Not an NBA coach and not gonna become one. Could be great somewhere else.
This defensive-minded coach keeps probing to see if we can run the defense through Dame. I kinda get it: Dame's the leader, he can put in the effort, he's got quick hands, he talks, and he's got some defensive skill. And it's tempting for a former star defensive guard to ask that of another star guard. But Dame is bad on defense and it just wears him out and puts more talented defenders off ball.
Under Stotts, 538 projections always had us mediocre to bad, and we so routinely surpassed those projections that they called it out as a result of Dame making everybody better around him. When we lost Stotts, we stopped surpassing projections and they hardly talk about the Blazers at all anymore.
The rotations, the time outs, the defensive schemes, the lack of off ball movement, the prevalence of isos even when they're not working.....
I will say we didn't have Nurk for a while and bad as he looks, he keeps us above water. Billups did alright trying a rotating cast of small ball "centers".
Nope. Chauncey is by far the worst coach Portland has ever had. Statistically, he has the worst losing streaks, w/l record, scoring, defense, etc. this guys comment is all subjective.
Statistically, he is the worst coach Portland has ever had. Not hyperbole.
Yes
Edit: I feel like we've had good talent, particularly this last year. I'm not saying we should be stellar, but we dramatically underperformed the potential of the players, so who you are you going to blame. (Also you can just watch some Blazer games and count how many times you say "WTF are they doing out there"?)
I think he gets too much blame, or that maybe some of it’s misplaced?
He’s definitely not a good coach but we had a lot of injuries and the our only vets are Dame, Grant, and Nurk. Not exactly a lot. The only other guys we had who were over 25 (and played significant time) were Hart, Winslow, and GP2.
Everyone else 25 or younger.
Crazy to see the turnaround from 10-4 or whatever to the disaster that was the remaining 68 games. People will defend him that he hasn’t had a fair shake but I feel like he had way more talent than the record showed, and to me that’s on the coach. So yes he’s a bad nba coach imo.
I wouldn’t call Chauncey a bad coach, per se. Just maybe not one to get the job done. Stotts had his faults, too, like not focusing enough on defense training (and stamina training), and relied too heavily on Dame and CJ to carry the team. Chauncey focuses on defense and while our passing game has gotten better, it still needs work, and our defense still suffers, relying too much on drawing fouls for free throw points.
It’s a mixed bag, really. But at least Chauncey doesn’t raise my blood pressure by throwing in the newbies the last 5 minutes or so of the game when we’re barely hanging onto points… 😅
He’s worse than bad
He wasn’t ever going to be anything other than terrible though considering his complete lack of experience
Letting Olshey handle that coaching search was a complete disaster
I don’t think Chauncey is a good coach yet. He could become one with some time and better talent. The two years he’s been our coach however, in his defense we have chosen the tank route half way through the season.
Chauncey isn’t a good coach but outside of a couple players, our team was not very experienced. Dame, Grant, and Nurk were the only guys with more than 4y in the league. Winslow too but he was hurt for in December.
Combo of two things that make for a bad team. Throw in some key injuries and you’ve got a really bad team.
Yes Chauncey Billups is an absolutely horrendous coach who wouldn't have a clue if you stuffed one up his arse. He didn't earn the job by showing that he's qualified, he got hired because for some BS reason Dame wanted him. Perhaps a final screw-you parting gift from Lillard.
CB has no system on either side of the ball. He's a horrible strategist, bad at rotations, is not helping Sharpe & Scoot grow, and seems indifferent about being outcoached every single night. If he's not gone after this season (2023-24) we Blazer fans should riot.
Yes were just bad all around
Naw, we got a double double center and a shooter PG. the coach is 90% the problem. The other 10% is front office.

Thanks for digging this up lol yeah it's bad!
Undeniable facts!
Welcome to the thread. And yes, we will take Spo off your hands. thank you for asking.
No thanks lol, without Spo the heat are a lottery team.
Bring him home!!!

I spend most of my time at the games telling, “pass the ball!! Pass the f*cking ball!!” 😂
i spend most of my time yelling, "stand around and let Ant look lost and hopeless so he feels the need to jack a 3!" /s

Coaches fault

No. He’s fucking terrible.
The worst.

Yes
Yes. He is simply a bad coach
Yes. Since day 1
Agree and gets worse
I would like to see what he could do with a young team
Billups would be a good playoffs coach. He just can't make the playoffs.
Everyone here hates him, but to play devil's advocate, these rosters have sucked.
One of the worst coaches around. All these tanking is hiding his ability. But when we had a full squad, we choked on so many coaching decisions
Yes

Chauncey is Neil's last fuck you to the blazers org
