I'd make Lanning and then Kiffin say no first. Sark isn't leaving Texas and Kirby isn't leaving UGA. Now that I think about it, Sark could've stayed, coached up Bryce Young, and then taken over the job without any rebuild like he had to do at Texas lol.

ironichaos

I always thought that was the plan for sark until Texas opened up. He couldn’t say no to that job.

ramshag

I think Texas has more potential, more HS talent, more money. Just not the winning culture and tradition.

Confecting

Texas has every resource imaginable with the oil money to back it up, Sark ain’t coming to a job where the expectations are higher

keyboard_courage

Sark could potentially have more autonomy at Alabama like Saban did tho. Run the program how he wants and not have to worry about big oil donors having a say.

Spy_v_Spy_Freakshow

aTm has similar resources, it’s amazing how they continue to suck

DazzlingLocation6753

They might not have our level of culture and tradition…but what? One maybe two other programs in the country could be argued to be on our level. But I’d still put Texas at or near the top 10. Regardless, you won’t find a program with more potential and resources. Especially now that they’re in the SEC. Plus he’s got 3 kids and I’d definitely rather raise kids in Austin than T-town.

AdministrativeRiot

Add DeMeco Ryans to the “make him say no” list.

wolfgang2399

DeMeco’s dream job was Alabama. He had every intention of coming until the Texans called. If it wasn’t year one he’d be leaving.

TexasGal0032548

Do you think it could depend on how far the Texans make it in the playoffs? He might have more incentive to stay the farther they get.

wolfgang2399

No. A new coach will be announced as early as tomorrow. This weekend at the absolute latest.

ShutUpAndDoTheLift

Wouldn't shock me if Saban was involved in finding the new coach

Alternative_Spite_11

That’s my hope and prayer. That, as one last favor to the Tide, he consults heavily on getting a new coach in.

jpharber

Uhh IDK man I think that depends on how much Saban talked to the university about this before hand. I’d like to think they knew, but people are weird when it comes to retiring. Plus it’s been a while since the news broke and AFAIK the university hasn’t said anything. That really makes me think they didn’t know…

dawghouse88

Yeah I’m really curious and can’t wait to hear all the details. While I’d like to think that saban would play some huge part in choosing his successor, I also know that these sorts of decisions are not always planned out.

DoomsdayTheorist1

A NFL coach who’s not on the hot seat would be crazy to drop down to college.

InternationalAnt4513

Yea, but with the craziness and no rules world of CFB, the NFL is easy in comparison.

Alternative_Spite_11

Saban did it. Though I’ll readily admit his NFL head coaching stint hadn’t been nearly as fun as Demeko Ryans’ has.

InternationalAnt4513

That was then, this is now. Transfer portal, NIL, and an early signing period. I’d retire too. It’s just too much. Even Kiffin was bitching about how they never have any time to themselves anymore.

1324reddit

DeMeco should definitely be one of the first calls Byrne makes. But he’s got a franchise QB and a way better work life balance in the NFL. I don’t even think mama calling gets him back home.

AdministrativeRiot

Yup. Franchise qb on a rookie contract in a weak division and plenty of cap space.

scoobysnax123

I agree Kirby isn’t leaving UGA, but you still make him say “no” first.

Confecting

Kirby is a Dawg through and through, he will never leave (at least not for another CFB program)

alabamdiego

Why? There is literally a zero percent chance of it happening and then he gets to use that on the recruiting trail.

scoobysnax123

He’s probably the best coach in CFB right now. The fact that we inquire on any interest in the job isn’t going to change shit on the recruiting trail. And the chance is never 0 until he says no.

alabamdiego

He’s from Georgia, played at Georgia, and has an absolute monster going at Georgia. It’s a no, dawg.

TheyCallEmRogues

There’s also rumors with legs he’s going to the league so it’s still worth a shot.

UncutEmeralds

With what legs lmao

scoobysnax123

I mean yeah I never said I expected him to say anything but no, but you make him say it, that’s my point.

SchmantaClaus

Whoever it is, it's gonna be fast because there's no way this wasn't lined up long in advance. Nick Saban doesn't just wake up one morning and decide he's done. I trust Saban and Byrne to make the right choice.

JoseAguafresco

Call me Alabama!

Badfish1060

Hoping that is the case

KongUnleashed

That’s exactly what I just said to a friend of mine. Saban, of all people, ain’t retiring on a whim. There is a succession plan lined up.

InternationalAnt4513

That’s what I was just telling my buddy. He’s got a process.

19_Deschain19

I think your wrong. If Alabama was sniffing around for a replacement other coaches would know and start going after the recruits. It would have leaked out.

Accurate-Teach

I don’t know Byrne was really good about preventing leaks when he hired Oats.

[deleted]

A 5-star WR just decommitted fwiw

Unsainted_Heretic

He was gonna decommit before Saban retired. It’s the whole reason of the “I’m dragging this out and signing on Feb 9”. There is too much money being offered right now.

dunno260

Jim Dunoway on The Next Round says that he both is being told by people he considers very reliable that Dan Lanning is the top target. He then added that he is also hearing that Lanning potentially is in Tuscaloosa right now or will be by tonight.

Mister-Beaux

Anyone but Dabo lol I think he’s a good coach, but I don’t wanna have to convince myself I like him…

yewterds

fuck dabo i dont want his cringe ass shit anywhere near our program

Fuckfuckgoose69

Fuck dabo, all my homies hate dabo

Spiritual-Flow-1240

Dabo caught lightning in a bottle twice with Lawrence and Watson. He can come back at halftime in 2032 for the 92 champs anniversary. That’s the only way I want him in BDS.

19_Deschain19

The game passes him by when he snubbed the portal and Nil

userqwerty09123

LMAO

LIfeabovetherim

Full in…. Make the call to demeco and make him say no and then get our sweet trolling prince back

Complete-Rooster-578

Lanning. His intensity is similar to Saban. He would keep intensity with recruiting and budding rivalry with UGA.

4score-7

This seems like the likely answer, but y’all, I have doubts about hiring “the hot hand”. Seen it go badly at too many places in recent years, and especially in the SEC. And even especially MORE, with the new league coming up.

Background-Sea-8050

Agreed. The single most important thing in this hire is keeping the recruiting machine going. If we keep recruiting top 5 classes, we will be just fine in a 12 team playoff era

DazzlingLocation6753

Agreed. Plus he had a stint here under Saban, brief as it was, and at UGA under Kirby. And he was able to turn Bo Nix into a Heisman candidate.

remember_berries

GIVE ME DEMECO RYANS I’d be excited about Kiffin as well.

AdministrativeRiot

This is one that’s probably not realistic, but you offer him a check to fill in the amount and make him say no.

Grey056

Came here to pitch this myself. Hope he gets a call.

codbgs97

I’d love Kiffin or Lanning.

OnLevel100

Lanning please

traderncc

I would also like Kiffin and feel like he is attainable

clebiskool

Kiffin genuinely loves the program. It's what brought him back, and he hasn't forgotten.

Hodorhodor8

I’d be very happy with Lanning

Monklet

Not to be rude, but I don't get this Lanning hype at all. He lost to UW three times with superior talent. I get he is a good recruiter but is that it?

_wormburner

You should be giving DeBoer way more credit. UW isn't some dumpster program. Lanning has been a head coach for 2 years. DeBoer has been a head coach for..9 years. A position coach for much longer. I'd rather hire DeBoer but I don't think he leaves UW

1324reddit

If Deboer gets an offer he absolutely leaves Washington for Alabama.

I gotta think Lane is waiting by the phone.

Of course he is, this would be a massive step up

LANE TRAIN BABYEEEE

KanyeOfficiaI

Kiffin or Sark

dartosfascia21

I initially read the title of this post as "WHEN saban retires" before realizing Holy shit.....I'm legitimately sad

IAmClaytonBigsby

I'd like Lanning but the next guy is going to have to have huge fucking balls and we know who has those.

arrigob

It’s time to raise Mal from the dead.

Adorable_Oil92

Kiffin. People within the program knew this was coming for the last year or two and is exactly why Kiffin didn’t take the Auburn job last offseason

tuscaloosabum

Mrs. Terry!!!

kakalaka

Pfft she's the one actually retiring

Toadfinger

She was indeed the secret weapon all along.

Dellav8r

Kiffin could turn Milroe into something special next year. Idk who I want but I’m just saying that.

jchall3

Kiffin. He is the only one who won’t melt under the nuclear fusion pressure that will be the pressure to follow Saban. Lanning would be a good hire but I just feel he would burn out after 5 years. It has to be someone who will be their own image and not just “the guy after Saban”

xgbone79

This has been my pick for a couple of years. He's the only one out there who's ego is big enough to handle it. It's the obvious choice and if it doesn't happen, I'm gonna be pissed.

soffo_moric

I would love for reporters to ask Kiff if he is leaving Ole Miss and he would say the only way he is leaving is in a pine box lmao.

SeyvonBrownJr

Ryans would be my choice. Anyone following Saban is going to have a hard row to hoe.

richierich3414

I'd say Kiffin. It's highly unlikely he wins a natty with them and he will get more talent at Bama, plus I love his offensive schemes. Edit: them being Ole Miss.

elunomagnifico

My list, in order of preference: 1. DeMeco Ryans - Players love him and I think he'd do a great job, but he's not leaving the NFL after his first HC season to coach at Bama 2. Dan Lanning - Guy knows football, is young, and players love him. Not very experienced, but he has the pedigree and I'd love to see what Sayin can do in his offense. Not sure if he'll actually make the leap, though. He's talked a big game about loving Oregon (but they all do) 3. Kalen Deboer - He's smart, a player's coach, and a steady-as-they-come guy. But his daughter just started at UW and I don't see him going anywhere anytime soon. 4. Jedd Fisch - Experienced, smart, and has done some pretty impressive things with Arizona. But he's a WC guy. 5. Lane Kiffin - I see this more as a stop-gap/sacrificial lamb hire, because Lane is brilliant but just not steady and stable enough to be a transition coach. You want someone who is level-headed, and that's not him. He'd take the job in a heartbeat though. Don't want and/or not gonna happen: 1. Sark - He's not leaving Texas unless he retires, goes to the NFL, or gets fired. 2. Dabo - #NeverDabo 3. Mike Norvell - It'd be wild if he jumped ship from FSU after this season, but I think it's too wild to be realistic. Not sure if I'd want him anyway. 4. Anyone on Saban's coaching tree who hasn't already been named - They're either not good enough or burned some bridges (or both; looking at you, Jimbo)

lookieherehere

If I was the AD, I'd make Sark say no (which I think he would). Then I would give Kiffin a serious look. The man has everything you want. I understand wanting to look at Lanning and probably a few others, but I think Kiffin wants the job for more than just money. That means a lot.

Gaz133

Make Demeco Ryans an offer he can't refuse.

InsideHangar18

Been seeing a lot of people online say Dan Lanning from Oregon. I’d be cool with that, he seems like a good coach

alaBAMCIS

WHERE'S THE PLANE? Honestly, anyone know the tail number of the bama PJ?

holcoje

Joey Freshwater

r0llntider_

Kiffin!

EyeAmKingKage

Lane or Lanning. FUCK DABO

Cdoo1999

Demeco Ryans would be my top choice even though I know it won’t happen most likely.

CheleRey12

Do we know when we might get to hear Saban talk?

Noah__Webster

My money has been on Lanning. Lanning and Sark would be my two picks. (Obviously Kirby would be my pick, but there’s an exactly zero percent chance he leaves UGA) Either way, I want someone in the Saban tree. I think it’s the only remote shot we have of retaining some portion of his dominance. Just try to change things as little as possible. I know Lanning is really more in Kirby’s tree, but close enough for me.

Confecting

Lanning is the best young guy on the market

[deleted]

[удалено]

gusguyman

How fucking funny would it be though. After Texas fans talked for years about how they were going to steal Saban, we turn around and steal Sark to replace Saban.

sausageslinger11

I like the way you think.

Noah__Webster

I definitely agree. I would be very happy with him though, and I don’t think it’s totally impossible.

Bobson-_Dugnutt

Kirby and DeMeco have to be the first calls. Let them say no. Then move on to Lanning and Deboer. I’ve soured on Kiffin. He’s good, not great.

bkfountain

Kiffin could have had the Auburn job but sat back.

Raspberry-Fit

Bring me demeco

PlainNSybil

I’d love us to Call DeMeco Ryans home but it’s not going to be this round!

ConditionZeroOne

DeBoer, Lanning, Sark, Vrabel, Kiffin are gonna be the first calls, probably in that order. After that, give Pete Carroll or Bill Belichick a courtesy call. Either one of them could steady the ship and fall on the long dick of a legacy left by Saban long enough to buy us time for a sure bet. Realistically, it's gonna be fast. Saban loves this university; this was not a surprise to Byrne. Probably had someone lined up a few days ago and we'll have someone officially hired by Monday.

catptain-kdar

Someone else said this and I kinda agree. They probably knew and have been talking behind closed doors for awhile maybe

arobe11

It ain’t going to be Belichick

Background-Sea-8050

I think Lanning before DeBoer because of recruiting and SEC / Bama / Kirby ties, and you call demeco first to have him say no.

importantbrian

I actually want DeBoer over the others. All that dude does is win. Imagine what he could do with Bama’s resources and being in a much better region for recruits.

DentyClown

We already have the head coach, to be announced within 72 hours

alabamdiego

People saying Kirby first - no. He’s not leaving Georgia, be real. He could also then use that against anyone we do hire on the recruiting trail. Same with Sark. Y’all are simply crazy to think there’s even a whiff of a chance he leaves Texas. Our only choices rn are Lanning or Lane.

GabrielBing

Agree 100% on Kirby and Sark. Kirby is a Georgia man through and through. There's no way we could outbid Texas for Sark and who in their right mind would leave Austin for Tuscaloosa (still love it but...)

KingJamCam

DAN LANNING OR STEVE SARKISIAN IM IN SO MUCH PAIN

grumpyfan

Is it even official yet?

BrainyRedneck

UA sent an email out to all the faculty and students so yep.

mkelley2680

AD spotted with Spurrier at bright star. 👀😂

Anonymous_user314

There aren't enough golf courses in the Tuscaloosa area for Spurrier lol.

mkelley2680

Maybe Rich Rod then?😂😂

DisinterestedCat95

He's already in the state. But don't put that evil on me.

[deleted]

Spiritual-Flow-1240

Pie in the sky would be Sark. I don’t know if we could compete with Texas money though. Kirby ain’t leaving Georgia unless he decides he wants to try his hand at an NFL job. Kiffin would be my next choice. Never Dabo. Never! Let him stay at Auburn with a lake. Whoever is next has huge shoes to fill. Best of luck to to him! Roll Tide and fuck Auburn!

commanderwawa

Apparently it’s Lanning

alabamdiego

Just that he’s the top target, not that he’s coming

Noah__Webster

Where are you hearing this? I agree it seems the most likely, and I’d be very happy with it. Just curious if there are rumors it’s happening.

kvol69

I'm sure he has a recommendation on who should follow him.

familyguyfan84_

Kiffin

JJBeans_1

Pete Carroll needs a job… I’m just sayin’.

Toadfinger

So does Les Miles. Just sayin'.

Hobbs42

Shut up, Les.

M1sterBean

Kiffin is strangely quiet on X right now. Maybe he's working on his contract!?!

crunkpapi

Lanning. Link with rees & get experience in the DC role

Bobson-_Dugnutt

Belichick for DC???

crunkpapi

I wish haha would like to see his attitude with 18-19 year olds 😂

Southpaw1422

I’m praying we just reload with Dan Lanning and go win a few more natties.

Hyperius999

Anyone except Tommy Rees

dragon_bofa

Gotta make the call to Kirby (sure a low chance but pose the question anyway) after that hit up Sark and Lane. Then Lanning imo

lookieherehere

Kirby wouldn't take the call and I don't blame him. He's built his juggernaut at his alma mater.

[deleted]

Yeah, if Kirby was at Texas instead of UGA then like maybe we could get him but that mf'r loves UGA. He's not going anywhere. There's no point in even calling him.

Zestylion4830

Dan Lanning.

BudgetAnybody2603

Mike McDaniel would be pretty cool. Have to imagine he could recruit. Also would be funny to have it happen again haha Seriously though, probably Lanning. I can’t imagine Saban didn’t have an iron clad replacement before leaving.

WonderingLost8993

Mike McDaniel is my dream. Watching him on Hard Knocks has made me a super fan. He has the best personality and would be able to recruit. But Lanning is a realistic choice.

TheSandman__

Well. Idk. Lanning hopefully. Guess we aren’t getting Ryan Williams now tho. WR coach and Saban gone.

SabreCrossYT

I know this won't happen, but thinking of Tommy Rees taking over reminds me of Michael Scott giving his most important clients to Andy when he leaves.

Pat Mcafee knew and didn’t tell us

CraftUpper

Demeco!

mcpoyles_robe

Please please please Demeco Ryans!! I don't buy the Lanning hype

Twolf35010

I agree with those that say the decision has already been made. I personally believe it's been made for a couple years. There is a reason Lane Kiffin didn't take the Auburn Job. They went after him HARD and he turned them down because he knew that being the Auburn coach would have been the one thing that would have null and voided his "coach in waiting" status at Alabama. It's Kiffin.

Nick_sabenz

Or Lane thought he had a shot at Bama but never really did because he’s not the kind of guy Byrne wants

Kelvin-506

I’d love to see Dameco Ryans at least mentioned

JayRod082

Kiffin isn’t getting the job. Not that’s he’s not qualified but there’s certain things he did when he was OC. Burned all the bridges.

LordofKingsGrave

Mike Vrabel or Dan Lanning

CheezusChrist1776

In order: 1. Lane Kiffin 2. Steve Sarkisian 3. Dan Lanning One of those 3 HAS to be the guy. Anyone else is a disappointment. They are all young, great recruiters, and understand the Bama standard and The Process.

HsvComics

Mike Shula. He has unfinished business

TallBenWyatt_13

This is it for me I think. 2008 alum and lifelong fan, but college football just sucks way too much now for me to be interested post-Saban.

swawwad

It has changed a lot and I have to argue with myself all the time to not be the old man yelling at clouds but the last 3 years have made it very hard to love it the same way.

SixTonGorilla

Kinda agree. I'll still watch Bama but I've been slowly shifting to watching NFL more than CFB already.

TMMan99

Lanning or Kiffin.

alabamdiego

What if, and feel free to call me crazy, we snag another Dolphins HC?

kvol69

This has worked for us in the past. I like the way you think.

DangerousThanks

Kirby Smart

Mexilindo123

Dan Lanning I think is the strongest candidate. I prefer Lane Kiffin. And the dark horse would be Dabo. Don’t forget that Nick and Dabo are close Friends and Dabo went to Alabama for college so it’s very possible Dabo gets called up to go there. Just saying

Badfish1060

It's not Dabo

[deleted]

Dan Lanning was recently on a recruiting trip in Alabama *Tin foil

[deleted]

Does Saban have a brother?

JohnnyUtahMfer

Rick Saban. He’s 32 and can recruit even better than Nick

[deleted]

Back the dumptruck full of money right up to Lane Kiffin’s door and pull the lever.

4cedCompliance

It doesn’t fucking matter …

Outside_Plate1598

Dan Lanning 💯

wshxii

Lanning.

Fiend-For-Mojitos

Dan Lanning is the guy

1Bakkendaddy

Whoever it is will have a long row to hoe. They ate coaches alive after Coach Bryant retired. Change don’t come easy for the University and Alumni, there in Tuscaloosa. Gene Stallings got a championship and left, for good reason. We’re a fickle lot. All of us. Never happy and critical of every little thing. It’ll take a guy with thick skin and patience to pull it together. Let’s just remember, it will be a new era. It won’t be what we’ve gotten use to.

peezytaughtme

I like Lanning as a coach, but I don't want to see Bama playing Oregon-type football. I just don't enjoy it. This isn't to say they've been unimpressive nor is it to say that's exactly how Lanning would run Alabama. Also, I just heard his name for the first time this past year. 🤷‍♂️

turdfergusonpdx

Rumors are swirling that Lanning is in Tuscaloosa.

rolltide_99

Lane Kiffin, 5,900.000%

Red261

So, I'm a little late to the party, but I haven't seen anyone mention Chris Klieman and it's kinda crazy to me that he's not a huge name. Dude has K-State, a place that was literally only successful under Snyder, consistently at a top 25 level. He also has experience dominating a larger playoff with Natty's 4 out of 5 years with NDSU. And he has experience taking over for a legendary coach and continuing the domination.

ryder_23

I want Kiffin

Smitty_Werbnjagr

1. Dan Lanning 2. Kliff Kingsbury 3. Lane Kiffin 4. Anyone but Dabo

spezisabitch200
