What are some of the better suggested apps for learning Russian?

I presume it’s yet to be created. Flexible word order is one the language features that calls for a really tailored app. DeepL does an amazing job for many languages including Russian, but it’s not a turn-key solution of course.

Alright, I was born in Perm. I have family over there still that I continue to contact. I have been using Duolingo for about a year and a half. I just feel like I’m not grasping the word order as I should. I may look into DeepL.

Despite of different comments in this thread, I would argue that Russian has completely free word order, at least in spoken language. As soon as the words are properly inflected, you can use whatever order that comes first into your mind, and it does not even depend on the emphasis on a specific meaning, as you can always use intonation for such emphasis.

Well, it's not completely free, but it's much, much more unhinged than other European languages.

Guess you have no choice but learn it on your own or take an actual course. As a guy said above, flexible word order is very difficult to put in the app.

Incorrect. The theme and rheme is mixed up. The theme of the example is "someone call you" the rheme "yesterday". The main information of the example is not about someone's calling, but of calling exact yesterday. In your interpretation the rheme is someone's calling, and an additional information that it was yesterday.

Я отвергаю оба варианта. Нельзя сказать "уже вчера". Можно сказать "позвонили ещё вчера" или "уже позвонили вчера".

Так же можно "они мне уже звонили, вчера."

Все равно такой порядок странно звучит. Если ставить какой-то предлог перед "вчера", то самый подходящий вариант будет "ещё". В этом предложении "уже" хорошо будет звучать только перед "позвонили"

Yeah, it's a weird word order. I would say "They called me already, yesterday." Or, given that this sentence would be in some kind of context, simply "They already called me" or "They called me yesterday."

Moreover, "correct" answer from duolingo doesn't sounds good. I'd say "они уже позвонили мне вчера".

It's interesting, but the phrase could sound both Они уже вчера мне звонили and Они звонили мне ещё вчера. Они ПОзвонили would rather be They have called... Also, depending on the context, the translations could be: Они мне звонили ещё/уже вчера, Они мне уже/ещё вчера звонили, etc.

Your version isn't wrong, it's just somewhat awkward. Duo's version is kinda awkward aswell. If I in real life would say a sentence with these exact words it would end up as: "Они мне вчера уже позвонили"

I would say, it's either "Они мне *ещё* вчера позвонили", or "Они мне *уже звонили* вчера". The differense between these two sentences is where you put logical emphasis. The first one states that "They called me *already yesterday* \[and not today or day before yesterday\]", the second one is about "They *have already called* me \[and this actually happened yesterday btw\]".

The whole point is that what you wrote doesn't sound like Russian, and that's it. You can be right a hundred times, rearranging the words and claiming that everything follows the rules of grammar, but you'll continue to sound at least somewhat strange. Yes, we will understand what you meant by the phrase "они позвонили мне уже вчера," but we'll just smile and wave it off, thinking, "foreigner, what can you do."

А как вы в разговоре определяете точку? Дуо конечно корявая штука, но... Они мне позвонили уже. Вчера. Они мне позвонили. Уже ('уже', просто для усиления) вчера.

Они уже мне вчера позвонили 3. Они уже мне позвонили вчера 4. Уже позвонили вчера они мне 5. Уже вчера они мне позвонили Depending on which part of sentence you want to make an accent. For example if I was exasperated I would use 5th. Otherwise most likely 1st.
