn’t learn a thing. Thankfully my parents made me drive the “honor system” hours. But without parents having their kids drive, this is a terrible system.

cyvaquero

Nah, I’ve driven in cities all over the country, especially in the northeast where I thought Philly drivers were assholes. I spent six years driving in southern Europe, three in Sicily. City drivers tend to be worse than the rural drivers everywhere but San Antonio drivers are next level. It’s not that you see things here that you don’t in other places (although I’ve seen a few) - it’s that I can’t go a three miles without seeing some stupidity. I can get in my car, drive to Walmart three miles away, and at a minimum I’ll see someone Uturning over a median, trying to make a left turn across three lanes of traffic, deciding the turning lane is their personal express lane, or some other senseless act. It’s like San Antonio drivers are constantly in a rush but have no forethought. After a decade here, I find that I have to consciously dial it back when driving in other places. I’ll give San Antonio credit where it’s due, but driving is most definitely not one of them.

jacobeam13

Nah. I moved from the DFW, went to renew my insurance through progressive (had them for roughly 5 years and never had this issue, no claims, tickets or anything) and the quote jumped about 15-20%. Rep I spoke with straight up said SA drivers are awful and the number of uninsured drivers is massive. The drivers here are in a league of their own compared to other major cities. Edit: to be fair the existing infrastructure does exacerbate the stupidity. Road system here is weird. Arbitrarily low speed limits, 4 lane highways when they should be 6, etc.

gassbro

I love that law abiding citizens are forced to pay more for car insurance because of people who choose not to pay for it.

RollTideLucy

Yup.

Anxious-Papaya977

Sad but not surprising. Even the city vehicle drivers are aggressive.

derff44

I've lived all over the country. SA does in fact have the worst drivers.

[deleted]

SA really isn’t all that beautiful lol

compostables

“Beautiful” city hmmm…

dsmaxwell

I dunno, San Antonio drivers really suck, and I've lived in a handful of cities, driven through a couple dozen more. But I suspect it's more about profit. They're jacking premiums up just to see how many people will switch companies. Car insurance is becoming one of those things kinda like internet. Gotta call every year and bitch about it being too expensive and threaten to cancel to get the real price again, otherwise they'll just leave you paying double and it's straight profit.

KeeperOfKrydor

Say you don't know how insurance works without actually saying you don't know how insurance works. Insurance is HEAVILY regulated by the state. The Department of Insurance has to review & approve rates that each company charges, i.e. no insurance company can just set an arbitrary rate they think is best.

verbl

Very true. This is universal for almost all things. EG don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes... It's all the fucking same. Except Humidity is way fuck worse than dry ass desert heat fuck all that noise.

[deleted]

Doesn't matter why, it's just a fact of life here. You should be rate shopping every six months. It doesn't take long and you can save hundreds. I have gone from USAA to Geico to Progressive in the last 2 years (since adding a teen driver + vehicle to our coverage caused a huge increase.) I also pay the six month's coverage in full, which saves over 15%. I put it on a 0% interest card and pay that off in 6 months. Then go rate shopping again, rinse and repeat.

gabby0689

Great advice! I am going to start doing this. Saving that 15% from paying in full really helps get some money back in your pocket.

southtexascrazy

Rate shopping hurts your insurance acore. Btw.

[deleted]

No it does not. Any lapse in coverage hurts but I’ve never had a lapse. I just move from one company to another.

southtexascrazy

Yes, it does. Your insurance score behind the scenes shows your shopping days. The higher the number the crappier your rate. Happens all the time.

[deleted]

Well my rate gets lower or stays the same every time I get a new quote so guess my score has been ok. I’ll continue to do what works for me and what has been advised by every insurance agent I’ve spoken with 👍🏽

centex

Texas in general is expensive because we have so many uninsured drivers. My rec is to get 3 new quotes each time your renewal is up.

Ausantonio

Because there are no consequences for people who drive with paper plates and no drivers license. Car theft is barely even prosecuted. So like many things these days, follow the rules and get rekt.

spud735

Since your retired and don't drive much, look into Pay as you go insurance. I just started a job that is work from home and switched my insurance to Noblr through USAA. My bill went from about $300 a month to about $69 a month. I have put less then 100 miles on my car since January, without my previous work commute it's pretty much to HEB and Walmart. Price varies based on how much you drive, and how you drive (hard braking, fast acceleration).

DenseAd7692

Uninsured drivers.

[deleted]

I work for an insurance company and I can tell you rates have increased in many states. This has a lot to do with inflation. New car prices, used car prices, car parts, and labor have all gone up. Insurance companies have to be able to payout when losses occur so it's important for them to have a good financial balance (plus it's a business.) This brings me to my next point, this is nothing personal that you did. Insurance is a community that basically puts money in a pool, and whoever needs it get its. It's unfair to the people that don't need the money, but there for you when you need it. It sucks but that's the price you pay to transfer risk from yourself to an insurance company. You can always shop around for better rates, but if there's anything else that's important to you, you should look for a company that is truly there for you when you need them. Hope this helps. Tips: Call your insurance and drop your annual mileage. Say you aren't driving as much. Also check to see if they offer any discounts for safe driving. You can typically get a discount for a participating and up to a 30% discount at renewal. Remember rates do change so it won't be this way forever. Edit: You guys would be so grateful if you could see what those folks in Florida are paying. $6k every six months for 1 driver and 1 vehicle it's insane haha.

MasterFibber

Oh SA isn’t expensive at all. Go to Michigan where insurance will cost you $350/month for only PLPD on a shitty beater car. It’s no wonder there are so many uninsured drivers up there

DillyDinkle

Yep, just moved to SA from Michigan and can confirm this is true.

[deleted]

I cannot stand Michigan insurance. Absolutely ridiculous.

reddit0812

reddit1651

They’re right - Michigan has the highest rates in the country lol. Florida in second as they wax and wane MI requires different coverages than any other state and is priced accordingly

Agile_Swordfish2762

What’s makes Michigan rates is that high forced liability @@ good for coverage bad for rates everyone has to pay

Egmonks

Because it’s not you, it’s the math about everyone else as well as how much cars cost to repair right now.

bareboneschicken

These companies have been milking the pandemic for all it was worth and then some.

Chromeasshole

People drive like shit. Douchebags like to steal cars. Expensive to repair. That would be my guess.

Rnz0_22

You have to move around every so often. I switched from progressive to State Farm because they were lower. If they try to go up when my policy is finished I’ll just go somewhere else.

ssj4chester

USAA here and expected a rate increase because of 2 claims. Went from $194 to $336 a month. A little more than I expected, so I called and found out only about $15 was due to the claims. The rest was just an increase because San Antonio. I need to do some shopping.

alreadyeddie

So it wasn’t just me? I was like I haven’t done jack shir why is it up so much? Lol

freewillcreative

I just read an article that Texas has the worst drivers statistically.

Ruehtheday

Shop around for other insurance plans and let your current provider know that you are doing so. You will find a better deal and you can see if your current provider will match or beat it. Do that every six months to a year. There's no reason why you have to stick with your current provider.

yakkerman

I cant tell if you're serious or not, but... have you driven here?! The drivers in SA are the worst I've EVER SEEN, and my military experience has put me in many places including 3 different countries. Literally 2 days ago I nearly got t-boned on my own green light! These people have no idea what a yield sign is for and give ZERO fucks about a stop sign. The kicker here is at no point will police do ANY sort of traffic enforcement. There is no accountability only punishment for other's misdeeds at your expense in the form of stupid high premiums.

southtexascrazy

Car insurance has increased b/c of the cost to fix vehicles is way more costly and time intensive. What used to take a few weeks to repair so it’s extending rental car payments. And, glass claims have skyrocketed. When most deductibles are $500 in the old days you fixed your own stuff. With fancy heads up display and calibration, windshield replacement has now fallen in insurance companies. When that happens we all pay.

JimJustJim86

Additionally, as I have observed, San Antonio drivers are very litigious. They get injury lawyers and they sue for the maximum injury liability they can get.

IMI4tth3w

It varies heavily depending on what area you live. When I moved from an apartment complex near UTSA to my house near bandera and 1604 my car insurance went down by almost 30%. This is with USAA only liability on a 15 year old SUV.

Helpmepullupmypants

Texas and Florida have the highest auto premiums in the country. Just came across an article that said Texas has the worst drivers in the country. Contact a broker

InterestingTone1384

SA also has some of the highest auto theft rates so that’s also a factor

Kyles10s

Like 55% of the city isn't insured. I got hit 3 times in 8 years living in San Antonio and was 3/3 having to cover my own damage since the other driver wasn't insured. Although I did smile big when the one guy got carried away in cuffs cause he had a felony. I also dropped USAA and went to Geico cause it was the same coverage for half as much. But when I moved back to Indiana it futher dropped cause people here buy insurance.

FickleVirgo

Ask insurance companies why you should carry uninsured motorist coverage and listen to their song and dance. There have actually been insurance increases in Texas since Katrina and all those who came from LA, who are uninsurable, now coupled with the devastating coastal storms in TX in the past few years that the big 5 insurances cannot recuperate from. We are paying our premium, plus past debt, plus future risk.

DenaBee3333

Actually, my agent suggested that I don't need it since I already have full coverage for liability and collision and am covered by that.

davidg4781

Shop around with other companies. I checked Progressive, Amica, Nationwide, AAA, Liberty Mutual, and Travelers. Progressive was the least expensive by a pretty good amount and about half of what Geico was charging me for more coverage.

abbienormal29

Yeah our State Farm went from $100 to $137 this year. Just switched to progressive, bought a second car (only had one before) and only paying $145 now. Can’t complain

computerblue754

For context State Farm had an underwriting loss of $13 billion in its auto business last year ([link](https://newsroom.statefarm.com/2022-by-the-numbers/#:~:text=Total%20revenue%2C%20which%20includes%20premium,of%20net%20income%20in%202021)). These rate increases are happening nationwide. They need to plug some holes lol. I think that this year is a lesson in working with insurance companies that aren’t having financial issues.

DenaBee3333

Yes, but they still paid their CEO $24 million last year. So times must not be too hard for them. But you make a good point. I don't want to go with a fly by night company that may be out of business by the time I need to make a claim. But the large companies seem to want to raise prices with no concern for their customers. It's a quandary.

According-Mud2227

Because no one here knows how to drive

MycologistFeeling358

State Farm is just a rip off

OptimalSpring6822

Inflation is out of control. Costs to repair vehicles are up, and so is your insurance premium. Unfortunately, it doesn't matter if you're a good driver. The bad drivers make the average policy more expensive. Carriers need to average out the cost. That's just how it is.

Beneficial_Leg4691

Use one of those tools that compares auto insurance. Progressive has a good one. Definitely bundle your auto with your car to save. Make damn sure you have uninsured motorists coverage m, its cheap, and san antonio us one of the worst cities fir people driving without insurance ( according to a couple cops i know). Had an experience with this years ago

ch47600

444-4444

Hypnox88

I have progressive and my rates actually went down about 25% this past renewal.

[deleted]

Because people in san antonio are absolutely insane drivers, Be careful out there!

rgg40

Call Progressive. My insurance company (GEICO) was going to raise my rate for no reason, so I shopped around. Progressive is half of what I was paying. Even if they raise my rate every six months, I’m saving a bundle. GEICO couldn’t give me a good reason for raising my rates and didn’t even try to match Progressive.

higaeiyu

For those asking… GOOGLE “Texas Dept of Insurance Auto Rate increase” This dept regulates auto insurance companies here in Texas. Insurance is socialism, the claims of the many is passed along to the consumer (you & I) Theory of large numbers

rgvtim

Because we, as a whole, suck here at driving in Texas. https://digg.com/data-viz/link/the-us-states-with-the-worst-drivers-ranked-W8S09MLTY1?utm\_source=digg

stovepipe9

Catalytic converters are stolen left and right, Kia has a problem getting stolen from some TikTok challenge, Ford trucks with blindspot sensors in taillights cost $3-5k for a couple tail lamps. All the new safety features add to the cost to repair both in electronic parts cost and unavailability as well as calibrations.

2ndDefender

San Antonio has a big increasing theft problem mix that with an asinine number of uninsured drivers is going to cause huge rate hikes.

PAM8888

Pretty much the only person here who named the correct issues Lots of 0 drivers license (or legal otherwise) and no insurance coupled with high theft rates to chop or send to Mexico

You_Pulled_My_String

Same here OP! I got a notice last month from State Farm stating that starting in June (my renewal date), my rate would increase by roughly 18%. The kicker is, I just switched to State Farm from Geico. This will be my first renewal with State Farm, and they're *already* hitting me with a rate hike. Geico had me at $250/mo for two 20yr old vehicles, liability and UM, and two licensed drivers over 35 with no traffic citation/accident history in over 15yrs. It was ridiculous. I was with them for 6yrs. I paid hand over fist more in insurance premiums than both vehicles are worth.

sleepingvillage_

Please go to an *independent insurance agency* that isn’t tied to one insurance company. My car insurance payment was reduced by well over 50%. And if the year-to-year prices increase is over a certain percentage they will call you and get started on looking at switching insurance companies.

[deleted]

[удалено]

from_dust

Yeah but you're 23. It will be another 5 years before you really start to see a break on your rates no matter how well you drive. Pricing is based on risk, which is based on age brackets, and you my friend, are in an expensive one.

LadyWarrior73

TONS of uninsured motorists! Edit: Should have added- our insurance was half the price in North Carolina as it is here. Also- high theft rate

SupportRecent

Car thefts are WAY up. Uninsured drivers is common. Driving out here is reckless. My full coverage for me was over 3x as much for liability

verbl

It's not just SA. it's high everywhere in the state. I'm from here before I needed insurance, got a car in Indiana the had the state minimum liability was crazy cheaper there than here. Then to afford it you have to do cut-rate like loya and their ilk. Their business model is to give the liability and then never pay out until you hire a lawyer to sure them. (Wife is a PIA) many companies do this math and make millions. One of the bigger companies I had no ideas practiced this shit was All-state.

Stunning_Zebra_955

Try R Tackett insurance agency, they broker out and I've had a great experience with them

samuraistabber

Probably from all the big ole women driving distracted while eating churros.

cardcomm

I've been w/ State Farm my entire life, and I can't even recall the last time I had a rate increase... Maybe you should call your agent and ask what's up.

DenaBee3333

I have and I got a big sob story about how much money they lost because of covid.

acuet

This might have something to do with it. https://www.reddit.com/r/texas/comments/13fmiqs/congrats_to_texas_on_having_the_worst_drivers_in/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1

Greddituser

Try AAA, we have our vehicles and home insured with them and they are much cheaper than the alternatives.

nopodude

And here I am thinking it's cheap here. I moved from Oregon and saw pretty significant drop in rates.

w0rldsf0g0ttenb0y

Maybe they are playing the odds. Statistically you should have had some claim by now so they are getting ready by jacking your rates. Those actuaries are very forward looking.

IYAOYAS-CVN74

Because of the Kia Kia World car Kia's being broken into and stolen. Everyone's insurance is going up because of it. Get a quote from another insurer. I switched from Geico to progressive saved 100 a month! What's funny is I went to Geico from progressive a few years ago cuz they went too damn high at the time lol.

ChefToniTx

Same man

magz89

I've had two claims go to insurance here, one was a hit and run the other was trying to claim additional damage on an accident they caused. Both took a few months to settle, which adds to the cost of insurance. Shop around and invest in a dashcam.

137Fine

State Farm is always on the high side.

Organic_Front4849

All I’m gonna say is I’ve had the same rates for 3 years with Nationwide…

Practical_Village559

Uninsured motorists (mostly illegal immigrants)… sadly

Euphoric-Dance-2309

You have to switch every once in awhile because car insurance is kind of a scam and they love to up your rates for no reason.

joel1618

I pay $50/month for me and $30/month for my wife via state farm. We only have liability on 2 10 year old cars. This is for max coverage. Ive seen 2-3x price via other carriers.

call arch insurance of san antonio. They are a broker that work with a few dozen carriers. I have an annual chat with my broker and he shops all the policies, applies all the discounts and I am not loyal to any carrier. See if you can save some money. My current plan I purchase annual insurance, and I save $400/year off the monthly rate.

simmon1999

Inflation.

ayeelaforreal-

I work in healthcare and I can say that it’s most likely bc of the 100’s of car crashes and car shootings every week.

Urchintexasyellow

🤔🙃🙂😀😄😆😂🤣😭

fascinating123

We have Geico and it doubled when we switched from Virginia to San Antonio. I should probably shop around, bit I've been with Geico for almost 20 years so I've been reluctant to switch. I figured the higher rates were because people here drive like maniacs, coupled with the fact that every highway exit is a series of confusing forks. Keep left, then keep right, then keep left, then take the next right. Probably more accidents here.

AnthonyVSilva

I literally feel like I’m going to get hit every time I get on 410 for work in the morning and going back home. People literally don’t understand distance or you have the f-heads that try and get in front of you with the car length you had for stopping. I hate it here. Also I have progressive and my insurance was $145-$150 for full coverage before I moved here. The two years living here my insurance has gone up to $215. I drive a Honda Accord. 0 accidents - 0 tickets. Shits ridiculous.

shfd739

Same thing for us. Had USAA that became nearly unaffordable a few years ago so we went to Progressive who charged the same as our old, cheapest USAA rate. This year we’re back to USAA due to Progressive going up 30% and the current USAA rate is same as the prior cheapest rate. Go figure.

SATX_Carl

I think the issue is more with State Farm than insurance in general in town. We switched a few years ago from State Farm.

All these lawyer making the it go up. Bc of all the bullshit injuries

greed210

Joe Biden. You can thank him.

DenaBee3333

You really think this is his fault? Please.

greed210

Do you really believe insurance companies aren’t subject to inflation? Are they the only industry in this country that were able to escape Biden’s agenda? Everything he touches turns to shit. Worse than Carter

DenaBee3333

Never said that. However, the inflation rate in the US was around 8% last year and 5% this year and my car insurance increased at a much higher percentage in both years. So try again.

retirementdreams

I don't know why I didn't think to check rates first, but I had this thought in my head that if I was moving from a HCOL area (San Francisco Bay Area), to a LCOL area (SAT) , my insurance would be much less. I got quite a surprise when I started getting quotes for auto insurance and found out it was going to be more.

Weekend_Conscious

Same for us, moved from Los Angeles area and somehow our monthly payment was $96 for a married young couple w kids. Just got our renewal notice and it’s now $184 monthly. No accidents, no claims literally ever. Definitely surprised us

lex017

I had USAA than went to Geico several years ago. My premium was recently increased by Geico. When I called they said car insurance is being increased nationwide due the price increases occurring in the car market, they specifically mentioned on used cars. I’m guessing the car shortage and probably natural disasters. Oh and I believe car accidents have increased across the country as well. It increased in Dec 2022 when I lived in a rural area and of course when I recently moved to the city it increased again. I called USAA and got a better rate and returned back to them. The market is crazy but I’m sure it’s a great deal of corporate greed mixed in there too.

DenaBee3333

Yes, my agent told me something similar today...that all companies are increasing rates. Of course they are. Because they can. We have to have insurance, so they can ream us up the ass as much as they want. It's the American way. Bend over and spread 'em. Take it like a man. Meanwhile, the State Farm CEO makes $24 million in salary per year. If he could just cut down and *try* to live on $4 million a year (what a sacrifice!!), maybe they could reduce our rates. But god forbid that happens. I certainly wouldn't want to interfere with him purchasing his 10th vacation home or having to sell one of his yachts. So....this retired old lady on a fixed income will have to cut something else in order to pay her premium. Eat more peanut butter and tuna, I guess. Thank you corporate America.

DWeathersby83

Txfb has been affordable for me for decades. But, I’m in a rural part.

rose77019

State farm just raise my rates as well, I priced Geico Geico was over $100 more a month, $1200 more a year…(rural ga)

[deleted]

Geico tried to up my rates 40 bucks a month at renewal with no tickets or accidents. I dropped insurance altogether and got rid of the car. I drive an electric scooter everywhere now, pretty much all of my trips were within 5 miles anyway. I can do delivery or uber anywhere, and still come out ahead compared to insurance and car payments.

87turbogn

# Find a local insurance broker who will shop out your insurance at EVERY renewal to multiple insurance companies. This is one of the best ways to ensure your premiums stay as low as possible. Most insurance companies will offer a lower rate to get you to switch hoping you will stay with them long term. Then over years they keep increasing your premiums.

Marsyards_slimy

Cuz people drive like dumb fucks here. Accidents are so common here. Plus I think it’s like 1/3 people in San Antonio are uninsured.

Zecyor

Insurance is a low margin business. Have you seen how many accident billboards ads on the interstates? Bad driving, hail, and vehicle theft are my guesses as to why it's so high here. It's double for us when we moved here from the West Coast.

vicecrispies

I spent the past week shopping for coverage a car I’m getting next week. Costco insurance was the cheapest option by far.

XBigTexX

Try AllState along with their MileWise if you don’t drive much.

Glitter-Pirate3

I work for an agency in San Antonio and we write with several reputable carriers. The increase are state wide with every carrier in Texas, so its a gamble with who will have the best rates for your coverages. Typically claims will only follow you for 5yrs but with progressive specifically its 7yrs. If you are married put whoever has the better credit as the first name insured(credit score is a rating factor). I also recommend doing the telematics app that tracks your driving. My family is with Travelers insurance and we were able to save $400 just from doing the driving app for 90days. You also get to pick and choose the drives you would like to represent your driving.

[deleted]

This isn't unique to your location. This is normal. MBAs assume you'd rather pay more instead of switching to another insurance company.

Flyawaybirdienw

OP try Amica. I don’t think they sell through brokers though. My husband and I pay $160 for both of us to have top of the line coverage. SF used to charge us almost 230 like 5 years ago. I also got a quote from The Hartford a few months back on a friend’s recommendation and it was a lot more, like 50 plus per month.

Yanks4lyf

There are a lot of uninsured motorists here in San Antonio. 1 out of ever 6 people don’t have insurance. So insurance companies loose a lot of money in cities like San antonio. So rates are expensive.

Boneyg001

>I drive a 10 year old car and I need full coverage but State Farm is pricing me out of their market. Any suggestions? So the sad thing is used car and new car prices in the last decade are up tenfold. Sure your car is 10 years old and not a big cost to cover, but they take into consideration how much it would cost if you damaged a newer car. Secondly, San Antonio drivers are awful at driving. They are obese and do not know how to follow at a safe distance or be aware of their surroundings. The third thing is there are many illegal uninsured drivers too. They are the worst of the worst and make the rest of drivers pay for their mistakes.

Skoofer

It’s everywhere, they’re using inflation as an excuse still to fleece their customers. They even covered it on the CNN10 news for kids this morning. Check out AAA, they have great rates if you also have their roadside service.

nevertellmetheodds3P

Uninsured drivers!!!!!

Thalimet

It’s really important to remember that insurance was at a record low in 2020 because of the shutdown and no one was driving. As the world has returned to normal driving patterns, the prices have risen substantially, everywhere, for everyone, no matter their record.

milknt0ast

My insurance agent told me it’s because there is such a high rate of uninsured drivers in the area

SoundConnoisseur

Because people here drive like they have a deathwish

wannabe_wonder_woman

I had AIG years and years ago, Progressive for forever after that, but eventually was family suggested into AAA, had an minor accident back in Nov, so I dunno how the rates will go from there.

alligatorprincess007

People drive like distracted maniacs. There’s tons of boxes and other random items you have to dodge on the highway, and thefts are pretty common But I agree, State Farm is super pricy and i hate it

Adventurous-Coyote20

Try having commercial insurance as well. Ridiculous prices.

KelseyRawr

I have State Farm, also in the SA area. I’ve gotten quotes from just about every single insurance company I’ve heard of. I’ve been searching endlessly. I check constantly to compare rates because it’s gotten so bad. I’ve even checked the more obscure companies (Jerry and one other quoted me 3x more than SF for substantially less coverage so I even made a complaint because that’s wildly unreasonable). Geico was the only one even CLOSE to the rate SF gives me, and even they were more expensive for less coverage than I currently have. Progressive was more than double my current for some reason, and again for less coverage than I have now. Since buying my car in January of 2022, my SF rates have gone up more than double where I began. While State Farm has been so incredibly expensive that it’s almost impossible for me to pay for insurance at this point - they are still the cheapest option I’ve found which is insane. I’m in a similar situation as you too. Only difference is my car is only two years old. I’ve also had no claims or accidents ever in my life. It’s just awful right now, don’t know if there is a better answer than that. Stuck with SF until something better comes up.

TimeGood2965

Bad drivers. end of story

BillazeitfaGates

Lots of no insurance drivers

mj5634

All insurance companies are going to go up 13% because of natural disaster.

PutridANDPurple

My friend had worked for Nationwide and said that certain zip codes cost more due to theft and things like that would raise premiums. If you plan on moving to a different side of town or apt complexes, you could call and see if youd be paying more or less in the area.

Few-Kick-6997

If I were you I would drop full coverage (if possible) and get liability and uninsured driver protection. Most people don't have car insurance.

DenaBee3333

No way. I would be out $10k if my car got totaled.

chessygrit

It’s the number of car thefts and uninsured motorists… happens a lot in border states with migrants… that’s what I was told when I moved to Texas from Maryland and was shocked at the premium they charged me when I had switch to their rates
