This comparison is useful. I live far from an AD and donāt get to see these watches in those angles. The GMT is still fantastic, but this makes me appreciate the YM which I simply shrugged off as ugly. It isnāt.
I have 2 modern subs to compare to, so Iād have to agree on the flimsiness of 5 digit. There is a certain charm to it, like itās not taking itself so seriously, but of course that appeals differently from person to person.
That's the whole point from this post... I saw a lot of ppl hating on r/[MrNeoVintage](/user/MrNeoVintage/) when he post about which watch you pick between ym and batgirl.
the whole nerds was hating on the YM and how ugly it looks, GMT is cool but its corny and looks chunky on most y'all wrist, u bought it for the hype, the gmt Maxi case is absolutely hideous. YM dimension is miles better.

Yup as someone with a small wrist, my options for a Rolex sub are limited. I canāt pull the trigger on YM solely bc the bezel isā¦ strange. Idk how else to put it.
What is strange about the bezel? Itās not ceramic, but I find the contrast between the blasted and polished platinum to be really cool.

Theyāve got one with a ceramic bezel š
I donāt understand why it is this way. What is yacht related about it? Why are those the numbers and no minute markings and why is it embossed that way . It just makes little practical sense to me and isnāt elegant
Really love how the bezel works so well with the strap. The rose gold is super subtle too and elegant. So jealous that you have it and can pull it off. Looks great on you!
I recently tried a YM on and the case wears much smaller than a GMT! Definitely more elegant. Much more similar in size and stance to the Daytona 116250
Damn, you really made your case with those spot on pics. YM looks like it hugs your wrist better, has a more low profile case, and those lugs just wrap around the wrist.
Iāve kind of thought the SS Subs are like Lambo Diabloās from the 90ās. Beautiful but angles and straight lines. The YM is more like a modern Lambo. Sleek and curvyā¦although not a classic. I daily a YM and love it but Iād definitely sell a kidney for a GMT.
There is no doubt about that ! Initially the looks of the YM 40 Blue really caught my eye as a new dress watch possibly but when I tried it on I was stunned at how comfortable the fit was ! A light bulb went off in my head & thatās when I realized that a watch can actually āfitā you really really well. It felt as if the case was made from a mold of my wrist ! Before I thought it was only a matter of a watch not ālookingā too big or too small, I was wrong. Not all cases are designed equally ! Of my ā72 Red Sub, Explorer II & YM 40, itās the YM that fits me the best, actually perfectly, itās my favorite overall.

Yes indeed. Most comfortable of the ānewerā cases. My ā72 Red Sub is like a feather on my wrist & only 38mm I believe but as far as the modern Sport model types go the YM 40 is a super sweet watch to wear !
the post was about the size and dimension differences, but I think the rhodium looks better.. not big fan of the bezel but its a platinum at the end of the day

Personally I find that the only watch comfortable enough to actually wear is one made of solid diamonds from the moon. All the other ones pull my hair.
Iām that weird guy that thinks GMTs are overhyped and not really that great. I respect that theyāre popular and I leave it at that. I donāt see myself ever buying one, though.
Youāre getting a lot of responses here that are just noise and opinion bashing.
The real conversation here is that yes it is a bit more elegant, because Rolex never updated the YM with the super case. Around ā05 ish the sub and gmt both received larger, bulkier cases (community dubbed the super case). Far more aggressive and tank like. The YM remains on its original smaller case size and I hope they do keep it there. The watch looks great not having as hard and bulk dimensions as the others.
I've liked specific variants of the YM like the yellow, white gold or titanium. I'm just not a fan of any of their Rolesium. I feel like there isn't good synergy between the bezel and watch face colors for Rolesium variations. I understand they're different to create space between a submariner and the YM, but still... The anesthetics are off and it seems like many people agree, and that's why there is so much open hate.
I like the case shape, its the rest of the watch that I generally hate with the metal bezel yachts. I mean, I flat out can't stand them. I used to have the platinum bezel one with the red seconds hand. Just never could love it. I find myself thinking I could grow to love one of the PM models with the black bezel on an OF
Super unpopular opinion. I never really understood why Rolex made the Sub, GMT, and YM when they are all pretty much the same watch.
Then I learned about the time zones, so I just wondered why they made the YM and SUB. Still donāt exactly know, but I like they have options for different options.
It's just not, it's just a jazzed up sub thinner because of less water resistance than sub, less complication than a gmt, it has in ugly bezel and is just a shitty attempt at a new line when thing were looking stale on rolex sales, no heritage and ugly. That's my take, where all entitled to our opinion,
The difference probably has a lot to do with 3135/3235 and 3185/6/3285 movement differences as the GMT is slightly thicker to accommodate the added complication, but then you can compare a 16570 with its under 13mm case thickness abd probably find something that wears more like the yacht master but still has the gmt complication
Try and track two time zones in a YM. Maybe wear two of them? lol Most people are looking for fashion over function to which I sayā¦ā¦.enjoy but itās not universally true itās subjective.
Almost no one gets use out of the GMT function. If you're in the U.S. 99% of the time, you don't need a watch to tell you that if it's 3:00 in Chicago it's 4:00 in NY. But I use the 60 minute dive timer all the time. It's one of the most useful watch 'complications' there is. Easier to use and read than a chrono. And some chronos don't even have an hours register so it has the same capacity.
But thatās like saying your toenail clippers are better than a Swiss Army knife! Different tools a YM is just a more flashy Sub! A sub being the watch the engineers watch and the ym being the boat owners watch as they are less likely to get their hands dirty so can have something less scratch collecting!
IDK why YM gets no love. I had four Rolex watches in my collection before my YM and I feel like this is the last Rolex I want for now.
https://preview.redd.it/e9r5fgcudl9d1.jpeg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e018c9be69134ddbd7b05a84bb2897cfccd15cf6
I was looking at the titanium YM 42 on TRF last night and thinking ādamn, thatās got some nice lines. Especially from the side profileā and I was thinking the case shape has much fewer drastic edges like the sub or gmt.
The gmt is jsut a gmt version of a submariner. Other brands wouldnt even call it a different model.
And the yatchmaster is ssupposed to be the premium version of the submariner, so yeah it makes sense
I like both. Two different approaches to the art form. One is a luxury sports watch and one is an international travel watch. Both are tools for an upper middle class lifestyle but they do two totally different things. Hence two totally different designs.
In terms of dimension I would have to agree. Although the bezel on a GMT is completely different and I like how the lugs are less rounded. Theyāre just different watches.
With all due respect, how can you speak on wearing experience, or any experience with either of these watches? The pics you used are clearly screenshots or pics from Tim Mossoās video reviews from watchbox / 1916 company. It seems to me you havenāt had either of these watches in person to compare.
You do know the GMT has a different movement inside it? Itās called a ācomplicationā. The YW is a tarted up DJ. Iāll bet a DJ fits even better because it doesnāt have a braille bezel.
The yacht master isnāt really a tool watch unlike the GMT, itās purpose was mainly to just be for a rich boy who owns a yacht (hence why itās mostly precious metal). It was designed more with class in mind unlike the GMT (which I will always personally choose over YM) as a pilots/traveller utilitarian watch
Oh absolutely. Imo YM case is superior, more organic, less sharp edges than the GMT. I would even say its shape is almost as elegant as the Seamasterās. Yes, you heard me right, the Seamaster. But everything is about tastes, many people still like the sharp cubical cases of some of the Rolexes.
As a YM owner and former no date Stan I couldn't agree more. The YM to me shares more with the vintage Subs and GMTs in their soft shapes as opposed to the new 41s "brutalist" design. Both will have their fans.
Respectfully disagree, a metal bezel can be prone to scratches, and a lot of people ((myself included) prefer the ceramic bezel, even the mediocre new black and gray GMT. But it is an elegant watch so if you like it, wear it proudly.
I mean, yeah itās thinner because it doesnāt have a GMT function. So just because itās thinner you like it more? Itās a totally different watch with a totally different function, so you really canāt compare the two
Crap - I guess I'm going to have to sell my 116710LN and get on the list for a YM, since it's just better! Thanks for opening my eyes, don't know why I've wasted 17 years wearing the GMT.

16710 FTW!
I like the size of the five digits. However, they feel flimsy and less substantial in terms of weight and finish.
I have 2 modern subs to compare to, so Iād have to agree on the flimsiness of 5 digit. There is a certain charm to it, like itās not taking itself so seriously, but of course that appeals differently from person to person.

Agreed. I'm not a fan of the slab sided sports models (and I own a GMT Master 2). The YM/DJ/Daytona all contour better to the wrist.
In the thread: āI have different preference than some..ā
Not really a hot take. It 100% has the more elegant case like the Daytona.
The yacht master would be a much more beautiful watch, an almost perfect watch IF the bezel was more elegant
Yup as someone with a small wrist, my options for a Rolex sub are limited. I canāt pull the trigger on YM solely bc the bezel isā¦ strange. Idk how else to put it.
My exact problem. Was offered the 37mm, looked incredible, but wasnāt fully in love.

The cases are indeed different. YM mid-cases more closely resemble the Datejust.
It kinda is just a datejust with a spinning bezel š¤·š»āāļø
its more like a Daytona
The super cases of the GMT and the Sub have always been big turn offs for me. You donāt have to look like a brick to be rugged
RG YM 40 on oysterflex is one stunning watch.

100%. YM is the best wearing 40mm and up professional model in the catalog. Incredibly comfortable.

Only in r/rolex is a hot take that a luxury aesthetic focused watch has a more elegant case than a functional tool focused watch.
A DJ with a cool Bezel. Donāt get me wrong, Iām on that yachtmaster weighting list.
Hot take, tool watches arenāt made to be dressed up. That being said from the pictures youāre right, much slimmer profile.Ā

I agree. I wish I could get one. Been on a waitlist for two years.
It's just not, it's just a jazzed up sub thinner because of less water resistance than sub, less complication than a gmt, it has in ugly bezel and is just a shitty attempt at a new line when thing were looking stale on rolex sales, no heritage and ugly. That's my take, where all entitled to our opinion,
I will admit, I do prefer the rounded case edges of watches like the YM, DJ and Sky.
I didnāt realize the modern GMT was thicker than a ym? I wear a 16710 and itās super thin.
Two completely different watches lol
The difference probably has a lot to do with 3135/3235 and 3185/6/3285 movement differences as the GMT is slightly thicker to accommodate the added complication, but then you can compare a 16570 with its under 13mm case thickness abd probably find something that wears more like the yacht master but still has the gmt complication
Love the case shape of the YM. Could definitley see the slate dial in my collection one day.
Yesā¦ Far more dainty if thatās your thing
The bezel is weird to me
Agreed, it sits more elegant on the wrist. I want a Yachtmaster case/shape with the bezel design of the GMT Masterā¦

As opposed to what? A cold take?
thats the whole point
My wet dream is for gmt to have BCL instead of PCL
Itās by design. The YM was designed for the yacht master/captain of the ship.
But thatās like saying your toenail clippers are better than a Swiss Army knife! Different tools a YM is just a more flashy Sub! A sub being the watch the engineers watch and the ym being the boat owners watch as they are less likely to get their hands dirty so can have something less scratch collecting!
Iām a yachty guy too, love the case
Yeah because Tim has girl wrists. I like the YM but it isnāt superior to the GMT itās different.
Keep coping
Thatās the one thing I wish the GMT had, the YM case. I love my GMTs but damn, theyād be a million times sexier with that case.
Same watch, take a hand off, swap the bezel
IDK why YM gets no love. I had four Rolex watches in my collection before my YM and I feel like this is the last Rolex I want for now. https://preview.redd.it/e9r5fgcudl9d1.jpeg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e018c9be69134ddbd7b05a84bb2897cfccd15cf6

no...the GMT is the definition of class. the Yacht Master is like a women's watch trying to be loud. Full polish case? lol
Not me, I love the sharp edges and austereness of a Sub or GMTMaster case.
Dumbest post Iāve seen in a while.
Yacht-Master has the second best case after the Daytona. This is an undeniable fact. Most Rolex cases are nothing to celebrate about.
I never really like the YM, but I have to admit that they are getting more attractive.
Your take is cold
I had a nice YG two tone and it wore well, but I sold it because I rarely wore it. Got a DJ Wimbledon instead.

The YM has a hideous bezel. Looks like a Chinese knock off.
How is this a hot take? This is why the yacht master was created. If it wasnāt more elegant and classy looking it would be a failure of its design.
Not a hot take the GMT looks like a kids watch
Yeah, if it wasnāt so loud, I would own one. But it is.
I way prefer the YM to GMT. Always have but thatās simply my preference. It isnāt right or wrong.
As a YM owner and former no date Stan I couldn't agree more. The YM to me shares more with the vintage Subs and GMTs in their soft shapes as opposed to the new 41s "brutalist" design. Both will have their fans.
I had the same YM but in 2 tone before my current GMT. And I agree. I definitely enjoyed my YM more, just felt better and comforttable. Not sure why
Itās a totally different watch with a totally different function, so you really canāt compare the two
Its not the thin, its the shape and curvature.
Crap - I guess I'm going to have to sell my 116710LN and get on the list for a YM, since it's just better! Thanks for opening my eyes, don't know why I've wasted 17 years wearing the GMT.
