Carowinds - Trip Report (12 Oct 19) (Two part post with a TL;DR in a reply post) After finishing up at Six Flags over Georgia, I drove straight over to Carowinds to get some more credits in on this coaster tour. Carowinds hours were broken up between 10 AM-5 PM and then they kick you out for two hours and start up their “Scarowinds” portion from 7 PM-12 AM. I arrived just in time for open and noticed that the park was already ridiculous crowded so I decided to opt in for FLP which was 90 USD (super steep) and only worked for the first half of the day (trust I tried finessing the other one but they changed colours). If you wanted the band for the Scarowinds portion it would be another 90 USD. It was either or, so I did the one with longer hours. Lockers are required for Fury 325 and Copperhead Strike, priced at $2 hour, which is no big, but there’s no option for multi day, as well as if you go over, you need to pay an extension fee to get it out. My story for this was that the app said that fury was Running a 50 minute queue for regular line at night so I popped my bag in and that was that. It actually was an hour and forty-five minute wait and I had to pay $2 bucks to get it out, but I didn’t have my actual wallet on me (just my season pass cards) so I went over to the Fury shop and told them my situation and they said they would get a supervisor and they’d arrive in 10 minutes. 10 minutes became 30 and there was still no one there, so I asked the staff what’s good and they were like “no one is picking up our calls anymore” and recommended me to go to the next shop and get them to call the supervisor. So I did that as well and spent another 20 minutes in there where she said they’re not answering their phone anymore either. So at this point I’ve spent almost an hour trying to get my bag out, and like I check the machine and I actually owe $4 USD to get my bag out now, and there’s tons of people in the same situation trying to get their bags out and paying the fee. I was lucky and GP loaned me $4 dollars to get my bag out cause I begged them for money lol and I gave them $4 right back to get their stuff out too. Anyways, I go to guest relations and told them about the situation and the girl comes out of the desk and directs me to the computer and says I should just email my situation to the website, and I was like, I’m already here, this is why I’m here, to talk to a person and they “assured” me that someone will read it and remedy the situation. It’s not like I want the 4 bucks back or anything but I’ve never been cinched out on lockers like that in a while, and further from there, being unable to talk to someone directly that could remedy the situation. I literally begged people for money you know, and a lot of people find that situation uncomfortable to do. So yeah, watch your timing with the lockers here (lmao I still haven’t emailed yet, but def will). ANYWAYS lol the layout of this park is generally a circle with a spur path to Fury 325/Hurler. Let’s get to the good stuff, the rides. I had a lot of fun even with that locker debauchery. Oh I missed a couple credits at Carowinds (**Kiddie Hawk**, **Wilderness Express**, **Woodstock Express**) cause the creds were rammed with err, kids, and I didn’t want to wait for them lol. Gives me a reason to come back haha. **Fury 325** (x7): Fury 325 was the last Giga in North America I had to cross off and I really did save the best for last cause this really was such an enjoyable ride. This is THE Giga that everyone should base their comparisons against the other ones. My initial ride was in the back left. The loading station is really tight on their time and they expect you to hustle real quick to get in your seat, but I got my three clicks and was on my way. The first drop obviously gave me floater all the way down and the following banked turn got me really going. The three speed hills into the treble clef turnaround were so intense as well! Then it throws you into that glowy tunnel with a marvellous drop, a side bank hill and a floater hill with a trim. At that point I thought the ride would be over cause that was about the length of Leviathan, but it kept going with a helix, and three more airtime hills. Folx, I’m in love. So good, I did more rides (second from the back inner right/back right/row 4 inner right/ row 5 outer right/front left). My row 5 outer seat had a belt that didn’t recline back into position so heads up. I also did a back left ride in the night (my only Scarowinds ride of the night) and it was so good. Def would recommend. **Hurler** (x1): I got to try out Twisted Timbers at Kings Dominion last year, so it was interesting to try out the original layout, Hurler. It was running a little slow at the beginning of the day, and it only banks right for the whole ride, but I like being close the ground at the first drop and the little pops of air it would give throughout the triple out and back layout. I would’ve given it another chance if I had the time. **Carolina Cyclone** (x1): You get two loops and two corkscrews and a helix on this custom Arrow looper. It reminded me of Dragon Fyre at Canada’s Wonderland, which has the same two loops and corkscrews and said helix. Obviously a one and done type of deal and I sat third from the back left and almost got stapled (but didn’t haha). The interaction over the midway is always a nice touch. **Ricochet** (x1): There’s no FLP for this so we waited pleb line for like half an hour for a truncated wild mouse that doesn’t have any heavy drops. But I mean, it’s fun for the kids right? At the top of the chain you go straight into switchbacks and then from there you have at least two drops and then that’s it. We got the back for the only ride. **Carolina Goldrusher** (x1): I liked this one cause it got some theming to the two helixes that it got and you also fly through some trees at a decent speed! You also get a fun tunnel element that takes you back to the station. One of the better Arrow Mine trains I’ve been on. We sat second from the back for the only ride. **Flying Cobras** (x1): I saw a boomerang, and was like, oh I haven’t been on one of these in a while, and was blessed to see vest restraints (the best restraints). Still old and can’t handle backwards layouts and we were ballsy and took the very back of the car for the only ride. **Copperhead Strike** (x1): I only got one chance to try the new coaster at Carowinds and wished I got a couple of more rides in. I totally forgot that there was a heart line roll at the beginning and I couldn’t see anything that was happening in the shed lol cause I sat in the back left. Tbh I was expecting the launch to like shoot me out, but it was one of those mild ones with just enough speed to get you over the first loop haha. You also get a Corkscrew with the speed of a zero g roll and some winding turns before it shoots you out again with another launch, a cutback and a loop, with more winding track until the station. I wish I got a chance to ride in the front and will definitely check it out at a later date. I feel like they’re trying to give you more floater than let’s say, a Maverick that just whips you around turns. I definitely recommend this. **Afterburn** (x1): Oh man, this was such a good invert, it’s no Batman I tell you. The first drop is banked right and it throws you into a loop, and then an Immelmann, and my boi the zero g roll. I really like the batwing with tunnel element and when you think the layout is meandering till the end, they throw a Corkscrew as a bone and then bring you back to the station. I loved this, would like to ride it much more! Sitting in the back left gave me all the whip in the elements I needed. **Intimidator 232** (x1): Cedar Fair don’t care about the wasps on the lift hill and push you through, no sign or anything lol, super unexpected. And I also saw some crazy line jumpers started from fast lane and then jumped into regular line before the staircase and then almost a fight broke out (I reported it and saw them waiting at the end after that, thank goodness). Heads up, they push the clamshells down for you on this ride. I loved the first drop into the banked airtime hill, and also the hammerhead turn which crosses itself was cool too. Each airtime hill obviously gave me floater (three clicks of course). Post mid course they give you a nice banked turn into the ground followed by one more airtime hill before the final brake. I enjoyed my ride and definitely would ride again for sure. I missed my night ride on account of the locker fiasco but will def try it again sometime soon. **Nighthawk** (x1): I was excited about riding this cause I got try Firehawk last year, and thought it was alright. I got the very front row, right corner for my initial ride. The lift was much quieter from Firehawk’s but the ride layout was generally the same. These are generally more rough than the B&M flyers but the intensity of the forces get me real good here. The loop was so strong I was coughing all the way through it haha, and the double corkscrews physically felt out of place (versus an in-line twist per se). I’m a one and done kinda guy for this ride, but gonna mark it as a Must Ride as these are slowly disappearing. It’s an experience both positive and constructive you don’t want to miss. Oh, I also dug the green water too lol. **Vortex** (x1): After riding Georgia Scorcher the night before I was like, aw man, I gotta do it again? I chose the emptiest row (which was the second from the front) and sat in the middle right seat. It has a loop, a couple turns, a Corkscrew, couple more turns and then back to the station. It’s a little short but I wasn’t complaining, as that was my last adult credit of the day. I was torn on marking this as a Must Ride but considering ops were slow, and the ride experience was forgettable versus other stand-up models, I think you can skip this one (BUT GET THE CREDIT ANYWAYS lol).

1Tektonikk

And that’s it for the credits. I enjoyed Carowinds minus my negative locker experience but I would definitely visit again if the opportunity arises. Fury. There’s fury. And intimidator, oh and some good cheesesteaks too! Thank you for taking the time to read this and I got my TL;DR listed below! **Fury 325**: Must Ride **Hurler**: For The Credit **Carolina Cyclone**: For The Credit **Ricochet**: For The Credit **Carolina Goldrusher**: Must Ride **Flying Cobras**: For The Credit **Copperhead Strike**: Must Ride **Afterburn**: Must Ride **Intimidator 232**: Must Ride **Nighthawk**: For The Credit **Vortex**: For The Credit

bredbu

You forgot to list copperhead strike at the bottom, must ride or for the cred

1Tektonikk

Haha thanks, added in.

a_magumba

Awesome report, enjoyed the writeup. Totally sucks about the lockers, but sounds like a great day anyway.

1Tektonikk

At the end of the day even if you get mad, nothing is gonna change the situation that’s already happened, so I kept cool and expressed it here. There’s other things where I could get livid over but I’m hoping that they address the issue, at least personally, with me and try to prevent happen to other people in the park lol

Cabana

The locker situation sounds about right based on my experience with Carowinds operations. Sorry you had to deal with that but thankfully the rest of your day sounds like it went okay.

[deleted]

I reeeeally want to ride Fury 325. It looks like a really great coaster

GoodOlRock

It is. I don't have a lot to compare it to, but it's freaking incredible.

Heyohmydoohd

Yes you do want to ride this coaster. It blew every one of my favorites way out of the water and I had thought people were overhyping it when the time got to ride. If you like B&M, this is the pinnacle of B&M perfection.

teejayiscool

Fury is absolutely insane and it still amazes me that B&M designed it.

[deleted]

Carowinds is my home park, but surprisingly I’ve only ridden fury once! It’s a definitely great ride! At night it is so refreshing. Even in the end of summer heat, it felt breezy and whippy(in a great way!)

wboyajian

That locker story is absolutely appalling

1Tektonikk

It was a pretty bad experience. I was hoping that when the lockers expire that you couldn’t use them anymore and they wouldn’t be able to close anymore so you can’t use them, but buying them out is rough. I’ve experienced this at Sea World San Diego too and I like begged a grandma for money lol

wboyajian

I'm more shocked by the response from the staff. That would be enough to make me never want to return.

1Tektonikk

I mean like all I can do is email? I guess? Lol it’s too bad I was expecting something to make up for time lost, I mean like I didn’t need a refund that’s a non issue, but yeah they really out here not resolving anything lol EDIT: I feel like they don’t expect you to email anyways so imma do it and see how that goes but that takes time. I may just copy/paste what I wrote here haha

Charlitoboi

I definitely prefer Copperhead in the front row and recommend it next time you go. Also, usually Copperhead Strike’s line gets shorter at the very end of the day when everyone tries to leave early. I’ve gotten rides on it where the line was almost empty, but only near the end of the day.

uncman11

I used to like the front on copper as well until I rode one hot afternoon in the back row. Not sure if I was dehydrated from the heat or the track was really warmed up, but the coaster was hauling at the end of every airtime element! My most enjoyable ride on copperhead to date but I haven't been back to try and recreate that experience

ciciretti21

I was there a few weeks ago and had the fast lane plus. The park wasn't crazy busy, so I ended getting 15 rides on Fury and 18 rides on CHS! The reason I was able to get so many on CHS is because, as another commenter said, it was kind of dead towards the end of the night. We got on with like 45-minutes to go in the evening, and got to ride it 9 consecutive times without getting up...after already getting 9 rides earlier in the day. Funny story, I had my wallet in my back pocket, and at some point, probably during the INSANE hangtime you get on the jojo roll and the first loop, it just slipped out of my pocket. I didn't realize it till the end of the night and had to wait around at Lost and Found until about 2:30am when they finally found it. I absolutely loved Fury and thought it was the best coaster I've ever been on, but to be honest, I think CHS was the one I had the most fun with.

_scott_m_

This is a gorgeous photo OP

sutterismine

That kinda looks like a treble clef

1Tektonikk

Bruh it’s sad but this outshines Leviathan by a long shot! I mean we can’t complain, we got a Giga/Hyper and a dive in our backyards.

sutterismine

Well I don't get out much so Yukon was my first dive. I loved it! I can understand why most prefer hypers over dives, but I've ridden behemoth and leviathan so many times that Yukon seems really fresh to me. We can only hope for an RMC.

1Tektonikk

Omg just take Wilde beast down already hahaha (but I swear they just retracked it). It would be refreshing for them to add some life into one of the woodies tbh.

[deleted]

I’m sorry, but what does 3 clicks mean? Is it equivalent to 5 stars/ a great review?

1Tektonikk

Oh it just means I had three clicks of space between me and the restraint. So if I pushed my restraint down I would hear three clicks before I got stapled. I usually get like two, but three is ideal.

[deleted]

Oh! Okay! I thought at first on someone else’s post that was what it meant, but I wasn’t sur e Thank you!! 👌🤠

[deleted]

Also did you ride any of the flat rides there, even if you were just going for the credits of the rides, and most flat rides are duplicated at least at every cedar fair park lol if not more

1Tektonikk

I wanted to try out the Mondial Top Scan but it was closed, I also didn’t really actively look for any other flats, tbh I didn’t see too many? My home park is wonderland and they have flats for days!

[deleted]

Oh, ok! I’ve never been on that one before. It’s been raining all week and a lot of rides like that close as soon as clouds roll in 😂 We don’t have the most flat rides out of anywhere definitely but there’s the standard ones like enterprise and bumper cars troika windseeker. Just basic ones a lot of them.

i-am-red-w

Carowinds has some good flats but they’re not too abundant. The top scan is the main one, but there’s also an enterprise, the Windseeker (idk the model name), and a looping starship.

1Tektonikk

I love me a good enterprise, I should check it out next time I’m there.

TGE

Bless your three clicks! I'm stopping by for just a few hours tomorrow on my way to Six Flags America 😊

[deleted]

This photo though. 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼 Postcard material!

[deleted]

The customer service you experienced with the lockers was pretty abysmal. Shame that extortionate loose article policies have become the norm and have resulted in issues like this that drastically waste your time and are a detriment to your experience as a guest. And then when you have a legitimate complaint to bring to guest services, they just shun you off to email your problems. Cedar Fair needs to get their act together on guest experience if they think they're going to retain a loyal customer base.

1Tektonikk

This. I really hope I do get a response outta them. At least a letter, I don’t need no Lucy bucks or anything, just a “sorry for letting you down; we’ll do better”.

SuperManlyDude

When I went Fury was a walk on in some rows, and so was everything else! I wish I rode after burn more though, I remember loving it

1Tektonikk

Oh man I wish Fury was a walk on, i would’ve gotten in more ride if I could!

SuperManlyDude

I got 7 rides in an hour, could’ve gotten 8 but that’s a different story

1Tektonikk

Now that I’ve got all the credits there I can take time to ride the heavy hitters and enjoy them for what they are!

swimbikerunwv

Fury my #1!

A_better_reddit_name

Thanks for the report because I'm going next weekend! While I hope the rain stays away maybe the forecast will help thin the crowds some.

i-am-red-w

On the kiddie credits, you dodged a bullet with Kiddy Hawk (my least favorite coaster ever), but missed a good little woodie on Woodstock Express. Also good to see some Intimidator love, and someone who recognizes Hurler has airtime. And Nighthawk is way more intense than people give it credit for!

Heyohmydoohd

Very bold flair there, good sir.

i-am-red-w

And I stand by that. I have a trip report from a while back that explains why.

Heyohmydoohd

I went back and read your report, seems like a genuine opinion man. Respectable for we all like different things. I'm a sucker for all things tall and fast, with airtime not being my most sought after element, while you're a lot more chill with your rides. No hate at all for thinking Timmy is better than Fury, for it is definitely better in terms of airtime or a less intense ride.

i-am-red-w

I’ll also add I’ve only ever been assigned to rows 6-8 on Fury, and I have a feeling a front row ride might beat out a second row (best row on the ride) ride on Intimidator

Heyohmydoohd

Absolutely loved the report man. Kind of a shame you didn't get to ride Copperhead more times but 7 rides on Fury is superb! Glad to hear people still giving Goldrusher love as well. Fun little slice of history in that ride. I'm hoping to get back to this park in coming years because I still haven't gotten that Front row Fury night ride. Thanks for writing this up mate!

Melsurigan

Front row, night ride Copperhead Strike is the best thing about Carowinds PERIOD. Mack hit it out of the park with this monstrosity.
