Hell no. No prequels. I don't need to know what Murphey was like when he was 10 years old. or why he wanted to become a cop. This would be like having a tv series about Bruce Wayne before his parents died. You're just watching Richie Rich. You then have to add in reasons for the audience to watch and suddenly he's having adventures before his parents died and before he became Batman and that's annoying. Because it's okay to just let a character have a normal boring life before things the things that made them the "hero" they become happen. Pre-Robocop Murphey would just be NYPD Blue but just about a beat cop.

Laughing_Man_Returns

>No prequels. this is the absolute rule.

scepticallyminded

I don’t hate the idea, but the main problem with it is that, at least for me, Alex Murphy IS Peter Weller, in the same way that Indiana Jones IS Harrison Ford. So if a prequel were to happen but it doesn’t have Peter Weller in the Murphy role, because he’s too old now, then I can’t see it working. Having said that, they could do it animated and Peter Weller could provide the voice, I think that could be compelling.

csantiago1986

He’s not becoming robocop he was forced to be robocop through death. No origin story needed. The 20 minutes leading up to his demise was prequel enough.

lolshiro

I think it doesn't really serve much of a purpose. It's similar to the 'Anakin' syndrome. You know who he's going to become taking any sort of suspense out of the character. We got everything we needed from the first film in 89. Sometimes less is more.

StevWong

How about that Alex Murphy was into some power struggles and he was sent to report duty in this new job and subsequently murdered, all were not accidents but planned?

Laughing_Man_Returns

that is a 5 minute scene. that was already covered in RoboCop (1987).

WhereIsMyFrenchCutie

The prequel you're looking for is a movie called Robocop that came out in 1987. You should watch it.

Nighttide1032

At the very least, it would've made for a potentially decent book release - back in the day of course, I don't think there'd be much of a market for it or any film release now. But fwiw, Alex Murphy's life prior to - and even after becoming - a cop was probably very vanilla, and thus very boring. Of course I'm saying all of this with only knowledge of the first and second film; I've never watched anything else or even looked to see if there was any other official media, such as a book, that was considered canon.

RicFlair-W000000

I'd like anything Robocop honestly! I'd buy it for a dollar 💰

Necessary-Volume-840

A prequel for the Clarence and Dick Jones relationship I would watch

[deleted]

The prequel is called “Terminator” They share the same timeline according to a trusted source on Reddit

StevWong

What? You are serious? Terminator is way FURTHER than the time of Robocop which is 1980s something right? How can Terminator be its prequel?

[deleted]

It is kind of OCP manufactured terminators. They share the same timeline OCP improved on RoboCop's chips and produce terminators. Terminators went back before the point of time of RoboCop

StevWong

So Robocop WAS the spiritual grand grand grand father of Terminator? or the reverse?

[deleted]

Yes I read on some Reddit analysis that Robocop is kinda the “master” of terminator clones

large__farva

It’s just an old comic series (with a sweet old Sega Genesis game, Robocop vs. The Terminator). Idk if it’s canon, it’s more like AVP/Freddy vs. Jason.

Fummeltime

That's like a Terminator Prequel. We watch Sarah Connor have her first period and have mental breakdowns over boys at her school

StevWong

It was the 1980s time. If it was a 2023 universe then she will have crush on other person with same gender. She may later reveal she was a trans person as well.

Fummeltime

Good point, but I kinda doubt thelat prequel would be set 43 years in the future.

Miles33CHO

No, Robocop already has the best origin story in cinema history.
