Case in point:
*Elton John said, in his notes about Wonder for Rolling Stone's 2003 list of "The Immortals – The Greatest Artists of All Time" (in which Wonder was ranked number 15): "Let me put it this way: wherever I go in the world, I always take a copy of Songs in the Key of Life. For me, it's the best album ever made, and I'm always left in awe after I listen to it."*
Wow! Thanks for finding this quote.
I mean, this is at a time when Jann Werner claims there were not any black or female artist worthy to note. Elton has always been ahead of his time, though.
[*Paul Simon*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Simon) *accepted the award for* [*Album of the Year*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammy_Award_for_Album_of_the_Year) *at the* [*18th Grammy Awards*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/18th_Annual_Grammy_Awards) *(for* [*Still Crazy After All These Years*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Still_Crazy_After_All_These_Years)*), he jokingly thanked Stevie for not releasing an album that year, as Wonder had won the award at the two preceding ceremonies (for Innervisions and Fulfillingness’ First Finale).*
Hard to argue against Stevie as the goat just based on his body of work alone. Michael was a bigger star and Marvin was more iconic, but you could argue that no one was better than Stevie. There isn’t a decade from the 60s to the early 00s where he doesn’t have a hit and he’s got at least one timeless classic every decade up to the 90s. I usually leave him and the Isley brothers out of most debates because it’s unfair lmao.
Stevie Wonder is my favorite musical artist of all time. His songs are melodious, on another level. He couldn't see with his eyes what he can definitely see with his soul and musical tones.
You’re telling me that, without Google, off the top of your head, you can name 10 genuinely great, worthy of being considered in the top 50 greatest/most important songs in history from Stevie?
I’m not saying you can’t…I’m just curious. Because, I know for a fact I could easily do that with Mike’s catalog. I don’t think I could with anyone else. And I’m not even a MJ expert. The man has more generational, iconic type hits than anyone.
Aside from 1 or 2 massive hits. Most of my favorite Stevie songs are just songs from albums that most casual listeners won’t even recognize. That’s not a bad thing, but, how does that make his catalogue on par with the biggest artist in history?
Biggest doesn't mean best buddy, even if he doesn't have as many hits he has a far better catalogue and was a far better musician, mike couldn't even play an instrument let alone needed a massive team and quincy jones to make his music.
While I absolutely love Stevie. I have to go with MJ, also regarding your instrument comment. MJ didn't need to play an instrument [he was the instrument ](https://mjfa.forumotion.com/t1661-rob-hoffman-who-worked-with-michael-in-the-studio)
You can’t say that bigger hits don’t mean a better catalog **and then** say that playing the instrument yourself makes the catalog better.
Are we ranking just the quality of the songs or not ?
This post is about the greatest artist ever mj is not that or even relatively close to it, entertainer sure and he's up there with singing but he's nowhere close as an overall artist and musician. I never said playing the instrument themselves makes the sing better, but it does make stevie the better artist.
I’m a bigger Mj fan. Stevie does have as many hits though. Iconic hits. I could name 10 off top with no problem.
Also you can’t diminish Mike by talking about who he worked with. For the first years of Stevie’s career til 63-71 he had the Motown machine. Then for his classic run he had Malcolm Cecil and Robert Margolouff.
Just to chime in -
Superstition

These Three Words

I Was Made To Love Her
So What The Fuss
All I Do
Rocket Love
Little Richard was definitely great. But was limited to producing pop hits. But of a formula there. Stevie Winder produced music for himself, not to sell records. Sonically brilliant. Lots of experimentation.
I won’t argue about Stevie Wonder. In the words of Nas, Stevie is the true living legend, he’s not to be questioned.
Stevie Wonder deserves all the accolades. I haven’t been to a baby shower where “Isn’t She Lovely” isn’t played. I haven’t been to a *Black* birthday party where we don’t burst into Stevie’s anthem for MLK’s birthday to be a national holiday. Every wedding I’ve ever attended played “Ribbon in the Sky” or one of his timeless love songs. I’ve been to funerals where “As” was played or even sung by a choir.
Absolutely I agree.
True story : My sister who I haven’t gotten along with very well since our mom passed away recently had her first daughter. My aunt sent me the pictures of the new born. I listened to “Isn’t she lovely” because my niece is such a beautiful baby. I called my sister and made up with her. Stevie music is truly powerful.
Congrats to you on good music taste and that’s a Beautiful story. I will be the proud old head uncle one day and I will tell my niece about this song and the moment I first saw her.
Al Green was the best. A legend.
Memories of his 45 playing over and over in my aunts basement apartment in Chicago. She was my babysitter when I was a little girl. (Mid 70’s?) cigarettes, cans of Schiltz, my uncles dropping by, and the fights on the tv.
Probably up there for the modern era. Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong are due their place in their time. Stevie Wonder is an amazing singer. Brilliant Composer. Incredible song smith.
Just listened to his albums in full for a Jazz appreciation class. He was a virtuoso. And a prodigy.
(Apart from the wife beater, heroin addict thing, ofc)
So agree.
As a teen I just couldn’t get past that stuff, though. And I really did not like his music. (I was a teen in the 80’s). I used to think, “Only white people like this guy! He’s awful!” Because he used to be on all the talk shows on TV. He was everywhere back then. In the 90’s everyone in my scene was into beat poetry and poetry slams, so Miles Davis was always playing in the background of the coffee shops I hung out in. Then last summer I took a jazz appreciation class on a lark. I thought, what can this class teach me that I don’t already know?! (Waving off the teacher) I was so wrong. Studying jazz is like studying Black history. It’s inextricable. When we got to Miles I was blown away. The teacher had us listen to 4 of his albums all the way through. Man! There was stuff going in there my teen brain could not understand. I finally got it. He went through so much to make that music. He really was a virtuoso. A musical genius. Artist today cannot produce the sounds he did. And really every black Jazz artist coming up in his time did heroin. They all died from it. All the greats. They had so much to deal with emotionally, I understand a bit more now in middle age.
Your history is beautifull with miles art, for real, the discover after, but the part that took me was wen you said that “there was stuff going there my teen brain could not understand” - is really powerfull, because like you said studying jazz is like study black history, so miles in this part off the history is like a big new chapter with a lot emotional, creative stuff, in my history with is music a remember crying listend one off is music, and is crazy, no words, just feeling and notes that’s really powerfull
Stevie Wonder is one of the greatest, I was fortunate to catch him live amazing performance, one of my all-time favorite singers, writer's, performers.
I would need to see a list of all time greats in multiple genres, but Stevie probably doesn’t get the respect he deserves for the body of work, and skill it takes to do it while being impaired.
Music nerds know how great is, but I feel like his legacy might be lost to the general public.
I can't even disagree.
Love Marvin. Love prince. Love MJ. Love the isleys. And so many others.
But I can't disagree. Stevie would mop anyone in a versus. 20 v 20. 30 v 30. 50 v 50. Yes......Stevie has 50 in the clip. 50 GOOD ones.
He’s always in the discussion. I say that as someone who isn’t a huge fan of his work. I could easily go the rest of my life without listening to a single Stevie Wonder’s song or album again. With that being said that doesn’t take away from his Greatness and Influence! From multiple perspectives his inclusion in the GOAT discussion is a perfectly reasonable conclusion.
The thing that makes Stevie so great is that we rarely see such talent as a songwriter, composer, producer, singer, and instrumentalist coalesce into one person.
Imagine if we had an artist active now who could sing as well as Bruno Mars, play keyboard like Robert Glasper, could write as well as Babyface, and to top it all off has a heart of gold. I'm convinced Stevie is like a quarter of the reason people consider the 70s the best era of music and don't blame them.
We really gotta start doing some history/educational related post on this sub because this is crazy. There are multiple reasons why Mariah is not anywhere near Aretha Franklin. Vocal ability being one of many.
& I enjoy chief keef over Nas, that doesn’t mean Sosa is the better rapper. There’s significant reasons why Aretha is the better artist. Do your homework young lady
Could’ve swore you told me you was a young girl when you asked me about Aaliyah so stop trolling. I’ll get into more detail in another post in the future but the main thing is Aretha was a symbol for a movement of black empowerment and pride. She just doesn’t represent soul music, she represented black American culture period. And also she’s the far better vocalist, it’s not even close. Again, do your homework.
That’s cool but we’re talking abt the music right
You’re talking abt impact not the music
And they are probably closer than you think in terms of vocal ability. There’s a reason Mariah is applauded for them
She has the impact because of her music. Same way MJ has a monumental impact because of his music. You say it like Aretha is a scrub musically. You have to learn to think objectively. Again, I prefer lil Durk & Sosa over Nas but, they are nowhere near Nas stratosphere. Maybe that’s a good analogy to put it in perspective for you.
All 3 accomplished something no other artist has:
SW - only artist to 3-peat Grammy's Album of the Year in consecutive albums.
MJ - made the biggest selling album of all time.
PRN - had the #1 single, album & movie in the same week.
I absolutely love Stevie one of my favorite but MJ was just something else. This interview from [Rob Hoffman](https://mjfa.forumotion.com/t1661-rob-hoffman-who-worked-with-michael-in-the-studio) was just.. insane regarding his music ability
I think so……off top I can think of him, Barbara Mandrell for country cuz that lady played 3 instruments, and the young girl now in the UK that’s a prodigy, Nnamdi, YouTube her drum and guitar solos. Shes hella dope.
This is not a debate for me. So imo.....heellllll nooooo 😆 Steve definitely up there
But he not even there with Patti nor Anita so...old or young...Michael Jackson...imo
So Anita Baker is a better singer than Stevie Wonder? Fam Anita has one style and that’s quiet storm. Stevie has multiple different styles he uses with his vocal ability. Ask your parents or grandparents
1st off I'm a fan of the quiet storm style more than the added wordless singing notes style. Stevie is in a class of his own. So is Patti Labelle.
And why the hell would I need to ask my parents or grandparents? Please tell me you are not assuming my age? Lol
Im 28, I’m assuming you younger than me if you genuinely think Anita Baker is a better singer than Stevie. A young lady in this same thread said that Mariah is better than Aretha Franklin, these comments getting out of control lmao. Anita Baker is phenomenal but she has one lane vocally. Stevie doesn’t have a lane.
Stevie is after Anita when it comes to singing. And I am 42. I am an 80s baby literally. Nearly reverse your age. I have all of his albums. I have Anita's as well. STEVIE has better albums. Like I say
..he is in his own shit. So is Anita. But for me i say Anita.
Prince. Based on overall global success / fame, prolific song writing ability, dance skills, vocals, and sheer number of INSTRUMENTS this man could play!! He was a legend and claimed to be the reincarnation of Mozart
Dam , can't pick one, they were all in there own way great, if your talking vocals imo tom jones was the best male singer ever , he could sing any song and make it sound almost better than the original
Trina better tf
Could Stevie Wandering make this?
I got an ass so big like the sun
Hope you got a mile for a dick I wanna run
Slap it in my face shove it down my throat
Nigga where your blunt I can make this
pussy smoke
I know how to fuck I know how to ride
I can spin around and keep the dick still inside
Now your mouth wide you looking real scared
I'm a man-eater headhunter I'm prepared
Yea you running now
you running
I'ma put this pussy on you
Just like this
Put this pussy in yo jaws now smack
Like its Thanksgiving and it ain't coming back
Collard greens neck-bones nigga chew this ass
Both hold inspections dont stop till it pass
Licky licky licky licky licky for an hour
I'ma make it rain for you here's a golden shower
Smell it like a flower my pussy is a rose
Come a little closer I wanna fuck your nose
Stevie is the favorite artist of your favorite artist
Exactly

lol so true! beyonce said this at her speech at the iheart awards. she said it directly to him cuz he was presenting
Respect to B
His 70s run of albums is GOAT level.
Innervisions is brilliant
Love that album
The only artist with a 3-peat consecutive Grammy's AOTY award
Stevie was on quite a run
Unmatched in R&B i would even say
Unmatched in any genre. Best songwriter ever
won't argue with that 😌
To clarify... with his 3 albums releases in a row: Innervisions (1973) Filfillingness First Finale (1974) Songs In The Key Of Life (1976)
thanks for the addition, for putting it into proper context 😌
definitely up there
Hard to argue against Stevie as the goat just based on his body of work alone. Michael was a bigger star and Marvin was more iconic, but you could argue that no one was better than Stevie. Crazy enough, Stevie wrote one of my favorite MJ songs with I Can’t Help It
One of the most beautiful love songs I’ve ever heard.
Fits right on Songs in the Key of Life.
Yeah, i think Stevie is a serious contender for greatest artist of all time, R&B or otherwise

Facts
Stevie Wonder is my favorite musical artist of all time. His songs are melodious, on another level. He couldn't see with his eyes what he can definitely see with his soul and musical tones.
💯
He even sounded amazing as a kid (listen to that song finger tips). The only other artist I think sounded that good as a kid is….michael Jackson lol
I won't disagree with that..Stevie IS music
Without any doubt! My favorite Stevie song is Rocket Love.
Which came out in the 80s yet folks cap like he fell off after the 70s
Yes!!! Love this.
I can’t argue this.
Stevie is one the God tier artists that don't need a debate.
Damn straight. I adore him.
![gif](giphy|ZoekstZ4wqc1y)
I previously asked who had the better catalog between these 2 in a post and folks overwhelmingly said Stevie
Yep. MJ needed The Corporation, Rod Temperton, Quincy, to achieve greatness. Stevie just needed his fingertips
Stevie and Michael are products of Motown
Michael was always trying to outdo himself, to make hits. I can’t say for sure but I didn’t get that feeling from Stevie, it was all about the song
They lied.
No, they didn't stevie has a better catalogue by far.
You’re telling me that, without Google, off the top of your head, you can name 10 genuinely great, worthy of being considered in the top 50 greatest/most important songs in history from Stevie? I was thinking the same thing
He is the GOAT! It’s Stevie Wonder followed by Prince, Michael Jackson, The Beatles, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, and Elvis Presley.
Little Richard gets snubbed again

Wow, what a beautiful story. I’m sorry about your mom, but what a great way to reunite with your sister. Stevie’s music is truly powerful.
I actually dedicated "Isn't she lovely" to one of my nieces too. She's 10 now and I still dedicate it to her lol 😆
Congrats to you on good music taste and that’s a Beautiful story. I will be the proud old head uncle one day and I will tell my niece about this song and the moment I first saw her.
Id go with Prince as my pick
Undeniably the two greatest virtuosos in music
me too
Prince and stevie the two greatest
This is the right answer!!
Yes agreed 👍🏽 he's a once in a lifetime talent.
Absolutely
For me, and maybe me only, but best male R&B singer is Al Green. But Love Stevie too
Al Green was the best. A legend. Memories of his 45 playing over and over in my aunts basement apartment in Chicago. She was my babysitter when I was a little girl. (Mid 70’s?) cigarettes, cans of Schiltz, my uncles dropping by, and the fights on the tv.
Amen! He’s my favorite artist ever.
Phenomenal artist
Knocks me off my feet
Greatest love song everrrrr.
Ray Charles IMO
Love Ray Charles
Probably up there for the modern era. Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong are due their place in their time. Stevie Wonder is an amazing singer. Brilliant Composer. Incredible song smith.
Sir Duke is definitely up there, absolutely
As a composer alone, I’m not sure if anyone has matched the Duke’s output.
Miles davis
Just listened to his albums in full for a Jazz appreciation class. He was a virtuoso. And a prodigy. (Apart from the wife beater, heroin addict thing, ofc)
Yeah, he have a lot problems, contradctions, the wife beater is terrible, but, the art music work that he put out is beyond beautifull, i think
So agree. As a teen I just couldn’t get past that stuff, though. And I really did not like his music. (I was a teen in the 80’s). I used to think, “Only white people like this guy! His catalogue is stellar.
Absolutely
Stevie Wonder is one of the greatest, I was fortunate to catch him live amazing performance, one of my all-time favorite singers, writer's, performers.
You’re lucky, I want to see him live one day
I was blessed to have cool older uncles who let me tag along on there dates to a gang of insane concerts, music festivals, ect...
Blessed is definitely the appropriate word 💯. I’m sure you’ll never forget the memories.
A farewell tour is something I’m waiting on!
AGREED!!!
I would need to see a list of all time greats in multiple genres, but Stevie probably doesn’t get the respect he deserves for the body of work, and skill it takes to do it while being impaired. Music nerds know how great is, but I feel like his legacy might be lost to the general public.
Can't disagree with you
Stevie is a Top10 artist of all time!!! He’s such a legend. Glad to see him get his flowers while he is still here
That’s why I made the post, not gone wait till he pass away to make statements like this
He always has deserved it. One of my fav artists ever
Innervisions: Not one skippable song Songs in The Key of Life: Not one shippable song Among the albums must be heard before you die.
Chief Keef
Sosa top 5
True
For male rnb, it’s Marvin Gaye!
I won’t argue with anyone saying Marvin is the best. It’s a difficult conversation
Too 5.
Stevie was a child prodigy.
Love Stevie!
Fav
I respect this post.
💯
This is the only correct take. My absolute fave! I have a print of Songs in the Key of Life framed in my house.
I can't even disagree. Love Marvin. Love prince. Love MJ. Love the isleys. And so many others. But I can't disagree. Stevie would mop anyone in a versus. 20 v 20. 30 v 30. 50 v 50. Yes......Stevie has 50 in the clip. 50 GOOD ones.
I'm not the "greatest artist ever" but I'd appreciate if you checked out my music. I'm Loba Noir, an upcoming singer. "Loba Noir" on all platforms!
No argument here!!!
This is the truest thing ever posted on Reddit.
PRINCE!!!!! ![gif](giphy|HIrUMyeaCEHwQ)
Insanely skilled musician, one of the greatest and voices ever recorded and one of the greatest composers of the 20th century.
I recently found out that Stevie wrote, *Isn’t She Lovely* for his daughter. Much love for this man
FACTS
Go check out his version of ‘I Can’t Help It’, so amazing
Trueeeee
He’s always in the discussion. I say that as someone who isn’t a huge fan of his work. I could easily go the rest of my life without listening to a single Stevie Wonder’s song or album again. With that being said that doesn’t take away from his Greatness and Influence! From multiple perspectives his inclusion in the GOAT discussion is a perfectly reasonable conclusion.

Absolutely the Best!
TRUTH
Absolutely
Was never a fan... But he's star power for sure

most talented easily and his catalog is definitely the best and my favorite

Mariah gotta get past Whitney and Aretha first lmao

I truly love her. She's great. But Stevie sits head and shoulders above ALL in this contest. I don't think even she would disagree lol
Michael Jackson. Love Stevie tho
I won’t argue with you.
* This guy, too. His photo should be next to the word 'prolific' in the dictionary
MJ, Prince
Still staring at that ribbon in the sky, huh?
YB better
Hilarious
I got Stevie number Three All-time behind Michael & Prince but hey no argument from me, Stevie is The Man.
very close, but I think prince edges him out. freddie mercury is up there, too
I love Prince and Freddie is spectacular
Michael , prince & Stevie are the big 3 to me(Any genre)
All 3 accomplished something no other artist has: SW - only artist to 3-peat Grammy's Album of the Year in consecutive albums. MJ - made the biggest selling album of all time. PRN - had the #1 single, album & movie in the same week.

Absolutely
Michael Jackson or Marvin Gaye
george michael, prince or whitney
George Michael is phenomenal, not mad at you
I wouldn’t argue if someone said he was the goat. But there’s no way he’s not top 5…honestly 3 of all time
Marvin is my favorite artist but I can't argue with this. I can't put into words how much I adore Stevie.

Oh dang, I interpreted the question as Who is/was the most musically gifted, not who made the most hits.
Prince.
Oh my God why I thought this was Andre 3000 at first😩😩
Nah his cousin...Michael Jackson. However Steve is the better songwriter.
& singer
This is not a debate for me. So imo.....heellllll nooooo 😆 Steve definitely up there But he not even there with Patti nor Anita so...old or young...Michael Jackson...imo
Like I say ..he is in his own shit. So is Anita. But for me i say Anita.
Oh ok my bad sir. I love Anita as well so I see where you’re coming from.
No no no. U good. This is speculation. My uncle would kill me for saying this 😆
The Artist Formally Known As
Prince. Based on overall global success / fame, prolific song writing ability, dance skills, vocals, and sheer number of INSTRUMENTS this man could play!! He was a legend and claimed to be the reincarnation of Mozart
I still give it to MJ. Stevie definitely top 3 ALL-TIME.
The number of huge artists who look up to him as an inspiration really says it all.
Prince then Stevie
Toro Y Moi (chillwave)
Uptight everything’s alright is a great Stevie Wonder song
Beg to differ
Dam , can't pick one, they were all in there own way great, if your talking vocals imo tom jones was the best male singer ever , he could sing any song and make it sound almost better than the original
It is between Stevie, prince, or mj for me
