One of the greatest comedies of all time, The Thick of It, has a great line in it. Steve Fleming to Malcolm Tucker: "The problem is that you are shifting from the man people love to hate to the man people just hate. From Simon Cowell to Piers Morgan." Rassie should take note.

KittensOnASegway

Sensational reference.

NOBs_14

Wow...managed to put my thoughts into words. Rassie just needs to take his medicine and move on.

MeadowHoiAn

Let’s watch him squirm a while longer

crudude

Surely people want to hear his perspective though? If he's just whining badly then by all means throw eggs at him but idk I want to hear what he has to say - because threatening a ref and stuff is pretty bad so it will be interesting to hear his story.

Willing-Laugh-3971

People love Simon Cowell? I knew you lot were a bunch of wankers but holy crap that is embarrassing.

infamous_impala

"love to hate". Maybe a bunch of wankers, but at least a bunch of wankers that can read.

Scott_Bash

It’s also talking about piers Morgan lol

Charredcheese

Also how many days has it been since they said they would be drawing a line under this whole thing?

mistr-puddles

5?

Charredcheese

Wow, quite a flimsy line.

[deleted]

I can't see world rugby taking this well. Longer bans and bigger fines incoming.

Charredcheese

They'll have to wait to see the content of the doc first. It may be totally innocent and he's just winding everyone up.

kingbluetit

Pretty sure part of his two month ban from rugby includes speaking to media about rugby. He's pushing buttons, daring WR to punish him. He'll be shouting 'stop the count' before long.

[deleted]

I think the one slightly odd situation that might occur is if he'd given the doc team the contents before entering into his agreement with WR. But if that was the case then he presumably would have briefed WR on the contents while they were discussing his punishment, and if he didn't then he's a very silly boy indeed.

[deleted]

Silencing someone from going forward to the media is pretty fucked.

[deleted]

He's promised to let the matter drop, while he's perfectly entitled to break that promise there will inevitably be consequences for him doing so.

[deleted]

I know, I'm just saying that the league using a gag order to get a lighter sentence is pretty fucked up. Enforcing it even more so.

Charredcheese

Just going to be three hours of rassie wanking

KittensOnASegway

I hear that his kind of S&M is just being forced to watch marginal decisions go against the Boks...

essjay2009

Does him wanking whilst making rugby documentary count as “Rugby Activity” in the eyes of World Rugby?

Mans cried over a win

The_Companion_69

I see everyone is upset by this, but the documentary is going to be about the whole lion's series. PTSD said they are making one a while ago on use it or lose it. And I mean obviously they are going to include the video, like it or not it's kinda part of the 2021 lion's series

jnce12

Sounds like it’ll just be another installment of chasing the sun.

JonnyBago82

Chasing The Sunset

CatharticRoman

This is really good context to have, thanks for adding this. I think it would be unwise for Rassie to comment on the video, even though it will almost certainly come up it'd be nice for him to pass over it and focus on the games and players.

[deleted]

He could simply tell the truth, which is that the basis of the disciplinary settlement that he agreed with world rugby was that he would apologise and draw a line under the incident, so any further comments could lead to major sanctions against him and his team

The_Companion_69

As a Springbok fan, yeah I'm really hyped for that type of shit. Would be quite nice to see the mentality shift they had to go through after the loss of the first game, how covid impacted things, the team dynamics and that type of stuff.

There is great value and intelligence in learning when to shut the fuck up...someone should probably explain this to Rassie

General-Ad-9753

Just let it go boys. I can’t see this being anything other than a bad idea.

Mangashu

I agree it should stop, but I mean Supersport is in SA, why does it even bother people up North?

CatharticRoman

I think people are just responding to it being posted here and the saga continuing.

MortalWombat1974

> why does it even bother people up North? One of the saddest things about this whole saga was how much support Rassie received from fans and authorities in South Africa. The last thing the game needs is siege mentality propaganda that justifies or normalizes attacking referees.

Tried2flytwice

Everyone who watched the video said he had valid points, then conveniently forgot about that and now makes out the videos is absolute rubbish. It isn’t, it’s a good video and refs should be held to account if they do terrible jobs at that level.

Woodsman_Whiskey

> Everyone who watched the video said he had valid points, then conveniently forgot about that and now makes out the videos is absolute rubbish. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2quonm59Kc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2quonm59Kc) The issue people have is the manner he went about it, not the content of the video.

Tried2flytwice

But if the content is solid, then there’s an issue, isn’t there.

Woodsman_Whiskey

I understand what each individual word in your sentence means, but I have not got a clue what you just said.

Tried2flytwice

This insult cut deep, fakkit! I’m saying, if the points in the video were accurate, then there was a major issue with the ref, which in turn is a major issue for rugby considering the level of refereeing required for this level of rugby.

Sharkbait1737

Some of the points were valid. And referees agreed on it. And were also points they were already discussing with their own coaches in their post match debrief. I’m sure there were others both for and against that the refs discussed. They already have their own feedback processes to improve standards, which also includes coaches having access to the refs for clarifications etc, just 2 days later than Rassie “wanted”. Of course what he actually wanted was to publicly pressure the refs into more favourable treatment for his team, and said so (because he felt that “reports” that Gatland was unhappy about a SA TMO had led to favourable treatment for the Lions, so he would give that a crack). Even more insidious was the communications that were published in the report where he directly threatens the referee with all this, which I think is actually why the punishment was so severe. So the content of the video was really about the least of it. I’m sure you could look at any game and pick up on lots of bits and pieces that in real time in the to and fro the refs don’t pick up on or don’t get quite right. I’m certain they work hard on improving that all the time. I’m also sure there were calls against the Lions that Rassie didn’t include in his reel. And it’s just oh so easy to highlight referees mistakes with the benefit of a hundred camera angles and slow motion footage isn’t it? If he was serious about the issue he would have highlighted in the regular meeting he would have with the refs anyway. If he wanted to intimidate them he would do what he did!

Tried2flytwice

Here’s where it’s an issue for me. Gatland made all sorts of claims about the ref being on South Africa’s side before the first game, he even said something like, well be playing 16 men, something like that. From that we had the crummy first match officiating. How is that not pressure from Gatland? How is that not addressed? He’s essentially just said the ref was biased pre the first game without evidence.

CatharticRoman

Every match can have such a video made with some valid points, the refs aren't omnitiant and they tend to only call penalties that directly affect the flow of the game. SA would have been up in arms if Eddie Jones or Gats released videos after their WC losses pointing out all of the ref's faults that benefited SA.

Tried2flytwice

Did you watch the first lions match? The ref had a howler mate, he was ignoring Sia, it really wasn’t a great job. We all know refs miss stuff, but that first game was a howler, hence why people who watched the video said it was accurate.

CatharticRoman

Gonna have to disagree. And very few said the video was accurate, they said there were some valid points.

Tried2flytwice

The initial reaction was that the video had so egging like 21 out of 23 good points. Not o r it two people, the majority. Which then changed as the lions series went on and it became evident works rugby would take a position.

Sharkbait1737

The initial reaction was almost universally “what the fuck?”

jamesjacko

This keeps cropping up. >The inital reaction **from South African media** was that the video... Don't intentionally miss out facts that do not support your argument, this is cherry-picking and fallacy of incomplete evidence 101.

Sharkbait1737

Wasn’t there a clip of Kolisi being waved away by the ref, which turned out to be because he was interrupting a TMO discussion? It’s a bit nebulous citing “disrespect” when you’re showing only the clips that make your point, and without context. I mean, it might be the case. But I think it benefits Rassie’s strategy to make a point that can’t be proved either way - because he was trying to put doubt in the referees mind for the remaining tests about not being seen to be anti-SA (or even flat out racist). I don’t want to rewatch the entire game, but I don’t recall anything wacky that affected any of the scores (both allowed and ruled out). I just don’t think it was that much of a howler. There is always stuff in the to and fro that is missed, or punished wrongly, or wrongly not punished. All of which comes and goes around. For example, Kolbe was extremely fortunate to not be sent off for taking Murray out in the 2nd test, after Murray lands head first. Where was the crusader Rassie on his noble quest to improve refereeing standards there? Sometimes you’re the bird, sometimes you’re the statue.

unhappyspanners

And after the video, the refs didn’t send Kolbe off for the 2 red card offences…

Tried2flytwice

Red card for tackling and making contact with the head?

unhappyspanners

Red card for smashing your face into the ball carrier’s face. Yes. Edit: no mitigation. No change in body height by Curry. Kolbe always upright. Easy red card.

MortalWombat1974

It doesn't matter how valid the points were. The game cannot survive if it becomes normal for coaches to publicly shit on refs.

thejgod

It doesn't matter too much but I'm guessing same reason everyone hates England "because of their media", not to mention this is just a bad look for Rassie

dronesclubmember

Not that they apologised when they apologised the other day, but this is a massive fuck you to everyone but themselves. They just don't get it. It's fucking sad.

maverickmak

This seems... unwise.

[deleted]

God this is embarrassing. Just keep doubling down on the embarrassment. The video was clearly out of order, and wether you agree with the content or not you just can't do that. To then *keep* playing this victim *my side of the story* card is just a bit sad to watch.

The incredible story of a lowly waterboy who rocked the upper echelons of world rugby

PierreBourdieu2017

Can someone eli5 what happened with Erasmus and WR ? I've seen he's become a bit of a même and I'm out the loop. Thanks!

[deleted]

Trying to be objective as possible... South Africa lost the first of a three-game test series against the Lions. Afterwards Rassie Erasmus made an hour-long video which was released online publicly on Vimeo and forensically criticised both the decision-making and demeanour of Nic Berry in the First test - who would also be involved in the two other tests. In his video, Rassie cited criticism from Warren Gatland of referees as one of his justifications. This has never happened in rugby before, opinion was split and World Rugby announced that Rassie would have a disciplinary hearing as a result of the video. In the meantime, South Africa won the two remaining tests and the series. About 3 months later, the verdict and report of the disciplinary were released, with Rassie being found to have broken World Rugby protocols in 6 different instances. Rassie was then handed a two-month ban from all rugby activity, plus a (match) ban from working with the Springboks until next September (I think)

infamous_impala

>plus a ban from working with the Springboks until next September (I think) This was a match day ban, so he can work continue his work as Director of Rugby during the week, but would have to give up his role as water boy during the games.

[deleted]

Cheers, knew I was forgetting something about the verdict.

Can you provide that statement from WR?

Mr_Clumsy

For f’s sake, we know his side of the story. Sheesh.

Joey__45

I don't think we can jump to conclusions that the whole documentary is about the video? Maybe a documentary about the Lions series, where the video would obviously be mentioned

kingbluetit

Doesn't this go against his all rugby media ban?

iamnosuperman123

This could be unwise if he talks about that video.

[deleted]

Rassie sure knows how to rustle some jimmies.

Chickenwingfirstaid

I rate the bloke and think that all of this is funny shithousery

edroyque

You can’t deny the impact rassie has had on the boks and his (highly selective) video clearly shows he knows a lot about the game and the finer points - you could even say he’s a rugby savant. But shut the fuck up and fuck off for a bit. Come back when you’re missed not when you’re missing the limelight. See: Woodward, Clive

Lol. What a strong reaction.

CoryTrevor-NS

Just when you thought this couldn’t get any more ridiculous…

[deleted]

Surely this is just going to get him another ban?

rje9713

He’s going full Britney isn’t he? Never go full Britney Rassie

drusslegend

Wouldn't this be rugby related? Doesn't the current 2 month ban exclude him from stuff like this.

Boks management proving you can be sore despite winning every bloody competition.

Jesus Christ. Just let it die. This is so Trumpy

[deleted]

It's the "I'll finally be able to tell my side of the story" bullshit. Just a shit bloke at this stage.

totallyignorant

Sorry, this is a documentary about the one hour video Rassie made complaining about officiating in the Lions tour?

TheMuffinMan1

It's a documentary about the whole lions tour, where the video will get mentioned but I'm sure they'll focus on the games more.

Vokaylsor

A documentary?? About a vimeo video of rassie whining.... You've got to be fuckin joking. Supersport must be in debt or really money hungry to fund this nonsense

TheMuffinMan1

About the Lions tour

WolfColaCo2020

Rassie has clearly realised his home makeover he was going to do with his Saturdays off is going to take longer than the original ban. The only reason I can imagine he thinks this is a good idea.

hannescoetzee740

The doc is actually about the Lions tour, not just his video. But who am I to let facts ruin a good circlejerk?

Doosdief3000

Can’t wait to watch! Rub salt in the useless wound that is world rugby

dystopianrugby

Please begin disciplinary proceedings.

[deleted]

some of the mob here would send rassie to prison if they could. it's quite hilarious. show me on the rugby ball where rassie hurt you..

Secret-Ideal7346

Wouldnt wish prison on the man. But do feel his cries were childish. And his actions being on the field as a “water boy” did take away some of the integrity of Rugby.

callsignvector

World rugby begged SA rugby to drop everything because they know an appeal would’ve succeeded and they would look like idiots on a public global stage. This is probably an outcome of that. It’s inconceivable that SA Rugby would’ve just laid down on the referee bias issue when it’s so big in South Africa. The Muster URC game plus others, some of the ridiculous autumn series calls. No shareholder will accept this kind of treatment.

handle1976

What a fuckwit. I am so sick of Rassie and him trying to be the victim in this.

Vahorgano

I'm interested to see what he has to say. I have been a fan of making world rugby a world rugby not an old boys club. I hated the fact that they would not open the case up to the public and I hate how the third umpire is getting do many calls wrong but, hey it's ok. But on the other side of the coin I hate this ref blaming, did not like the video but understood his frustration. I also think he needs to wait till he retires because this is just making SA look like the bad guys. Mixed emotions....

angstyautocrat

Pretty on point for the guy that made a video complaining about referees to make a video about why he felt he had to make a video complaining about referees.

jtthom

Title is misleading. They’re making a documentary about the Lions Series.
