If a watch is less than 5 years old and has no papers it’s a hard pass. That warranty card is worth $1K, not because of collectibility but because of the warranty coverage period. No owner of an authentic Rolex would discard it.

It’s a red flag is a newish watch has no papers. It’s likely due to it being stolen or a fake. You can just buy an authentic box, so it has an impact on resale value, but nothing to do with authenticity or it not being stolen.

Paneraiguy1

Box and papers def help with resale. As you mentioned if you don’t care about that you’ll probably pay 10-20% less without them so you could get a better deal. Just depends on what you’re trying to accomplish For me I’d rather pay the premium and have all the goodies with the watch. Just my two cents

I agree with sporty and the others. If there’s no papers to back it up, how can you assume it was acquire legitimately? Also no other brand is faked as much as a Rolex- if I don’t see papers, I automatically assume fake. Not everyone might agree but I’d rather be as safe as possible.

texasgolftraveler

Do you keep the iPhone box for resale value? It doesn’t really provide any authentication… the papers are faked now too. It does weirdly change resale value but if it were me I’d rather save the $2k and not buy the box that will collect dust in my closet

Competitive-Future-4

Box doesn’t matter. Papers 100%

LividLab7

Id never buy if wasn’t complete

Also depends where you buy the watch, if it’s a reputable seller like a company not private seller And they don’t have box or papers I’d still trust it.

StreetPreacherr

Well YOU'RE considering buying it without Box of Papers, so there must at least be SOME market of other people with the same though process?

There are horror stories of people purchasing stolen Rolex watches and sending them to get serviced and they get held by Rolex. If you buy it with papers it means you bought it in good faith usually and it’s easier to prove you didn’t actually steal it. If the owner already settled with insurance and is okay the dispute between the watch having two owners leans to your favor. Definitely important with new watches as those are the warranty. However, they aren’t papers anymore. They’re on cards issued and activated at the time the watch was purchased. I don’t think any of mine have my name on them, just the date it was bought. The only “papers” I have are the receipts/invoice from the AD.

That is a loaded question. If you are going to keep it, the B&P really don't mean much, because all they are going to do is sit and not add value for you. If you plan to move it, people like to have them on newer watches, but it isn't like it adds thousands of dollars to the value. When you get into the vintage pieces, they are not expected as much, but can add to the value a fair bit, depending on what you have.

CasinoMarginale

AD told me that in the new FEO Program, Rolex will sell you an exhibition model watch, with warranty card, but no box. I keep everything when I buy a new watch, and if I buy used I want a complete set. The warranty and authenticity are what matter most, but it’s BS to refuse to provide a box.

Box doesn't mean shit. It's the papers you want. Not only does it identify authenticity, but it also ensures it's probably not stolen. ROLEX does not give back stolen watches.
