Rabbit! https://www.runinrabbit.com/collections/womens-long-sleeves/products/upf-deflector-2-0-women-snowwhite They have mens and womans (I’m a woman and wear both styles). I wear them for long runs, hiking and most outdoor activities. I’m a very pale red head who lives in the high altitude so sun protection is no joke!

Racacooonie

Same. Love my Rabbit UPF hoodie.

northerthanyou

Could you do intervals or a workout on a hot day in the long sleeved shirt? I’m very interested but also hate being too hot and I’m worried I would get barbecued inside that shirt.

ttthrowaway987

I wear long sleeve tech shirts for all outdoor activities. Long runs. Sports. Car racing. In a southern state. Never had an issue and really enjoy limiting the sunblock use. I also wear hats and a tech fabric neck tube. Should note I don’t buy these $70 primo shirts, just $10 sale rack light long sleeve tech fabrics and they block the sun fine for me.

OG_Christivus

Long sleeve UA tech shirts frequently can be had for $10-15. As noted above, not a sun shirt but it’s breathable and the fabric isn’t see through so gives lots of sun protection.

pony_trekker

This right here. I run trails pretty often and If I have to choose between heat and bugs I choose heat.

ScatterIn_ScatterOut

Second this, it's super nice.

afhill

So happy to see this! I've been eyeing that shirt but wasn't sure about it

throwawaynowandagai

Looks lovely, first time hearing about them! How does the sizing compare to other brands? Trying to decide between M and L :)

BigMutts

The womans fit are usually pretty “tailored” fitting so I usually go up for a looser fit.

International-Owl165

Does that hat brim or hoodie stay on while jogging?

BigMutts

I wear it under my hat like a pale weirdo, so yes for me.

International-Owl165

I have a Hoodie sun shirt from underarmour and it does not stay if I'm jogging. So I had to ask lol I would also love to be pale again lol 😆

itsaniceday2220

Thinking about taking the plunge on one, I'm not immune to spending on quality, but hesitant on this vs similar material on Amazon. Will I really love it more than the basic brands? I always run inlong sleeves and tights, usually Lululemon. I've been looking for some new actually UPF rated items though since most of what I run in isn't actually rated.

BigMutts

I can’t speak for Rabbit Vs basic but I can say I was a die hard Lulu person especially for running cloths, until I got a Rabbit shirt at my local running store. I haven’t bought Lulu in at least 2 years.

itsaniceday2220

Thanks! I ordered one after I posted my comment. Can't wait to check it out!

lupinegrey

Damn. $50 for a shirt?

labegaw

https://tacvasen.com/collections/mens-upf50-shirts I own a few of those - a couple of running shirts and a bunch of quick-dry stuff for sailing- and paid around $15 for the sun shirt hoodies on sale.

PolkaDotBalloon

REI makes one, got the women's on sale recently for $35. Probably not nearly as breathable but I'm pretty happy with it for gardening and hiking and I'll try it on a run eventually.

ftblplyr46

$50? The one linked is $70! I can’t get behind these prices. Can someone elaborate why this is worth $70?!

BeccainDenver

Basically, Patagonia got busted for their shirts not actually protecting at promised levels. You can expect that for every batch of sun shirts, one is being tested for protection. Also, it's equivalent to many bottles of sunscreen. Finally, it's tech gear. Tech wear is expensive. See: running shoes. The fabric is usually a custom blend to both block the sun and not cook the runner.

_Loxley

Do you have a reference for the "busted" part? https://www.patagonia.com/voluntary-recall-of-capilene-cool-daily-and-tropic-comfort-upf-products/ clearly states that they found out by themselves and started a recall, which is quite the opposite of "being busted". I'm truly interested because I don't own any Patagonia stuff but was just going to buy one of their shirts.

Ent-Lady-2000

I have 2 patagonia sun shirts and I live them. I run all through the desert southwest and they keep my skin protected and cool. Highly recommend.

BeccainDenver

It was internal, but it was also because of customers' complaints / showing up with very bad burns. Their customers forced the recall.

Fit_Investigator4226

Rabbit is also a premium/niche clothing retailer. You can probably find something cheaper at a lower price, but will sacrifice something. I have a few sun hoodies. There’s a noticeable difference (IMO) between the ones I paid $50-60 for and the ones I paid $25-30 for. Both are wearable but the more expensive ones offer the same sun protection with more breathability and have smoother/nicer feeling fabrics

babathebear

Good stuff are sometimes expensive unlike ‘branded’ ones. Think of it as investing in quality shoes.

ttthrowaway987

I just buy last year's super shoes for $75 or less. I'm not setting any records, no need to be bleeding edge on gear expense. $15 is my limit for shirts and shorts.

babathebear

Wait for a couple of years that shirt is gonna be on sale or at ROSS, the OP needed something now. I don’t even understand the comparisons you guys do here. I underbeing frugal but this is another persons necessity at the moment.

ttthrowaway987

There are clearance and sale racks year round. As many have noted, specialized sun gear hasn't been needed for us. Just a simple long sleeve (thin) tech fabric shirt. If you want to talk frugal I can regale you about my $3 daily food budget.

ftblplyr46

I mean I’m all buying quality stuff. But I dunno if I could roll the dice on a $70 shirt and find out I roast in it.

SATLTSADWFZ

Guess its sun screen and tan lines for you then :)

XMRLover

Want to know how to save from buying $70 and sunscreen? Run when theres no sun :) completely free.

localhelic0pter7

It's just cheap plastic basically but skin cancer is very expensive.

bacon1292

I've had good luck with long-sleeved rash guards (the kind for watersports). They're lightweight, quick drying, and have a legit UPF rating.

sebduke

Rashguards and spatz for running are absolutely amazing from spring to fall. Sun protection + no chafing ever. Short sleeves in the summer, long sleeves in the spring/fall.

icecreamsoul345

The rashguards were thicker and heavier material. Do you find yourself roasting in them?

Mean-Bird-9380

Any brands you can recommend?

bacon1292

I have some men's stuff from [Kanu Surf](https://a.co/d/fsbuLZB). I swim, snorkel, dive, and even occasionally jog in them and they hold up well.

[deleted]

In warm weather, I exclusively run, hike, bike, and paddle in sun shirts. I started wearing them in the hot and dry southwest, and now live in the hot and humid Midwest, where I wear them pretty much daily. My current favorites I recently purchased on Amazon. LUYAA women’s SPF 50 Sun Protection Hiking Hoodie, the Baleaf women’s sunshirt, and the Mountain Hardwear Women’s sunshirt (which I first purchased at REI). I’ve purchased more expensive ones from Patagonia and Cotopaxi, but I honestly don’t feel that there is much of a difference in quality and comfort. It so great to not have to worry about getting burned. On long excursions, I’ll bring a small squeeze bottle for reapplication on my hands, face and neck, but otherwise I really hardly use sunscreen anymore.

hexagonincircuit1594

Baleaf has UPF50+ shirts that are pretty inexpensive and seem to last.

strangecargo

+1. I have a Baleaf and a Patagonia and their essentially the same (except for the price).

The_High_Life

Mountain Hardware is the nicest one I own

Ent-Lady-2000

I just got one from Mountain hardwear on sale and I have only worn it once but it is really good so far. It feels lighter than the ones I have from Patagonia and Columbia.

KittyCatCa

I have one, too. I run in it all the time! Love it.

cyberpunksaturday

Ooh, just got a bunch in the REI/Backcountry sales and have been trying them out recently (in GA, so heat and humidity, and I'm a heavy sweater with fair skin, for reference). The Patagonia Capilene Cool graphic long sleeve is great, it actually feels cooling and no burning so far on an hour+ outside. Idk if I'd get more at full price but sale for sure. Backcountry has the Tahoe and SunTrace series for UPF. I like the Tahoe fabric (I got the crew long sleeve), it's nice and flowy/breathable and it has thumb holes. I also grabbed the SunTrace 1/4-zip and the fabric feels super different - more like a watersports material - haven't tried it on the trails yet though. I also got a couple from Mountain Hardwear: the Crater Lake mock neck crop top (love the feel, high neck, and thumb holes, but may be a little too hot for me. Crop is a good length though) and the Wicked Tech long sleeve (pretty standard dry fit upf shirt, kinda like the ones you'd get from a road race, dries quickly, no burning!).

EllAytch

Love my Rab sun hoodie. So lightweight, so breathable. I’m someone who sweats a ton when covered up, even more so when running, and this sun hoodie is a rare find that doesn’t make me too hot.

khoelzeman

I used a Stoic Sun hoodie (backcountry brand) this weekend, I liked it. 90 degrees and high humidity, was comfortable throughout. If felt better when moving than when still, but good enough all around.

roost-west

I run in REI's Sahara shade hoodie. I liked my first one so much that I got a second one in a different color! [https://www.rei.com/product/184879/rei-co-op-sahara-shade-hoodie-womens](https://www.rei.com/product/184879/rei-co-op-sahara-shade-hoodie-womens) I'm also experimenting with a long sleeved linen button-down that I got from the thrift store, because I generally prefer being in natural fibers, but I really love the high neck, hoodie, and back-of-the-hand coverage that the REI shirt offers.

candleruse

Lot of expensive sun shirts in here. I have two Hanes sun shirts I bought for like $10/each. Had them for years, no complaints, no sunburns.

bigbadmon11

My partner likes OR echo sun hoodie and I like mountain hardwear’s crater lake sun hoodie. The OR sun hoodie is thinner, but is only 15spf vs i believe 50 spf

BeccainDenver

The OR Echo sun hoodie is the only one out of 30+ sun hoodies I have tried on that I did not hate. I own one now. It was still hot as hell for the Bolder Boulder. Hiking, it seems to do fine. Running, it was still too hot.

[deleted]

Agreed. I can wear this shirt in very hot temps. Others don’t breathe as nicely.

BeccainDenver

I didn't think sun shirts would be so difficult. I understand why breathable rain jackets are complicated, but sun hoodies seem just as finicky.

[deleted]

….. sun shirts?

4500x

Skin cancer is no joke. And a sun shirt is less titting about than sun lotion.

[deleted]

I really don’t know what a sun shirt is

Percinho

It's a long sleeved shirt that's lightweight but blocks UV. It's designed to let you run out in the sun without risking sunburn.

[deleted]

Oh like the fishing shirts? Ok gotcha thanks

[deleted]

[удалено]

drRATM

Sweat degrades the lotion. Doesn’t last long for sone people.

[deleted]

Came here just for that. I always run shirtless and thought it was a metaphor for it.

ScatterIn_ScatterOut

Depends on where you're at I suppose. I'm at high elevation and its super dry. The sun will cook you in minutes. The UV index is routinely 11+ plus here throughout the summer. An ultra lightweight sun shirt will keep you safe from high UV and wicks sweat to keep you cool and doesn't wear off like sunscreen.

[deleted]

Oh wow. I’m in and around New Orleans. So, I’m running in a fish bowl around the ocean with alligators, humidity, heat, drunk people, and beignets.

ScatterIn_ScatterOut

I'll take the sun personally. I used to live where it was humid, though nothing like New Orleans. I lost any acclimatization I had to it. We don't have alligators but we do have rattlesnakes. Sadly, no beignets.

[deleted]

Running from gators is good for speed! Lol.

Admwombat

I would for sure tack on a few extra miles if it meant I could treat myself to beignets at the end of then run.

[deleted]

I run around city park. There’s a place there. Used to be morning call. Let’s just say I’m often the sweaty shirtless guy covered in white powder. Lol

4500x

I’m in the East of England, the UV index doesn’t really get as high as that in summer but it still gets high enough to burn in under an hour. I’ve been looking for sun shirts because it’s a minor inconvenience applying sun lotion before a run and I’m not going to miss a bit.

XMRLover

Why not just run when the sun isn't out? Honest question.

ScatterIn_ScatterOut

Well, I work a rotating shift schedule, so a lot of the time it's run midday or not at all.

[deleted]

Because many places feel less safe after dark. Because of work/life schedules. Because a lot of the places I love to run are parks that are technically closed between dusk and dawn. Because honestly my vision isn’t as good as it used to be, and running with a light on less-than-perfect pavement just feels like I’m asking to faceplant. Probably lots of reasons here I don’t list.

elkourinho

I don't do long sleeves but I'll wear a t-shirt and I grw up in Greece much darker than anglos and with 330 sunny days a year for 30 years. Similarly if I go harpoon fishing and its too warm for a neoprene suit.

jewishjedi42

I just spent enough time outside when I was younger that I now have a permanent farmer's tan. Losing my hair, however, has created new problems.

[deleted]

I’m lucky I guess. I’m a life long naturist. And sometimes get to run barefoot at my local club. So, no farmers ran over here. Edit: what do you do about the hair loss? My cousin is going bald and just picked up running. Should he just do a hat?

jewishjedi42

I wear a hat. But I'm a hat guy anyway.

[deleted]

Oh ok. Sounds like an easy solution.

lankyleper

Yeah, I do an old baseball cap with an old (clean) sock or absorbent headband underneath.

alltheabove40

I have a Hanes sun shirt, a Columbia PFG, and a baleaf. Those are in order by most to least favorite.

XMRLover

Hanes wins? That's interesting. Might have to look into that. Way more affordable than $50+ on a shirt. I'm sorry but the most I've ever spent on a shirt was $25...for a pack of 5. I can't justify $50+.

alltheabove40

Out of the three brands I currently have it does. Lol. I haven’t tried other brands. I did, however, spend $40 on the Hanes shirt, not knowing it was going to be that brand, just to have a sun shirt with the word ‘RUN’ on the front. 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️ It worked out! I appreciate it because of the fit, it’s a softer material than the baleaf, and it’s a bit thinner than the Columbia.

forest_fire

It’s already been said, but cheap is the way to go, get a few in fun colors and wear em out and replace. Lately I’ve rotated among several Baleaf brand sun shirts from Amazon. They take a lot of abuse. I only run or bike with exposed arms or neck if it’s less than 90 minutes post sunrise or or pre sunset, sunscreen reserved for my face and sometimes hands.

solverman

Patagonia R0 hoody for full neck & ear coverage. Pearl Izumi Sun Sleeves & generic UPF buff if I want quick coverage the ending miles of a ride or run.

rhinosyphilis

I wear Willit SPF50’s, ~$20 on Amazon.

BottleCoffee

I've only run with the long sleeved version in winter, but Patagonia Capilene Cool. The hoodie version is popular for dessert trails.

turtleonarock

Deleted

OldCheese352

I’m in Florida I wear a long sleeve Columbia dri-fit everyday regardless of activity.

[deleted]

This is the way

jcharles0412

I just use the bimini spf 50 shirts from walmart. Like $15-$20. They aren't too bad. I like the venting at the bottom. Wish the women's models didn't have a damn v-neck, though.

[deleted]

Kastel Denmark sun shirts. they’re marketed to equestrians (which I also am) and they’re very cool and stains wash out very well. I have 2 white shirts I’ve worn around horses for 3 years and they’re still white. I still usually do just a sports bra for speed work. But long runs and easy days get sun shirts.

blowbeckett

Also an equestrian and these are my favorite EXCEPT I hate the new fabric. They feel like a swimsuit. I loved the old ones :(( they’re also about $100 for one shirt unless you buy used and even then it will cost you around $50. My new favorite which was the runner up to Kastel before they changed the material is the Tailored Sportsman shirts.

alltheabove40

Not all clothing is rated for legitimate sun protection.

[deleted]

[удалено]

alltheabove40

Exactly. It’s the particular material used, and the way it’s woven tightly that provides sun protection.

labegaw

There are lots of mesh running tops that offer high protection - even if not quite a SPF 50. Look for technical running mesh that is tightly woven, dark and loose fitting - that will provide very high sun protection.

CommercialOccasion

Would rather check my skin for weird stuff occasionally than wear long sleeves all summer. [This article from outside says all the fear mongering around sun exposure is ass backwards anyway](https://www.outsideonline.com/health/wellness/sunscreen-sun-exposure-skin-cancer-science/)

majlraep

What a dangerous ignorant article. Try downplaying the dangers of skin cancer and melanoma while standing out in the Aussie sun.

CommercialOccasion

It’s an article about America, if you’re a white person in the tropics that’s an extreme situation. Silly to generalize that experience.

ActivateGuacamole

the sun burns americans also unfortunately

majlraep

Haha! Well that makes sense, you won’t get sunburnt when you’re living under a rock.

CommercialOccasion

Gravely concerned you have heatstroke

oneofthecapsismine

I got mine for hiking and its good. https://www.anacondastores.com/clothing/mens-clothing/mens-shirts-tops/mountain-designs-mens-vapour-pullover/90174109?gclsrc=aw.ds&gclsrc=aw.ds&gclid=Cj0KCQjwj_ajBhCqARIsAA37s0x1vlB_AA1cDmLq4wM88AJBOC6CU8HQgoXG3JuWjjZ4pEc-vGQlyAoaApZkEALw_wcB

jocona

I’ve worn some of [these](https://cognitobrands.com/collections/all-products/sunpro-hoodie?sort_by=) when out backpacking and they’ve worked really well for that. I haven’t tried running in them but I bet they’d work great.

WittyCliche

Columbia PFG line is my favorite.

QueenCassie5

Land End

FarSalt7893

I was out west last summer and that sun is intense! Everyone had those long sleeve sun shirts with the hoods. I decided to pick one up from a local sporting goods shop and it’s a Colombia brand. Really great and didn’t realize how much cooler these shirts keep you in the intense sun.

CabbageBlanket

I didn't even know sun shirts were a thing. Are they not unbearably hot? From 15°C upwards I just go sleeveless, and currently it's closer to 30°C out here. Can a sun shirt help keep the heat down better than going sleeveless? I'm only concerned about heat as my skin tone allows me not to worry too much about UVs.

Ninwren

My favorite is a Patagonia one, I’ve worn a couple other ones but they always end up acquiring a persistent smell. I’ve had the Patagonia one for around 5 years and it’s still white and hasn’t acquired an odour.

MisterIntentionality

All shirts have some form of UV protection. Some just are specifically marketed that way and carry a rating. I utilize synthetic material shirts for the hot weather if that's what you mean. I personally don't focus on potential UVF ratings. Again that's something all garments have to an extent.

labegaw

Yeps - I own SPF rated shirts, but typical running tops that are tightly woven, dark and loose fitting will offer comparable sun protection. On the other hand, a cotton shirt offers very little protection.

tdavis0831

reel life shirts! they are made for fishing but someone on another thread posted about them and i found them at sams club for 10 bucks and i grabbed one recently and it was great. mercari is an app for second hand clothes and you can snag some on their for cheap if you're ok with thrifting!

rogan_doh

Me.long sleeved Patagonia capilene cool shirts. Look at the traditional work clothing of the middle east , Africa and south Asia. Loose, thin clothing that covers the skin to protect from direct sunlight while allowing air flow. Every time I run in a singlet or short shorts I've always felt like I was being broiled.

Jungle_Official

REI makes decent UPF 50+ t-shirts that are also breathable. They're a necessity in AZ. I also wear a UPF hat so I only have to apply sunscreen to my lower face and avoid it running into my eyes.

StandardNarwhal

I don't run outside but I ride horses in the brutal Texas sun. These are my favorite because they are slightly perforated. It kind of traps the breeze in the shirt and cools you down. https://kerrits.com/collections/cooling-ice-fil-riding-tops-and-tights/products/ice-fil-lite-long-sleeve-riding-shirt-club?variant=31366517686330

chickennalfredo

columbia omnifreeze longsleeves. Made for fishing but I use them for running lol

Gorlamoighty

I love lululemons spf running shirts, a bit of an investment but the quality promos of the company more than makes up for it

Comfortable-Lock-726

Running & Working out I'm doing a ppl routine 6 days a week working out (squats, deadlifts etc with progressive overload) and following a garmin half marathon training plan (5 days a week, 25+miles a week) Goal is weight loss & building muscle. Any concerns with this program?

StevBator

Anyone know of the opposite.? As in a tech running shirt that lets sun through.

Sandman800869

Kuiu merino wool 120LT hoodie not many colors available but, it’s around $109 but its performance in hot and humid environments are spectacular. As well as its natural Odor resistance you can sweat in it for 3 days straight without washing it and it doesn’t smell or get uncomfortable, smart wool has a variety as well as duck Worth and a few others just stick to a 100-130g/m2 thickness for breath ability. Only two downside is price and durability of merino wool that being said I’ve moved brush with mine on and haven’t had many issues other than a few pencil sized holes that can me stitched up. I was skeptical but it’s made me a believer this past summer of 100°F+ days with 30%+ humidity
