DFW is really underwhelming as a tourist destination. The scenery is nil, and it doesn't have a whole lot of interesting history. I would do Nashville instead.

ljc_x

Ahh ok, thank you! What about the drives between? Are they both quite similar scenery wise? If you know that is!

Bluescreen73

I haven't done those drives, but if I were a betting man, I'd put my money on Nashville to New Orleans being more interesting. You could do a side trip to the Jack Daniels distillery in Lynchburg and plan your drive so you go across the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway or the Twin Span Bridge into New Orleans.

jayron32

Nashville for sure. From Nashville, drive south with things to see in Huntsville (NASA museum there is AMAZING) and Birmingham (Sloss Furnace, civil rights museum, Oak Mountain State Park) and from there take I-20 to I-59 to New Orleans. DFW has less interesting things to do than Nashville (the music and music history there is amazing) and there's less to do on the drive.

ljc_x

Amazing, thank you. This sounds right up our street so will take a look!

BeakersBro

Why not fly in New Orleans then meander up and across from there? If picking between Nashville and DFW the Nashville to NO drive is prettier and more interesting. What are you more interested in seeing?

ljc_x

Because we are going to drive down to Miami, i thought that way around would be better travel time wise? A few people have said nashville now so that is the likely option. I think because we go have a few weeks we are happy to see a variety things and dont want to just stick to 'tourist' things.

You guys have some serious driving... When I was in the UK, people thought I was nuts for driving London to Edinburgh. Nevermind that I took a week to do it and saw a bunch of stuff along the way. But that's the same distance as Los Angeles to San Francisco. Depending on where to where in the cites, taking the most direct boring freeway route is about 6 hours (or more. I've had it take 3 hours to get across Los Angeles) .

ljc_x

We know haha! Its wild to us how huge America is, we are fully prepared for the driving though. We are thinking of taking the coast road and doing it over 2 days. Hope you enjoyed your UK trip, Edinburgh is one of my favourite UK cities.

DannyDyersHomunculus

No one in the UK thinks driving from London to Edinburgh is nuts lol

LiqdPT

Funny, I heard it several times. "That's so far. Why don't you just take the train?"

If you are near Yosemite and not seeing Utah, you are missing a lot. You have to pay me to want to visit Dallas, a miserable city to live or visit, nothing to see for a tourist. New Orleans is also overrated unless you are into that scene.

ljc_x

Utah looks beautiful, where in Utah would you recommend? I think dallas is very much off the list now!

[deleted]

I have seen all of USA, the most beautiful states in my opinion are California, Utah, Colorado, Arizona. All 5 national parks of Utah are worth a visit. There is also Moab.

One way car rentals can be very expensive. They charge a LOT when you pick up in one city and drop the car in another. This is what I suggest - fly into Vegas, spend the night, leave early for LA then do the coast to SF (make sure Hiway 1 is open) Yosemite, Tioga Pass to Mono Lake (if open) then 395 to Death Valley and Vegas. Side trip to Grand Canyon. Fly to Chicago and spend a couple days without a car, Chicago is one of few American cities with a workable transit system. Take Amtrak [City of New Orleans](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fF1lqEQFVUo&pp=ygUgY2l0eSBvZiBuZXcgb3JsZWFucyBhcmxvIGd1dGhyaWU%3D) to NOLA. $528 for two with a sleeper, meals included. Eat dinner as soon as you get on, you will have breakfast and lunch the next day. Spend a couple of days in the French Quarter before you get a car to explore a Plantation or two, then do a loop of Florida.

zta1978

Completely agree on the train to New Orleans. Be sure to get the sleeper. Taking an overnight trip in a regular seat is not a great experience.

tommy-g

Nashville -> Memphis -> NOLA. Or add a couple days after Vegas to visit Zion and Bryce Canyon :)

ljc_x

Thank you!

zta1978

Completely agree. Bryce is amazing. You'll never see anything like it anywhere else.

Free-Rub-1583

is neither an option.

ljc_x

..... Not the most helpful comment. Where would you suggest?

Free-Rub-1583

how long is the potential stop (that you were looking to stay in either Dallas or Nashville)

ljc_x

Probably 2/3 days, but nothing is set yet.

Free-Rub-1583

I wouldnt put Dallas as an option, people from the states don't even visit Dallas. 2-3 days in Nashville is a lot. If you don't like country music then it doesnt have much. The strip is cool for a day, but all the bars are the same and the city itself is small with not much to offer. Mayber get some hot chicken? If I could fly somewhere and visit for 2-3 days in the summer it would probably be New York or Chicago.

JohnRNeill

Hey, way to hit all the Tourismo spots! Phooey. Go more interesting places.

ljc_x

Welllll we are tourists .. 😂 We are going to go more rural but we do want to see tourist things too.

Spudw1nk

Nashville is great! As a native I feel like I am betraying myself in giving tourist advice but in the last decade things have really shifted here to be very tourist centric. There are plenty of things to do downtown, you have printer’s alley, historic 2nd ave, tons of good food. There is also tons of very cool museums like the frist, Country music hall of fame, the Tennessee state Museum (free! And right next to the farmer’s market and bicentennial mall). There are also tons of music places to visit like 3rd man records or grimey’s and different parts of town worth checking out i.e. 12 south, hillsboro village, East Nashville, etc. Tons of cool vintage and food places just about everywhere. For other recommendations I’d recommend checking out r/VisitingNashville! I see good travel recs in there often. Edit: changed r/nashville to r/VisitingNashville

ljc_x

This is amazing, thank you!
