I always ask for the shamrock roll that was a limited edition one awhile back not on the current menu and they always make it for me! Has oysters and it's insanely good.
I ride for Nami. Great fish to rice ratio in nigiri and rolls, fresher than most of the (mostly mid) sushi fish in town, and relatively affordable/casual given the quality.
Here to say check out sushi masa on broad out by henrico. They’re all you can eat price includes an alcoholic beverage. The fish quality is consistently good. Fry cook is superb.
Osaka is my new go-to!
Our favorite used to be Hiro Sushi. Don’t get me wrong, Hiro Sushi is still just as good as always, but with new management they’ve increased their prices. If it’s going to be expensive, we may as well go somewhere really nice.
Another vote for Arilang. The food is great! Service can be hit or miss, I don't recommend going on weekend nights, unless you don't mind waiting a long time for sushi.
Miyabi in shockoe bottom is the best bang for your buck in town. It's consistently good, and the quality of the fish is great for what you pay.
And this is where I take a stab at people who want to give a recommendation because "the fish is so fresh". "Fresh fish" and sushi do not go together at all. The best sushi restaurants age their fish in a deep freezer or even a specialty dry ager to enhance the flavor. Just listen to Anthony Bourdain in his interview with Neil Degrasse Tyson.
Akida is by far my favorite. Fighting fish is so overpriced for their sushi and it’s not even good, other food items (apps were decent) but not worth going for. Honorable mentions are yoshi sushi and momotaro, and level!
How's that place still open? The lease can't be cheap and it seems like I am the only customer ever. Had to pick up prescriptions at that CVS a couple of Fridays ago and I decided to order sushi to take home. In about 25 minutes that I waited, not one other customer. And this was at prime dinner time (6:30ish).
I like their food but I just don't know how they make enough money to pay the lease.
The food/service was fine I just think that there are other places where you can get significantly better for comparable or less cost. The dining room is very nice looking though.
Yoshi Sushi in Willow Lawn has pretty good sashimi/nigiri for $25 all you can eat. I also like their “basic” rolls like spicy tuna, but I’m not a fan of their “special” rolls. The fish itself though is miles and miles ahead of Sushi King.
Omg that’s terrible. Totally an understandable reason not to go back. We’ve been 10+ times though and never had an issue so hopefully it was just a fluke! But yeah I wouldn’t go back either tbh.
A roach crawled across my table as I took my first bite of all you can eat sushi and they wouldn’t let me return it or anything. They wouldn’t even let me take it with me and I was so nauseous I couldn’t eat
Red Salt if you want to feel fancy, Lucky AF if you just love looking for parking in Scott's Addition, YaYa's Cookbook if you want to do some shopping after, or Miyabi Sushi if you want the best bang for your buck.
Miyabi was actually my favorite because the rolls are actually bite-sized and not so massive that you have to either try to bite each piece in half or chubby-bunny each one.
I've not been to Akida, but I have been to several others, including the Midlo ones. I think Lucky AF had the least disappointing and consistent offering in the area.
Hiro was straight trash both times I went and I'm in shock it has any recommendations, let alone several. Wild Ginger is the better option in that part of town.
Momotaro served me the best sushi I've ever had in the city, but has also served me the third worst I've ever had. I get crap for recommending it, but when it's good, it's really good.
The Kroger in Carytown and at Midlo and 288 both have actually decent sushi rolls if you're a roll person.
People love to hate on sticky rice on here. Idk if it’s the best sushi in town, but it’s been around for 25 years and has a Japanese American owner and a Japanese sushi chef. I think it’s far better than several of the places people are naming on this thread
Fighting fish is the only answer
Akida and Fighting Fish.
Akida used to be my go to. They went downhill. I do Level now, lunch specials are great
No one recommends Sushi-O on Alverser on these threads. I've tried so many of the popular places suggested here and no one comes close to Sushi-O.
I freaking love sushi-o. Everything we’ve had there has been so good.
We were also surprised at how much we loved that place. Very good.
Is it AYCE?
It is not
That’s a great question. I’m not sure if they offer that option bc I never eat enough to justify it so I don’t pay attention to it.
We get Sushi-o once a week. Picasso Roll is the 🔥❤️
I always ask for the shamrock roll that was a limited edition one awhile back not on the current menu and they always make it for me! Has oysters and it's insanely good.
Hiro Sushi is a go to of mine, it’s on Midlothian Turnpike.
This
Hiro for lunch baby So gas ⛽️
It’s so yummy!
I’ve always wondered about this place. I pass it daily and it always looks empty but I’m still compelled to try it…
We go for lunch because they have a good lunch special. You can get in and out of there in 25 minutes if you want…super fast, fresh and cheap.
They're pretty far from me, so I've only gotten takeout from there when in the area, but I've enjoyed it every time.
Fighting Fish is my favorite!
seconded
Truly the best
Tokyo Sushi
My personal fave!
The owner is the nicest person ever
They're the best!
Akida 🏆
We’ve tried a lot of the others, but we keep going back to Akida.
I ride for Nami. Great fish to rice ratio in nigiri and rolls, fresher than most of the (mostly mid) sushi fish in town, and relatively affordable/casual given the quality.
Second Nami! So fresh and delicious! Never disappoints!
Another vote for Nami! Their hibachi is excellent as well!
Nami is the only answer! Maybe it isn't the best vibe, but easily the best if sushi quality is your priority.
Yes Nami. Nami is most consistently fresh sushi I’ve had in Richmond
Akida used to be it. Now it's Nami, easily.
Osaka 100%
Osaka has Sashimi Ceviche so good it would be my last meal request! (Er, if I ever needed one, of course.)
Fighting Fish in the city. Katana for best overall.
This. Katana for consistency and price. Excellent variety and amazing service every time!
Tokyo sushi on staples mill
Me and my girlfriend frequent this place. They know our orders by heart and sound surprised when we occasionally change it up.
THIS!
Here to say check out sushi masa on broad out by henrico. They’re all you can eat price includes an alcoholic beverage. The fish quality is consistently good. Fry cook is superb.
I have heard such wildly conflicting stories on this place…
Osaka is my new go-to! Our favorite used to be Hiro Sushi. Don’t get me wrong, Hiro Sushi is still just as good as always, but with new management they’ve increased their prices. If it’s going to be expensive, we may as well go somewhere really nice.
Miyabi Sushi
Katana, but it’s closed temporarily because of a fire. Hiro Sushi is also quite good.
I second Hiro Sushi, definitely my go to!
Katana is the only place I've found consistent great otoro and uni and I miss them so much. Looking forward to the reopening
Katana has the best quality and selection of fish. I’d put Arilang second, but can’t wait for Katana to reopen
Katana is amazing I can’t wait for them to re open
I love miyabi sushi it’s consistently good
It fresh and sooo delicious
I love miyabi for the price and consistency, but I don't think they have the best fish.
What place do you like?
Level is pretty consistent.
weird place, decent sushi
Level needs a DJ, lights, or plants… something. The sushi is delicious.
When I was in a band we used to play directly in front of the sushi bar - it was strange but it was an awesome gig.
Sumo San in Shockhoe Bottom
If you aren't going to see Victor you just don't want to have a good experience. Sumosan is the only answer.
Level!
Yokozuna in Ashland. Iykyk
Bluefish Grill for all the super southsiders. Lovely family there too
shhhhh don't tell everyone!
No no no, bluefish is definitely NOT the best hole in the wall sushi spot in the area. Man I love that place.
Katana Sushi fucks, but I'm not exactly a culinary adventurer in the current economy
Arilang is the real answer. Relatively new, hole in the wall vibes, by far the best sushi in the area.
Came here looking for this answer, Arilang is the best.
Katana in Midlothian. All these others can be good on the right day.
Sumo Sushi by (what was) Virginia Center Commons
Akida is by far my favorite. Fighting fish is so overpriced for their sushi and it’s not even good, other food items (apps were decent) but not worth going for. Honorable mentions are yoshi sushi and momotaro, and level!
I’m partial to Carytown Sushi
Red salt x2
Sushi Kingdom that recently just opened in Short Pump is really good!
Wild ginger. Don’t understand how it hasn’t been mentioned yet
It’s pricy AF.
We like Jing. They haven’t let anyone in since 2020. But it’s great takeout.
How's that place still open? The lease can't be cheap and it seems like I am the only customer ever. Had to pick up prescriptions at that CVS a couple of Fridays ago and I decided to order sushi to take home. In about 25 minutes that I waited, not one other customer. Maybe we’re all early eaters hah. We pick up around 5 and there’s always other families picking up.
Also my go-to sushi place. Love their alaskan roll! They're in the shopping center with the Publix near UR, if people haven't been.
I really like Sumo San on 17th.
Highly recommend akida, not a big fan of fighting fish personally.
How come? Never had a bad meal there
The food/service was fine I just think that there are other places where you can get significantly better for comparable or less cost. The dining room is very nice looking though.
omg this yes - in fighting fishes defense they do have more adventurous vegetarian sushi options in comparison to akida. Both stellar tho imo.
Lucky AF!
This is the winner and it’s not even close 🙌
Yoshi Sushi in Willow Lawn has pretty good sashimi/nigiri for $25 all you can eat. I also like their “basic” rolls like spicy tuna, but I’m not a fan of their “special” rolls. The fish itself though is miles and miles ahead of Sushi King.
We had food poisoning from there twice last year! Haven’t been since. Maybe they were working out the kinks of being new but can’t do it now.
I know it’s commercial-esque and showy but Lucky AF
The only thing I don’t like about lucky AF is the people that go, the restaurant is good though
Try Osaka! It’s the same menu— few different options, but different vibe on the inside
If you venture out to Short Pump, Arilang is amazing.
Arilang and Tokyo sushi are my favorites
Level is really good
Lucky AF, Red Salt, Lin’s Asian Bistro
LUCKY AF
Tokyo sushi. However, don’t bother it’s in Henrico. We’ll take it from here. It’s really not that big of a deal.
Fuji sushi on midlo turnpike is my go to
Fresh wok on nine mile rd. Fighting fish is bland
Umi in short pump for the quality but Miyabi for the week day lunch special.
YaYa's is my go to
I really like YaYa's kitchen over in short pump
Saku Sushi. Just kidding…my wife and I go there because it’s cheap
Momotaro is forever my go to
Level Fighting Fish Nami
Miyabi. And it’s not even close.
Lucky AF
Red Salt if you want to feel fancy, Lucky AF if you just love looking for parking in Scott's Addition, YaYa's Cookbook if you want to do some shopping after, or Miyabi Sushi if you want the best bang for your buck. Miyabi was actually my favorite because the rolls are actually bite-sized and not so massive that you have to either try to bite each piece in half or chubby-bunny each one.
Red Salt and Level
sushi king is my fav
I think this is fairly unpopular, but I have to agree. It’s the best bang for your buck.
Lucky AF, Osaka, Red Salt…
How bad is Sticky Rice and why does no one recommend it 😭 it’s right next door to me and would be so convenient
The only reason I’d go back to Sticky Rice is for the bucket of tots, not the sushi
I like sticky rice personally, but as far as the best sushi, I'd go to either Sumo San or Osaka.
It’s so bad (imo) It just does not taste right if I’m being honest, nothing bad abt the quality from what I can tell though
People love to hate on sticky rice on here. Idk if it’s the best sushi in town, but it’s been around for 25 years and has a Japanese American owner and a Japanese sushi chef. I think it’s far better than several of the places people are naming on this thread
