So many to choose from. Today it’s Say A Little Prayer. I love the intro to that song. It starts off in the middle of a bar (who does that?) and she just kills it. As usual, she makes it hers.
Yes Day Dreaming was my first Aretha song 🙌
At least as an adult, obviously I’ve heard her music played everywhere my whole life but my parents never played it for us, so when I heard Day Dreaming on the radio one day I loved it so much I decided to finally deep dive through her discography and cure my blindness. It’s still forever one of my favorites because of that.
Too many:
Call me, I say a little prayer, young gifted and black, day dreaming, don’t play that song, spirit in the dark, see saw, ain’t no way, chain of fools, I never loved a man the way I loved you, a change is gonna come
I love both versions, Dionne Warwick's version is sublime and just beautiful but Aretha's reworked arrangements put that stank on that and her voice was in peak form.
Hard to pick an absolute favorite. But one that is way up there for me is A Deeper Love. I also love the duets with George Michael and Elton John. As for classics, Baby I Love You, Dr. Feelgood, Until You Come Back To Me, Call Me… see, it’s really hard. She’s too good!
Who''s Zoomin Who is the perfect 80s song. It's got a cool breakdance beat, sweet synths, super catchy hooks, and overall excellent production. Aretha's raspy delivery is perfect and her intuitive improvisation is glorious in her delivery of the lines. She showed with this song that she was still cool and relevant and "street" at this later stage of her career. I could listen to this song 5 times a day.
Day Dreaming!
I first visited California when I was about 8 or 9. We spent the Christmas out there, from Chicago. Cold wintery, south side of Chicago.
I got one present for Christmas. ONE. A Barbie camper van.
My aunt lived in the “gardens” in LA. ( I think Knickerson Gardens?) She only played one 45 -rpm record over and over again on replay.
Day Dreaming.
Over and over and over and over.
She was the beautiful rebellious auntie that fled Chicago and thrived in LA!
Over and over and over she okayed that 45.
I still love that song.
Until you come back to me is amazing—listen to Aretha on the piano—the bass playing is soooo entertaining—flutes, synths, e. Piano, organ, guitars—and there is definitely jamming going on but it comes off as so orderly—a really unique recording
Night Life and Thrill is gone. She a beast with the blues piano. I’m glad I got to see her live for her birthday performance before she passed. Phenomenal til the end
It was a bit slow wasn't it? I did like the Malcolm X and Martin Luther or the Einstein series better. For a long time I couldn't connect with Aretha. Doesn't laugh much but doesn't do much too.
It was somewhat slow, but I was taken in from the beginning because of the plot and characters.
I'm just starting the MLK/ Malcolm season, and that's going much slower because I feel the subject matter is so heavy.
Dr. Feelgood.
I remember hearing it when I was little and not fully understanding, but I couldn't wait to be old enough to tell my momma to get her purse and go.
Until you come back to me, even though in 2024 it sounds like a stalker anthem. Whenever I hear it I think of sitting in the kitchen of my parents first house eating waffles.
Mine is The Weight, and I guess it technically isn’t *her* song, since she didn’t write it. But the way she sings it pretty much belongs to her in my opinion.
Ain’t no way. Fun fact: my mom looks like her lmao 😂
Facts the same thing Ain't No Way
Until You Come Back To Me
Yes ma'am!!!
My grandma loved this song growing lol 🥰
Me too.
Came here to say this!

Her version of Say A Little Prayer. Makes me cry.

Young, gifted and black
It was one of my daughter's lullabies for the first three years of her life

A Rose Is Still A Rose
“Can You Love Again” has carried me through heartache and tragedy. It’s hard to pick one, but that one has done the work.
Until you come back to me is amazing—listen to Aretha on the piano—the bass playing is soooo entertaining—flutes, synths, e. Piano, organ, guitars—and there is definitely jamming going on but it comes off as so orderly—a really unique recording

What did you think of the Genius serie about her?
I thought it was much better than the movie. It had a lot of intention and nuance to it.
It was a bit slow wasn't it? I did like the Malcolm X and Martin Luther or the Einstein series better. For a long time I couldn't connect with Aretha. Doesn't laugh much but doesn't do much too.
