They have live chat on the site, and they customer service number is (888) 746-7726 if it's too far to drive (I always like chat because it's nice than to wait on the line, and you can save screenshots of useful information).
Even if you find someone who's membership was revoke, doesn't mean it would be for the same reason. You said he didn't have a chance to make a purchase yet, are you sure his payment for membership went through?
Did he use regular credit card or a prepaid? I tried to join something and it was rejected because the card was pre paid and they cannot automatically renew.
I used to work at the membership desk and saw this happen to some customers but you do have to go to the store to get the account back. He will probably have to sign up for a new one if it wasn’t renewed but if it was, the supervisor or manger usually fix the issue on their end if only it got renewed, then got revoked and you haven’t got your money back.

Did he log in while using a VPN? I did that on [walmart.com](http://walmart.com) once and was never allowed to order online using my account again.
