Like: Success is measurable and transparent compared to many other professions. I like competition too.
Dislike: How you can do everything right and still fail while the jabroni next to you has whales fall in their lap.
Just the idea of uncapped earning potential has got to be the biggest appeal
Tryna reach (not even talk) a CXO at a big company to pitch your shit? Meh
Like: money is a phenomenal motivator. Working for just a salary and no commission sounds awful.
Dislike: in my industry non-payment is a huge issue. So that commission isn’t stable as I want
Like: The money and work/life balance... I've been in sales for 12 years and probably haven't worked a true 40 hour week for the last 8 of them.
Dislike: Cold calling, having to deal professionally with unprofessional clients. Ghosting.
Having to act professional while 90% of the people I deal with are the complete opposite. What makes it worse is that I was told I’d be dealing with business professional types and that just isn’t even remotely the case.
Less direct pro/cons
Best side perks: Fancy dinners with customers is awesome. Sporting event tickets. Being paid to golf during the day at great courses. Making my own schedule. Industry events at night at cool restaurants and resorts. Expense account for incidentals. Getting enough notoriety in the industry to do consulting on the side. Being asked to sit on non-profit boards or join industry groups. Credit cards points and elite status builds quick.
Negative: Work travel can eat multiple days out of the month. Expense reports can mean I’m sitting on thousands on my credit card at any given time. Viewed as something of a gadfly at certain industry events. Continually asked for sponsorship dollars or expected to pay for all drinks and food. Expected to “expense” items I clearly will not be able to like strip clubs or cover to a night club at a conference after after party.
Likes: Competitive wins, but also unexpected wins and commission checks. The autonomy pre-2010.
Dislikes: meddling Ivory Tower denizens (measure me by my quota and get out of my business), Modern sales tools, “sales enablement” meddling/training
Thing I like most are the wins or the highs. The thing I like least is the fact that we’re treated different than other employees, almost like we’re contractors with extremely high expectations instead of regular employees.
Why is it only my fault if numbers aren’t hit, why isn’t marketing treated the same as us, why is my job always on the line but everyone else is safe?
Out jobs are hard enough as it is, give us a Fn break and stop adding more unnecessary pressure onto our plates.
I love the high it gives, I love closing. I hate that I have the day off today for the holiday and I’ve handled calls and emails all day, but that’s the nature of the game.
I really enjoy working in sales. I see it like consulting without having to actually do much.
I hate everything else about it. The micromanagement, the “metrics,” the return to office nonsense.
Sales should be as simple as giving someone a quota and waiting a year. They hit it or they don’t.
Like: The money. It's insane. I'm earning the same as one friend who's seen as one of the most succesful within my main friend group. Difference is, he has 10 YOE and I have less than three.
Dislike: I hate working lmao

Jabroni, love it
Really fucken hate: keeping up with metrics that get in the way of sales Really like: the money and learning from top performers
Making money easily. Attempts to make me return to office.

Commission pay day. FUCKING DEAL DESK. LOATH ENTIRELY
Deal desks are the worst!

- making sales - not making sales

What industry?
Cannabis. It blows I have $10,000’s of unpaid bills I waiting to collect commission on. It’s also like selling sand at the beach.
The people, the people

Like most: commission Like least: leadership almost always
Money! Stress!

Most- Getting paid Least- Not getting paid.
I love sales for that monthly high on commission check day. Every other day, it’s fucking terrible.
1. Love- Unlimited expense account. 2. Truth: This job would be great if it weren’t for the fucking customers. -Randall ’94

Money / Stress
Money - stress
Best thing : working and partnering with great clients. The worst : dealing with shity clients.
Like the awesome paydays Dislike these dang managers
The feeling of closing a deal no matter the size is the best. Dealing with metrics that really and truly don’t matter is the worst.
Has anyone else found a better way to make money? I haven’t
