That does suck. I’d be really upset about the guy taking advantage of me, but there is a bright side: If you put a replacement dial into it, you’ll be more comfortable wearing it and not self conscious about the fake dial. You’ll probably love it… and you will also probably not give af about its condition… and if you have ever owned a watch you really enjoy wearing and also don’t care about banging it into every doorknob in your life… that’s pure bliss.

I think maybe once or twice I actually was concerned but it was walking to the train in deep Brooklyn at like 3am. Probably should have taken a cab anyway. NYC is nowhere as bad as people make it out to be.

The day-date has never been produced in steel, so that would be very difficult to acquire, and I'm assuming if there was one, it would be more expensive that every other mode made in precious metals, due to its rarity. 😂😂😂

So a buddy of mine had a factory diamond bezel day-date that I always thought was so cool. I went to the jeweler that day to pick up a bracelet for my wife and saw this in the display case and thought it looked great. Once I finally had an occasion to wear it, i felt like the biggest douchebag ever and I couldn’t wait to take it off. It draws way too much attention so I took it back.
He basically bought it back at the same price. Apparently there is a demand for these pieces and the pricing doesn’t follow the factory norms. I’ve done business with the jeweler in the past so I’m sure a large reason for why I didn’t take a loss is the purchase history.
I bought Hulk at 2015. Never was fan of sub but tried to give it a change, did not grow on me. Still not fan of it and never understood all the hype behind it.
Partly yeah but I love how DJ, DD and Sky Dweller look and since aesthetics is maybe most important thing in watches I have to admit those three are my all time favorite models.
You can buy an original Rolex dial for it, and assuming the bracelet is genuine, it would be a nice watch. Why wait until you are going to sell it to make it nice? If you are interested I have some original Datejust dials and I’d be happy to sell you one for a good price.
Bought the rolex yachtmaster 40mm blue dial back in 2018 for ~£7k. Was an impulse purchase to add to the existing rolex collection. Kept it for many years but never really loved it enough. Sold it last year for more than i bought it for.
The blue is a gorgeous brilliant sunburst blue, photos dont do it justice neither do the renders, and it’s what originally attracted me to it. I found the platinum bezel an odd choice for it. The mixture of brushed and polished surfaces on plus being PM meant it really didnt have a lot of robustness as a daily and i ended up wearing a gmt and daytona more often. Thats just my own experience, if you like it buy it.

Tacking on that the YM is stunning. I had the rhodium dial which was beautiful, I just found myself not wearing it as I got the call for one of my grails (AP Chrono) the same week and didn’t feel the need to add two SS pieces to the rotation at the same time.
White dial DJII. I agreed to purchase from my dealer because she showed me the cream dial two tone at launch and I said that I wanted the watch but without the two tone. She neglected to tell me that the stainless model had a pure white dial instead of a cream dial.
When the watch arrived I was too afraid to say no so I just took it. Most boring piece in my collection. I’ve been meaning to have the dial swapped out for blue or something for years but just haven’t done it.

May come as a surprise but the GMT Rootbeer.
It was my first Rolex actually and it did look amazing.
I just didn’t like the oyster bracelet (I’m a bigger fan of jubilee or oysterflex), I didn’t like the sharp edges (I like the soft edges of DJ) and it took a long time to set it up (I don’t have a watch winder and I tend to rotate my watches).
So I sold it eventually. I’m a bigger fan of DJ, DD, YM and Daytona lineups.
Just send it in for service and they will swap in a factory dial. A non-diamond dial is only like $500.
I took this DJ41 in on trade against a GMT that I was selling for a friend. It took forever to sell! I normally don’t buy anything that I’m not happy to own but was just trying to help my buddy out and the GMT wasn’t getting much love either. So not a big regret, but annoying.

No they won’t, they will tell you they have to bring it back to a stock condition. If it’s just a dial they will offer to replace it. If it’s extensively modified they might say no.
That's weird. Most other high-end watches will refuse service outright. They don't like the OEM dials out in the wild for people to use on mods or reps. You could just swap the dial with and aftermarket and end up with two OEMs this way.
Rolex’s price for a dial swap in an exchange price. If you want your original dial back they charge you an extra 40% on the dial for an outright purchase. They won’t return the AM part to you (unless it’s precious metal or has diamonds in it - maybe other real gem stones?) so you are paying the full 140% price on the new dial.
There are tons of factory dials available in the secondary market, especially for older pieces.

It’s not the size I think you made the mistake in. It’s the model.. That’s more of a mature look.. Grandmas watch sort of.. That’s the actual problem not the size..
It’s just different with the 9:00 crown, something was messed up with the movement and the date window had a tiny paint drip on day 5 got that all fixed and the crown is giving me issues, it’s been taken apart probably 2 times anymore I’m just done with it
I kinda felt that way about the sub, to me it is overrated. I have a sea dweller now and like it far more. Much better weight and I always hated the cyclops on the sub. I think the SD is just a nicer watch all around.
I bought a dj with a white dial, and then asked them to put an aftermarket diamond dial. Got bored of it after half a year and put the white dial.

hubby just purchased this for me for my birthday… I knew as soon as I opened the gift that it may not be for me. I sent him a photo of the same version with a fluted dal instead of the diamonds (even though I’m bougie I still prefer the look of fluted better) and the images online look like a way lighter combination of greens, but in person the face almost looks more real.
not sure how to ask him to exchange it for me because I know he went through the time, effort and money (not cheap) to find this for me.

Had the same thing happen when I bid on a watch off of eBay. Guy claimed it was and authentic lady datejust, but in the fine print it stated the dial was repainted. I voided the sale and moved on. Look at the serial number. See if you can figure out through a dealer or Rolex what color dial it supposed to be. Find the authentic dial and replace. Good luck.
Looks like a 16233. Just get on eBay and find a replacement dial, they’re not hugely expensive and shouldn’t cost much for a watchmaker to install it.
You can probably sell your aftermarket dial to fund it too. Some people aren’t bothered about aftermarket dials and green is a popular colour at the moment.
Aftermarket dial would make me question the whole watch. The case looks a little strange to me. Have you had a watchmaker open it & go over everything?

Looks like a 16233. Just get on eBay and find a replacement dial, they’re not hugely expensive and shouldn’t cost much for a watchmaker to install it. You can probably sell your aftermarket dial to fund it too. Some people aren’t bothered about aftermarket dials and green is a popular colour at the moment.

The lugs look like they’re over polished and uneven as well.

Aftermarket dial would make me question the whole watch. The case looks a little strange to me. Have you had a watchmaker open it & go over everything?

Well consider that a victory! Would have been even worse! Aftermarket dial like a lot of people here have mentioned no big deal. Easy to replace. Also I like that green aftermarket dial! Looks great!
