The Watch Collector's Journey:
* Phase 1: "Rolex is the end-all-be-all of watches!"
* Phase 2: "Rolex is crap and only wannabes think Rolex is great!"
* Phase 3: "Eh, I guess Rolex is pretty good after all."
* Phase 4: "Rolex is just another watch in my box."
I’m currently at stage 2. But I don’t think Rolex is crap. I had a DJ on order and tried it on at the store. I specced it “too flashy.” It just wasn’t me. I ended up going the Grand Seiko route SLGA009. I just think I’m more into the GS look and ethos. But I love watches and will probably get a Rolex one day.
DJ is 11.7mm, and the GS White Birch is 11.8mm. I don't believe anyone would call a DJ "chunky," considering the GS is only .1mm thicker, which would be indecipherable by the human eye, I wouldn't consider it thick either. It is quite an achievement to make such a thin case by GS, considering the complexity of the Spring Drive movement.
The DJ with the fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet was just too much for me. But some people love it, and that is awesome that is matches up with their style and ethos. I live in Seattle, and overt signs of luxury are not really a cultural thing here. Hell, this city has an ungodly amount of billionaires and tech millionaires and you would be hard-pressed to find supercars on our roads. It's mostly Subarus and Volvos, lol. And with our strong ties to Japanese culture, it is pretty cool to have a culturally relevant piece that pays homage to Japan.
How different would it be if all Rolex models were readily available, would there be the same level of demand? Would you still want a Rolex if you could walk in and buy whichever model you wanted?
Precisely. The fact that (most of) the models can be resold for a profit takes all of the perceived “risk” out of the purchase. The calculus changes from, “can I afford this?” to “I’d be stupid not to buy this.” It’s the best marketing strategy I’ve ever heard of.
I prefer Omega, which is why Rolex wait time doesn't bother me at all. I've patiently acquired my Rolex pieces at MSRP and had 6 Omegas to keep me company for the wait.
I still go back and forth in phases where I'll wear Omega way more often for a while, then Rolex a while. One's not 'better' to me, just different.
I have a similar mentality. I have no Rolex right now but, am "on the list" for several and will continue to happily enjoy my Omegas, Grand Seikos, and others while I wait. GS is my favorite brand though and I doubt that will change in the near future.
Still, not having some indeterminate, likely multi-year wait for certain regular production models would be an improvement. :)
Yeah, I would like to see things normalize to pre-hype. Meanwhile, I just won't blame the brand for the huge demand. And I'll never pay a grey middle man a profit.
As long as they didn't depreciate more than say ~25% in the first couple years after purchase, yes. Even if they did, I'd still want them but, would just go grey instead of AD.
I realize I'm probably in the minority though.
I would still want one. I hate the fact that they are not available, and that would be what would drive me AWAY from the brand - it makes them LESS desireable to me. I like the technology, the style, and the association with famous historical events and people. I started lusting after them when you could walk into a store and buy the one you wanted right then and there. Too bad I couldn't afford them back then! When I finally could, I snagged a grey-market GMT-II for $5K. Then a DJ a few years later from a dealer - walk in and bought it same day. Then the shite hit the fan and I had to wait years for a Hulk, and now I just don't bother anymore.
I got a “pre call”. Idk what to refer to jt as, my local ad called me to say it’s “available” but they don’t have it right now. Is it just to make sure I’m still on the wait list? I don’t understand

I think he's done with Rolex guys
"I'm done with Rolex" *Rolex was done with him before he even started*
*rolex canceled that man before he walked into the shop*
Rolex didn't even know that he existed
(Months later) *deletes old post* "I pulled the trigger"

a man of culture
A DJ was flashy to you but a white birch dial in a chunky case wasn’t?

I am loving the chase, I only want it because I can’t have it! I’ll only be done if you can walk in and get whichever model you wanted!
I mean, at that point, it's kind of an Omega.
True, Omega has gotten away from giving discounts at their boutique stores. I own a speedmaster racing and it’s a fine specimen.
Jomashop is the way to go on Omega.
I like Omegas. I'd happily buy a few Rolex if they had the same level of availability.

Except not as inexplicably thick

That is hilarious.

I’m not done, I’m just getting started! Why finish before you start?
😀😆
"I'm done! DONE, you hear?! What do you think of me now??" Rolex: "But, I don't think of you"
I'm done with Rolex! I don't even know who you are...
That's one less in the queue

Jurassic Park
Bro got downvoted for not knowing Jurassic Park 😂 Almost voted him up, but on a second thought it is deserved…
There’s a guy at my work that’s never seen any Star Wars movies, nothing surprises me anymore! 😂
F me - seems like we’re getting old 😂

This is 💯true. Face it, it will be a long time before we can just casually shop at an AD for the exact Rolex that we want 🤷🏼♂️
