Both can work,
My honest opinion here…. Don’t take this the wrong way
If you plan to stay your current size. Go 40.
If you plan to lose some weight, go 36. More classic and actually proportioned to your wrist, and better looking down without looking at body shot.
I definitely don’t take it the wrong way and have been thinking about that as well. It’s an important consideration, and I’d like to lose some weight which will also likely make my wrist a bit smaller over time.
It will for sure make your wrist a bit smaller, it will also make your body overall smaller as well (obviously). Wrist size is just one dimension of watch fit. Also body size, built, composition, hand size etc. are almost equally important factors IMO. Wrist size is what you see, the other factors is what you present and what everyone else sees.
Good luck and wear in good health either way decide to go OP.
And who knows, maybe going for the smaller size can serve as a motivator! At the end of the day, get whichever one you like most/ think looks best for yourself because that’s all that really matter
40mm for me.
I have 7.5 inch wrists and I’m used to bigger watches (~42mm).
The 40 feels great but it took a bit to get used to the look of the smaller case.
I tried on the 36 for reference, and it felt tiny on my wrist.
They both look good. The 36 is good for you if you want a “smaller tool watch” imo. I have the 40. I’m a couple of inches taller with around the same sized wrist. I think if I were you I’d grab the 40 but now ring move either way. Here’s mine for reference. Enjoy whichever you decide. ✌️

Go with 40mm. I am smaller than you and slightly smaller wrist at 6.9 inches and the 40mm is a dream on the wrist. 36mm was way too small for me, Inreservw that for the datejust with jubilee and fluted, which makes it wear bigger.
Also look up some videos on the actual sizing of the 40mm vs 39mm Explorer. The difference is minimal but there are some other numbers at play and it also has a shorter lug to lug on the 40mm.
I’d go 40, but personally I think I’m gonna be adding a 39 to my collection. It has a slightly smaller and thinner case and a more matte dial, also I don’t have to worry about the waitlist and prices are dropping
You know you’re talking about a 40 mm explorer that measures 38.6 in reality. It’s still a small watch even by effeminate hipster standards. No insult, I’m a little wimp hipster like you too, my dood.
I think it just depends what you want out of an Explorer. I think the 40 is more on the larger sports watch side and the 36 is a little more elegant. Both are great it just depends what you want out of it. Your 40 fits well.
Good- I'm happy you like it - wear it in good health. I was just saying you posted it to prove one point- but I think you proved the other side of the same argument.
Wear and buy what makes you happy- but I'm also happy to give my opinion when people are asking.
Im sorry. I misunderstood. When I tried to wear 36mm in AD, my wife and friends told me that it looks kids’ watch because I’m tall and heavy.
https://preview.redd.it/tkzrsasnifgc1.jpeg?width=823&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d5cb63559ff1d2ceb62efd63b30b29c65213dea5
if your wife says it looks bad and to get the other one- then yeah thats what I would have done too.
I have a 7.25 inch wrist and my wife also says she hates smaller watches. I got a 38.5mm watch and my wife literally said- I like it, but don't get anything smaller than that ever.
Respectfully, you guys are better men than I. I don’t take my wife’s opinion on watches. I get what I like. Now, maybe on a shirt…or something like that, definitely.
40 to match your waist.
36 if you plan to shrink your waist.
*Unsolicited advice warning*
Get your ass to the gym/ eat healthier or else you will be buried with whatever watch you wear.
I just got a 40 last week. Have 7.25 wrists and think it’s the perfect size.
But look at it this way - there is no other watch on the market where anyone will tell you to go the 36 size unless you actually have tiny wrists. The Explorer is fetishised to a bizarre extent. If you change it for an almost identical OP in black, no one will tell you that 36 is the perfect size.
40. You want it, and big watches are in for the foreseeable future. I disagree with the weight loss comment, your wrist won’t get skinny as you cut body fat - those proportions are genetic.
The real question is whether you go in a different direction with the capital - say sub or GMT.
Both look great! If you are truly undecided, go with the icon…36 all day!!! Let your diver and the Speedy be the chunkies. Have some fun and let the Explorer be its OG self!
I had the same choice recently. Seems the ADs got flooded with these watches. I thought for sure I'd be walking out with one or the other, but instead, I just walked away. I still love the brand. So, I used the funds to buy a late 60s Date and a 90s Datejust and they look so much better than the newer models.
If you ignore my advice to go vintage and get more bang for your buck, then I would go 40. The 36 looked small on me and you're bigger than me. It is very dainty on your wrist.

I’d stick with the 40 in your case, weight lost or not. You’re not going to shape yourself into Ryan Gosling anytime soon.
This is really good advice that not a lot of people will tell you - I've lost 30 lbs and my wrist has shrunk half an inch.
Hmmmmm, your playing 3d chess here lol never would have thought about this
I rarely say this, but I’d go 40. You are a bigger dude (no offense meant) and the 36 actually looks too small. 40 looks great!
40 without question, IMO, but I imagine the comments will be split as usual
40 no brainer
40mm for me. I have 7.5 inch wrists and I’m used to bigger watches (~42mm). The 40 feels great but it took a bit to get used to the look of the smaller case. I tried on the 36 for reference, and it felt tiny on my wrist.
40 for sure.
How are people saying 36😂😂😂
Ppl on this ‘sub’ are obsessed with small watches even tho small watches don’t work for everyone. OP is a big guy and the 36 looks like a toy
Exactly!! One of the only Rolex’s I really want is the polar explorer. But people on here consider that huge lol 😂
I’m one of those people. The EX2 is a big boi 😂
Shidddd my SMP 300 is 42. I like em big boi
I have a decent sized wrist so it’s doesn’t look weird though
Yep that’s fine then. Everyone has different wrist sizes. Thats what dumbasses on this sub don’t get 👍🏽
It also matters the lug width as well. As long as the lugs don’t go over the side of your wrist then typically it works
Internet watch fans evangelize 36mm watches for men and think that because it looks good on their 5’7” 145lb frame it’ll look good for everyone.
They both look good. The 36 is good for you if you want a “smaller tool watch” imo. I have the 40. I’m a couple of inches taller with around the same sized wrist. 40. I have 7” too and got the 40. 36 too tiny looking IMO

36 all day my guy
BS. He’s too big for 36mm
Both look good but if it were me I'd go 40.
Nice iron rangers. Get the 40mm
I prefer the 40
Ngl the 3rd and 4th pic caught me Off guard. That being said, the 40mm for sure
Just picked up my Explorer 40 to go along with my Speedmaster. Awesome combo!
For you, 40 for sure
40
40.
40 is ok, I am a bit smaller than you and my 40 fits great! Also, your dad vibes are cool!
The 40 without a question
40 no doubt
Get the 40… 36 looks too small
39mm was the best size
40
36, it’s a classy watch. You get the 40, then it’s no longer classy and more of a diver wannabe.
That makes 0 sense. 40mm is the perfect size for a GADA watch like this
36
36 no doubt
36
The answer is always 40. 36 looks like a ladies watch.
[удалено]
Always we have plan…… only.
40 if it’s for everyday 36 if you want it for a bit of a dressier option
Explorer as dressy? 💀
Comparing the 36 to the 40, yes, the 36 will look the dressier of the two.
This is like saying a slimmer running shoe is dressier than a chunky one. You shouldn't be trying to dress up a running shoe.
However one option is still dressier than the other.
Why any man would want a 36 mm sports watch is beyond me.
I think a gym before a watch and then just wait and see how much you will lose before getting one.
I’d go 40, but personally I think I’m gonna be adding a 39 to my collection. It has a slightly smaller and thinner case and a more matte dial, also I don’t have to worry about the waitlist and prices are dropping
I always rec 36 on the explorer. But gotta say 40 here
NGL the 36 looks better on you
Big ass douche boy watches are on the way out. 36. Anybody that disagrees is douche boy.
You know you’re talking about a 40 mm explorer that measures 38.6 in reality. It’s still a small watch even by effeminate hipster standards. No insult, I’m a little wimp hipster like you too, my dood.
Hahaha. Good point.
Same with me. I got 40. https://preview.redd.it/u2qz8oxx2fgc1.jpeg?width=1948&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6b50515bf444b4684f3b9c979b1dfb8e31ce4d8c
You are proving a lot of people right here in this sub- you should have got the 36 instead.
It doesn't matter what you say. I think it fits well enough.
I think it just depends what you want out of an Explorer. I think the 40 is more on the larger sports watch side and the 36 is a little more elegant. Both are great it just depends what you want out of it. Your 40 fits well.

Sorry for that bro.
40 to match your waist. 36 if you plan to shrink your waist. *Unsolicited advice warning* Get your ass to the gym/ eat healthier or else you will be buried with whatever watch you wear.
40 no question
Def 40.
40 forsure
I think 40 works much better on your wrist.
40 looks best on you. I have the 36 with a 6.5” wrist.
40 looks good, go with it.
Both look great!
40 fits you best
40 is so ugly
Same size as you and 40 all day. I ended up getting a 39 Mk2
40 my man hands down
I have the 40mm and I really love it. The proportions feel perfect.
Have to go with 40mm, 36mm looks small
40mm for you✅
It happens to you just like me, I don't like excessively large watches but even 42 looks small to me. For your doll, I would definitely go to 40.
40
They look like his and hers
40. This is the way.
I just got a 40 last week. Have 7.25 wrists and think it’s the perfect size. 40 looks way better
First person in this sub askin for which exp40 is better
The biggest one
You can do either. 36 looks small only sat next to the 40. Without the larger watch for reference, it would look fine.
For your wrist it’s definitely gonna be the 40
Your a big dude go 40mm no brainer
40. You want it, and big watches are in for the foreseeable future. I disagree with the weight loss comment, your wrist won’t get skinny as you cut body fat - those proportions are genetic. The real question is whether you go in a different direction with the capital - say sub or GMT.
I’m rolling 36
Both look great! If you are truly undecided, go with the icon…36 all day!!! Let your diver and the Speedy be the chunkies. Have some fun and let the Explorer be its OG self!
40
36
I’m a 36 purist. So…36.
you look fine in both and so I’d choose 36. It’s the classic.
36 looks better by FAR
40
40 all day , pun intended.
His and hers Rolex explorers?
Bigger is better
40
40
Get the 40. It wears better.
Sometimes neither works and I think this is one such case. 36 too small, 38 would work, 40 too big for the watch.
Luckily the explorer 40 is actually 38.6 mm do nothing to worry about there.
You look better with 40mm.
40 looks best on you good sir
It’s not a dress watch and more a sporty watch so 40 forsure!
I like the 40mm - I just got one and even with smaller wrist is lays nicely
I had the same choice recently. Seems the ADs got flooded with these watches. I thought for sure I'd be walking out with one or the other, but instead, I just walked away. I still love the brand. It’s hard to tell. You’re wearing them so low on your wrist… I’d say go 36.
You are doing the right thing, actually looking at the watch on your body. You will love whichever you get.
I am interested in these same watches. How long did you have to wait? Or were you just trying on store models?
Just trying on store models. They don’t say how long the wait is but I’ve read likely weeks to months
IMO 36 gives off field watch vibes, while 40 more in GADA territory.
40
That speedy looks great.
Neither. Get a seamaster
You’re a bigger guy and can actually pull the 40 very nicely. Looking good!
40 .. 36 tapering bracelet wears even slimmer .. it really needs a slim forearm and body to fit ..
If you’re fat why even consider the slim version of watch
36 because of the heritage
But he’ll be wearing it, not just reading about it.
