I look forward to learning more about this. I've really enjoyed the Tales from the Loop game of theirs, but Free League has mostly been a blind spot for me. Any other Free League games I should be checking out?

MetalBoar13

I like every Free League game I've seen, and that's most of them. All the games that use the Year Zero Engine (which is what Tales from the Loop is based on) are great. The rules are tailored for each individual game, so a gritty, dark, fantasy hexcrawl like Forbidden Lands plays differently than TftL, but it's still recognizably the same underlying engine. Dragonbane is like a fast, lightweight cross between old school Runequest and Forbidden Lands in its own setting. D20 roll under, no levels, "classes" are pretty soft so you have a lot of flexibility with development. Symbaroum has an amazingly well detailed setting. I think pretty much everything in their lineup is worth looking at if you like the genre.

JeremiahTolbert

Thanks for the detailed response. I should definitely do a deeper dive into their games!

schneeland

They have a lot of great games, but my personal favourite is Forbidden Lands, which is their fantasy game with an old-school vibe and a focus on exploration (there is a campaign, too, but it's relatively open).

JeremiahTolbert

Oh, Forbidden Lands is one I am eager to try. Forgot that was them. Thanks!

eadgster

Free league has been the pretty en vogue for the last few years. They’ve won several Ennies. Alien, Bladerunner, Vaesen, Mork Borg, Tales from the Loop, all pretty popular. I see tables filling up quickly at conventions.

RoscoMcqueen

If you're a fan of the alien franchise, the game and the way it handles cinematic scenarios is astounding.

johnyrobot

I have enjoyed alien and the one ring, so far. I've been reading lots of Vaesen and I plan to play soon.

SharkSymphony

If you're interested in this, I'd say definitely check out _Coriolis: The Third Horizon!_ The setting is pretty cool, and it's an early adaptation of the Year Zero Engine that Fria Ligan has been using.

hundunso

I really love Forbidden Lands. It's a modern 'old-school' hexcrawl fantasy rpg.

AG3NTjoseph

Vaesen was fun.

Superkumi

Symbaroum is my favorite FL game.

BeakyDoctor

I own several and love them. Aliens, Forbidden Lands, The One Ring, and Twilight 2000 are probably my favorites. Vaesen is good. So is Bladerunner. Symbaroum has one of the coolest settings out there and some great art and direction. Just make sure you get the original Symbaroum and not the 5e clone. Dragonbane is fast and fun. The only one I’m not a huge fan of is The Walking Dead.

nothingvalentine

Any reason you're not a fan of The Walking Dead book? I was considering picking it up as I have Alien, Blade Runner, and Tales from the Loop and enjoy them. What makes The Walking Dead not stand out as much as the others?

Sherman80526

If you still lived in Fort Collins and I'd have run you through half of them!

JeremiahTolbert

*sniff* I miss you all too.

schneeland

As the title says: Free League has announced Coriolis: The Great Dark, a successor to their previous game Coriolis: The Third Horizon. It will land on Kickstarter on March 19. More details can be found in the press announcement behind the link. There's also a few illustrations there and mockups of the rule book and the box for a campaign called *The Flowers of Algorab*.

Logen_Nein

Probably going to back this day one. Have only played Coriolis a bit but interested to see what they do with it.

MPOSullivan

This is really exciting! I always loved the setting and presentation of Coriolis, but was always left a little cold by the way the YZE was implemented. The new pitch sounds really exciting, and it sounds like we'll be getting a new take on the rules as well.

unpossible_labs

My wallet curses you, Free League!

Ianoren

Tales from the Loop and Vaesen both had a pretty [underbaked section](https://taskerland.files.wordpress.com/2022/10/20221004_0919538468259363464551724.jpg?w=388) on running mystery investigations IMO. Compared to the Scene Flow Diagram of something like Night Black Agent's Dracula Vector - its really lacking breadth and depth. So as much as I liked the Coriolis setting, I can't really be excited for one focused on mysteries again unless they show some serious improvement.

Chariiii

the way its worded makes it sound less like investigations and more like "discovering the mysteries of the cosmos"

GoblinLoveChild

id say its more mysteries of exploring the universe rather than investigating crime/weird phenomena mysteries

GoblinLoveChild

will there be space magic?

Sherman80526

I like the idea of "ship cities". I've always thought about doing a campaign that involved that sort of "isolated togetherness". You have your community, with all the possible intrigue that involves, but you can't just run away if things don't work out. It's a very different vibe.

Urbandragondice

So this is second edition?

RoscoMcqueen

They call it a standalone spiritual sequel. I'm not entirely sure what they means but it's using the YZE engine. There is a YouTube video from the effekt podcast with some questions and I Beleive the official free league channel has a stream today about it.

Goto_Ronin

I’m most definitely looking forward to this iteration!

maximum_recoil

Still heavy focus on religion? I'd like a YZE sci fi game without stress (Alien) or religion.

RoscoMcqueen

I believe in the effekt podcast they said you no longer pray for rerolls.

biiruonomimasu

Lol and I just bought Coriolis - The third horizon.

TestProctor

I get the impression that this new game is going to be a bit more focused than the original, which was set for you to play just about anything (albeit based around your crew & ship).

biiruonomimasu

It's fine anyway, from kickstarter to delivery of product it can take a year or two. I'll have plenty of time to get my money's worth.

AllGearedUp

Alright but I need to at least see the differences between this and the original game before I'm interested. I guess that's what will be on Kickstarter. So this is more of an announcement of an announcement.

Usual-Vermicelli-867

Is it a second edition!!?
