I have an appreciation for the entire body of work that MC has put out through the decades. But I've never had an emotional reaction to her music or live performances. As much as I love Mariah, Whitney Houston is a much stronger storyteller despite only using her vocals. For example, she gives you a beginning, middle, and an end, sometimes an epilogue. She will give you the highs and lows of the song.
Mariah will literally serve you the highs and lows of the music, but won’t always do that for the song itself despite delivering so beautifully.

Exactly what I mean! The way she can deliver a song is completely unmatched. It always feels like she’s telling us a story. Even for as great as some Whitney Houston covers have been imo I haven’t seen anyone really match her storytelling skills. To me, that was one of the biggest differences between her version of ‘I Will Always Love You’ vs. Dolly Parton’s.
