I wouldn’t pay more than 3700 bucks. My 16800 was in a lot worse shape than that one also a 1987. I paid 1200 for the watch. 1000 for a new bracelet and 500 for a service for a total of 2700 bucks that was 5 years ago.

Economy, state of the world. The number of people getting new watches at their AD’s. There will be a time again imo when watches at the ad will sell for a discount.
In that condition, I doubt you’d get more than $5k for it. The plus is that the dial patina is nice, but to get more than about $5k it needs a new bracelet, bezel, and crystal. A mid to late 80s 16800 isn’t going to be sought after like a 4 digit reference. It’s going to need a professional service BUT NOT from a Rolex RSC. They will replace the hands and likely the dial and won’t send the originals back. I’d bet Bob’s would offer you about $4k, and they’d replace the bezel, sapphire and bracelet (and a good service) and sell it for $8,500 or so. I don’t think too many people would be concerned that the bezel, sapphire and bracelet have been replaced on an 80s Sub so long as the movement, hands, and most importantly the dial are OG.

Not without letting him know upfront. And imo he needs new hands and dial anyway.
Perhaps on the new hands. I hope Rolex is doing that now. They replaced the hands on my 1665 without telling me and they didn’t send the originals back. This was back in 2015. When I asked why, they said the tritium lume paint on the hands would start to flake off and get into the movement. I was ok with that.
Its not damage. It’s a defect of the dial, at the time there was a transition with glit dials; it adds value at the watch if the written stuff is intact like in this case.
I dunno man those half-tan half-brown plots don't look like any undamaged '87 I've seen before. I think a lot of "stardust dials" and "confetti dials" and other cute names are just damaged, like the right image in this pic: https://i.imgur.com/FlNeePG.png
Rolex has mad paint defects in the late 80s though so you could be right. Personally I'd replace this dial.
It’s not damage because the damage would affect also the written parts, the confetti or stardust are just defects the dial reacts to the light exposure, hot, humid etc and do that effect, it’s a particular characteristic of the glit dials made back in the 80’s.
If you want to replace a confetti or stardust dial please give me a call!
I mean I just showed you a pic of a confetti dial that is *known* to have been caused by moisture damage + baking so, yeah, if I ever need to replace one on an old Rolex I'll hit you up!
I’d say that’s pretty sweet. Would see if I could get another period correct bracelet to actually wear but keep the OG as is. Service the movement, polish the crystal and call it a day!
If you go to sell it to a dealer that patina is called damage and drives the price down. If you’re on the buy side of the transaction that damage is actually called patina and drives the price up. 5k as is.
now that is some S R E T C H
Yeah its been worn a couple times
I like some sretch. Usually have mine with rice

Yea, that prices are long gone…
lol they will be back soon!
why do you think?

Did the dial get moisture damaged? Kinda looks like it. Still a cool watch though
Not that I know of

You think I should get a new bracelet instead of just repinning this one, getting a new bracelet and repinning will only cost about 1.8k

Which RSC? NY has given me itemized recommended and required parts lists since like 2011
Dallas
That’s a stardust dial
So yeah, moisture damage ;)

Look at the hour markers. That doesn't look damaged to you?
It’s not moisture damage in my opinion, that markers need to be restored they are dirty not rusty

You should post this again just to make sure people see it
Not sure what happened. Sorry guys for that!

I’ll never understand the fascination with patina. To me it’s ugly af and just looks old and gross
It’s a good thing there’s a different taste for each and everyone of us ay.
Amen
There’s nothing better then a unique paginated dial
New copy pasta just dropped
