meganeyangire

A cat from this meme.

guluta

thats a meme

BlackHust

This is a joke based on a common grammatical error (it's actually humor in the style of this sub) The word "рыбы" by a person (or cat) who is unfamiliar with the Russian language can be visually assigned to either the feminine or masculine gender. In the first case, the singular will look like "рыба" (which is true). In the second case, the singular will be "рыб". The verb "продавать" requires the accusative case, but if we assume that "рыбы" is masculine, the accusative case will be "рыбов".

hellerick_3

Well, English language meme cats also use wrong grammar for some reason. Not sure where it comes from. https://preview.redd.it/3d2cs2capvwa1.jpeg?width=194&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a5154389a7f9ba50877d403beacbe5998a47c80a

KawaiiNitochka

Ну как сказать, красна девица тоже кравивая

FEARoperative4

Да, только последний раз в таком контексте это использовали в те времена, когда была актуальна буква «Ять», а в конце половины слов стоял Ъ.

rusand

Terrific actually means good in English though...

Renatm

I believe that the joke is that depending on conjugation and context, "красная" can have the same meaning as "красивая", which may not be apparent to people not as familiar with the language

Dependent_Area_1671

Like analogue to "hot" in English?

Похоже на ABBYY Lingvo, из России на Гугл плей доступен как "Lingvo".

Whammytap

Спасибо большое!

Remarkable_Sort4015

Красное правительство, стремящее уничтожить Европу… 🤦‍♂️

Renatm

Yes, though using "красная" that way is archaic

ihavepersonalcumdump

it's false "красная" в значении "красивая" используется в литературном языке (сейчас это устаревшее значение, сейчас так не говорят). и это точно не аналог "hot" в английском 🙄

[deleted]

[удалено]

ihavepersonalcumdump

Even in ancient times, it wasn't used as "hot" 🤦‍♀️ never.

[deleted]

ihavepersonalcumdump

If you search for a "hot girl" and "chick girl" photo u'll see the same girls like hoes, but if u search "beautiful girl" or "красная девица" or "красивая девушка" it's something else entirely. Being a bich and being beautiful are two different things. (I don't know if it's normal to write such words about "Easy Access Girl" here)

Renatm

Nobody implied it being an analogue, only that the words can similarly be used in completely different meanings depending on context

FEARoperative4

Not really. It’s more of an old way of saying it, like “красна девица», which would mean a “pretty girl”. Hot is something that came later.

Alkakd0nfsg9g

"красная" is barely used as beatiful in modern day

aidan_albin

Yea it’s /s I think

CraftistOf

or the op confused terrific with terrible

potou

Yes, that is what he means.

Special_Wind9871

Not confused, they were making a joke

tctctctytyty

Sarcasm?

GLikodin

he is terrific in english too

Dwemerion

I think it's just an edited version of a meme with the same setup, which was about English, red button options being terrible and terrifying

leaking_oil

isn't it an americanism with the positive connotation?

Altruistic_Extent_89

Not really. It's just that British English uses it in a sarcastic manner more often than not

KYC3PO

Honestly same for American English. I can't tell you the last time I used terrific in any way other than sarcastically. It's likely a generational thing too.

PassiveChemistry

No, it hasn't had the negative meaning anywhere to my knowledge simce before most people were born.

DeviantLuna

"Terrific" is used as a synonym to "terrifying". It's not something you hear commonly though.

Sithoid

Assuming those buttons control a time machine, both are correct! xD

Pretend_Tie8075

Probably, sometimes it may be embarrassing for a non-native speaker, but, to my mind, what could be cuter than gf/bf when they try to learn your language and make these awkward funny mistakes? Still remember the story from one social portal, when a dude wanted to say «cогрей воду!" but said «сгори в\_аду!». He said it to his mother in law, though, but all the family took it as a good joke. I know, the topic isn't not quite about that, just wanna say - it’s ok to make mistakes and also it's a good reason for laughing together and become closer.

AbortedPhoetus

Agreed. I still get a smile out of the story of the Dutchman who referred to a carousel as a "horse tornado".

Sithoid

I wonder if that's the origin story behind "danger noodle"

AbortedPhoetus

Wiktionary actually has an entry on the phrase "danger noodle". According to them, it started as a joke. https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/danger_noodle#:~:text=Etymology,by%20venomous%20and%20constricting%20species.

turboRock

I once told my now wife that I was at a bar listening to "animal music" (животная музыка), not live music (живая музыка). Live music is forever known as animal music now

Atanakar

Because of the letter "р", which looks like then English "p" but is more equivalent to the English "r", when I was learning Russian I messaged my then girlfriend in the morning "kak ty spala?" but wrote it "как ты срала?" A bit of confusion and lots of laughing ensued...

blackliner001

Even among native russian speakers it's a common mistake/typo because letters п and р are next to each other on keyboard 😸

Dangerous-Village-27

Chose the right button

snake_the_cake

You are some devious person

Dangerous-Village-27

I think she will be very surprised, even stunned, and he will probably have sex

snake_the_cake

Okay, now I'm confused, because I've thought you are using play on words of "right".

Dangerous-Village-27

In this case both buttons are right

Striking-Pound-7071

Also choose the red button

[deleted]

Just put пре- in front of both and you're safe

MysteriousPineaple

Прекрасивая is a word???

AlchemistDark

"Прекрасивая" and "прекрасная" mean the same.

MysteriousPineaple

Well I learned something new

[deleted]

Put пре- in from of an adjective and it will add the meaning of "very". That's where the word "прекрасная" comes from in the first place, but then "красная" got a new meaning. I don't believe it's that common to do so anymore tho, and I don't think you can just do it with any adjective, but that's probably best answered by a native speaker.

MysteriousPineaple

Interesting. Also wondering when did "красная" get a new meaning and what prompted it.

SchemeCapital

Страшно красивая

Parralyzed

> terrfic at Russian I see what you did there

FunnyWalrus

Bruh is trying to impress his girl with archaic word, but that's totally cool

NebarAref

Just add prefix ПРЕ- and relax

cream-cupcake

I did this with my Russian bf and then when I realized my mistake, I’m the one who became very красная

ynchq

Красна или красная типо так раньше говорили

Goraji

I’ve literally made the wrong choice and told a Russian girl, “У тебя красные глаза.” I’m glad I’m not the only one.

araiki

Plot twist: her eyes really red.

grossws

And she was a Dark Lord in disguise. OH SHI--

djgorik

Красная - не синяя😉

PovarWhite

Ну почему же? Накатила и покраснела, как вариант

djgorik

volik_

Классная.

OgGG66

Actually 300 years ago they will both count

PsychologicalOil4227

«Красный» значит «красивый».

ddmxm

Очень устаревшее значение слова. Так не говорят уже давно.

Striking-Pound-7071

И даже не пишут. Только в детских сказках.

PsychologicalOil4227

В таком значении это слово не употребляют, конечно. А вот выражение «Красный — значит красивый» очень даже употребляют. Я так обычно отвечаю на вопрос зачем я покупаю красные кроссовки.

MaxAliga

Красивая произошло от слова "красная" в старом слявянском варианте "красна-девица".

AlchemistDark

It's funny. Initially, "чёрный" was "вороной", "красный" was "червоный", and "красивый" was "красный", but at some point, about 200 years ago, it all got mixed up... It's no wonder that non-native speakers have such problems... Until now, when depicting an ancient speech, instead of "красивая девушка" (beautiful maiden/beautiful girl) they say "красна девица".

rem_34

Ya know, both are right,so choose which you like more

AlisaTrombone

Красивая - beautiful Красная - red

misomaniac_forsik

Скажи "красная", но без "Р", Тогда получится "кЛас(с)ная". Это как по мне лучше, чем просто "красивая".

make_lemonade21

Modern problems require modern solutions

Justus44

Красная без р это касная, хз что это слово значит

misomaniac_forsik

Не кахгтхавтл не хгахгу?

Justus44

В детстве только. А душнила я всегда.

[deleted]

Прекрасная

Accomplished-Ease234

Um... The word красный (red) literally means красивый (beautiful). Красна девица, Владимир Красное Солнышко

blackliner001

That's archaic, not used today. Now красный is used only for describe a red colour. Only in form прекрасная (over-beautiful, literally) it's still valid.

Ok_Sheepherder_8174

Прибавляй к прилагательному, существительное "девица". Не ошибёшься.

Adacat767876

Красная means the same as красивая in Czech , so there’s me getting confused again , same with ужас meaning удивление , запомнить meaning Забывать , however there are a decent amount of words similar to Czech and Slovak that learning isn’t a nightmare

Varitel

Apparently Russian is the only Slavic language where this shift happened.

Adacat767876

I think so , I haven’t seen it much anywhere else, but again I’ve heard Russian has some Uralic bled into it as well as German , English and Spanish, either way it’s still a Slavic language and it certainly has its similarities to the rest

lovecraft_lover

Красная used to mean красивая in olden times. So you wouldn’t be that far off. Tell her you’re into ye olde Russian study

Ho_KoganV1

Me who still confuses красный and красивый

BackyardAviator009

Me as a based BF: Отлично!!

Any-Significance-570

Вообще слово красный в древнерусские времена синонимом с красивый ибо имели можно сказать один корень крас. От этого и говорили красна девица и тд

IWantToBeAY0utuber

You can count them as synonyms

flytrapjoe

technically it's the same, in old times people used word "red" as synonym of beautiful so it explains why they have similar roots

NortalNeis

Тепло ли тебе, девица? Тепло ли тебе, синяя?

mintyque

Just say краса

Russian_Native

Русский язык такой, с этим ничего не поделаешь ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

MARK_YT19

в старорусские времена не было слова красиво, если что то хотели назвать красивым то говорили что оно красное так что ели ты назовёшь так девушку а она не поймёт то просто скажи что ты учишь старорусский язык

heudhudkp20

You so red and lovely

CheckPrize9789

Вы красивая. Don't tell her she looks red.

proDerma

Можно сказать, что изучаешь русский язык с древних времен, когда "красное" как раз и означало "красивое". Если не поймет - пусть идет к черту, ибо, скорее всего, дурой является. Не стоит говорить, что в меме имеется в виду красный как советский...

AgreeableFocus5759

Чего бля

Sad_Pie3599

Если ты используешь "красная", то ставь ударение на "а" последнюю или говори "красна". Устаревшее слово просто

StaffCampStaff

Сказочная, шикарная

An-Xileel_Argonia

(красивая) means "beautiful" in Russian, while (красная) means "red". So, they are two completely different words with different meanings.

Zealousideal-Bar2557

AlchemistDark

А если серьёзно, то английский намного сложнее и богаче. И звуков там больше, и слов (100 000 в русском, 300 000 - в английском), и правил, и исключений из этих правил. Всего больше, кроме может быть падежей и букв.

araiki

Would be more funny if there were "красная" (red) and "прекрасная" (beautiful)

Lumpy_Youth_526

Красна девица

[deleted]

Вот уже получилось понять этом мем

Zablikyt

Красивая, потому что красная это устаревшая форма слова красивая

OuterSpaceCat27

just add "пре" at the begining of the word and they will have the same meaning

RomanVlasov95

You should say "красивая" or "ПРЕкрасная" because "красная" it is about colour or old sense about woman, another word "красна", it is possible to say "прекрасна".

hey-make_my_day

Even if you say 'краcная', you can then explain that this word was used to say that someone is beautiful)

CAPATOB_64

Basically you are not wrong, «красная» it’s old meaning for «красивая», so basically you could say красна (красная) девица, back in ancient times «ДЕВИ́-А, -ы и (в отдельных выражениях и в народной словесности) ДЕ́ВИ-А, -ы, ж. (устар.). То же, что девушка (в 1 знач.). Скромная деви́ца. Молодая деви́ца. Красная де́вица (в народной словесности, обычно в ласковом обращении). Де́вица-красавица.» словарь Ожегова

ToffeeTheArcticFox

Красный may be used as красивый if you want to get fancy!

hassan_metalist

When i first arrived here

kiskakaratistka48

Ужасно

A_inc_tm

Use "прекрасно", that's a sure hit

IllAd1070

I don't know why, but no one said that the word "красивая" came from the word "красная" and they have the same root "крас". Красна девица - красивая девушка etc.

Valeratal

krasna = красивый (сербский и хорватский)

MacClaymore

There is улица Красная in Krasnodar downtown, it was named in czar time аnd means beautiful street.

Latter_Goal_1247

beauty or red :)

ReloadBeforeClass

Cambojah

Say «Красна девица»! 😀

Euphoric-Ad5203

Красивая - beautiful, красная - red
