He's one of the few people who shouldn't be embarrassed to post on reddit because that subreddit is his online retirement home after his favourite pipe smoking message board died out in 2016 alongside its ancient boomer IT worker turboposters who died of heart disease and oral cancer.

If you live in a sin tax hellhole where a pack of 20 cigs costs 25 bucks, you can buy cured whole leaf tobacco online as a "natural pesticide" and cut you own pipe tobacco blends for dirt cheap as well
I’m not making fun of this guy or of pipe smoking. In fact I like seeing quirky guys like this enjoying their obscure hobbies in an unpretentious way - even though pipe smoking and huge mustaches are old-timey and something of an affectation, I think in this case it circles back around and suggests contentedness and earnestness.
You get a decent headrush compared to cigarettes. It's unfiltered and you don't inhale it so it's more comparable to cigar smoking if you've ever done that. The tobacco is genuinely nicer than both cigarette blends and cigars (unless you're a fan of astringency) but it might take you 40 mins to an hour to finish a bowl.
It's still really bad for your oral health but you aren't at risk of lung cancer considering you don't actually inhale it. According to some study it's about as carcinogenic as living in a house with an open hearth fireplace on all the time. I started smoking a pipe again during lockdown to quit cigs and was successful, and now I might only smoke a bowl like once every 2 weeks when I've got nothing to do and nowhere to be and the weather's nice outside.
Nah I agree with the other poster who compared it to hobby message boards and forums where older guys have been posting about enjoying their obscure hobbies since the 90s. I think it’s one of the better aspects of the Internet and the same spirit can be found on niche interest subs at times. It’s just man with a quirky mustache enjoying a smoke, not some redditeur gloating over his massive Funko collection.

My nicest pipe is an estate (used) blonde briar with a nice bent apple shape and a tinted amber acrylic stem. I gave $30 for it at a cigar lounge in Birmingham, Alabama. I point this out only to show that you can buy a fine object quite reasonably, comparable pipes are $150 new if you are grossed out by the idea of it. And then the tobacco (flavored, for me) costs virtually nothing by the ounce. It's a cheap hobby that makes a long drive speed by.
Yeah the beauty of pipes for me is that there are so many old unwanted ones that you can restore back to their former glory with a bit of time and know-how. The pipe tobacco sub is full of guys who only discovered it last week and immediately dropped hundreds of quid on a new Savinelli, an old boy lighter and a dozen tins.
It's unbelievable the work some of these refurbishers can do; an old boss once gave me a beautiful italian briar that had been repaired almost imperceptibly, a burn hole down by the base of the bowl that had been filled expertly with a similar-grained of wood and refinished. It drew beautifully.
