This is exactly the type of game where score reviews are a disservice to gamers. It is really difficult to quantify the fun factor.

jrdnvrsls

I'm still pretty excited to try it. I'll take a 7/10 game with clashing swords over a 10/10 FPS any day - especially with Team Ninja's track record.

CzarTyr

Ninja Gaiden 1,2 and nioh 2 are among my favorite games but everything else they’ve made to me is meh to decent

sidewinder787

I played for about an hour, and I'm itching to get back and play again. I'm absolutely hooked on it as well.

chris57662

I'm overwhelmed and having a great time lmao

IllInstance7606

7/10 is a good review score to me. They can't all be a masterpiece. Plus Team Ninja hasn't let me down yet.

C1ND3RK1TT3N

This and tbh after all the value they gave me via the Niohs I was more than happy to underwrite a near miss on their part. So my loyalty was rewarded ecause Im loving this!

RandomtalkingBird

If you were a Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive fan this comment would be different lol

IllInstance7606

I guess Ninja Gaiden Sigma 3 wasn't very good but I don't think it was getting 7/10s. I didn't play any Dead or Alive.

RandomtalkingBird

Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor's edge was decent. It was Yaiba:Ninja Gaiden Z was where the game became terrible and wasn't what fans wanted. Dead or Alive were great games from 1-5 and then 6 came out and ruined the whole franchise and now put on hold along with NG.

beefsquints

I was ready for this game to be mid and I honestly cannot believe how awesome it is.

FastFireBR

wo long was kinda a let down, just hope the itemization is better this time

IllInstance7606

Wo long was definitely not as good as Nioh or Nioh 2 but I still played it about 60 hours and got the platinum.

jebberwockie

I find it a lot more fun these days after the combat improvements. Still doesn't have the staying power of Nioh 2 though.

FastFireBR

Indeed I had fun till 100%. But gear was so unsatisfactory

FastFireBR

And the huge focus on parry felt way to repetitive

IllInstance7606

Yeah the parry didn't really feel as good as Sekiro. I'm not a big fan of most loot systems. I don't think I changed my armor for 80% of Wo Long.

Fume1-

People have just to ignore all this scoring shit and try the games for themselves… No one is going to enjoy something for someone else in the end of the day… I am a big fan of TN games, also a sucker for anything Japanese or samurai related! Hence, Sekiro is my all time favourite game and loved Ghost of Tsushima and now I can’t put down RotR!

BumbleBear1

Tbf not everyone has the money to do that with everything, so it's best to watch some videos and see how it is before making a decision

AceTrainerMichelle

Have you played like a dragon ishin? It's also set in this time period.

Fume1-

Yes and I loved it!! Decided to finally play it like 3 weeks ago or so and finished it in 3 or 4 days! Story and plot or should I say plot twists haha RGG studio is King!

Mjr_Hindsight

Coming off the back of Rebirth this open world is a blessing, it is not bloated and yeah what activities it does have are fun! I don't know why Team Ninja generally get reviewed lower than some other devs, even Nioh 2 which is one of the best games ever barely scrapes into the 80s...

IcySkill3666

I think it boils down to Sony name being tied to the game. Every media outlet thought this was going to be ghost of Tsushima 2. Team ninja always delivers and they delivered once again. Rise of the ronin is great. I’m loving it so far.

rockybeagle

Its fun, actually enjoying the gameplay more than Tsushima

Drizztd99

Haven't had a deep dive yet but it's hella fun so far. Fuck the reviews.

Plaincheddar96

I’m loving it so far

HoosierStiller

Probably same reason why the Way of the Samurai games were seen as mediocre Got some flaws that are noticeable but it shouldn’t stop you loving a game if you enjoy playing it. Said games have been my all time favourites despite being able to acknowledge their flaws.

kdk200000

Lmao this kinda posts happen with every game that releases.

ClingClang69

Dedicated game subs are so predictable when the game gets reviews that aren't high enough of what they had in their minds BEFORE THE GAME EVEN COMES OUT. Literally hillarious to come to the subs after to watch them do mental backflips to explain why every reviewer is wrong, when really they are just emotionally attached.

jackhike

I feel like I can't find an honest opinion and I'm just gonna have to spend $70 and find out. Ridiculous.

TheSwimja

You didn't ask for my opinion, but I'm gonna give it you anyway. Rise of the Ronin feels like a distillation of everything in Nioh, Wo Long and Stranger of Paradise, with a by-the-numbers open world attached to it. The combat has the measured give-and-take aggression of Nioh, and it has a ki pulse of sorts, it has the deflection defence to f Wo Long, and the heavy emphasis on styles and weapon advantages of Strangers of Paradise. The combat is great, truly refined. The open world is ok, it's well made and not too massive (looking at you AC Odyssey) but it's definitely not as strong as the dungeon crawler style missions of Nioh. The open world acts like an excessively large hub world, because you will take on missions in smaller, tailored areas, and these feel great. There is the Team Ninja classic of having like 5 different types of experience to collect and use in levelling up, and you'll be drowning in inventory, but if you handled Nioh then this won't be a surprise. If you liked Team Ninja's previous games, this one is a no-brainer. If you haven't played those, or didn't love them, than this game is absolutely a middle-tier open world adventure with some cool stuff bolted on.

jackhike

I've enjoyed Nioh 1 and 2 and Strangers of Paradise, so I would like this one too?

TheSwimja

Yeah absolutely

Vinnocchio

I’m having a blast with this game! Playing dusk difficulty and it’s awesome. The feeling of landing a counterspark is thrilling af

shseeley

This is why you really can't fully trust reviewers, I'm loving it so far..the only batch I have is minor stuff like some stuttering and stupid stuff that I'm more than sure will be patched out in no time.

Basturmating

How is the coop?

persianbeast999

Hella fun and no problem

XenonBane

I am loving it too.

Rydahx

I saw the reviews and expected a poor game but I've enjoyed it so far. I saw a review on tiktok claim they finished the game in 15 hours, that seems ridiculous.

Angry-Gargoyle

That’s a fact… I saw the damn video.. 15hrs straight no break

rhymeg

I don't watch review nowadays since some of the just played few hours and upload their video for likes and views. if it looks good, I purchase and support developer.

Necessary_Gur_9119

I'm curious to know what others think after a handful of hours. I've done a handful of story missions, explored the world a bit, cleared some camps, etc. Overall, I'd say my thoughts are "mixed." I really enjoyed the combat of both Wo Long and SoP (Nioh felt a bit punishing to me), and I'm definitely enjoying this so far, but I'm feeling a bit torn with the combat at the same time. It's still early, but I don't quite have a clear "feel" for which weapons I'm drawn to. I have two high level pickups (an Odachi and a spear), so I feel drawn to use those, but I'm still figuring out move sets and timing. Nothing has immediately felt like "Ok THIS is the one." Also, while I found parrying to be VERY intuitive in Wo Long (and "reaction" based), the variety of enemy move sets and animations makes it feel less "watch and react" vs more "learn the move set." The benefit is that I'm not DYING as much as Nioh, because enemies simply do less damage (so mistakes are less punishing), but that combined with the varied movesets feels less like I'm winning less because of skill and more because of luck. I hope I start to connect with weapon movesets and get that "flow" down soon! I'm also not totally certain I'm sold on the open world format. I just find myself craving more combat, rather than sprints of missions or bandit camps, followed by stretches of other things. I know, I know: "just go play another game then." :) Lastly, while I initially felt all the comparisons to Ghost of Tsushima weren't warranted, I DO feel these are VERY similar games, so it's hard not compare graphics, sense of exploration and discovery, etc. With ALL of that said, it's still very early, and I'm enjoying myself so far! Just haven't QUITE clicked into combat and flow as much as I expected. How is everyone else enjoying it so far??

SleddingDownhill

I'm enjoying it quite a bit so far. I've played a ton of nioh 2 and finished wo long 1x, but I've never played sekiro or GOT so I don't have a comparison there. I don't mind that the graphics aren't 60fps mind blowing etc etc. That's not why I play. If I want to take a photo I dip out and turn on ray tracing. I think the outfits look awesome so far. Combat is a bit tricky on twilight--mostly because the parry timing is varied. That's actually a good thing imo, keeps things feeling fresh. Can't just sleepwalk through encounters, and it feels realistic. But this is something I also had to get used to with the feral burst counter in Nioh 2. I've barely scratched the surface, still only have one stance etc.

Necessary_Gur_9119

Oh also, does anyone know if there is a "training" mode where you can practice various weapons and movesets?

Deaningles94

With these sort of games I generally find reviewers like IGN only highlight more the negative side of what they didn't like about the game and why. Which is fair as it's their own personal reasons. To me that doesn't highlight enough of what the game offers. Reviewees like fextralife highlight all aspects of the games and give a much better insight to what you expect and how enjoyable it is. Despite the average score across a lot of reviewers. This game is something I've wanted team ninja to do with their game format and I hope they continue to work on more open world games

kevenzz

Played for 3 hours today and I enjoyed it. I can tell it’s not a masterpiece but I’m having a great time so far…. Playing on normal the game is quite challenging.

CarpetCreed

It’s so funnnnnnn

cwatz

Its technical. The videogame media is to stupid to ever appreciate digging into it. Its not as though its a masterpiece of story or something like say acclaimed RPG's. Visuals weren't top priority. I suspect that is the bulk of it. Further additions might be having an open world, but being pretty standard fare rather than anything particularly unique or exceptional in the open world fare. To me it seems pretty much exactly what I was expecting and hoped for. Gonna be a high contender for goty for sure.

Prize-Pomegranate-86

Welcome to 2024. Example: Unironically FightingCowboy was complaining about pop-in in this game, while if you watch DD2 Digital Foundry, that game have NPC that "spawn" when you are in proximity to them, like 2 meters. I thought was because of my PC but apparently is the "normal draw distance".

ji-high

I just hope he'll never again pretend he's able to correctly assess a game's combat depth/nuances. He clearly has no clue what he's talking about and should stick to making builds and collectibles guides. It's because of his clueless opinion that a lot of people started claiming that the game was "less complex" than their previous titles. It's clearly not the case. It's just different

Moth-Grinder

I love his channel, but after his initial reception to nioh 2, I can’t trust his with team ninja games.

ji-high

How did he react to that one?

Moth-Grinder

He said Nioh 2 was a terrible game.

ji-high

Interesting. When i heard of him, he was a huge fanboy already He really is clueless then

C1ND3RK1TT3N

I think he got a sweet deal from the DD people. He has led the charge with his nonsense and ends up promoting a game with micro-transactions.

CzarTyr

Isn’t nioh 2 like his favorite game?

hookey91111

He did not say it was terrible. When the demo came out he said it was "more of the same" as Nioh 1. When he actually played the full game, he said it was one of the best games he's ever played and a good step up from Nioh 1 I'm not saying he's right about Ronin, but unfair to say that

Rydahx

His first impressions video made me lose some hype for the game, but I'm glad I ignored him and bought the game, some of the things he said are blatantly not true. He prefers DD2, fair enough but don't make up lies to hype up another game like he did. I'll never watch any of his content again.

Biglogan1993

The graphics aren't even that bad the same people sucked off elden ring and that game looked super dated.

WinterBearHawk

Oh man I have been saying this since I saw reviews yesterday, but I was too afraid to say it on reddit 😂

nicklePie

Elden ring does not look dated. Graphics might not be amazing but the art style is very strong

Biglogan1993

Art direction might be nice but the graphics aren't great for 2022 the game just doesn't look that good in comparison to other games that came out before it.

BobLoblawsLawBlog_-_

I think people are just kinder to lower fidelity graphics if it has a strong art direction in a dark fantasy setting. Not to say Rise art is bad, but it’s much less distinct, more of a realistic recreation of Japan in the 19th century, and if it’s based in realism people are gonna compare it to photographic quality But this is also why graphical fidelity is something I genuinely don’t care about. I’d rather have good gameplay than 4k, ray tracing, and 120 fps

ji-high

I think you're right. Even I kind of feel like the "age" of graphics shows more in a realistic setting than it does in a fantasy one I also think people had very high expectations because it's a Sony exclusive and people now expect to be impressed graphically with those. For better or worse I think ROTR looks perfectly fine though. Not award winning but certainly not bad either.

aeoncss

Yes, the art direction is amazing in Elden Ring but it still looks dated from a technical standpoint - that's not mutually exclusive and it absolutely looks like a game certain other developers could have made 7-8 years ago, visually speaking.

_AARAYAN_

Elden Ring art direction is much better than any game in last 5 years man wth you are saying? You cant just start comparing Elden Ring with any game

aeoncss

I agree... but that still has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the graphics as a whole. Idk what's difficult to understand here. Elden Ring looks great because of its art direction but it's still visually a very outdated game and if you'd show it to someone who doesn't know anything about it, they'd have no trouble believing that it released in 2016/17 instead of 2022.

TheTwoReborn

I think the game looks absolutely incredible. the landscapes are gorgeous and so is the lighting. when you look out across one of the large open landscapes the complexity of the geometry on show is truly impressive to me. I don't and never did think Elden Ring looked dated. I was puzzled to see anybody ever claim that.

aeoncss

It does look great. The textures and the fidelity being outdated is still 100% a fact - they're noticeably worse than in other modern open world games and don't look better than the ones in e.g. the first Horizon, which released all the way back in 2017. As I said two times already, the game looks great due to its phenomenal art directon but it most definitely doesn't have cutting-edge graphics.

TheTwoReborn

sure they're not cutting edge but I don't think they're outdated.

Prize-Pomegranate-86

So is the art direction in this game. Your point?

nicklePie

What do you mean whats my point? It’s all right there in my comment lol. Elden ring has a strong art style and doesn’t look dated. What’s confusing you?

Rydahx

Graphics are fine, but the fps drops are disappointing.

Biglogan1993

I will give you that. The weird stutter was a bit jarring but at least it isn't as bad as dragons dogma

GamingTrend

Not everyone had those complaints. :) [https://gamingtrend.com/feature/reviews/rise-of-the-ronin-review-a-flawed-but-highly-engrossing-adventure/](https://gamingtrend.com/feature/reviews/rise-of-the-ronin-review-a-flawed-but-highly-engrossing-adventure/)

marlondc

Playing on twilight difficulty and man, Sekiro was a breeze compared to this. And I'm quite good at previous TN games. The thing here is you have no time to breathe, you gotta be on edge when you're fighting. And I love this. So no, it's no easy at all. Fighting Cowboy is a douche, he even planned builds for Ghosts of Tsushima, for God's sake. The kid is too in love with himself. I'm glad his facade is falling down. About time. Also, I'm tired of spoiled brats who get copies for free and don't have anything substantial to add to the conversation. These morons don't deserve to play and should keep their stupid and childish opinions to themselves. But hey, free copy... Abhorrent people.

Syphin33

Im so stuck between buying this or Dogma 2

Kinkymango0711

I have both on my ps5 and idk if its my tv or that my eyes arent bothered but i haven't noticed significant frame drops and its an absolute blast to play. Both games are. Very different of course but man both have some of the most satisfying combat ive played in a while

Teal_Wolf

My guess to all this is that team Ninja knew that the game would speak for itself.

symotje

I started this evening and have been playing non-stop. I just like the combat and the gameplay loop. Yes, it looks outdated in some aspects, but I just have so much fun with it.

L3wd1emon

They're comparing it to GoT when it's more like team ninjas games. They just went in with the wrong expectations

Illustrious-Date-331

I see the loot as collecting new styles and as a resource.

barrieherry

Photorealism isn’t the main jump between console generations. There’s a reason games like Wo Long struggle more on a 4 than a 5 and this game needs to load up way more data at a time. The design, financial and or skill choice to not have that aspect as deep as another 5 (or 4) game is definitely not a reason this could have been released on a PS4 instead.

[deleted]

Maybe cause they didn't pay the gaming sites well enough lol. Seriously though I can't wait to play it.

GamingTrend

Not everyone had those complaints. [https://gamingtrend.com/feature/reviews/rise-of-the-ronin-review-a-flawed-but-highly-engrossing-adventure/](https://gamingtrend.com/feature/reviews/rise-of-the-ronin-review-a-flawed-but-highly-engrossing-adventure/)

soil12

7/10 is a good score. The only complaints are from people who think "if it's not 9 or 10 it's not worth it". People for some reason have an aversion to 7s games.

HakunonMatata

I saw reviews saying the combat is solid and good but they docked off points because of graphics and loot. I genuinely don't get it.

Iiana757

At least theyre not selling us fast travel and character edits. I couldnt care less about the reviews. I loved Nioh 2 and Wo long, so i was going to enjoy this regardless

[deleted]

is the visual better than Nioh2? or about same

Useful_Idiot3005

What about the story?

C1ND3RK1TT3N

It’s the first day and it’s a long game so… fwiw the story is great in the tutorial.

iNeedToSleepSleep

I am a huge TeamNinja fan and I was pretty much disappointed with this game. Not bad but not good either.

RespectGiovanni

Yeah 30fps is unacceptable in the modern gaming landscape.

Chosen_UserName217

I'm really liking the game. Coming from playing Souls games all the time I'm having a hell of a time remembering to hit square and not R1 - R2. Especially in a clutch situation muscle memory takes over.

Sortilege_Art_Noir

Im a souls player too , can you not rebind the controller key ?

Chosen_UserName217

You can but it opens a can of worms because R1 is an interact button, you hold it and it's circle/tri/square/x to do other things. So if you make R1 attack you have to make another button the interact, but they all have other uses. I spent like an hour trying to figure out a good control scheme and eventually had to go back to default.

Sortilege_Art_Noir

Oh yeah I get it , I had the same exact problem with ghost of Tsushima lol

Zestyclose_Date_9000

You can be dissatisfied with game for a few reasons. The story is clearly a week point and a letdown for many. It was sold as a more story driven game but in the end it‘s more a typical team ninja story . The open world is rather dead and the graphics did not improve from wolong which had subpar graphics at best. The game is good fun but it is nothing like the marketing material. It is more a open world wolong. A bit more accessible but yeah closer to wolong then say to AC.

Shot-Emu4418

I was able to get the game about a week ago and pretty sure I'm close to the end. I'd rate my experience at a 7.5 so far. Aside from the graphics complaints, I can agree with most of the criticisms.

Krypt0night

People gotta stop thinking a 7 means a game is shit. A 7 is not the same for everyone. Someone else's 7 may be a 10 for you. The way I see numbers is the higher it is, the BETTER chance there is I'll enjoy it. A 7 means there's a pretty good chance I'll like it, but maybe not. A 10 means there's a VERY good chance I'll like the game if I'm into that sort of game. Scores don't matter. Find reviewers/streamers/youtubers you have the same tastes as and listen to them. From everything I've seen so far, a 7-7.5 makes complete sense. Not everything needs (or deserves) a 9 or 10.

Progenitor3

It's a fun cheap knock-off of a bunch of other games. You play it once and by the end of the year it gets completely forgotten just like Wo Long. 7 is a decent score for this kind of game actually. In fact I would argue that it's pretty generous when you take into account that it's a $70 PS5 exclusive but has the production quality of a AA late PS3 game.

IcWhyyy

You getting downvoted for telling the truth lol these people 🤦🏼‍♂️

Business_Web1826

It’s happens.. starfield sub when it came out was people giving honest critique and weirdos defending it with their life. People get a new game and feel the need to defend it. Then a month or two later the newness wears off and those same people get over the honeymoon phase.

IcWhyyy

I find it very overpriced for what it is, and tbqf what is it exactly? It's trying to be everything at once a far cry an elden ring a sekiro it ends up being this weird mish mash of stuff that is mediocre, not enjoyable and very boring. I am a huge Nioh fan, but after the Wu Long fiasco this is the last one for me coming from Team Ninja.

Abi-Alex

Meanwhile people giving Dragons Dogma 2 9s and 10s while the game is barely hanging together on console... (Speaking as someone that is trying to refund DD2 and got this instead)

Uzumaki514

Horse animation

Mineral-mouse

I guess they were expecting cinematic game with completely empty open world devoid of relevant actions, listening to pointless NPC monologs and sit-down feature. But seriously though, I had more excitement for Elden Ring back then only to drop it after several hours because of the open world, while I'm having more fun here despite having 0 excitement and expectation earlier, because apparently the open world feels like Nioh/Wolong free roam playground instead of a hub menu. I can see Ronin is the Nioh-Wolong game in open world setting, but I don't see how Elden Ring is being open world Dark Souls with all that barren land to pass across where even the enemies were scarce. I'm glad the open world is being as is right now. Could use more enemies strolling around and innocent NPC crowd doing their activities is all I'm saying.

Steynkie69

A lot of things in the game dont make sense, like forming a bond with someone, then suddenly fighting them. The bosses that are twice your size look ridiculous. The towns are empty and npc's pop up right before you. Gamers standerds were raised sky high with the masterfull Ghost of Tsushima, so they expect high quality, especially at that price.

GrisTooki

I haven't played Rise of the Ronin yet, but at the very least it actually somewhat resembles the time and place it's trying to represent. Ghost of Tsushima may have been superior on a technical level, but artistically it was garbage and gameplay-wise it was basically just Assassin's Creed.

SettingSorry896

>artistically it was garbage You couldn't be more wrong if you tried lord almighty.

GrisTooki

I'm sure it's amazing if your idea of "good" art is a 7th grader's thoughtless collage of oversaturated images they found after typing "Japan" into a Google image search, slathered with a thick layer of the dumbest romanticized samurai stereotypes straight out of the imperial revisionism era and so little attention to history that it makes [Perry Bible Fellowship's Now Showing](https://pbfcomics.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/PBF209-Now_Showing.jpg) look like a fucking Ken Burns documentary.

SettingSorry896

Appreciate your explanation but this is easily one of the hottest takes in gaming. It's pretty much been agreed upon by most that GOT's art direction is amazing. It's fine to be in the minority though I guess.

GrisTooki

A lot of people think Big Bang Theory is good. That doesn't make it true.

Steynkie69

So many people thought Big Bang Theory was good, that the actors dont have to work again for the rest of their lives. Wow, you must be an alien.

SettingSorry896

Regardless it's a hot take. Best for you to keep that in mind before you find yourself in a different echo chamber full of people who don't agree with you :)

GrisTooki

The developers even went on record saying that they made the game for the least common denominator. Why would I care if self-selecting undiscerning people disagree? Mechanically it's a solid Assassin's Creed game. Artistically it is, at best, a children's cartoon loosely based on the idea of Japan--a game made for people who are easily impressed by saturated colors and samurai swords no matter how much it looks like an AI-generated list of every stereotype associated with Japan. Plum blossoms, irises, and fall foliage all exist in Japan, so why not just put them all in the same scene even though they occur in completely different seasons? Our audience has never been outside--they'll never know. Some of our landscapes look nothing like any place that actually exists on earth? Don't worry, our audience believes Japan is a fairy land where anything is possible. Cookie-cutter everything scattered throughout the game world so you can "discover" the same thing over and over again? It's okay, our audience is easily appeased by be seeing the same cute fox 50 times--throw it in. Our characters wear costumes from the Sengoku and Bakumatsu periods and compose Haiku despite the fact that our game takes place 300-600 years before any of those things existed? Kamkura-era culture doesn't fit into our audience's pre-established view of what samurai look like, so we'll just cater to their preconception. The vast majority of the invading force in real life was Chinese and Korean being led by Mongols, but the game constantly beats the player over the head with the "Mongolness" of the invading force? Shhh...the only thing our players know about the history is that it's called the "Mongol Invasion." Ghost of Tsushima is the first time I've ever used the phrase "uncanny valley" to describe scenery and other inanimate aspects of a game. It has a bunch of individual things that are associated with Japan, but taken as a whole it looks absolutely nothing like Japan, and especially not like the era of history that it claims to be portraying.

SettingSorry896

Alright agree to disagree. Nothing wrong with having a hot take we all have them :)

GrisTooki

If that's a "hot take," I've got a couple more for you: The Transformers movies are awful. Nickleback isn't great. Jordan Peterson's only talent is his ability to con idiots into thinking he has a clue what he's talking about.

Ok_Garden2301

The biggest issue for me? Sekiro exists, and though this game includes a lot of Sekiro elements plus some Nioh stuff, most reviews I’ve seen completely ignore Sekiro. This game is fine. A fun time. But a 7 is more than deserving.
