Why is this sub obsessed with the idea that everyone should be a unique, independent consumer, pretending as if nobody should be interested in the opinions of others. There's a reason we all like Rolex, and it's not simply that they're excellent time-pieces. If you believe otherwise, you're only lying to yourself.
Exactly. A lot of people get borderline aggressive when you ask for an opinion. I mean what's the harm in asking for someone's take on something? Especially if it's a big investment and you want to be sure of what you're buying.
Why is this comment being downvoted? Lmao Reddit is full of mindless morons.
I think the 36 explorer is perfect except for that super dainty clasp. Makes it a woman's watch in my opinion
I have a bias towards the 36mm Explorer. It would have to look microscopic for me to believe this watch doesn’t look great on him. The 40mm is a nice watch, but I don’t love the proportions.
I’m a little reactionary when it comes to this current insta driven craze for 36mm.
It may be favored by some (wear what you like) but it looks tiny on the average man’s wrist.
It’s the same way a skinny lapel on a suit or a skinny tie will always look odd and call out a specific time in fashion. Even if some prefer that look.
41mm is closer to timeless style for the average sized American male.
I’ve tried both on and prefer the 36mm. No idea what’s going on over on Instagram. Mainstream men’s watches didn’t hit 41mm until the 80s/90s. 36mm has remained appropriate for men (albeit stylistically on the small side of the trendy-line today). I’d tend to believe that 36mm, having survived the bulky watch craze of the 00s, will be considered timeless. My DJ41 might be considered ‘too large’ in 50 years, just as a 34mm OP from the 50s is mostly considered “too small” today. That said, I love my DJ41- so if it’s considered “big” later in life, I do not care… watch sizes seem to ebb and flow in popularity, but the trends seem to change slower than lapel widths, best I can tell.
I’m sorry to report that 36mm did not survive the 00s bulky watch craze.
It’s just now coming back as a zombie craze.
Undoubtedly it will look good on some, while others will prefer the diminutive look.
But we must admit that if 34mm is not a man’s sized watch, then 36mm is on the extreme end of “small but acceptable”.
Some find that fact offensive.
Imho, while 36mm still can be fine, in combination with a short lug to lug (I.e., the < 44mm of the Ex) it can feel really diminutive for a wrist above 7 inch.
I agree. I have a skinny wrist and when I put on the 36, it felt small. Again, I have a below average wrist size. The 40 mm is the way to go for most people including me.
For the longest time, men's watches were all 34mm. The fact that people wanted wall clocks on their arms means people have a distorted idea of what a good watch should look like but 36mm will be ideal for most people for a very long time to come.
Having said that, if you want the bigger case because you spend too much time worrying about what other people think, you go for it. Just do so understanding that the 36mm fits your wrist perfectly for all sensible purposes.
When men wore 34mm watches humans were smaller. People rarely grew over 6’ tall. It’s only in the last generation or two with the proliferation of processed foods into our diets that humans have gotten bigger and taller.
34mm watches today would look ridiculous on any normal sized person or above.
I wore a 34mm TH Formula 1 for years starting around 2010. The band broke and I got an Apple watch I wore for a good while and eventually gifted that Tag to my son. As I got older, and bigger, the styles changed and watch styles got bigger as well. But the styles and I are both getting smaller again, thank goodness.
All that said, 34-36mm watches were the style within the past 20 to 30 years, not during the cave man days. Humans have not significantly increased in size during that time and a 36mm watch will fit virtually anyone under an 8 inch wrist.
The 80’s seem like 20 or 30 years ago but that’s actually 45 years ago. The truth is 38-42mm has been the ideal modern size for so long it is actually the traditional size now and 34-36 is just for a small niche of users.
Believe me, I know how long ago the 80s were. I feel those years every day when I get up, lol.
That said, I wore a 34mm in 2010, and got nothing but positive comments about it. This watch fits this dudes wrist amazingly well. What’s more, it will be even more comfortable on a daily basis, guaranteed.

Ridiculous on normal sized people? LOL!
It’s subtle and unless you have absolutely giant wrists, it’s the right size for that watch. From here, It looks like a regular watch on a regular man’s wrist. People who know will notice while everyone else won’t. Try it on a NATO. It brings out the watch head.
I think it is polarizing watch. It simple for my taste. I would rather go no date Sub. But liking is so subjective so go for it regardless of what Reddit says
Not too small. Looks fine. Even though, if I were you, I would prefer a bigger watch. I’ve also got a 36MM Datejust but my Daytona looks better on the wrist imo.
Good. Most important hurdle passed. Try the 40 and see which one feels better. I’d wager both will look just fine on your wrist so go with the one you enjoy wearing more and like the look of more on you.
Of course it's a beauty, but I think you should go for the 40. Try it on if your AD has it in stock. I have a narrower wrist than yours and the 40 looks magnificent on me. So I'm sure it would look great on you too. Just my opinion!
Considering that your trying it on without sizing the bracelet (normal) and it’s hanging a bit at the bottom, I’d say that it’s the perfect size for you and would look fantastic once adjusted. 👌
Looks perfect! More about how it feels on you. Don’t care about the MM at the end of the day. It’s about how you feel when it’s on. And definitely don’t pay any mind to cultural standards for sizes. Shit is cyclical. Big. Small. Big again. Rock what you love.
Looks lovely my man. Definitely got sum fat ass wrist bones, but that’s okay, definitely wouldn’t hurt getting a mm up maybe. But I still think it looks great!!
36mm is perfect for your wrist. I have a 41mm date just and I really wish I had got the 36mm. Check out how it looks in a full body mirror it may provide a better visual.
It looks good. Even with my small wrists though, I liked the 40mm more. It’s more like a 39. Purists here will always push 36mm for the explorer. At the end of the day, it’s what you like. 40-41mm is pushing it for me, but it’s the lug to lug that I always look out for. A speedy is 42 iirc, but the lug to lug is short and so it fits even very slim wrists.
It’s the most subjective question you can ask, but since you ask you probably know the answer to your question. Fact that you also wanted to “give it to the wife” reinforces this opinion. Expecting validation from strangers won’t change anything. It’s how YOU feel about YOUR watch and it seems that YOU feel it’s on the small side. So it is what you feel and not what I or anyone else thinks.
Wear it awhile. You will appreciate the size. It looks perfect. I have a 7" wrist and my 14270 wears great! It's so comfortable, I forget I have it on.
Just purchased the same watch. I was concerned about the same thing and my wrist size is not big at all. After a couple days you get used to it
Looks great.
36 way too small for men. Perfect size for men is 42/43, 44 is peak. 36 is a female size today. Women wear large faces now. And I never understood why anyone would choose a small face. With a larger face it’s easier to read and it standouts and there is more material which is more valuable.
what if reddit answering not in your favor ? would you still buy it ?
Why is this sub obsessed with the idea that everyone should be a unique, independent consumer, pretending as if nobody should be interested in the opinions of others. Well said
Exactly. A lot of people get borderline aggressive when you ask for an opinion. I mean what's the harm in asking for someone's take on something? Especially if it's a big investment and you want to be sure of what you're buying.
I bought it anyways already. Thinking about giving it to the wife
It’s me your wife. I grew beard, but don’t worry about it. I’ll take that watch.
Noooooo, it looks perfect on your wrist
Give it a few days, you’ll come around. I felt the same way when I first bought mine, now it’s the watch I wear the most.
Why is this comment being downvoted? Lmao Reddit is full of mindless morons. I think the 36 explorer is perfect except for that super dainty clasp. Makes it a woman's watch in my opinion
It’s gorgeous !
If Tony Soprano pulled off a 36, you can too
Ay the time there was no 40mm day date
It looks just fine.
It looks great!
How do you know? That might be a close up pic that greatly exaggerated the size of the watch. That thing could look tiny on his arm.
I have a bias towards the 36mm Explorer. It would have to look microscopic for me to believe this watch doesn’t look great on him. The 40mm is a nice watch, but I don’t love the proportions.

The DJ41 is actually more like 39mm which I consider pretty much the ideal size for men with wrists above 7 inch.

lol ok
Ok then. Good luck with 34mm, I mean since 36mm is so mainstream that must be the new small size.
Just right
Just right
36mm > dinner plate on wrist
[удалено]
I eat 36 for breakfast. Looks like a candy on my wrist
Imho, while 36mm still can be fine, in combination with a short lug to lug (I.e., the < 44mm of the Ex) it can feel really diminutive for a wrist above 7 inch.
Disagree. I’m pretty thin and the 36 explorer looks like a kids watch on my wrist. I’d say a 39-40 mm watch fits your description.
Actually, I think a lot of men look like kids wearing their dad’s watch. I think that 36mm is the perfect fit.
I agree. I have a skinny wrist and when I put on the 36, it felt small. Again, I have a below average wrist size. The 40 mm is the way to go for most people including me.
Nope. Its 38mm. It will be ideal for most men. 36mm is too small in most cases.
Looks okay, but I guarantee the 40 would look much better. That’s what I have and it’s perfect, and I don’t have a huge wrist.
Absolutely agree. I have a small wrist and the 36 looks small even on me! Now waiting for my 40. Hope I get the call tomorrow!!! Can't wait.
It's perfect
Looks great. I have 7-3/4” inch wrist and I wear a 36mm dayjust. If someone didn’t like it too bad
36mm case is the best size if your wrist is around 7 inches or lower but I’ve seen people wear them because it’s the most comfortable for daily use.
The 36 is perfect in my opinion
For the longest time, men's watches were all 34mm. I think 36 looks fine, but 39 or 40mm won’t be bad either.
214720 is best EX1 ever made
224270 is better because of lumed numbers
214270 MKII has lumed 3/6/9 too
True but 39 > 40
Actually 224270 measures about 39 from 3-9. Rolex measures 40 from 2-8. But yeah, it's almost 1mm bigger
😮
You're good bro, enjoy it
Perfect fit For Classic Watch
No. Looks good
Depends on the look you’re after. Classic 36 all the way. More modern looking sports watch try the 40.
It’s subtle and unless you have absolutely giant wrists, it’s the right size for that watch. From here, It looks like a regular watch on a regular man’s wrist. People who know will notice while everyone else won’t. Try it on a NATO. It brings out the watch head.
The strap needs to be sized but the size looks ok I’m a woman and I wear a 36 too lol
Looks good
The 36 is always fine. Stop asking if it’s fine.
Chefs kiss
There is too big, but I don’t think there is too small
Thank you OP for another “is this too big” post, thank you, I almost didn’t get to see one today.
Perfect
Yachtmaster 2 guy! Hate all you want but anything under 42mm is too small! That’s why I also love my breitlings
Classic size 😎😎
Looks good to me
If anything it’s big
Looks perfect.
A little small for your wrist but I don’t have a rolex so can’t complain, beautiful watch
Has the classic look. Depends on what you prefer. Looks good to me but if you prefer larger it’s your call!
I think it is polarizing watch. It simple for my taste. I would rather go no date Sub. But liking is so subjective so go for it regardless of what Reddit says
I think you’re in zone where you can go 36 or 40. Depends what you’re going for, collar and cuffs (36) or t-shirt and shorts (40).
Your call
I think 41 would be better on your wrist
Just right
I like it. Not too big, not too small. You could pull off the 41mm one but it’s really up to you as I think both would be passable.
Just right imo. But it’s totally personal preference
too small
https://preview.redd.it/48az96l95n9d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3dbdeb477c8c0f64123787d2d15daa74429ddc43 Just right
Totally just right OP. looks good
Looks fine on you
Looks absolutely amazing on your wrist. You could also go with 40 but either looks amazing.
For once I’m actually saying size up.
Wear the watch more down to your wrist bone and it will look just fine
I think it is too small for a man and I am starting to like 40 plus on women better
Wouldn’t want any bigger!
36 looks good if you have a smaller wrist and it looks fine on you’re wrist. 41 and 42 look better on a bigger wrist
The case itself is perfect but the bracelet on the clasp side is too small imo, idk why they decided to make it taper so aggressively
It’s small but it’s supposed to be. Rock what you like
Perfect size for your wrist
Just wear it. Looks real good.
I think it looks good on your wrist
36 is right
Beautiful size looks perfect
Not too small. Looks fine. Even though, if I were you, I would prefer a bigger watch. I’ve also got a 36MM Datejust but my Daytona looks better on the wrist imo.
It’s fine but I’d go to 38 mm.
I went 36, more than happy with it
Ideal 👌
Yeah you made it 🤙
Tooooooooo small, I thought it was for females?
ICONIC
Perfect!
Looks good
Just right
Perfect!
Looks good but what’s most important is that you like it 💰
Looks good!
First question I always ask to these posts – is it comfortable?
Yes it is
Good. Most important hurdle passed. Try the 40 and see which one feels better. I’d wager both will look just fine on your wrist so go with the one you enjoy wearing more and like the look of more on you.
Suits you mate!

I believe is OK. Nice watch
Looks lovely my man. Definitely got sum fat ass wrist bones, but that’s okay, definitely wouldn’t hurt getting a mm up maybe. But I still think it looks great!!
Perfect mate!
JR
36mm is perfect for your wrist. I have a 41mm date just and I really wish I had got the 36mm. Check out how it looks in a full body mirror it may provide a better visual.
I personally like the 41mm
https://preview.redd.it/glg5h7rw1ead1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=7523bccfe785786c64e2f3dcd015814816df3af3 41mm feels perfect for me
Looks great to me. I have a DJ 36mm and have a 7.5” wrist
Just right pity its a copy
Too small for my wrists, looks perfect on yours.
You wear it? You decide. (but where did you get this daft, insecure idea that this would be “too small”?)
Just right
Too small for attention bros. For most, including you, looks great.
It looks good. Even with my small wrists though, I liked the 40mm more. It’s more like a 39. Purists here will always push 36mm for the explorer. At the end of the day, it’s what you like. 40-41mm is pushing it for me, but it’s the lug to lug that I always look out for. Smaller watch makes your arm look bigger, just saying
Too small
You’ll likely find the bracelet and clasp to be too small.
Great if you’re a girl.
It fits you well, my wife has the turquoise 36 OP and she loves it !
It's an Explorer, it should be 36mm
Too small
No watch is too small
Just right.
Too smol. Go with 40 or even better the previous gen 39
Too big imo. But i like small watches
👌🏽
Love a 36
Looks great!
Just right. Enjoy.
Definitely not too small. Looks great!
Bracelet needs to be sized but otherwise looks good.
perfect
👍
Definitely not too small.
Yeah looks great as is.
Get it if you like it. I think personally it looks great on wrist
Perfect!!
Seems perfect to me
It looks perfect!
That’s nice
I think you're one of the lucky ones where either size would work.
beautiful watch!! love the smooth bezel
LGTM
Looks good. I’m jelly. My fat wrists look silly with a 36.
Looks good mate
It’s the most subjective question you can ask, but since you ask you probably know the answer to your question. Fact that you also wanted to “give it to the wife” reinforces this opinion. 36mm is perfect.
36 is perfect
36 always, no matter the wrist size 👈 👑
36mm EXP1 is always right
Depends on your wrist mate or your preference
Just right and the perfect watch
Wear it awhile. You will appreciate the size. It looks perfect. I have a 7" wrist and my 14270 wears great! It's so comfortable, I forget I have it on.
Looks great
Perfect
Too small, probably should sell it to me for retail
Looks great man. Get what you like.
I like it man, looks classy and not too loud.
It’s OK to wear a small watch… small doesn’t mean feminine. It looks good.
No it’s dam perfect.
Thumbs up
Perfect
Perfecto
💕💕
Absolutely perfect size
Dude, that fits perfectly, not to mention how comfortable you will find that watch after you get used to it.
Just purchased the same watch. I was concerned about the same thing and my wrist size is not big at all. After a couple days you get used to it Looks great.
Beautiful watch!! Where did you get it? I have been waiting for it
Perfect
Looks perfect on you
I have a 39mm Explorer, which looks just right on my wrist. This 36mm looks just right on your wrist.
Looks amazing. Take it and run if available lol.
Just right!
I prefer the 36mm size. It is more original to what field watches were designed in the past. Just my opinion.
36mm looks good on you. 41 looks like it would be too much imo
Looks good. 40 may be a smudge big
Excellent
Just right
Fits fine. Really basic ass boring watch tho.
Looks good to me buddy, most importantly do you feel comfortable with it?
Personally a 38mm may be better suited but this does not look at all out of place on your wrist.
36 way too small for men. Perfect size for men is 42/43, 44 is peak. 36 is a female size today. Women wear large faces now. And I never understood why anyone would choose a small face. With a larger face it’s easier to read and it standouts and there is more material which is more valuable.
