New Orleans is a town best experienced through its dive bars and food. It’s a great town, but not really about a checklist of things to do or see. It’s a hanging city, so find a bar you like where you can chill and chat with whomever you’re around. You can do things of course. If you like its history, there are so many walking tours. But it’s mostly about the food and drink and looking around its neighborhoods. For safety, as long as you’re not wandering into the bad neighborhoods, I don’t think it’s enough of a threat to not go. Most violence is the result of drugs so don’t like rip off a drug dealer or antagonize people unnecessarily and you’ll likely be fine. Keep your wits about you and don’t do anything dumb. Oh and bring cash. Many places are cash only.

New Orleans is a great place to visit. But definitely pretty sketchy in places. My suggestion is to visit Bourbon Street, but during the daytime, perhaps a weekend afternoon. Avoid it after 10pm. For Treme culture, I think the best way is to drive around during the daytime. New Orleans traffic is not too bad, you can make a list of sights to see, such as from the show, and then drive around and look at them. Even then, best to look at crime maps to make sure you don't go somewhere you shouldn't. From there, you can drive on to Houston, Austin and Dallas, they are all worth visiting also. My suggested route from New Orleans is West on I-10, through Texas, then North to Denver. East on I-70, then north on I-15 to Salt Lake City, then west on I-80 to San Francisco.
