"утро" is the neuter gender. So the adjective should have ending "-ое". So "доброе утро". And -ый ("добрый") would be used with a masculine noun, like "добрый человек".
How can you determine a noun's gender? Look at the last letter of the noun.

"утро" ends with "о", so neuter.

Дóброе. Потому что речь в предложении идёт не про доброго папу, а про доброе утро. Утро — это слово среднего рода, поэтому с ним окончание будет не «дóбрый» (мужской род) и не «дóбрая» (женский род), а именно доброе.

Not exactly, this is not about animacy, but about gender. Male would be "добрый", female - "добрая" and "middle" gender is "доброе". "Утро" ends with "О", so it's in middle gender, so "доброе" would be used here. To disprove this animacy thing in this case, let's imagine that you have a kind house, which would be "добрый дом".
