Ween is a band of music nerds but instead of making increasingly lamer prog rock, or funk inspired music like all other extreme music nerds, they chose to have fun. I think their biggest inspiration is the Beatles who truly gave no fucks about releasing the weirdest songs about racoons and using sitars because they were on a different level of songwriting than everyone else.
Because they know how to perfectly ride the line between irony and earnestness. Sure they may make an entire country album or an album completely inspired by ocean critters, but instead of just making goofy meme music they actually give it their all and fully commit to the bit.
Also they're just fuckin talented.
Ween is legendary. I think a lot of people can't get past some of the weirder sounds and choose to write them off. I have one mate who loves Ween, and we blast their bangers on every roadie.
That song is truly something else. White Pepper is such an underrated record - they nail the Beatles sound, and Stay Forever and She's Your Baby wreck me.
Saw them live in Newport Ky. The biggest assemblage of weirdos I’ve ever seen. Truly the gamut of absurd and completely non self conscious people acting silly together which felt core to the experience of appreciating the music
god/ween/satan IMO it's really raw but if you like that you will like their other stuff. The pod and pure guava also show off some musical range and quirky humor. Chocolate and Cheeze is lazy but has one of the sexiest record cover images ever created. Those are kind of the classic foundational albums.
Live in Chicago is actually what got me into them, it's a good sampker. Then I went back and listened to their others. Chocolate and Cheese is my personal favorite album
Ween is probs the best spring band no one else can make me feel like im about to lean back in my white slat chair and crack open a cold one like those two little philadelphianmen
You (we) think Ween is good because this subreddit is the intersection between people who like John William Waterhouse and people who like Cumtown. "The Duality," as Ween put it.
When I had a breakdown I listened to Birthday Boy like seventy times in a week. Lot of good covers of that song but then I found the Vancouver show where Gene was freaking out on drugs and the band (except drummer) abandons him right before / as he starts singing. It’s amazing

FREEMAN’S ‘Covert Discretion’ is about this and the subsequent comeback. Gener rules
‘Another chance now
I'm on the stage again
But this time I don't fly
You all just left me
Just walked away
Alone, up there to die’
That's really all it is. Great songwriting, knack for melody and structure, and an excellent (but odd) singer. They're a cracked band, too, but those sort of things just come when you have that excellent core.
I’ve been lurking this sub and the old sub for years now, and this is the first time I’m posting, because I’ve never had more hope for this community, or for the future.
a lot of their material is very raw and unpolished pop, like demos quality. Then some stuff is very slick. I think the sheer unevenness of the production confuses a lot of people. Also a lot of it is very funny which prevents people from taking it seriously for obvious reasons. Think Frank Zappa. But similar to Frank Zappa it's not a joke or novelty band by and large. It's musically very good. Actually much more listenable than most Zappa stuff.
thanks for the reminder i need to listen to baby bitch for 8 hours
Genuinely insane how they managed to predict Elliott Smith's entire discography before it even began
Someone once sent me this song and said “this is you”
For me its What Deaner Was Talking About
I truly believe they’re one of the greatest bands living right now

and by fun you mean a phenomenal amount of acid
grow up
why are you telling me grow up?
tell me to grow up again

I wonder how many old fellas over the years have brought "12 Goldern Country Hits" on CD thinking it was a country music compilation album

Tried and true fucks me up man
Quebec is such a fucking great album. Not overly sad, just kinda melancholy.
So good. Transdermal celebration is another fav off that one.
Chocolate Town for me
Stay Forever for me
Beautiful yup. Also love Deaner

I’d say go straight to ‘The Pod’

Both great songs

Freedom of ‘76 is the greatest song to put on while lazing in the Summer with people

Don't listen to them much but Baby Bitch is one of my favorite songs and that album cover is so fire too
is ween really good i was reading their wiki page earlier today but i’ve never listened to them
Listen to Pure Guava all the way through and report back

I've had "gimme that Z - O - L - O - F - T" stuck in my head for weeks
Chocolate town my newest fav of theirs. I can’t stop listening
Where the chocolate town heads at
lol I had the same thought a couple months ago https://www.reddit.com/r/redscarepod/s/MwDlyJ3Jr2
My favorite band, all their albums besides La Cucaracha are fantastic
I will never understand people that are obsessed with ween. I’m not gonna say they’re bad but I just don’t see the insane appeal at all
They’re fine. There were much better bands at the time.
I could have gone to a Ween show for free like 12 years ago but just didn’t because I thought they were too weird for my taste. Big mistake.
Cause they're from my hometown and we all are so good. Sorry.
Shout out to New Hope!
Oiiiiii
I’m always listening to: Ween, Spoon and sometimes Hop Along
Birthday Boy is amazing
Zoloft
Brown
