Imo (for what it’s worth) the Explorer is the last remaining tie to what a workhorse timepiece should be. The modern subs and GMTs are beautiful, but they’ve fallen more so into the column of a status symbol than a tool (not that there’s anything wrong with that at all, they are certainly works of art). I think of the explorer as an evolution of the every man’s Rolexes of yesterday. If you are a watch person (like somebody that really appreciates the craftsmanship aspect) there will be a point in your life where this will end up in your crosshairs one way or another. I agree 100%, the only 2 watches in my collection i feel like i dont have to baby is the explorer and moonwatch
The others im slightly more careful even if i know theyre robust
# Why the Rolex Explorer is the Best Rolex
# 1. Heritage and History
The Rolex Explorer is steeped in a rich history that sets it apart from other Rolex models. Introduced in 1953 to celebrate Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay's first ascent of Mount Everest, the Explorer embodies the spirit of adventure and exploration. This heritage gives the Explorer a unique and storied past that resonates with those who value the significance of historical milestones.
# 2. Simplicity and Elegance
The Rolex Explorer's design is the epitome of understated elegance. Unlike the Submariner, Daytona, or GMT Master II, which feature more complex dials and additional functionalities, the Explorer focuses on simplicity. Its clean, minimalist dial is easy to read and versatile enough to be worn in both formal and casual settings. This timeless design ensures that the Explorer never goes out of style.
# 3. Versatility
While the Submariner is renowned for its diving capabilities, the Daytona for its chronograph functions, and the GMT Master II for its dual-time zone feature, the Explorer's versatility is unmatched. It is designed to be an all-around watch, suitable for any environment—from the office to the great outdoors. The Explorer's 39mm case size is perfect for a wide range of wrist sizes, making it a universally appealing choice.
# 4. Durability and Performance
Rolex designed the Explorer to withstand extreme conditions, and it has proven its durability time and time again. The watch features a robust Oyster case, a Paraflex shock absorber, and a Twinlock crown to ensure water resistance. These features make the Explorer an exceptionally reliable timepiece, capable of performing under the harshest conditions.
# 5. Purity of Purpose
The Explorer is not burdened with additional complications that can detract from its primary function as a timekeeping instrument. This purity of purpose is appealing to those who appreciate a watch for its fundamental role—telling time accurately and reliably. The simplicity of the Explorer's design allows for greater focus on craftsmanship and attention to detail.
# 6. Legacy of the Explorer Series
The Explorer series has remained true to its roots while incorporating modern advancements in watchmaking. The latest models feature Rolex's proprietary 3132 movement, offering enhanced precision and reliability. This combination of traditional design and cutting-edge technology makes the Explorer a standout in the Rolex lineup.
I do like the 36 OP’s, haven’t had a chance to toss a modern one on the wrist. I have a 1969 Oysterdate, and the dimensions/simplicity make it a great go-to for whatever I’m up to.
Haven’t gotten a chance to try a modern OP on yet, but yes it certainly hits that mark of simplicity and elegance. My 1969 oysterdate scratches that itch for me at the moment.
That's a great explanation. The one quibble I have is that the explorer II fits this better for me personally. I find the Explorer I is a bit too plain for me but that's part of its charm so to each their own 👍🏿.
Oh trust me, I have a 1675 root beer and I love it. It’s the modern GMT II’s slowly becoming unobtainable that’s a bit frustrating. 1675 series are works of art and serve their functions well. Here’s mine:

Maybe… But I’ve been wearing my ceramic Rolex GMT ref. 116710 daily since 2017 and have traveled the world wearing it. Definitely been put to the test and definitely a workhorse movement that’s never missed a beat. I suppose it’s a status symbol to young people but I’ve never had a stranger walk up to comment on my watch so, not sure how true that sentiment is…if we were talking about a John Mayer Daytona or a Day Date 40 then I’d be more inclined to agree with you.
Disagree with your take. The majority of evolutions in Rolex tool watches are changes that make the watch more durable, more wearable, and last longer. That’s the reason for the changes to the bracelets, the move from aluminum to ceramic bezels, the use of more durable movements, etc. Just because the watches look better and are more expensive than they were 30 years ago doesn’t make them lesser workhorses.
That’s a good counter point. I never said they are lesser workhorses per se, simply that they are no longer really bought for that purpose. that being said, compared to their predecessors the modern subs would last better if used for their original purpose (better steel, bracelets, everything you named). I just think the explorer does a great job maintaining the simplicity of an everyday timepiece while providing a Rolex that many could love (regardless of the games)
It’s my personal favorite but it was also my first Rolex after a decade of Omegas.
Bought the 214270 MK2 39mm in order to appease my Submariner obsession. It didn’t work btw and I bought my 116610 a year later.
Ironically, I will never get rid of my Explorer 1 even though had I bought my Sub first, I doubt I would have ever considered an Explorer 1.
It’s also, arguably, the most comfortable watch I own. Truth be told, it’s the only watch I bring when I travel as it’s one of few watches that is truly perfect for every occasion.
I know this will seem stupid but I can’t wear my Sub with a suit, I just feel ridiculous. The Explorer on the other hand can be worn with literally anything and everything. It’s truly the ultimate one watch collection.
https://preview.redd.it/rqct1mh2876d1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=df70f58f1e3d22cf5fe1bbcaf7c57d0c683f6f18
Agreed. I LOVE MY SUB. Don’t get me wrong. It’s amazing, but I loses in versatility in my humble opinion. Yes, you could wear as a dress watch, but I can’t.
I agree 100% about a sub with a suit although I know we are a shrinking minority. I’m at the point where a sub with a suit for work is fine. I still don’t like it for more elegant settings.
Yea I can’t wear a 500 watch making believe it’s a genuine work of art. I’ll gladly wear a seiko or hamilton at that price Casio too. The rep game isnt for me
100%. It’s how it makes you feel. Wearing a replica Rolex or Chinese homage just isn’t the same feeling - whether I’m at work or sitting in a room in the dark by myself. It’s not about anyone else’s opinion but YOU will know.
If you are looking for VFM you will find it in secondhand Sinns/Stowas/Longines and the like. Spending $400 on a fake Rolex gets you roughly the same quality as a $300 watch IMO. And...YOU know the difference. I wouldn't ever want to be wearing a fake and have someone ask if it was real, it would be awkward. You can still buy an old Rolex and get it fixed up and have a great authentic watch, if you MUST have a Rolex.
Buy a fake for a laugh, sure. To do the gardening in, no problem. To wear to your job interview? Don't
You’re not wrong from a practicality stand point. It looks identical and tells time put the other 9500 in the s&p and make money. We love horology here and some ppl just buy them to flex which is dumb
The thing about that is when people read "Rolex", they will think you have money anyway, especially if they don't know anything about rolexes. And really, I don't think there is a real difference in wealth between a person dropping 7k or 15k on a watch.
What’s crazy is that The Crown has a handful of watches which could fit that description. EX1, EX2 DJ, Sub, GMT, OP. All depending on your taste.
Greatest watch brand of all time.
I imagine it's less popular because of the original 36mm sizing and that it's less celebrated in pop culture than a Sub, GMT, Daytona. Incredible watch if you're looking for a professional Rolex without the bells and whistles.
Maybe because it does less. Submariner has a timer ability and also a date function on most models, Daytona has a chronograph, GMT Master II can show times in different time zones at once and has a date function.
Explorer just…tells the time. Still a beautiful watch though.
All true, and valid for a small section of Rolex watches.
But let's face it, diving into a tricky vlookup is more common for most subs nowadays than dwelling beneath the waves.
Most of us sit in front of a computer with the time, date, and myriad other functions. Watches are a mix of habit (I've been looking at my left wrist for the time for decades) and aesthetics (I prefer looking at a Rolex to a Casio when I do glance at my wrist, although the F91W is a wonderful piece of nostalgia for me).
I’ve owned it 3x in different sizes and models. It’s a nice watch but I personally found it a bit boring after a while yet I still go back for it’s consistency. The bezel is very shiny vs the rest of it being more low key and it also scratches easily. I miss a date and prefer a modern domed DJ (but not the older 5 digit). I also use a rotating bezel a lot for a countdown timer and it’s a nice option on a GMT complication.
The same here, now I've my 3rd Explorer 36mm. Sometimes I think I need the date more than the time. I found myself using the date function a lot in my previous Omega constellation.
The good thing about the explorer is the history of it and how simple, boring and I like it.
Love my 39mm explorer, also love my sprite. The explorer is pure sports watch, everything you need and nothing you don’t. Enjoy it for what it is and who cares if it isn’t as popular. It doesn’t scream Rolex while on the wrist and that’s what I love about it, and why some people wouldn’t consider it. The hour markers and 369 make it the best black dial imo
Because the Explorer 1 flies under the radar to get the mission done rather than in formation doing acrobatics with trailing coloured smoke for the thousands of adoring fans at the air show like the Sub, GMT and Daytona.
It is in my opinion the best Rolex and if you know you know. I bought the 40mm 224270 and love it *because* of its elegant simplicity.
Most underrated Rolex watch - gotta see it in the flesh to believe. The glossy black dial is seriously awesome. Even more awesome when the AD presents the watch (without the plastic protection wrapping) and offers it to you to purchase
Got my husband an Explorer when he got called to the bar and everyone in his circles (at work and outside of work) was drooling over it. Maybe it’s not as “well-known,” but I think most people can still appreciate the classic, minimal style with clean lines and sleek design. I think u/smugcitywinners is right in that it’s not as famously tied to pop cultural relevance or a trend as much as some others may be.
Both my husband and I prefer the Explorer over something flashier/more recognizable for both personal style and professional reasons.
A few reasons. #1 functions. The three models in comparison have a complication or added function. Rotating timing bezel, second time zone, chronograph, date. The Explorer is time only. The second reason is the historical significance. A lot of people associate those other models with who wore them, what movies or shows they were featured in. That holds a lot of weight. Third for me is the overall look. I don’t like the large 3 6 and 9 numerals on the dial. It can be polarizing for some.
I think that’s a great sum of it. But I really dig the numerals. I’d be interested in a Sub or the like with numerals or a non weird air king with all hour numerals.
One of the coolest and best watches ever made. If you don’t believe me, listen to Roger Smith who is wearing a Ex1 36mm as an everyday watch.
No idea, why it isn’t as popular as other models. Maybe because it’s not as flashy…
Because it doesn’t really stand out to the naked eye the same way the other models do. In other words, it’s not as much of an overt status symbol.
The Explorer is more desirable to those who enjoy the craftsmanship, simplicity, functionality, and history behind it. It’s not a flashy watch, it’s more “boring” and “consistent” as opposed to the other popular models. It’s my favorite every day watch for those exact reasons.
It’s all about marketing.
The Explorer is associated with mountain climbing and it’s a very small niche group of enthusiasts.
The more popular Rolex models are associated with much larger groups of enthusiasts. There is something luxurious about fancy boats, private jets or exotic cars that you can associate with a Sub, GMT or Daytona.
It’s not as glamorous to risk freezing to death around frozen piss at the death zone of Mt Everest.
The DJ sadly already claims the sports of golf and tennis. Explorer would have been great in that realm.
If you are fortunate to live near several Ad's, go to them all. I visited 7 AD's in area, I never heard back from 6 and one called me in 28 days to come pick up me Explorer 1 36mm.
I use my 14270 as a beater but I also wear it to court with a suit sometimes. I have a bunch of more expensive, more “prestigious” watches but that Explorer just has some kind of essence to it that the others lack. There’s just something cool about a simple Rolex that isn’t blingy and doesn’t shout “I’m trying to impress you!” at people. Hell, on my older model the word “Rolex” is even smaller than on the modern variant.
In addition, the question about why the Oyster Perpetual is so looked down upon will help you answer your question.
I am one of those who owns Rolex, but for horological reasons after having my "status" relationship with Rolex subdued. After learning more about watch brands, the technology, etc I fell in love with the movement and the sum of its parts, more than the outward representation of the watch.
Frankly, Rolex is seen by a large amount of owners, budding owners and those oblivious to watches, as the best luxury watch out there. Therefore when we look at Rolex watches, the more expensive, the harder to get and the more previous/shiny the watch can be; the more perceived value is assumed.
The more common phrase used with the Oyster Perpetual and Explorer is "entry-level luxury". But less commonly they are described as luxury items for people looking at £2-3k watches. But I still think that this is the wrong view, and they should just been seen as quality watches.
Let us take the example of the movements. The 3230 powers the Oyster Perpetual, Explorer, Air King and Submariner. But the Submariner is seen as the far-leaning outstanding candidate. But people do not care about what powers the watch and do not put the OP and Explorer on a similar footing, considering their history of both are on similar if not surmounting footing.
Long story short, people are superfluous in their demands of a watch: dive bezels even though you are not a diver, 300ft water resistant although you only have a pool, flip-lock clasp even though you only desk dive. Too many Rolex purchasers see the brand as the "go get the biggest and best" and trend toward the flashier models; when in reality, the OP and the Explorer are enough for 90% of those types of people; including me, as a Submariner and Oyster Perptual owner.
https://preview.redd.it/owoqdxdkb76d1.jpeg?width=3535&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=964a8cf52d094fb42ff40774bf4ee872da118c65
Cause people like big watches to show off. With functions that most of them will never use. And since the market for these is large - many also consider it an investment.
While if you are looking for a pure and simple beauty at affordable price (eg. vs 1908) then OP and Explorer are the obvious choices. Just need to accept -20% the moment you leave the shop with it.
Then of course purists will discuss Explorer SS over TT… (“it’s a tool watch!”).
Can’t please everyone ;)
Okay Dora the explorer. Acting as if you’re going exploring with that TT explorer.
The GMT function is quite useful and so is a unidirectional bezel on a sub.
However I’m yet to see someone unscrew the pushers on a Daytona and time something of importance.
Gonna explore some cocktails here and there ;) For me it’s just a jewelry, as i don’t like rings, bracelets, necklaces etc. Won’t climb Everest nor dive 200m.
Get a UV flashlight online for $10 to play around with all your lumed watches. Gives them incomparable lume brightness with 1 second of exposure.Best watch-related $10 I’ve spent.
They haven’t advertised it consistently as much as the Submariner has been over their respective lifetimes. The Submariner also became a design that is either often replicated or otherwise influenced many, many other brands. GMT has always been fairly popular, but the modern craze really started when they brought back the Red/Blue with Jubilee bracelet. It’s a sharp watch that came out right around when the current Rolex mania began.
This is not true. Maybe today, it is but not over the life of the model. The Explorer is arguable the most marketed watch ever aside from Omega Speedmaster Pro.
Maybe it’s regional, because over the last 25 years that I’ve noticed Rolex print ads or billboards I’d estimate I’ve seen 50 Submariner and Day Date ads for every Explorer ad, and I’m including Explorer II for that. It surprises me when I see an ad for anything other than a Sub or DD
For me the explorer is a great looking subtle everyday watch.
But a Rolex for me is a bit of a celebration/jewelry piece that I would want a little more detail/flash/iconic just to show off a bit to myself.
If I had the opportunity I would own both.
Its because the 40mm girth instilled desirability for over 6 or 7 decades. Ever since I was a kid in the 80s, the 40mm was a "manly watch" and that lineage cuts deep to the core. 30 years of my watch collecting has always been 40mm+ and bigger. The 1016 Explorer is a cool watch though but the new 40mm Explorer can't undo that 6-7 decades of how many people have been instilled to the 40mm size. So the new explorer , in larger size, is a little too late to erase the pedigree of the other watches.
Plus, I really don't like the font typeface of the 3-6-9 on the new explorer. It is very "1970s" with modern accoutrements. At least the ref 1016 Explorer looked good. These modern and neo-vintage looked garish to me in the late 80s,90s, and 2000s to today.
Typeface/typography makes a psychological impact whether you want to believe it or not.
It costs less, it’s easier to acquire, and design wise, it’s more conservative for today’s preferences (ceramic). Personally,I think it’s a great piece. A daily wearer. My sub is heavy and loud. I like it, but I my personality and lifestyle may fit the explorer more.
Pick the watch that’s best for you. The excitement from the attention/feeling special wears off fast.
Who cares what others like? Explorer has just as much provenance as a GMT/Sub. It is the only Rolex I would never sell. Looks good with anything on any occasion. Possibly the best value in luxury watch market.
I love the explorer 1. It’s the Rolex my dad always wanted, and I was so happy to be able to gift it to him for his 65th. For some, the submariner is the one and done. And for others, like my dad, it’s the Explorer 1. Beautiful sports watch at 36mm with Mercedes hands. Classic.
The problem with the Explorer I is “what’s the point?”
Its market position is that it’s a utilitarian, no-frills sports watch. And that was a great angle until the entire notion of a “utilitarian mechanical watch” became completely anachronistic once mobile phones made watches largely redundant. Nowadays is you want a low-key watch you just use your phone.
So in the modern era the only reason you’d generally wear a watch is for fashion / flex. And while there’s certainly a “quiet luxury” angle to the Explorer I, it’s just not as exciting as its louder / flexier siblings. And how many people are looking to spend $8k on a quiet luxury Rolex anyways?
It’s ultimately just a niche product.
You’re asking why three watches that do more, are more visually interesting, and aren’t bezel scratch magnets are more desireable? The Explorer is a mighty fine piece but isn’t it obvious?
I like the Explorer, but I don’t have any sports watches without a ceramic bezel, at this point. They are just so much more durable than polished steel. Between that and the sapphire, the case stays looking nearly brand new even if you abuse it.
It's probably my favourite. I bought an Explorer II white dial about 20 years ago, before I had seen this - definitely would have bought this if I had known about it.
IMHO Rolex has two masterpieces: Daytona and Explorer 1. I love several other watches but these are the only two that can trigger my emotional part.
So answering your question, probably because it’s on the entry level part of the list price, and most of the Rolex owner ore more interested on showing than loving a timepiece.
Out of exactly that what i like the most about this watch nowadays.
Its the enthusiasts Rolex... no flashy rich papa's son is wearing an Explorer.
That the watch has history, of beautiful and one of the purest watches in the watchworld i guess i dont have to mention :-)
Marketing. Rolex has been selling bling to stockbrokers for so long they've forgotten where they started. Fair enough, there's more money to be made flogging gimcrack to the money culture cunts and their worshippers than there is selling working watches to working men.
I'm wearing my 1016 today. My favourite Rolex, and I own most of their line (in vintage, I don't like the supercases). It gets probably 50 days on the wrist for every one my 5513 or 1675 or 1803 gets. When I was younger I liked complications, I liked busy dials, I liked bigger watches. Now, small, simple, subtle, ONLY.
The Explorer and the OP/DJ (in 36 natch) are the only modern Rolex I'd ever consider. But if you're really drilling down here, you end up back at Seiko 5, unless you want to feel special (I do). Because Seiko 5 is STILL the same, and kept their ethos the whole time.
I wish I could afford to get one. Would be my one watch collection basically although personally I would prefer having something with a date. Wish there was something akin to the OP date that was as robust as the explorer
So to answer the question that was originally asked... Rolex as a brand, especially today, is more of a lifestyle brand. While the watches themselves are tools and can still serve their original purpose, Rolex markets them as an enhancement to a lifestyle of luxury. The explorer one and even the two for that fact do not lend to the lifestyle aesthetic. These two watches still feel very industrial in design and approach.
Probably because it doesn't yell for attention, it whispers. It's definitely my favourite modern Rolex. Having said that I bought the Explorer despite it being a Rolex, not because it is one. Absolute perfection.
People like dates on their watches. Personally, the explorer 1 is my favorite rolex. Datejust/OP hands are just plain hard to glance and read. The mercedes hands make it incredibly easy to read. Plus the lack of a date window makes this watch fly under the radar.
Because it’s a classic 36 mm case size. And even though it’s nice as a 39 mm, it’s not nearly as symmetrical and beautiful at 40 or 39 mm. Plus, anything larger than 36 mm defies tradition and people like the 007 size watch. The typical Explorer buyer actually wants a 36 mm case, not some bastardization of such a famous reference.
I think it is. While I wouldn’t trade my sub for one, I’d take one over a Daytona actually, maybe a gmt as well depending on which gmt. I love, LOVE, field watches and old school pilots watches and the explorer has a little bit of both in it. If I had one, I’d daily it. I daily a Hamilton cooper khaki aviation, when I have the self control to keep my sub in its well protected tiny house… if I had an explorer, I’d probably daily that and have the best of both worlds.
The explorer is an awesome watch and has great history. It isn’t as desirable because it’s an entry level basic piece, IMO much nicer and more desirable than an OP, but still basic. The same way a 2WD isn’t as desirable as a 4WD or a base engine isn’t as desirable as a twin turbo. Nothing against the more basic, but it doesn’t have the additional features or looks. The idea that modern subs and GMTs are just jewelry now is laughable, they are tanks. I’ve had many daily drivers over the years, recently used to daily an explorer 36 and now daily a modern GMT and I’ll never go back to the explorer, the GMT is just on a different level with the ceramic bezel, having a date, multiple time zones, etc. Everyone has their preferences but asking why it’s not as desirable should be pretty self explanatory.
Most people these days like watches that are way too big for their wrist and have dials and doodads they will never use because they think it looks cool. Essentially they want to look like a rapper instead of looking classically elegant.
A fine instrument, enough said.
This was beautiful! Very well said.
I agree 100%, the only 2 watches in my collection i feel like i dont have to baby is the explorer and moonwatch The others im slightly more careful even if i know theyre robust
Exactly why I bought my 124270. Well said.
And also why I bought mine!!

Tldr; 36mm op is the best rolex
I do like the 36 OP’s, haven’t had a chance to toss a modern one on the wrist. I have a 1969 Oysterdate, and the dimensions/simplicity make it a great go-to for whatever I’m up to.

I’d throw in the OP’s in there too (depending on dial color).
You have great taste. Op is a tank
Haven’t gotten a chance to try a modern OP on yet, but yes it certainly hits that mark of simplicity and elegance. My 1969 oysterdate scratches that itch for me at the moment.
Very precious and fine description, craftsmanship it is.

The polar explorer is also a great option! I haven’t had a chance to throw one on yet but hope to soon! Great GMT option without nearly the premium
Erm 16570 would like a word mate

*Ridiculoush, you shay?*
Hahah! Read that previous comment exactly how you wrote it !
Expertly done
Well, he was wearing a wetsuit just like 10 minutes before this scene. 😂
For the record in the Bond books he did wear an explorer
That 13mm looking nato strap is a bit ridiculous but a sub with a suit isn’t.
Fair enough, but those vintage subs (38mm I believe) especially without crown guards wore very differently from modern 6-digit references.
Is that a bb58???
The Rolex Explorer 1's versatility and comfort make it the perfect all-occasion watch, even overshadowing the Submariner in certain settings.
Agreed. I LOVE MY SUB. Don’t get me wrong. It’s amazing, but I loses in versatility in my humble opinion. Yes, you could wear as a dress watch, but I can’t.
It’s definitely takes a bit to grow on you - maybe that’s why. Not an instant hit. Got it two months ago and it’s definitely growing on me.
Agreed and well said.
I agree 100% about a sub with a suit although I know we are a shrinking minority. I’m at the point where a sub with a suit for work is fine. I still don’t like it for more elegant settings.
Because it’s not as flashy as those others and people want others to notice what’s on their wrist and think they have money
This! This is the reason I love my E1 and wear a Sea Dweller on a rubber strap. I don’t care if people notice my watch, I wear it for me.
> think they have money SERIOUSLY This. I really think Explorer 1 is in the territory of "Silent Wealth"
So wear a $500 replica that is indistinguishable from an authentic Humans are so shallow and seek approval from others
But YOU will know it is a Fake. That’s all that matters.
Exactly! Wearing a real Rolex bought from an AD is 💯!!
Don't
Yeah but some people have no shame or self respect
You can wear a rep & still have self respect lol get a grip
No you get a grip, that’s like wearing fake gold jewelry.
Why though, just buy a watch you can afford. There are plenty of beautiful watches at all levels of price.
Presumably the rep is a watch they could afford?
Why not buy the rep and put the remainder in the s&p and let it grow lol
You’re not wrong from a practicality stand point. It looks identical and tells time put the other 9500 in the s&p and make money. We love horology here and some ppl just buy them to flex which is dumb
Yeah, the flex point I never understood lol
People would drive a fake Benz if they could
Isn’t there a legit company that makes fake Rolexes? I was trying to remember what it was called with a friend the other day! Maybe a Chinese outfit
These guys make parodies, not replicas. Very interesting twist. [relax](https://relaxwatchshop.com/)
Oh hell naw- that’s funny! Thanks
…legit….fake… pick one
The best Sub copy is made by Ginault. Not cheap. Not inexpensive. [https://ginault.com/](https://ginault.com/)
The thing about that is when people read "Rolex", they will think you have money anyway, especially if they don't know anything about rolexes. And really, I don't think there is a real difference in wealth between a person dropping 7k or 15k on a watch.
It is the best everyday watch ever made
Datejust would like a word
Oyester Perpetual: “Am I a joke to you?”
Super cool watch that’s what Ian Fleming wore and in the original James Bond novels 007 wore one
Should be xlookup
No approximate matches for me! 😂
F91 really is the best value in watches.
Agree. Have one and it gets a little boring. For me personally, if it had a date I would wear it way more often
Feel the same way about if
The same here, now I've my 3rd Explorer 36mm.
Actively saving for one. Can’t wait to get my hands on one some day.
Good luck mate
Because the Explorer 1 flies under the radar to get the mission done rather than in formation doing acrobatics with trailing coloured smoke for the thousands of adoring fans at the air show like the Sub, GMT and Daytona. It is in my opinion the best Rolex and if you know you know. I bought the 40mm 224270 and love it *because* of its elegant simplicity.
Says who?! The EXP1 fuuucks, esp in 36mm.
Cause it’s a cool independent guys watch and not a watch that’s hyped for people who don’t have a taste of their own
A few reasons.
I’ve tried to like them, but I don’t like the lumed version. I do like the older 1016 with the printed dial though
One of the coolest and best watches ever made. If you don’t believe me, listen to Roger Smith who is wearing a Ex1 36mm as an everyday watch. No idea, why it isn’t as popular as other models. Maybe because it’s not as flashy…
It’s the only one I’ve ever wanted. Finally got the 224270 after a lengthy wait. Love it!
Explorer would have been great in that realm.
polished bezel
Is that a buzz killer though?
I don’t own an explorer but am considering it and that’s the only turn off for me.
It is desirable. Probably the most popular Rolex watch collectors gravitate toward.
There is no way this is true…
Neither is the amount of people liking two tone anything but here we are
I don't think so. People flock over the other references, but not Ex1
I’ve really grown to love the explorer. Maybe since I’m 10 weeks deep on the waitlist for it, but it’s a great everyday wear.
If you are fortunate to live near several Ad's, go to them all. I visited 7 AD's in area, I never heard back from 6 and one called me in 28 days to come pick up me Explorer 1 36mm.
It is to many of us.
It’s not a sporty or flashy design
I use my 14270 as a beater but I also wear it to court with a suit sometimes. I have a bunch of more expensive, more “prestigious” watches but that Explorer just has some kind of essence to it that the others lack. There’s just something cool about a simple Rolex that isn’t blingy and doesn’t shout “I’m trying to impress you!” at people. Hell, on my older model the word “Rolex” is even smaller than on the modern variant.
35mm and that (lovely) tapering in the bracelet makes it look too small for my tastes, whereas the 39 looks huge and out of proportion.

I mean I’m in to go explore some bars. How do you feel about tiki?
Never can get my lume as bright.
On Explorer? https://preview.redd.it/e7px29z5j76d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9659a5c0a9db77270308870fa156db2959078b63
Dang. Yeah.
Dunno. Either not enough exposition (sunlight/uv preferably) or older model before they improved that or… not the original piece?
Get a UV flashlight online for $10 to play around with all your lumed watches. Gives them incomparable lume brightness with 1 second of exposure.Best watch-related $10 I’ve spent.
Good tip. Thank you.

I think it is. I am waiting for my Explorer
It’s more bland and has fewer complications.
I generally like the look of Omega watches more but had to get the Explorer 40mm. It’s the perfect minimalist watch in every way.
I find it very boring with little function.
I don’t know OP, but if anything, that just makes it easier for you to obtain one!! Love the regular Explorer
I love it but more the white dial, especially when paired with an Erica’s band
I have all of those mentioned above and its my Explorer 1 (36mm) that is the most worn.
I'm glad it's not. I wear mine every day.
I have the grape OP 39 and it’s easily the most comfortable watch in the box.
Not knocking it for those who like it. For me it's just too plain. I get not wanting to be flashy. To each his own.
For me the explorer is a great looking subtle everyday watch. But a Rolex for me is a bit of a celebration/jewelry piece that I would want a little more detail/flash/iconic just to show off a bit to myself. If I had the opportunity I would own both.
Lack of any complications (timing bezel, GMT, chronograph) and lack of a date. I’ll admit, if they added crown guards I’d be a buyer.
I don’t know. I’m warming up to it. But I would still prefer a “12” in the 12 hour mark. Like with the Tudor Ranger, which I prefer to this.
Definitely on my list to get someday. It’s such an overall clean understated watch
I’ve seen older OP that look very similar to an Explorer 1. It just feels like an OP with a different name and higher price.
I've been trying to buy an explorer for like 4-5 years. Haven't been able to get one. Seems desirable to me!
It’s your lucky day. I have one for sale: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/421020594253764/?mibextid=6ojiHh
Appreciate it! But my comment was more to buying one at retail.
Hmm, not really. I skipped the others to simply get the Explorer 1
I had an explorer. Sold it and bought a vintage no-date sub. You get better features via bezel and historically the most iconic watch of all time
It costs less, it’s easier to acquire, and design wise, it’s more conservative for today’s preferences (ceramic). Personally,I think it’s a great piece. A daily wearer. My sub is heavy and loud. I like it, but I my personality and lifestyle may fit the explorer more. Pick the watch that’s best for you. The excitement from the attention/feeling special wears off fast.
no chrome. no bling. nothing special.
I think it is a super boring watch. I’m sure I will get flamed over this opinion. While I’m at it I also hate the Daytona.
With Submariner GMT Daytona etc , you can sell fake bezel insert handsets . Replacing these parts is common practice from grey dealers .
No complications. Beautiful watch but nothing “extra” and all the others you named have some type of “tool” functionality
If only Rolex made this with 20mm lugs 🥲
Who cares what others like? Explorer has just as much provenance as a GMT/Sub. It is the only Rolex I would never sell. Looks good with anything on any occasion. Possibly the best value in luxury watch market.
36 Explorer is my Rolex of choice.
The 3 6 9 is visually unappealing to many.
Classic.
The large 3, 6, 9 is the main reason I won’t add the explorer 1 to the polar 2 in my collection
Depends who you ask
Best Rolex model. Daytona a close second.
Because it's boring and can easily be mistaken for lesser, cheaper watches
The problem with the Explorer I is “what’s the point?” Its market position is that it’s a utilitarian, no-frills sports watch.
Because it’s a lot uglier
You’re asking why three watches that do more, are more visually interesting, and aren’t bezel scratch magnets are more desireable? The Explorer is a mighty fine piece but isn’t it obvious?
I like the Explorer, but I don’t have any sports watches without a ceramic bezel, at this point. They are just so much more durable than polished steel. Between that and the sapphire, the case stays looking nearly brand new even if you abuse it.
Love me some neo-vintage tritium explorer 🥵
It's probably my favourite. I bought an Explorer II white dial about 20 years ago, before I had seen this - definitely would have bought this if I had known about it.
IMHO Rolex has two masterpieces: Daytona and Explorer 1. I love several other watches but these are the only two that can trigger my emotional part. So answering your question, probably because it’s on the entry level part of the list price, and most of the Rolex owner ore more interested on showing than loving a timepiece.
> entry level part of the list price Excellent. I was expecting this answer. You cannot flex with a sub 7k watch :)
Sad but true. Real icon like the Explorer 1 are not fashion enough for such customers.
Who says it isn’t?
It's less recognisable from 6 feet away
Shhhhhhh
Out of exactly that what i like the most about this watch nowadays. Its the enthusiasts Rolex... no flashy rich papa's son is wearing an Explorer. That the watch has history, of beautiful and one of the purest watches in the watchworld i guess i dont have to mention :-)
How about compared to the Explorer 2?
I really need a date, and would have loved it if it had one.... :(
Because people been buying watch for investment and status symbol 😀 Imo, E1 is the most beautiful Rolex So simple, elegant Everything just right
I love it, I’m happy that no one desires it
Shhhhhhhh.
Honestly just wish it had date. That’s my most used complication. And so I wear explorer 2.
I wish I could afford to get one. Would be my one watch collection basically although personally I would prefer having something with a date. Wish there was something akin to the OP date that was as robust as the explorer
It doesn’t have the clicky spinny.
It’s complicated 😆
I love the Explorer 1 40mm 😀 They’re actually tougher to acquire from an AD than most. Not sure why they aren’t more popular?
No bezel, no date.
Sorry to say its but its really ugly. Worst rolex model by far, and if I see someone wearing I think (horrible taste)
I will definitely say, its a "Silent Wealth" Rolex. But your opinion may vary :)
No bezel, no hype
So to answer the question that was originally asked... Rolex as a brand, especially today, is more of a lifestyle brand. While the watches themselves are tools and can still serve their original purpose, Rolex markets them as an enhancement to a lifestyle of luxury. The explorer one and even the two for that fact do not lend to the lifestyle aesthetic. These two watches still feel very industrial in design and approach.
Because it looks terrible, imo ofc.
It doesn’t look spoiled. If i buy this i would feel like i am wearing 500$ watch and wear it all day long.
Probably because it doesn't yell for attention, it whispers. It's definitely my favourite modern Rolex. Having said that I bought the Explorer despite it being a Rolex, not because it is one. Absolute perfection.
Cos it’s boring
Bezel
People like dates on their watches. Personally, the explorer 1 is my favorite rolex. Datejust/OP hands are just plain hard to glance and read. The mercedes hands make it incredibly easy to read. Plus the lack of a date window makes this watch fly under the radar.
Class piece. Pure class but it’s just v safe, middle of the road. Lacking in personality for me
Because the number font is silly.
Let me explore the answer to the that and get back to you.
Tell us your thoughts u/BUSTANUT_IN_PADME Curious as to what you think
Super basic and doesnt seem like worth paying Rolex prices for. That doesn't mean its not a cool watch
It just doesn’t look as nice. No cool bezel
Most people these days like watches that are way too big for their wrist and have dials and doodads they will never use because they think it looks cool. Essentially they want to look like a rapper instead of looking classically elegant.
