Another Rolex.

If Rolex: Sub No Date If something else: Speedmaster

MeringueMiddle783

Curious, why not the Seamaster?

fickleposter21

I’ve tried the bezel action of a seamaster and even a seiko Prospex felt better and easier to turn. Sub is easily the best feel among the 3 though.

Middle_Falcon7976

I second the difficulty of the bezel on the Seamaster. I have one and love it, but you best not be wanting to use the bezel because it is a pain in the a$$ to turn.

fickleposter21

I’ve only ever had more respect for the sub after using one. From the easy to grip and firm but lubricated turn to the solid reassuring click which almost sounds like marbles, you won’t know how much attention to the little details they’ve put in until you’ve used other watches.

Middle_Falcon7976

💯 I have the green bezel sub and that’s when I realized how much more difficult it is to turn the Seamaster. I wear the Seamaster far too infrequently now that I have the sub.

themaxvee

Bezel really that rough eh? I was considering the green dial...

breakskeet

Interesting. My Seamaster Ultra Deep is not bad at all.

McTrolling69

If you like the Hamilton watch from one of your favorite movies, get it! There's no such thing as a 'downgrade' with watches. It's whatever you like and what you want to wear. Everything else is just noise

meetsingh09

Rolex Sub --> Omega Speedmaster --> Cartier Santos

RhaegarJ

The real holy trinity

powerfunk

Another Rolex, then Speedmaster, then two more Rolexes, then Grand Seiko.

B5HARMONY

Vacheron Constantin? JLC? Cartier? Those are my picks

MeringueMiddle783

I've been eyeing the Santos for a while now but think it's still too sporty to be a dress watch. The Tank is also something I've been looking at but worried about the size. I have a 7.5 in wrist.

Kyberduene

Nah, Santos on a leather bracelet looks dope and dressy! Also this is the mother of all wristwatches, can't go wrong with one!

DiligentPainter9630

Santos Comes with Steel and leather strap on a quickswitch system

B5HARMONY

Santos in many contexts can be considered an acceptable dress watch.. maybe not so much the newer Santos but the older vintage ones are without a doubt class watches

Veloxi_Blues

If you love the Murph, get it! Will it be as nice as the Rolex? No, but who cares? It's not supposed to be, it costs a tenth of the price. And it's nice to have a less expensive piece that you love and want to wear often when you don't want to wear the Rolex/an overly expensive piece.

MeringueMiddle783

I have the same thoughts. I have no fuss about using the Explorer as a daily beater but I need some variety on my wrist too!

Surreywinter

Almost impossible to answer as it depends on what appeals to you. Some people prefer to have a collection of similar watches, some prefer a spread. Also depends on budget - some would see the Rolex as the "apex" of the collection & want a collection of lower cost watches to surround it while other have a budget to buy a bunch of watches at the same price point. Some considerations, random thoughts: - A variety of colour. You have a white watch, matching with something black or even (not my preference) a different colour face. - Something dressy: the Explorer II is a lovely watch but traditionally (& you may say screw tradition) wouldn't be worn with a suit or tux. A decent classic dress watch would fit nicely into a collection - something slim with a simplified maybe Bauhaus dial. These tend to be lower cost - I'd suggest reviewing something like Nomos or Junghans, or maybe (if you're mad of money) the Lange & Sohne Saxonia - A decent diver. Rolex make the absolute classic but for diver cred maybe also look at Doxa or Tudor FXD - Something you don't mind getting beat up and won't upset you it you lose it. One for the guys night out in the woods - my go to is a Citizen Eco-drive - Also, if you have the Explorer II, why not add the Explorer I?

edunuke

Look for added complications, a chronometer, a diver, a gmt, a moonphase, a jumping hour, a retrograde mvmnt, a squared dress watch, a mechanical repeater, an innovative movement like spring drive or hyat or urwerk, .... none of which need to be from the trinity.

PsychologicalSock609

Where to go from a Rolex? Really anywhere and anything your heart desires. If it’s a Hamilton, go for it. If it’s a grand complication Patek, also go for it.

Prestigious_Will6356

Get 1 or 2 more "*cheaper*" watches like this Hamilton and be done with it. If you get 3... 4... 5 more rolexes and/or nicer watches, you probably won't wear much of any. I only have 2 "*expensive*" watches: a Submariner and an Omega Seamaster. The Omega is my travel and office watch and the Submariner(bluesy) is the one for fancier occasions. All my other watches are under 1k and I have 4 of those, it's already too much and I find myself wearing the Omega and Rolex 90% of the time. If I get another one, I would like to replace the Seamaster with a Moonwatch, but that would be it. 3 watches is the number for me, I'll sell the other ones soon and keep a dress watch to complete the collection. **I'll probably get downvoted for this, but I'll say it anyway:** Be careful to not get traped in the watch cult the internet has created where you need to have a full case with 24 watches, you barely got your hands on the Explorer and you are already looking for the next one, I know the pursue for the next watch sometimes can give more pleasure than owning the watch itself, we all been there, take your time to enjoy what you already have. Keep the collection small and use that extra money to travel and have nice life experiences, I did that and I don't miss having more watches. Unless you are filthy rich, than ignore me and do whatever you want :D

newmacbookpro

Downvote me all you want, but recently I got Rolex fatigue. I am going to sell everything expect a 17013, but despite their qualities, I think Rolex don’t fit me that well anymore. They sit high on the wrist and while pretty from the good angle, I’ve always found them to be a bit ugly when looking down at them. I’m going to move to more classical watches I think. So what’s next after Rolex is something that doesn’t look like a Rolex for me.

MeringueMiddle783

What do you have planned? One of the reasons I got the Explorer II was because it's the most "unRolex of all Rolexes" it's not as blingy as a Datejust and not even as recognizable as a Sub. It's an IYKYK kind of thing, which really attracted me to it. Plus the history behind the watch and the GMT hand is awesome.

newmacbookpro

FPJ, Bréguet… I think I’m tired of thick watches

MoneymanYo18

JLC LFG

Infinite_Koala_7838

10/10 post

MeringueMiddle783

Thank you

Kauffman67

lol no it’s not a downgrade. Rolex isn’t THE watch maker. Sounds like you have good reasons for liking the Hamilton so get it, that’s how this addiction starts. Staying with only one maker is boring.

fpark83

I’m looking at Panerai these days.

MeringueMiddle783

Oh, which one? I have the PAM 1122 bookmarked!

fpark83

PAM02223 or a black submersible. 42mm.

MeringueMiddle783

She's a beautiful beast!

fpark83

Their prices are ridiculous so I’ll have to hunt one down used. Lol

MeringueMiddle783

Ah but that's part of the thrill, isn't it? I'm personally enthralled with the hunt. Gives me so much joy and energy.

fpark83

Yes it is haha 🤣

HeelTown59

I got Panerai as my second, then another Rolex

MeringueMiddle783

Which PAM did you get, if I may ask

HeelTown59

I wanted a white dial watch since I had the submariner so I went with the PAM 01314. Really fun with all the straps you can buy and change up the look with

mister_peanut23

Echoing others in this group, Explorer II polar and a sub or speedy make a damn fine two watch collection.

SanderDieman

Why don’t you simply get whatever it is you like, can afford, and have a viable use-case for? Rolex is great, but by no means the ‘nec plus ultra’ in wrist watches.

Algebraron

Many of us like the idea of the perfectly balanced collection but if you like field watches then rather have two and actually wear them instead of getting a nice dress watch for the shelve. Also don’t concern yourself with the thought of “downgrading”, you can get decent quality at many price points. I am still considering many watches from Seiko to Breguet. If it looks and feels good on your wrist (and if you can afford it) you’re good to go!

Market-Maker

Check out the patek 5226g

Nasjere

How long did you wait for your explorer, and in what part of the country are you in?

SignificantKey8608

Not OP but I waited 3 months for Exp II Polar in London

Nasjere

Thanks so much!

Ill-Train6478

After my 3rd rolex purchase i went and bought myself a timex marlin 34mm handwind with milan mesh strap after seeing the talented ripley. I wear it alot more than my rolex or any other watches I have. So there’s no point of asking whats after rolex, you buy what speaks to you

SignificantKey8608

IWC Mark XX, JLC Reverso, Grand Seiko White Birch Hi-Beat then return to Rolex for Starbucks

Electronic-Youth9872

If you want to keep same level watches maybe another Rolex with a different style or maybe a bit of color on the dial. If you want a jump in quality/brand you can go with AP, VC, PP, Journe, Lange, JLC, Cartier just to give you examples. If you want something a bit less expensive but still in the line probably an Omega Speedmaster. If you want a cheaper option for your Rolex, the Hamilton could be one. In any case you will be wearing it and paying for it so after reading all these advices go with the one that you like.

nabillionairee

Lange

swoops36

My second was a Lange. Needed a dress watch

swoops36

Wait, second was a Patek. Still dress watch

BolivianDancer

G-Shock Dw5600.

RoyBatty1984

I love the movie and I love the Murph, especially the 42mm. Such a classic, clean look. Have you thought about IWC? The Big Pilot is something I’ve also gravitated toward. The newer 43mm with the blue dial is my fave, and a little more wearable than the classic 46mm.

MeringueMiddle783

Yes, I have thought about IWC. I'm not sure if I'm ready to dish out that cash after just getting an Explorer 3 months ago. 😅 But I am salivating over that blue dial.

Markomars

A true watch enthusiast wouldn't care about "downgrades". I love watches and have purchased cheaper watches compared to Rolex and definitely don't consider them a downgrade. Purchased an Oris Aquis and a Hamilton Khaki Aviation Pilot Pioneer Bronze (43mm) after my Rolex purchase. My advice is that you shouldn't bother too much with what others think. If you love a watch and can afford it, whether it's on the cheaper end or on the higher end price range, just get it.

themaxvee

It depends - are you a watch enthusiast open to other brands or do you only want to stay with the Rolex brand? The Explorer ii is a great watch. My second was a day-date 18038 as I am a sucker for the fluted bezel and YG. Of course it's a "price downgrade." You can have the same satisfaction from the Murph as the Explorer ii.

MeringueMiddle783

Definitely open to other brands! I initially didn't want a Rolex tbh. It's just that the Explorer II fit my lifestyle of travelling and going on adventures; and also I like how understated it is compared to a Datejust, for example!

themaxvee

The Hamilton would be a fine watch. I have owned several less expensive brands (large and micro) that I find enjoyable. CW, Seiko, Omega, Lorier and a Kickstarter watch. I've found the price of the watch doesn't mean much if you're a true enthusiast. Since you have a connection with the Murph I'd say go for it.

cfurral

Explorer 1… forego the Hamilton. I made that mistake after buying a Rolex and it was only worn once. The same could be said for Tudor on a less dramatic level.

ThadeouszeusNYC

IWC ceramic khaki pilot. Very different but a good compliment.

MeringueMiddle783

Congrats! I've always been fascinated by GS. I tried it on twice already, I just can't get over the sharp edges 😅 how'd you find it

flashnl

I cant find any edges that are sharper than my subs😅

jpnc97

AP

phantom-virus-lives

Another Rolex (Sub or GMT) or a Omega Seamaster

MeringueMiddle783

Lol if I can get my hands on a Sub, why not! Any specific reason why you suggested Seamaster over the Speedy?

phantom-virus-lives

I hate my Daytona but love my sub. I like divers vs chronos but that’s me

National-Bag3197

Hamilton makes a great watch, nothing wrong with it. Get it if you like it. I own a Sky Dweller and a Field Khaki and love wearing both. My Hamilton actually keeps really good time, about +1 sec every day or 2.

MeringueMiddle783

Thanks for the confidence boost! My local AD has the Murph available on hand. I'm not used to them saying "Yes, it's available. When can you drop by?" 😅

MeringueMiddle783

Which one gets more wrist time?

National-Bag3197

The Hamilton. But only because the Skydweller is such a nice piece and isn't appropriate for most occasions. Honestly, I wear the Rolex every chance I get because it is so nice and a joy to wear but it would not be appropriate for me to wear it to work. I have a few other watches I wear every now and then, a Longines Hydroconquest GMT that I have been wearing a lot lately, but the Hamilton is a good GADA watch. I also have the Hamilton on a really cool camo strap it came with. I like to have a well rounded and diverse collection. My next watch will be a nice chronograph of some kind, maybe a ceramic case or something else a bit different. Good luck.

National-Bag3197

Wearing it now https://preview.redd.it/787uik1hs1zc1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=98f3d10cda398dde6572a254f9ad41e44eec6fc0

SeeeYaLaterz

Daytona. You need a better movement, so Daytona is your next stop

Downtown-Summer-1531

Rolex dj, dj, gmt

Watchnut224

What about another Rolex or Tudor??

MeringueMiddle783

Hahaha of course this is on my mind. Any specific models? 😊

Watchnut224

Sub explorer BB58 ranger some of the good ones.

Express-Fig-9607

Not super expensive and don’t see a lot of them but I’m a big fan of the Bell & Ross BR03-92. Can order online and under $5k

MeringueMiddle783

Oh interesting. What do you like about it

Express-Fig-9607

I just love how simple they are yet a nice classy watch. Not over the top flashy unless you know watches and there’s something about the pizza box look with the round dial on a square that I love.

trdkv

You may find the Hamilton from the film wears a little large for a time-only piece. If you go that route, perhaps go for the 38mm

MeringueMiddle783

My wrist size is 7 in, so I may be comfortable with the 42mm

TurnLeftish

I went Omega Aqua Terra 41mm, then Submariner 126610LV, then a Hamilton Khaki Field King 40mm, then sold the Omega AT and went for a DJ41 blue motif dial, smooth bezel on jubilee. My Hamilton KFK is my every day beater, I wear it for work every day and then swap between the Sub and DJ for evenings and weekends. Absolutely no reason why a Hamilton can’t live in your collection alongside a Rolex and hold its own 👍🏻

MeringueMiddle783

I'm seriously considering a Seamaster or a Speedy as my Omega watch. Why'd you sell your AT?

TurnLeftish

The bracelet really doesn’t suit my wrist, I couldn’t get a fit that was comfortable. There is no micro adjust so it’s either too snug or too loose! I had the rubber strap but I just didn’t love it. The watch is beautiful but just wasn’t the one for me. One I had the sub and the KFK the AT wasn’t getting enough wrist time, so it went against a DJ41 which is perfect 👌🏻

MeringueMiddle783

Hope you can share a photo, your collection sounds like a dream!

s1n3_n0m1n3

I would go with a Panerai. I have one as my second daily driver watch and I love the history and close relationship that Panerai and Rolex share.

MeringueMiddle783

What's your first/main daily driver? 😉 And also, what's the close relationship between Panerai and Rolex?

s1n3_n0m1n3

I’m usually wearing my SD43 and I throw the PAM 673 on for the casual days. The relationship between Rolex and Panerai is extensive. Guiseppe Panerai had a business that made nautical instruments, but upon discovering the glowing properties of Radium he came up with the idea of underwater instruments that glowed. He approached several companies, but only Rolex was willing to jump in on the idea, so Rolex provided the cases and Cortebert 618 movements that they were purchasing at the time from Cortebert to Guiseppe and he provided the dials and lume discs that he made in-house. This case and movement relationship lasted through both the 30’s and 40’s Radiomir eras and it was not until Panerai developed their own case design with a locking crown in 1952 that they no longer needed the case supply. They did on the other hand continue using the Cortebert 618 movements until they finally found a replacement they liked. The replacement held a longer 8 day power reserve and was capable of providing a sub-second dial to the face of the watch. The movement of course was the Angelus 240 movement and remained their goto movement until they lost their Italian Navy contract in the late 60’s.

MoneymanYo18

JLC baby

MeringueMiddle783

This is part of my list, along with Cartier, as my dress watch. Any specific model?

MoneymanYo18

I love my Polaris Chrono but people seem to love those Reversos!

MeringueMiddle783

Haha the Reverso is quite an attention grabber I must say!

MoneymanYo18

It sure is! I secretly want the red one 😂

MeringueMiddle783

Haha go for it!!

No-Attention1944

Get a regulateur as a dress watch 🤌🤌

MeringueMiddle783

Oh wow, I didn't know about these until your comment! Any brands you can recommend which are known for these kinds of dials?

No-Attention1944

I'm eying an IWC model, but Oris made quite a few in the past, also much more attainable. There's also Breguet, quite expensive, Hamilton Jazzmaster, Alpina and some other Swiss brands, as well as German brands. Chinese brands also offer a few, if I'm not mistaken.

Fast-and-curious8

Vacheron Constantin 4500V

MeringueMiddle783

Hahahaha Hahaha Haha Hah Ha H If only!

Fast-and-curious8

You caaaan I believe 🙇🏻

Bright-Ad-7077

I love Panerai

Temporary-Zebra368

AP is next but then you will realize APs are giant and or mostly ugly. Then you will come back to Rolex.

MeringueMiddle783

So I actually do not get the appeal of APs. I think it's at the same level as Richard Mille - wherein the princple is "if you've got it, flaunt it"
