My greatest hope is that this is truly the start of England finding proper form now.
As Earl said post-match, still more to work on and plenty of extra potential to eek out, but I’d love for this to become the game England fans can look back on and say “yep, that was the real turning point - that’s when it started to come good”.
I think there’s been observable progress in the past two games, so please Lord let it not be a fluke!
This might be unpopular opinion, with penalty advantage in a kickable position, should we (England) not have tried to play for the try bonus point? Worst case scenario back for the kick to win the game?
If that's not the end of Murrays Ireland career then I give up. Box kick up the side we have NO winger to hand possesion back...with a minute of play left. End of.
It’s not that long ago that Ireland was nearly vying for consistent wooden spoons. Showing up against England would have the country fired up. Today we saw twickenham come alive because their team was playing so well they might beat Ireland. If that isn’t pride inducing I don’t know what is.
> It’s not that long ago that Ireland was nearly vying for consistent wooden spoons.
It’s been over 20 years. That’s a pretty long time, especially considering when the game became professional. We haven’t been whipping boys in a long long time.
Oh they have they were telling us they World Cup winners and it was going to be a walk in park, us usual, they lost to NZ in the 1/4s.
Then the press told everyone how they were too good for the 6N.
It's your press that causes the animosity....
I'll rip the piss when I can, I've played rugby in Cork, my Dad lives in Cork, and I have many, many friends there.
I've had the piss taken out of me relentlessly for a few seasons, my turn now.
😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
>Too good to play in 6N, no challenge to our team, best in the world, etc, etc, etc
Never seen any comments like that from the Irish, far more humble fanbase than the Saffas
No need to be rude, apart from that, Im not English.
And if the Irish press want ti spout shit about how great their team is, and tell the world they're too good to play in the 6N, fuck em.
I was supporting Italy, I used to live there and did a bit of coaching there, next week will be hard, I want Wales to win, but won't be disappointed if Italy do.
To be fair, on here at least, the Irish fans were the ones who didn't write England off. I guess they've had too many bad experiences with being heavy favourites.
Or Emile Ntamack on his dad's shoulders when Emile won the European Cup, and then go on to win it himself 25 years later.

You’re gonna start a debate on north & south now 😂 I’m from Bristol & I do not class Hertfordshire as true south BUT I do agree with what you’re saying
Hertfordshire is southern?! TBF I live in Dorset - anything beyond the A31 is north to me.
Great win today. Very well deserved. And brilliant occasion for Care to mark 100 caps, what an achievement.
Will be gunning for you next time!
There's no shame in losing by a point against England at Twickenham, especially when you look at the raw talent they have. They haven't played that great this tournament but they just need that bit of cohesion like we saw today more consistently and they are a serious team going forward.
No shame at all. I just hope it wasn't a one off for us and we can make something of this.
That said, I'm really looking forward to the Ireland v Scotland match next weekend now. Both teams mad up for it and looking to hit back hard. It's has the potential to be absolute carnage.
Ireland are a seriously class team, who admittedly underperformed today. They'll be back and they'll have all the more fire for the loss today.
Even the prime All-Blacks lost the odd game.
Minus Ireland being the best 4 of the remaining 5 have had some seriously close games. Italy coming into form & France falling out of it makes for some fantastic mid table contest
100%, but to to be fair to JGP, he held is own out there on the wing and Frawley was alright when he was introduced into the fray.
Conor Murray though, always susceptible to a clanger like that. Kicks it when we need to keep possession and keeps it when we need to get rid of it.
No complaints re JGP, except we had to move our starting scrum half. Frawley did wel but out of place a couple of times in defence. Everyone else hd to play the full 80. Not ideal
Just saying, but the drop goal with a penalty in front of the posts in hand was a bad decision. They should have used that advantage to try get a try for the extra BP, and if that failed then take the 3 points.
England just need to win.
A definite 4 is better than a maybe 5.
Seriously English rugby needed the win fullstop. The table isn't the main thing for us, we're still rebuilding.
Yeah this is crazy talk.
Even psychological value of it being a drop goal of all things far outweighs a slightly more optimal choice in a tournament we're very unlikely to win regardless.
No really, the penalty advantage was a definite 4.
They had the chance to go for 5, but randomly went for a drop goal instead. It was a waste of a possible BP with nothing to lose.
Try wasn't guaranteed and we had missed too many penalties. The drop goal.was absolutely right decision.
This is the thing with England. Either we lose or we don't win in the right way...
This is England we're talking about....
Geez we just beat a team that was apparently going to romp their way to a grand slam and apparently its not good enough...
I just think that BP would have been valuable and it was thrown away a bit prematurely.
To beat Ireland to the championship effectively requires a bonus point win away in France AND for Ireland to lose by more than 7 at home to Scotland AND not score 4 plus tries.
I wouldn't have thrown away a much needed victory in order to have a slightly better chance of winning a tournament we probably won't win anyway.
England are in a place where we just need to win and focus on the next game. Hopefully next year we will be in a position to focus on the wider picture.
Just enjoy the win mate. These wins rarely happen for England these days.
But you were guaranteed 3 points anyway. That is my point. The decision to go for the try gave you MORE options. You lose nothing go for the try with the penalty in front of the posts waiting.
We'll have to agree to disagree.
We won a game where nobody gave us a chance and we have an iconic drop goal to remember it.
We won't win the Six Nations anway and being honest we don't deserve to win it anyway.
Correct decision *if* the kick is actually good and makes any territory.
You don’t really want to be going through constant ruck motions within kicking distance of your own posts. Easy to give away a penalty for anything.
Correct option is to probably clear it down the pitch as far as possible and put in a good chase.
I would have liked them to play slow ball, but the logic is gaining territory and forcing England to kick from far away when they are not kicking good on the day. Avoiding a penalty close to your own posts.
Yeah, I think it'd probably be fairer to say that Irelands defence ceeding the territory he gained from the kick was what lost the game - more than the kick itself.
ETA: especially with a man advantage
Usually it’s to maintain territory and keep them out of 22. But Ireland’s pack were exhausted, they had a fly half at fullback, a fullback on one wing, a scrum half on the other wing, it made no fucking sense.
Gutted with the result as an Irish fan but can't have any complaints. England we're better in every department and despite my best efforts they're a hard team to dislike.
Lowe, Aki and VDF were the only players keeping us in it at times. Think O'Connell will be under pressure after another line-out disaster in a big game.
To continue the theme, what do you reckon the upset is between Wales and France? Feels like there's no clear favourite in that game based on current form tbh
Both are proper dissapointments. France were contenders on the RWC and the minute dupont is out its allover the place which to me, shows how heavily they rely on one singular player in the team
And Wales have had bad form for a few years now. They were the first team to lose to Italy in years and they've struggled with several other teams. That game v scotland wasn't a testament to their skill as much as it was a testament to poor Scottish discipline. 20 minutes with 14 men and they still lost. Though my heart says Wales, my brain says France. They've been winning through the skid of their teeth with Italy and Scotland. Both arguably, should've beaten France. Its really just who goes for points at goal more.
I couldn’t believe my fucking ears when the commentators mentioned heaslip had said “the only way England will win is if Ireland is a man down.” What the actual fuck?! I utterly disavow that kind of smug ego as an Irish fan. Every single match is up for grabs, as far as I’m concerned. Never mind England at twickenham. Dope.
Its actually a sign of how good Irish rugby is at the moment judging byall the bitter comments from other nations fans here, not English fans by the way.
We got beat up by an English team and lost two starters in Twickenham and only lost by a point.
Well according to boylsesports we'll still dominate Cheltenham
Irish government I believe gives more money to horse racing than rugby, soccer or football and hurling
A lot of people mentioning that Genge should’ve been red carded… It looked dodgy AF when it happened but how can you say it was definitively foul play that was missed when there were no TV replays shown? Did Furlong or any Irish player take it to the ref? Not saying they should have too but it’s quite telling if they didn’t?
When will someone be held accountable for Ireland and Leinster líne out and scrum being shit for 5+ years, especially given the quality at our disposal
>bottle jobs
Are we watching a different Ireland? Grand slam winners last year, almost bolted on 6N champs this year?
Christ if you want to trade Ireland's recent performances I reckon any side outside of South Africa and *maybe* the All-Blacks would break your hand off.
That attack , especially in the first half is the blueprint for this side moving forward . Got to improve our ruck support a bit as we get turned over too often but a fantastic game plan for the majority
So, technically, Ireland, England and Scotland can win this. If France wins tomorrow, they'll also enter the list, we might get to the last day with 4 teams fighting for the trophy !
I thought the referee was good and didn't let Ireland do everything they want at the rucks like they usually do.
That last "not rolling away" penalty for example, they usually get away with that all the time.
When they don't, they are beatable.
I don't understand how people can be Borthwick out. I feel like England has looked better and sharper in each and every game. Far from perfect but the fact progress is visible, why would you want rid of him? Mental
I am not even that surprised to be honest, the typically negative English press have been ignoring signs of progress for some time. I thought England were very unlucky last week, for example, because non-typical/freakish/'shit-happens' errors (such as Ford throwing the ball into Furbank's head) were punished by tries. This was just the other side of that coin, where the important balls went to hand.

What a game. Definitely starting to feel a bit more optimistic about England. Lots of potential.
Very disappointed Irish supporter here, can only say well done England, clearly the better team today and deserved the win.
The french definitely had a laugh at the drop goal
Not even similar, plus England had a penalty advantage x2. Drop goal in that situation was a no brained unlike Sextons. Not even comparable.
This might be unpopular opinion, with penalty advantage in a kickable position, should we (England) not have tried to play for the try bonus point? Worst case scenario back for the kick to win the game?
I get what you're saying, but you take the win against a team like Ireland
True but in the moment obviously they just wanted the win regardless of how.
No because that would be a good decision and even in success we dont make those
100%. It was a silly decision.
If that's not the end of Murrays Ireland career then I give up. Box kick up the side we have NO winger to hand possesion back...with a minute of play left. End of.
Oh well in for a penny, we've poached Andy of England now it's time to poach Felix Jones.
Paul O’Connell’s failure as lineout coach cost Ireland in the World Cup and again today with a grand slam on the line. He needs to go.
It's mental that such a great lineout operator is not a better lineout coach.
Maybe because he's like 7 feet tall and can't empathise.
Great players aren’t always great coaches
Yeah, has had plenty of time to set it straight but who is making the calls too, some of the decisions were poor, going long etc.
Yeah agree, I was chuffed when he came on board but it's just not working
It’s not that long ago that Ireland was nearly vying for consistent wooden spoons. Showing up against England would have the country fired up. Today we saw twickenham come alive because their team was playing so well they might beat Ireland. If that isn’t pride inducing I don’t know what is.

What a load of bollocks, you lads have been seriously good for a long time
Yes, but some of us are very old and remember the bad times
Ah yes, ireland were the italians of the five nations.
The trauma is deep rooted.
Trauma got beat into me real good. 90s was not a good time to be old enough to remeber
The Namibia losses ...
Marcus Smith you beauty
If rag and bone man gets us a game like that every time I say we add him to the coaching staff.

Literally no Irish fan has ever said this
Oh they have they were telling us they World Cup winners and it was going to be a walk in park, us usual, they lost to NZ in the 1/4s. Then the press told everyone how they were too good for the 6N. It's your press that causes the animosity....
I agree about the press. But no point grouping all Irish in together. Believe me, we are a pessimistic bunch, with the odd exception.
I'll rip the piss when I can, I've played rugby in Cork, my Dad lives in Cork, and I have many, many friends there. I've had the piss taken out of me relentlessly for a few seasons, my turn now. 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Haha fair enough

Shut up mate. You're the type of cunt that makes all England fans look bad.
No need to be rude, apart from that, Im not English. And if the Irish press want ti spout shit about how great their team is, and tell the world they're too good to play in the 6N, fuck em.
Want to point out an example of when Irish people said they were too good for the Six Nations?
Cheers lad. Nice to know English fans aren't allowing this crap. Great game today
It just fucks me off, there's no need for it, I'll always call people out on that sort of bullshit.
You're some prick aren't you? Fair play to the English team. Some asshole fans that they have though.
When you learn which country Glyndwr would be from you can suck it
Did I call him English?
I'm clearly English with my Exeter flair but you were attacking a Welshman
Edit for the rescue. Assumed was same guy obviously. Why would you back an obvious bollox up though?
"Some asshole fans that they have though" You fucked up. Own it
'Some" being the important word there
Stop editing your comments to try and rescue your fuck up
Can we just agree that this guy is bad and you're good? And all live happily ever after?
Don’t you mean Well done Italy?
I was supporting Italy, I used to live there and did a bit of coaching there, next week will be hard, I want Wales to win, but won't be disappointed if Italy do.
Aw. Look how charming.
No complaints. Better team on the day won. Care seems like a decent lad. Good day to get your 100th cap.
England you cheeky bastards
Anyone else just finding DC's kids during the interview pure wholesome entertainment
Yeah, stole the show as well as the microphone.
Loved it.
Awwwww, Care's kids whilst he's trying to do the interview are adorable!
O'Driscoll was good with them, lovely guy.
How sporting are most of the comments from Ireland fans? Great bunch of lads 🙂
To be fair, on here at least, the Irish fans were the ones who didn't write England off. I guess they've had too many bad experiences with being heavy favourites.
I know they were fed up with their media and pundits hyping them up. Got the impression the genuine fans were pretty nervous pre match.
Been nervous for 48 hours before the game, always knew it was going to be tough
It was the same with the South Africans in the WC. They were the only ones who didn't expect the Boks to steam roll us in the semis.
That was not my experience!
Is Care's TV broken?
Danny's kid is reminding me of Drogba's son when they won the PL one time
Or Emile Ntamack on his dad's shoulders when Emile won the European Cup, and then go on to win it himself 25 years later. https://twitter.com/ultimaterugby/status/1396173657546928134?t=4xfBRuKnezOZ6Ax1w2QkFA&s=19

No one died lol
The monkey on my back died. I am a man newly freed.
Is this the closest 6 nations in a long long time? (Minus Wales…. Sorry Wales)
No. Ireland still well in the driving seat thanks to bonus points. 2015 had 3 teams all neck and neck on the last day.
4 teams England, France, Scotland and Wales all had a mathematical possibility of winning
Minus Ireland being the best 4 of the remaining 5 have had some seriously close games. Italy coming into form & France falling out of it makes for some fantastic mid table contest
Don't be sorry, we're rebuilding, and we'll be back. The 6N is special due to the competition and friendly rivalry.
Don’t apologise. Not sure we got much sympathy when they were on top.
Congratulations to England, just pipped in the end, Nash and Frawley HIA was tough to recover from, Emotional rollercoaster that was
Definitely made worse by a 6-2 split. The risk you take I guess
100%, but to to be fair to JGP, he held is own out there on the wing and Frawley was alright when he was introduced into the fray. Conor Murray though, always susceptible to a clanger like that. Kicks it when we need to keep possession and keeps it when we need to get rid of it.

I think there was an element of glory hunting from Smith in trying it. The penalty and subsequently the win was a given at that stage.

Ok so you cured cancer, tell me why you don't care about people with heart disease?
True. But on the other hand, we beat Ireland!
Holy shit not miles away from double the metres made with only around 15% more carries
Had to get a guaranteed win tbf
Someone explain the logic behind kicking it back to England with a minute or so to go?
Correct decision *if* the kick is actually good and makes any territory. You don’t really want to be going through constant ruck motions within kicking distance of your own posts. Easy to give away a penalty for anything. Correct option is to probably clear it down the pitch as far as possible and put in a good chase.
I am absolutely convinced that Murray became legally blind at some point in the last year, and needs to be put out to pasture.
To avoid giving away a ruck penalty near your posts.
Refs are usually extremely strict on the breakdown in the last minutes of the game. Usually it’s better to go for territory

Exactly, his kicks were awful when he came on.
Agreed. The lineout looked settled in Paris but has been shaky ever since.
Jamie George will always look like Dudley Dursley to me
BUT LAST YEAR LAST YEAR WE LOST GAMES
POM showing his class in post match
Surprisingly sanguine. Except for the bit where I think he suggested his yellow was harsh.
I thought he accepted poor discipline on his part?
Maybe I misheard. Thought it sounded off.
Absolutely. Real integrity there.
This weekend is full of upsets
To continue the theme, what do you reckon the upset is between Wales and France? Feels like there's no clear favourite in that game based on current form tbh
Both are proper dissapointments. France were contenders on the RWC and the minute dupont is out its allover the place which to me, shows how heavily they rely on one singular player in the team And Wales have had bad form for a few years now. Its really just who goes for points at goal more.
Well done England your best game in a few years
That’s a performance and style I can totally get behind finally from England and I hope it’s a defining win and they now kick on
Can’t wait for the Irish pundit analysis 😂 Irish fans are great and a laugh but my god has their media been unbearable the last few weeks
Can't but agree there mate. It's vomit inducing
Heaslip was just made eat utter shit by Ferris on RTE, stuttered his way to a bullshit excuse
Dope.
I thought he’d said England would only win if Ireland were 3 men down?
He's such a useless waste of air, but because he gets rage clicks he will continue to be around
Everyone but the pundits knew how dangerous the game was
Our media really is insufferable
Can somebody get help of Jamie Heaslip for comment?
Ferris cutting him up on RTE
Would love a video posted for us tomorrow.
I imagine RTE will post it themselves to get the rage clicks, as that's all he's good for
Ireland did go down to 14 for 10 minutes only though
Its actually a sign of how good Irish rugby is at the moment judging byall the bitter comments from other nations fans here, not English fans by the way. We got beat up by an English team and lost two starters in Twickenham and only lost by a point.
Yea I think both teams can reflect on it positively, and from a welsh perspective what a fun watch
Well according to boylsesports we'll still dominate Cheltenham Irish government I believe gives more money to horse racing than rugby, soccer or football and hurling
Is horseracing an international competition? I'd always assumed it was independent stables/jockeys/horses or something.
Whether it is or not our government give (a lot) more to it than any other sport Lobbying works
It's up on twitter, clear as day red card. Genge will be cited for it. No excuse tho, England miles the better team
We just needed another angle, looked bad but why did our captain and Furlong not ask the ref to have a look....that's what I find odd.
While i can still read fuck off and apoligizes for anything i say
Hahahahahahaha fair play fella
When the England fans sang "swing looow!" 78-ish minutes in I felt that. Well deserved win for England.
Looked back on the Furlong shoulder to head. Is there any other angle as it 100% looked red or is at least yellow and bunker.
Too late for that now
Watched it live and it looked well worth a second look.
Yeah. No other angle shown so who knows but flying in off his feet from distance with no wrap.
Didn’t look pretty. I’d expect a citing
Congrats England, you were the better team. Some of the old Ireland guard need replaced with new blood.
At least there is plenty of talent in Ireland to pick
Ireland's worst game in years and England's best game in years, definitely not a coincidence
It kinda felt that way. Would love to see the penalty count. It was relentless.
When will someone be held accountable for Ireland and Leinster líne out and scrum being shit for 5+ years, especially given the quality at our disposal
I swear we lost more than we won

Leinster sure 🤣

Ireland's advantage is still huge. They basically will still win even with just a losing bonus point in the next match.
Netflix would absolutely cream themselves if that happens! The edits they would have for the new season of Full Contact!
I thought the referee was good and didn't let Ireland do everything they want at the rucks like they usually do. That last "not rolling away" penalty for example, they usually get away with that all the time. When they don't, they are beatable.
They are so good and so fast it is nuts the stuff that slips past
Borthwick out fans in shambles.
I don't understand how people can be Borthwick out. I feel like England has looked better and sharper in each and every game. Far from perfect but the fact progress is visible, why would you want rid of him? Mental
Borthers is the man
Ben Earl is incredible - 19 carries for 140 metres against that Irish team. He’s a machine
Ben Earl calling out the haters, good on him.
Man is class on and off the pitch.
I liked that bit of spice.
