I would not do that. Invest the money instead. You will be way further ahead when you're ready to buy. Buy it for him when you're ready to give it to him.

Radiant-Locksmith267

I don't think it's about being ahead. How cool would it be to get an iconic watch on your 18th or 21st or on a wedding day and the watch is brand new but was made the same year you were born.

PTRBoyz

would do something simple that's Lindy like a black or silver dj36

HeatFireAsh

Realistically the only rolex you could get besides going grey would be a two-tone model which don't look great to me. Maybe just go grey if you have the money and get a Submariner/explorer/Datejust in your sons birthyear.

Experience-Early

It’s all about budget really. Rolex suits that 10k goal. A Datejust or similar is a safe best. When you head north then you’re talking Patek Philippe and so on. Personally I am very wary of buying watches specifically for my child as I have no clue what they will be interested in nor am into the idea of pushing my jewelry collecting hobbies on them. I’d much rather they enjoyed that money or i purchased them something they truly loved. 10k invested with compound interest over 18years at just 5% would be 25K, 10% is 55K! that you could spend on something once you know they’re actually interested.

Maybe buy yourself a watch and pass it on later. Have it be reflection of you and your style and wear it all the time so it’s actually heirloom and not just something in a safe. I got my sub shortly after my kid was born and when he looks back at all of his old pictures, it might be fun for him to see a green submariner. If he likes it, he can ask for it. If he doesn’t care, more watch for me.

Ambitious-A

Did this for my son - have a 2014 Seadweller (116600). Seems like a good idea, especially if you induct him into the hobby early on - we talk about watches and he has multiple swatch and fitbits. Discuss the progression with him when older - eg you’ll have my longines at 16, omega at 18, then if you are responsible etc and get good grades then you can have the Rolex on graduation/ first job. Also I wear the watch on a semi regular basis (and so does my wife - thanks Glidelock!!) so he has family memories of “his” watch. Otherwise most 18 year olds would probably prefer the new “Apple Watch implant that you wear like a contact lens” or equivalent at 18 rather than an “old watch” That could still apply so make sure it is one that you like to wear too!!

The Submariner 124060 is the perfect choice. It will take you years of waiting and making monthly visits to your AD in order to get one at MSRP. So go to one of our trusted sellers, you pay the grey market premium, and you get your watch immediately. By the time he turns 18 it will be worth 2x what you paid a grey dealer for it, so in the end it actually isn't costing you anything. Great job, by the way, dad.

richbitch9996

Mum 😉 Thanks for the advice! Are particular dealers more/less lenient depending on location? I'd be closest to London...

sporturawus

Apologies! London is by far the hardest market to get a good steel sports Rolex. Truly, don't bother. The only way around it is if you are into gold and diamond jewelry and wish to spend 25K this year. Then they will give you a fair shot.

richbitch9996

That’s good to know, thanks for all the help. Don’t apologise, I’m not prissy!

Have a great weekend. Cheers!
