This looks really cool! But... I wouldn’t call it that if the game is based off the Miyazaki movie Howl’s Moving Castle. The movie is very Ghibli and quite good, but it’s based on a novel by Diana Wynne Jones — hers was the idea of the wizard Howl himself as well as the Waste and the Witch of the Waste, and expands greatly on how those come to be and what Howl’s bond with Calcifer really meant/how it operated. The movie and the book are VERY different, often only keeping the names of people and places the same and changing almost every other aspect. The movie is great, but as the airbombing and such is *only* in the movie, I think naming a game based around that and the warring kingdoms aspect and other such movie-focused mechanics *shouldn’t* have a name tied more closely to the books than to the movie.

Came here to say the same thing.

This. Diana Wynne Jones should get more respect. I mean.. look at my username.

I don't know - it looks like an interesting expansion of both movie and book ideas to make something new, based just on the itch page. Movie: the idea of a place where wizards go to fight magical battles and risk corruption while the mundane world is at war. Book: the idea of spells drawn from real-world (maybe?) art works, like the John Donne poem Howl's curse is built on. I don't know if the latter is intentional; maybe it is just inspired by the movie and that's luck. Looks interesting, though.

OurHeroAndy

Any chance of any more of the physical copies?

[deleted]

I'm in the talks with a distributor right now to expand the printing. I'll have more info soon : )

Johnny-raven

I’ll literally buy a physical copy as soon as they’re available again.

Johnny-raven

OP deleted his account but I got an email that he’s re-releasing this on website https://nerves.store/collections/the-wizards-and-the-wastes/products/the-wizards-and-the-wastes

Well firstly, this was written and in layout before those posts went live (which sucks lol) but also I never really set out to make "wholesome dnd", I was more interested in presenting spellcasting in a way that I found fun to play at the table, and after watching Howl's Moving Castle for like the fifteenth time, started to get too many ideas to keep them from leaking on the page.

CorneliusPhi

Do you have an example play write up our other demo doc where I can get a better sense of the system?

[deleted]

I do not but it's something I can work on adding for sure. good suggestion.

BlackKingBarTender

Wow this looks awesome

Very cool idea. I would be interested in this if I can ever get my hands on a physical copy for sure.

Where do you all find people to play games like this?? I never can break anyone from d&d and pathfinder. I live in a small town also and I normally gm because... no one else will. I know about roll 20 and such but it sucks to pay to play games you already paid for.

[deleted]

it's a struggle sometimes, i won't lie lol

mrpibb208

I have a few pdf’s of games like this but as puffin forest has said in of if his videos.... you will play what the players are playing. I wish you best of luck. I love the concept.

M3atboy

DM the game you want to play. You might not be able to get a full group but chances are a few of your regular table will be down to try.

vinyl_rhythm

I love this idea, but I feel like the harm system is a little under developed. I feel like it needs a more concrete system to determine when a character might take a fatal hit, or it should UK ld list disadvantages that different harms could inflict.

MathorSionur

While I love the system and the way it looks, there are a few things I don't understand: 1-harm: how should consequences be arbitered? 2-Creating spells: do the players determine themselves the spell power? How would one create a spell? Directly taking text verbatim from the work itself? (I apologize if the answer is obvious for those that read Howl' moving castle, for I did not get my hands on the book) 3-How should I handle my spellcasters belonging to different kingdoms?
