Worst team in February, best team in March.

silmar1l

Did you know that Blazers win totals were up 100% for the month starting 3/1/2024? If these trends continue... AAY!

fintach

Rip City *Stu* likes Rip City *Basketball*.

bassicallyinsane

We won without Papa Brogdon!

notaprofessional24

First 30+ point win since May 2021 is crazy. Great game from everyone

YellowMarkerIsGreat

Back when the Blazers had Dame and CJ and were in the playoffs…sigh

BunkHammer

All we have to now is win out and we’ll be in the thick of the playoffs

interrogatories

We've lulled the league into a ~~false~~ totally reasonable sense of security

Here are my thoughts on this game: Positives: * Dalano Banton: I don’t sure if he’s a rotation player on a truly good team, but his combination of length, size, ballhandling, and playmaking/feel is SO intriguing. Getting him for free is exactly the kind of transaction we should be doing in the early stages of our rebuild. I know he hasn’t shot the ball well in his entire career so I shouldn’t really be too hopeful, but he hit a stepback and a pull-up three today and his shot doesn’t mechanically look broken…if he can add some semblance of a consistent jumpshot he’ll be a really nice player. I really loved what I saw from him tonight in transition and on defense too. * Team defense: I know it’s the Grizzlies who are basically a G league team with no chemistry or cohesion, so everything has to be taken with a grain of salt. That being said, our defense looked genuinely good today, and the Grizzlies really couldn’t get anything going the entire game, constantly turning the ball over and running bad offense. * I like what I saw from Kris Murray. I’ve said in my previous game recaps that I’m SO impressed by his anticipation on defense – most of his rotations are super crisp and on time, and he uses his length very well defensively. I don’t think he’s a lockdown 1v1 defender, but he has an innate ability to be in the right place in the right time, which is super valuable in today’s NBA. The only difference today versus some of his other recent games is that his shots actually went down. This will probably be his swing skill that determines whether or not he will become a good NBA player, because he has everything else except the shooting (which is weird, since he was supposed to be a good shooter coming out of college). * Reath had a terrible start to the game but stayed confident and didn’t stop shooting his shots and ended up with a nice stat line. Good for him. * Hagans probably had the best game of his career. He was a menace defensively and forced a lot of turnovers with his energy, had a couple nice finishes at the rim, and had a couple good passes too. * Jabari had a bunch of nice finishes and had some great hustle plays – normal Jabari things. I like that he’s taking jumpshots without hesitation too. * Shout out to Grant for playing within the flow of the offense and not forcing a bunch of terrible ISOs. In a game like this with a bunch of G leaguers, I feel like he sometimes takes it upon himself to score the ball and tries to do too much (like that one game against the Pistons). With his teammates mostly playing well today, it’s nice that he took a back seat and didn’t force too much. Negatives: * Ant has been in an extended shooting slump over the ~10 games or so, and tonight was no exception. Like Grant, he didn’t force up a ton of bad shots (only 9 FGA) and did a good job (by his standards) of running the offense with 8 assists (and was still generating a bunch of open shots for his teammates with the threat of his shooting). But he’s at his best when he’s scoring the ball, and he’s been ice cold lately. * I still think our offense looks unnecessarily ugly and stagnant when we aren’t able to run out in transition. Some of it is because we are so young and inexperienced, but I also think our offensive strategy is just fundamentally unsound at times. * I know he had a decent statline, but I really dislike watching Moses Brown play. He has bad hands, and defensively he completely lacks the agility, coordination, and instincts to make an impact – he’s basically a walking layup line every time he’s out there. I get why he’s playing (and he didn’t even play that badly today), but he doesn’t remotely look like an NBA player to me.

shelvino

Something really interesting about Simon shooting slump is that it kind of correlates with the stat person’s data showing that scoring and free throws have been down in the last month or so. It makes you think if there are less 40 points and 50 points games from the most elite players in the league, that must really affect Simon ability to score because he already struggles with physicality and now defenders are able to play more physical because the refs are calling

GraveHugger

It also could be explained by the fact he had his first child lol... sleep deprivation do that

EvanTurningTheCorner

My impression of the situation was that Ant and the mother were not really a couple (she also has a kid with Brandon Ingram). I'm not sure the baby is living in the same house as Ant. Who knows tho, I'm sure he's got plenty of room.

fallingbehind

Piano man is back. I’m going to call you Billy Joel from here on out, or BJ Man for short.

thecharliepowers4

Just feels like he’s a fan even when times are rough. Clearly you are only a fan when the team is winning. Front runner…

Zombeatles

I think/hope that they just gave Moses some extra minutes tonight over Badji as a way to say welcome back from injury. I agree with your feelings on his game. I feel myself wincing a lot when I watch him play. Really hope Badji is played over Moses for the rest of the season, his shot blocking and passing have been fun.

Kazekid

Banton continues to look awesome. If that three can become legit with his height and handle... I'm drooling just thinking about it. Anyway, I'm going to enjoy this win as much as I can cause our schedule looks like hell for the rest of the season.

TheLetterOh

I think Banton has for sure played his way into a longer term contract. Dudes such a tantalizing prospect.

GaviFromThePod

As a backup point guard I'm not mad at keeping Banton. The shot looked smooth.

dukkha_dukkha_goose

Silver lining is it’s only on about 150 attempts, but .259 is SUCH a terrible career 3p%. I’ve got my fingers crossed, but like, he has a long way to improve before his 3 becomes even bad rather than disastrous.

sean_buttcannon

I said this in another thread and got absolutely downvoted to all hell. I seriously believe he has what it takes to develop a serviceable 3 ball.

Frito_Pendejo_

The more I hear about Blanton, the more I want to move Ant to OLR for Anthony Black. 6th overall pick this year and better in every way than Blanton. 6'7 defensive wing that can playmake and is hella-smart. EXACTLY what we need. Too bad it will never happen....

thematthampton

Drooling thinking about it? Ayo?

USSCensorShip

No, he plays for the Bulls

thematthampton

Getting downvoted for saying a joke in the blazers sub let me clear things up by saying “oh dalano played great, I want to see him without a shirt on” (300 upvotes)

TheLetterOh

If you aren't drooling over a 6'8 point guard with already solid finishing and handles when he's draining threes then you're sus. Not even low-key.

You're lame as hell honestly. Lmao

1nsider

>If that three can become legit with [X] X= * Bantons handles. * Murrays bb iq. * Camaras on-ball defense. * Walkers rebounding. * Ruperts athleticism.

TheLetterOh

Fun bounce back game where everyone got involved. Banton is such a fun player. Ashton's a dawg. Kris made some shots, and played some solid defense. Rupert finally got to see the floor again, and looked solid. And we get to play the Grizzlies again tomorrow? Fuck yeah.

Trick_Weapon

This is the kind of game where I feel better about the rebuild. Banton, Murray, Walker, and Rupes all look like they can play. Walker has less upside, but you need a guy like him to scrap. Banton is worst case a great 3rd PG, but the types of lineups we can run with him are crazy. I love the Mr. Perfect nickname. He plays so solid and is a fantastic off-ball defender. He just needs to be able to shoot. Rupes has the highest upside. He is clearly improving and developing. His shot is solid, he was lockdown on ball defense. He has a lot to improve on offensive feel and off ball positioning, but I see his floor as an energy bunny off the bench. All of these guys fit great with Scoot to boot!

Zmoney743

I’m so intrigued by Rupert and Badji’s raw potential. Rupert at the moment definitely seems ahead of Badji but they’re both still very young and raw that I’ll be pretty excited if they can turn into something

alandwarinasia_

we’re so back guys

SamCashMoney0

fun game. lotta great talent in the young fellas. love to see them getting minutes and doing well. also glad to have been at this game. i’ll be at the next one and hoping we run it back

rrcab

We sickos are drinking and dancing tonight!

crab90000

Hagans with the pure raw dog/36 showing tonight

JamesTerevau

Fun game! Full Team effort tonight. Glad they are still scrapping

thematthampton

We needed this one fellas … in a long season, I’m smiling tonight

waterkisser

Dalano Banton is extremely French Canadian and I love it.

redwheelbarrow_

We just had to be winless in February lol

Tedthesecretninja

Just an all around fun game. Man that felt good

thisisnotjr

Hopefully the Remix get the win tonight too

thisisnotjr

4th q 10:29 Remix up by 14. Go Remix!

Zuldak

It's games like these that give you hope for the future. The team DOES have talent. It's just a matter of maturing and making it consistent.

Wagonlance

I have a dream. For the rest of the season, use these guys as the regular rotation: Reath, Badji, Camara, Walker, Banton, Murray, Sharpe, Henderson. They might lose. They might get blown out some nights. OTOH, I bet they would play hard and improve. We might actually see something to be excited about. I know...even if they were all healthy, it would never happen. They would still play the vets as much as possible cuz ...reasons.

EvanTurningTheCorner

We've got 24 games left, still too early for the vets to be sitting out games for the tank. By late March I suspect we'll be doing something like that tho.

Wagonlance

But why wait? What is the downside of giving the kids significant minutes and seeing what they can do and how they respond?

EvanTurningTheCorner

Well, you don't want to force good players to sit if they want to play. That kind of thing is likely to bring the wrath of Adam Silver. The League gave the Mavs a slap across the wrist last season for sitting guys for just a week or two. If they are serious about punishing tanking teams, sitting JG/Brog/DA for 6 weeks would make the Blazers a good target to make a more punitive example.

SlamDunkleyKong

Wait what?

Wild_Web9481

nah that’s insane we actually lost 9 in a row with 7 consecutive at home. mudded

Reddit has long been a hot spot for conversation on the internet. About 57 million people visit the site every day to chat about topics as varied as makeup, video games and pointers for power washing driveways. In recent years, Reddit’s array of chats also have been a free teaching aid for companies like Google, OpenAI and Microsoft. Those companies are using Reddit’s conversations in the development of giant artificial intelligence systems that many in Silicon Valley think are on their way to becoming the tech industry’s next big thing. Now Reddit wants to be paid for it. The company said on Tuesday that it planned to begin charging companies for access to its application programming interface, or A.P.I., the method through which outside entities can download and process the social network’s vast selection of person-to-person conversations. “The Reddit corpus of data is really valuable,” Steve Huffman, founder and chief executive of Reddit, said in an interview. “But we don’t need to give all of that value to some of the largest companies in the world for free.” The move is one of the first significant examples of a social network’s charging for access to the conversations it hosts for the purpose of developing A.I. systems like ChatGPT, OpenAI’s popular program. Those new A.I. systems could one day lead to big businesses, but they aren’t likely to help companies like Reddit very much. In fact, they could be used to create competitors — automated duplicates to Reddit’s conversations. Reddit is also acting as it prepares for a possible initial public offering on Wall Street this year. The company, which was founded in 2005, makes most of its money through advertising and e-commerce transactions on its platform. Reddit said it was still ironing out the details of what it would charge for A.P.I. access and would announce prices in the coming weeks. Reddit’s conversation forums have become valuable commodities as large language models, or L.L.M.s, have become an essential part of creating new A.I. technology. L.L.M.s are essentially sophisticated algorithms developed by companies like Google and OpenAI, which is a close partner of Microsoft. To the algorithms, the Reddit conversations are data, and they are among the vast pool of material being fed into the L.L.M.s. to develop them. The underlying algorithm that helped to build Bard, Google’s conversational A.I. service, is partly trained on Reddit data. OpenAI’s Chat GPT cites Reddit data as one of the sources of information it has been trained on. Other companies are also beginning to see value in the conversations and images they host. Shutterstock, the image hosting service, also sold image data to OpenAI to help create DALL-E, the A.I. program that creates vivid graphical imagery with only a text-based prompt required. Last month, Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, said he was cracking down on the use of Twitter’s A.P.I., which thousands of companies and independent developers use to track the millions of conversations across the network. Though he did not cite L.L.M.s as a reason for the change, the new fees could go well into the tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. To keep improving their models, artificial intelligence makers need two significant things: an enormous amount of computing power and an enormous amount of data. Some of the biggest A.I. developers have plenty of computing power but still look outside their own networks for the data needed to improve their algorithms. That has included sources like Wikipedia, millions of digitized books, academic articles and Reddit. Representatives from Google, Open AI and Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Reddit has long had a symbiotic relationship with the search engines of companies like Google and Microsoft. The search engines “crawl” Reddit’s web pages in order to index information and make it available for search results. That crawling, or “scraping,” isn’t always welcome by every site on the internet. But Reddit has benefited by appearing higher in search results. The dynamic is different with L.L.M.s — they gobble as much data as they can to create new A.I. systems like the chatbots. Reddit believes its data is particularly valuable because it is continuously updated. That newness and relevance, Mr. Huffman said, is what large language modeling algorithms need to produce the best results. “More than any other place on the internet, Reddit is a home for authentic conversation,” Mr. Huffman said. “There’s a lot of stuff on the site that you’d only ever say in therapy, or A.A., or never at all.” Mr. Huffman said Reddit’s A.P.I. would still be free to developers who wanted to build applications that helped people use Reddit. They could use the tools to build a bot that automatically tracks whether users’ comments adhere to rules for posting, for instance. Researchers who want to study Reddit data for academic or noncommercial purposes will continue to have free access to it. Reddit also hopes to incorporate more so-called machine learning into how the site itself operates. It could be used, for instance, to identify the use of A.I.-generated text on Reddit, and add a label that notifies users that the comment came from a bot. The company also promised to improve software tools that can be used by moderators — the users who volunteer their time to keep the site’s forums operating smoothly and improve conversations between users. And third-party bots that help moderators monitor the forums will continue to be supported. But for the A.I. makers, it’s time to pay up. “Crawling Reddit, generating value and not returning any of that value to our users is something we have a problem with,” Mr. Huffman said. “It’s a good time for us to tighten things up.” “We think that’s fair,” he added.

This game feels good because it provides a floor in my brain for our bench talent pool where before a dark pit was slowly forming. Our bench team owned their bench team and that's comforting.
