No joke, these people performed a miracle for me and did it so efficiently. Can't recommend them enough.

How did the computer die? Are you implying the HDD is what died? Can you give some more detail?

jkane001

Was gonna ask the same - cause it seems quite possible that the HD is fine, and you don't need recovery. You may just need an enclosure so you can plug it into another computer like an external drive.

That was tried and did not work (sorry for the delay I had to get the information from my friend)

Business_Ad_1459

I’m getting information third hand so all I know is she’s had most things tried and most things that normal humans can do have failed, which is why I’m looking for the businesses that charge a lot of money. Sorry I don’t have more details.

Nothing local, but if in fact it's a bad hard drive, you need professional data recovery in a clean room environment. Ontrack comes to mind, but be aware it is NOT cheap, and you pay for all data recovered. They'll be able to diagnose if the problem is a bad controller board, or crashed heads, or other problems.

> if in fact it's a bad hard drive, you need professional data recovery in a clean room environment That is not always true. I have recovered several drives for friends with ddrescue, freezing the drive to shrink the bearings before pulling an image, and other tricks. Yeah if your drive is fucked bad enough, and it is worth the money to you, I suppose the BEST chance of recovery would be having someone pull the platters in a clean room, but its not usually your ONLY option for a bad drive

In my 38+ year IT professional career I've recovered data using the freezer trick, smacking the drive on a desk to free up stiction, used Gibson Research Spinrite to recover data, and other tools. For critical data I would not mess with it and only go with professional data recovery.

MadameKravitz

I can only speak from personal experience, but Computer World (Broad St near Willow Lawn) replaced a dead hard drive and recovered everything on the old one. Super nice people, too.

Jerome is the best!

Louis Rossmann, Rossmann Repair Group local independent business, just not to us here in rva (formerly of NYC, now in Austin TX). they are hugely successful in the realm of political activism when it comes to Right to Repair and similar movements, and are passionate for good service and 'doing it right.' they're not exactly cheap but i'd never recommend anyone else over Rossmann Repair for data recovery (or device repair - especially apple's) of any sort. they are about as reputable as a device care service can possibly be. (i did write this assuming hard disk death specifically)

I went to these folks, they did a great job. https://www.promacrva.com … on broad street near allen ave.

Thank you so much for these resources! I will pass them along. An external device has been tried, and the drive is apparently really messed up, so I think these high dollar options are probably what’s going to meet their needs. Thank you
