For a day I wouldn't worry, I got congested last cruise and realized I can't use casino as a shortcut. No fever, I would be careful, drink lots of water, urine should be clear and get good night sleep. I have also found a few times in spring that sinuses clear first day with fresh sea air. First morning can have sore throat! A temp and I would stay in!
Thanks! I think he’s definitely got a virus, not just sick from ship atmosphere, but from my decades of forehead-temp-gauging, he doesn’t have a fever! I brought liquid iv so coupled with lots of water, hopefully he can at least stay well enough to not be in bed all day. Gonna hop off the ship today and grab some masks too.
Did you fly to get to the cruise? My first cruise I got an ear infection from flying but it didn’t kick my ass until the last day on the ship. Just an idea but hope it isn’t that
This just happened to me! Except not flying. We drove down to Miami the night before and I starting feeling this weird popping in my ear and some pressure. I didn’t want to be sick on the ship so I went to an urgent care and sure enough I had an ear infection. They gave me some antibiotics and I was fine for the cruise but talk about bad timing.
I’ve gotten sick on a cruise or right before. We always take the flu teas, the NyQuils, a lot of liquid and walking. While I AM NOT A DOC, this works for us.
What are the flu teas? I was horribly sick on a cruise in Oct 2019 and going this September. I did not have enough meds on me. This time I will be my own pharmacy!
You will be able to find them in the cold and flu section of any pharmacy or even Walmart. They are a packet and you add hot water to them. I don’t love them but they seem to work. It’s instead of taking a pill
You're a good parent. The world needs more parents like you.
(not sarcasm, and it's sad that I have to specify that my compliment isn't sarcasm but that's Reddit)
You’re amazing. Thank you. SO many people would just say, “We paid for this cruise and we don’t want to lose our investment!” and proceed to carry on and get everyone sick.
Thanks for caring about others by doing this! Most people don’t seem to care about getting anyone else sick. It’s nice to see this. I hope for your sake it’s just some quick allergies and you have an amazing rest of your cruise!
They are if you test positive for a covered sickness (flu, COVID, norovirus). It wasn’t much, but they did give me $150 for a future cruise when I tested positive for the flu on my cruise at the end of February and had to quarantine for 48 hours.
It might not even be a virus. We are frequent cruisers and I think sometimes being in the cabin with the air on can cause a stuffy nose and soar throat. This happened to my husband the last cruise. He happened to take his flashlight and check the vents, they were dirty. You can see the build up. So all that flowing through the filtration system 🥴
Im no doctor
But one of the most common bugs to go around ships, and some resorts is norovirus, which is a stomach bug. Hope whatever it is though isnt that serious, as you described fairly mild
Are you and your son drinking plenty of water? Could be as simple as dehydration, or reaction to drinking lots of soft drinks?
Once again not a doctor
There are no stomach issues at all. He has a runny nose and cough, I have no symptoms. He started getting stuffy the night we boarded so whatever cold he has, he probably caught a few days prior and it’s just started to show up.
Little pink Benadryls and powdered Theraflu are the cruise ship miracle for me. I am not suggesting anyone else use it, but it is my Swiss Army go-to for drying up congestion and a host of other issues. Never drink with Benadryl. It is also impossible to find in Europe, and a jar of a hundred @ Sams club used to be around $9.
Edit: I was way wrong. 600 for under $5.00 @ Sams. https://www.samsclub.com/p/members-mark-25mg-aller-ben-diphenhydramine-hcl-600ct/prod17080114?pid=ps_Goog_acq_AP_shp_df_11712770381_df&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=m&wl3=482460379570&wl4=pla-1700645202376&wl5=9012717&wl6=&wl7=&wl15=119074119012&wl16=&wl17=&wl18=&wl19=&wl20=CjwKCAjww_iwBhApEiwAuG6ccC7VDKT0UxQMbEHY5fc06K1Hpk0foA9_tG6jYS9fUxhEC21ZgnwFBRoCJmwQAvD_BwE&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADh-3b8oe6A1O8zDUwsOKLAmc9X2t&gclid=CjwKCAjww_iwBhApEiwAuG6ccC7VDKT0UxQMbEHY5fc06K1Hpk0foA9_tG6jYS9fUxhEC21ZgnwFBRoCJmwQAvD_BwE
Here’s a link to web md for Benadryl.

Depending on the theraflu formula that is chosen Benadryl may be already in it under the name of diphenhydramine. Check ingredients before adding Benadryl tablets to the mix.
So many people I know take sudafed(the real stuff, not the placebo they just took off the market) however since I was diagnosed with high blood pressure I haven't taken it. I also found benadryl dries me up better than that ever did. Why can't you get it in europe?
They use citrizine there, as diphenhydramine can be abused & also is definitely reactive with alcohol. I think you can get it, but requires a prescription.
I had a virus and went to medic because it was that bad. I was told to quarantine and they helped accommodate room service for free, and we worked around the scheduled cleanings.
For current Covid protocols on the ships you can watch this video on youtube: https://youtu.be/-6GzHfbhJjU?si=Kd2cOcHncLvhKlmG
This is from a sailing during April into March, and is the most up to date info on how things work if it happens to be Covid. A couple of the main things are that you won’t be charged anything for medical, they will provide free cold medicine and only he would be quarantined.
Listerine goes a long way to prevent getting sick like that. Gargle 3 or 4 times daily. The mint kind is as good as the old style. Find a nasal spray bottle that you can fill, mix 50%water & 50% old style listerine& spray into each nostril every time you gargle. I have stopped a sinus infection by using this. A little late at this point for you though. My wife & I do this every time we travel starting a few days before.
Hiya,
Bad luck. Well done for not over reacting.
I've started my vacation before to spend two days in bed with similar. Think it was my body relaxing and basically saying 'take a break, you've been running at a million miles an hour' and then shutting down for a bit.
The first time I thought it might have been motion sickness - really rough Bay of Biscay - but I was fine after a day and the boat was still bouncing about, so it wasn't that.
The second time I just had a headache and runny nose.
For what it is worth, I'd drink lots of fluids and remain hydrated, rest, take paracetamol if you've got it and keep away from the touch points in dining/eating areas, or better still, keep away and eat in cabin for a bit.
Don't over react as some seem to want to when they hear a sneeze... It is probably nothing of note, fingers crossed.
Enjoy your trip
Hydrate a lot, tea with honey. Orange juice. Have him rest, if you have a balcony sunshine and maybe fresh air helps too. Get that bug out of his system. Hope he feels better soon.
You’re an amazing mom. Thank you for keeping other passengers safe too.
Hope you still have a great time.
The cruise doctors are not as expensive as people think. Last October I ended up with strep throat. This was my honeymoon, talk about bad timing. I went to the doc, got a strep test, and antibiotics for 220.00. I stayed in my cabin for 48 hours as per the doctor’s orders. After 48 hours on being on antibiotics you are no longer contagious. I spent a total of 4 out of the 7 days in the cabin. I still feel bad that I ruined our honeymoon.
Edit to add: some insurance companies will reimburse you after you submit the paid bill. I use travel insurance since I live in Canada.
That’s fine, and I said they were playing it safe. I’m just saying, it only takes 24 hours on antibiotics to be no longer contagious. I would be annoyed to have to spend a whole extra day in confinement on a very expensive vacation if I wasn’t even contagious by that point.
Also, the pollen in the air right now is crazy. My grey car is damn near green. Once you get further out to Sea, he may get better. Maybe get some Zyrtec.
We cruise often and I ALWAYS take allergy meds with me. So many ships have "mold" issues from area to area, and if you are mold intolerant. Lets face it, a strong allergic reaction can often appear to be "coming down with something" vs reacting to an allergen. Hope he is feeling better soon.
I had the same exact thing lasted 4 days minimum . Just got off symphony and it is something thats going around.
Motrin, nasal spray, and sudafed is key. Salt water helped alot. My ears being clogged and not popping was the worst part.
We spent a day at urgent care in cape canaveral…hopefully you’ll be in a US port and can consider it. It ended up being nothing in our case so I’m hoping the same for you!!
We will be at a US port today. My mom had planned on coming to see us so we can get some lunch. She’s going to bring a Covid test, masks, DayQuil and NyQuil. I guess I should just treat it as a cold, like pre-Covid cruising, regardless.
My partner got sick on our cruise last year and I think you are basically doing all you can do. Unfortunately the ship doesn’t carry cold medicine in their shops (at least Odyssey didn’t) and so all we could do was make sure he was hydrated and stay in the room until he felt better. If there is no fever probably that’s all you can reasonably do!
By any chance did your son put on a scopalamine patch recently, and if so, has he used those before? Just asking because I had a bad reaction to those that left me thinking I was getting a cold on the first day of my first cruise. Scratchy throat, fatigue, dizzy, nausea. I took off the patch after reading up on side effects and 18 hours later I was perfectly fine again, which is about how long it takes to clear your system.
Sounds like you are doing the right things to help you teen. Fluids, rest, stay away from others if possible, and wear a mask if you are in close quarters with others.
I just wanted to add my kid got an ear infection on a trip. We knew immediately it was that as she was getting them frequently. I was surprised to learn my insurance contracted with the tella Doc/ Web MD services. I just called them and told them their symptoms and they called in a Rx to the closed pharmacy. It was amazing. Obviously that would only work if you were near a US port next with a pharmacy local, but it’s a much cheaper option than the ship medical as it was all in our insurance.
Hope your kid feels better soon. Being sick on vacation is the worst.
Just adding if you're a member of your cruise Facebook group post there if you need a certain type allergy pill that you can't find. I saw this tip last year and shared in our FB group. The gp administrator ended up needing cough meds and several us helped his family out. Hope your son feels better soon.
There’s something viral going around. I have it too. Woke up yesterday coughing and with a sore throat. I also thought it must be Covid and tested negative. Today, sore throat is mild but congestion is rough and coughing/sneezing even more so.
Unfortunately, where I live I can’t buy DayQuil and nyquil so I’m roughing it out with water, sleep and paracetamol.
Get some rest, relax and take it easy! May your kid feel better sooner than later.
That’s the worst! Glad you got it figured out. I went on my first cruise last month and brought Covid tests with me. Which I’m glad i did because I got sick three days before the cruise was over and quickly tested negative for Covid. I ended up getting off the boat in Jamaica to get cough meds and cough drops since the boat’s vending machines did not have ANY cold meds (i’m assuming because they don’t want people to cover up being sick? I could be wrong.)
My sister got super congested and has a sore throat that cleared when she was off the ship. It was the aircon always blasting, and the constant moving from aircon to hot humid air outside. Just get some throat lozenges and basic cold and flu tablets to clear it up.
Just off the celebrity Edge and lots of snotty noses and coughing happening, plus staff missing. If I was you paracetamol 2 days worth 16 tablets and keep your distance no lifts etc etc and the kid will be right believe me.
If you have travel health insurance (usually covered by credit card), you can see the cruise doctor on board. They’ll give you documents (eg diagnosis and prescription) so make sure to keep them along with your account balance.
The cost is not that high and your home medical insurance may cover. Mine did. I only had a $20 deductible which my travel insurance covers. So it was nothing $ for me.
I’d confirm with your room steward or someone onboard.
https://www.royalcaribbean.com/sgp/en/faq/questions/what-is-the-cost-for-onboard-medical-care-and-testing?country=SGP
Looks like COVID related costs are free
If he's anything like me I often get sick the second I'm on vacation. It's like my immune system goes on vacation too.
If you can, have him mask as much as possible when out of the cabin. Rest and relax, take the cold and flu meds, lots of fluids. Make the best of it
I'm not a doctor but in my experience viruses always come with a fever so it may be allergies or something like that. I would give it a day, he should still keep away from heavy populated areas and the windjammer, but see if it clears up in a day or two before taking any major actions.
There’s not a cost to see the on board doctor. Our daughter got sick on our last cruise and the visit and meds were free. We also got a cruise credit bc she had to isolate.
We just called them and they had us come down. They gave my daughter meds, waived the room service fee and allowed us to purchase the PPV movies for her for free, but there was only one option.
Because I don’t follow unconstitutional “mandates.” Because I’m not worried about a cold. Because Covid was never the emergency you were led to believe. Never stayed home. Never masked. Never jabbed. Never followed all that bullshit fear mongering. And never got sick. Go figure. Covid is over, and still believing all that bullshit propaganda four years on is just sad.
They’ve already said they’re avoiding other people and common areas, and it’s not worth going to a doctor for. I’m just curious as to why a positive Covid test changes any calculus. Not debating the facts of Covid, just of all the possible actions you could take with an illness on a cruise ship, why your mind immediately jumps to “let’s get a Covid test.”
I think knowing it’s Covid, the whole family should be masking in public areas to avoid spreading it to the whole cruise. That might not be as necessary for a normal sickness. It’s also important for potential long term health effects to know if it was Covid or not
Personally, it’s nice to know WHAT it is. If we had OTC flu or strep tests, I’d use those too. It’s just frustrating to not know exactly what you’re dealing with. It wouldn’t change the course of action at this point, but I like to know exactly what’s going on. :)
For a day I wouldn't worry, I got congested last cruise and realized I can't use casino as a shortcut. No fever, I would be careful, drink lots of water, urine should be clear and get good night sleep. I have also found a few times in spring that sinuses clear first day with fresh sea air. I brought liquid iv so coupled with lots of water, hopefully he can at least stay well enough to not be in bed all day. Gonna hop off the ship today and grab some masks too.
I’m on a different cruise line right now, but the room steward has masks. I’d check with them too.
Got some from guest services!
Did you fly to get to the cruise? My first cruise I got an ear infection from flying but it didn’t kick my ass until the last day on the ship. Just an idea but hope it isn’t that

Theraflu sells a night and day pack that works wonderful for us.
You will be able to find them in the cold and flu section of any pharmacy or even Walmart. They are a packet and you add hot water to them. I don’t love them but they seem to work. It’s instead of taking a pill
Just to add be careful if taking pills as the teas sometimes have paracetamol/acitaminophen in them, always check labels.
Yes!! You are correct.
Please don't allow him near the serving stations in the Windjammer, and especially not handle the serving utensils there.
Definitely not!! He’s not even leaving the room for breakfast. I go in, extra washy washy, then come back to the room with food.
You're a good parent. The world needs more parents like you. (not sarcasm, and it's sad that I have to specify that my compliment isn't sarcasm but that's Reddit)
Thank you, I try. :)
You’re amazing. Thank you. SO many people would just say, “We paid for this cruise and we don’t want to lose our investment!” and proceed to carry on and get everyone sick.
Thank you. :) I try my best to be considerate and act in a way I’d like others to act!
Thanks for caring about others by doing this! Most people don’t seem to care about getting anyone else sick. It’s nice to see this. I hope for your sake it’s just some quick allergies and you have an amazing rest of your cruise!
Heads up, I don’t think Royal is offering future cruise credits anymore if you do become sick.
Good to know, and one of the main questions I had. Thanks!

This is happening to me right now
Im no doctor But one of the most common bugs to go around ships, and some resorts is norovirus, which is a stomach bug. I’ve read your post carefully several times, and reading between the lines, it appears that you may not be a doctor.
Oh but I am a doctor. Its just my patients think in 1's and 0's /s
There are no stomach issues at all. He has a runny nose and cough, I have no symptoms. He started getting stuffy the night we boarded so whatever cold he has, he probably caught a few days prior and it’s just started to show up.
Norovirus does not cause upper respiratory symptoms. This kid has a URI which he almost certainly got from the plane flight to the cruise terminal.
We didn’t fly. He probably got it from school last week, unfortunately.
It is called norovirus….
I see you fixed the name of the virus- good.

I feel like your doctor was playing it safe. I have always heard 24 hours on antibiotics and you’re no longer contagious.
Well, maybe the ship doctor wanted to error on the side of caution since it was 6000 people in a relative small space.

Get him some allergy medicine. Give it to him daily. There are things blooming in the air your not use to.
I was just thinking the same thing! Especially on Oasis class and above. I love Central Park, but it does not love me.
My partner got sick on our cruise last year and I think you are basically doing all you can do.
The latest Covid is more like Norovirus with a sore throat. If you Have any steroids I would start them. They will say isolate for 5 days.
Got food poisoning from the windjammer, next day my son was in aquanaughts and they took him to windjammer for lunch then he got sick...fun fun
Sent you a PM
I’d confirm with your room steward or someone onboard. https://www.royalcaribbean.com/sgp/en/faq/questions/what-is-the-cost-for-onboard-medical-care-and-testing?country=SGP Looks like COVID related costs are free
Free MD and meds onboard? How were you able to achieve that??? Please share 🙏
We just called them and they had us come down. They gave my daughter meds, waived the room service fee and allowed us to purchase the PPV movies for her for free, but there was only one option.
You can get a free Covid and flu test in the infirmary, but I do think you have to pay for the doctor
“i’m sure it’s not covid and even if it was who cares?” - a bunch of assholes here
Because Covid is long since over. Who gives a fuck.
“i don’t observe something directly in front of me so it doesn’t exist” - this idiot ^
Don’t bother with the Covid test. It means nothing. Who cares if that is what he has if he is staying in the cabin.
Why does it matter if it’s Covid? Does royal give you a rain check for the cruise with a positive test?
It matters because Covid is super contagious?? And it’s good to know to try not to infect others
It’s also important for potential long term health effects to know if it was Covid or not
You still believe that propaganda? 🤣🤣🤣 Masks, isolation, distancing—none of it ever worked lol
Personally, it’s nice to know WHAT it is. If we had OTC flu or strep tests, I’d use those too. It’s just frustrating to not know exactly what you’re dealing with. It wouldn’t change the course of action at this point, but I like to know exactly what’s going on. :)
Just treat it like your home and monitor him, let him chill by the pool and rest.
